Hey, awesome comeback win for the water mammals! A night after Jesse Biddle, who was rumored to be a Brewers favorite pre-draft, no-hit them for 7 innings, the 'Tees scratched out an ugly win.

 

Taylor Jungmann was steady as ever, going 6 innings allowing 7 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 1 HR while recording a K and an 8:3 GO:FO ratio. Clearwater scored in the 1st and 6th against Taylor. Alan Williams gave up a bomb along with 3 more hits in 2 pretty unsuccessful innings but he got a W. Casey Medlen saved his 19th game in impressive fashion.

 

At the plate, Cody Hawn smacked 2 2B's including a big one in the 8th inning. Cody also walked twice putting him on base four times. Jason Rogers was on four times himself with 2 H, a BB and a reached on an error. The winning run came off the bat of Shea Vucinich as he scorched a 2-out run scoring 9th inning 2B.

 

Nick Shaw committed his 20th error while Franklin Romero Jr. chucked out another baserunner. FRJ's best tool is his arm.

Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener In Omaha, 5-3

Loss Eliminates Nashville From Playoff Contention

 

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers beat the Nashville Sounds, 5-3, behind seven strong innings from starter Ryner Verdugo on Saturday night at Werner Park in the opener of a four-game series.

 

The loss eliminated the Sounds from the playoff contention and gave the Storm Chasers their second consecutive PCL American Conference Northern Division title.

 

Designated hitter Jordan Brown, shortstop Jeff Bianchi, outfielder Caleb Gindl, and catcher Humberto Quintero all had two hits. Outfielder Khris Davis (0-for-4) snapped an eight-game hitting streak, but drove in a run for the 20th time in 27 games. Outfielder Logan Shafer also went hitless to snap his seven-game hitting streak.

 

Verdugo (11-3) allowed one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven for the victory. Omaha third baseman Anthony Seratelli led the Storm Chasers offense, by going 4-for-4 with a run scored.

 

The Sounds have all lost five contests at Werner Park this season and dropped 21 of their last 31 contests against Omaha, dating back to 2010.

 

Omaha scored its first two runs in the fourth inning, beginning with a leadoff double from Clint Robinson. With runners on first and third, Adam Moore hit an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice by Rey Navarro. Derrick Robinson then hit an RBI groundout to third.

 

Nashville got a run back in the next frame. Bianchi and Gindl had one-out singles before Quintero smacked an RBI double to right field.

 

The Storm Chasers tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh for a 5-1 advantage, highlighted by four straight singles to open the inning and a costly error by first baseman Sean Halton.

 

The Sounds scored their final two runs in the eighth to trail by a score 5-3, stranding the tying run at the plate. Schafer began by working an inning-opening walk to remove Verdugo from the game and promptly moved to third on a double from second baseman Eric Farris. Davis was responsible for the first run with an RBI groundout before Brown hammered an RBI single to center.

 

Nashville starter Tyler Thornburg (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits in four innings in the loss. The 23-year-old tossed 79 pitches (49 strikes) on the night, and was a victim of a 34-pitch opening frame.

 

Reliever Amaury Rivas pitched two scoreless frames. Tim Dillard was charged with three runs (two earned) without recording an out. Juan Perez closed it out with two shutout innings.

 

The Sounds and Storm Chasers continue their series at 2:05 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park. Right-hander Hiram Burgos (0-1, 4.24) takes the mound for Nashville against Omaha right-hander Jake Odorizzi (7-4, 2.92).

Well it would appear that Thornburg is on an 80-85 pitch limit for the rest of the season, if that's what it takes to keep him healthy it's all good.

Chiefs cool Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Jorge Soler had four hits and the Peoria Chiefs right fielder led the way to a 9-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Soler homered, doubled, singled twice, stole a base, and drove in two runs. The Chiefs collected 14 hits and Peoria starting pitcher Michael Jensen reached double digits in wins. Rattlers starter David Goforth struck out seven, but took the loss.

 

Peoria (55-69 overall, 20-34 second half) grabbed the early lead as Tim Saunders drove in a run with a single in the top of the first inning.

 

Wisconsin (71-52, 27-27) answered in the bottom of the second inning. Yadiel Rivera singled to knock Greg Hopkins in to tie the game.

 

The Rattlers took the lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning. Rivera reached on an error with one out and stole second. A walk and an error loaded the bases. Chadwin Stang's run scoring fielder's choice scored Rivera and the Rattlers were up 2-1.

 

The Chiefs came back in the top of the fifth inning. They loaded the bases on three singles. Saunders lifted a fly ball to medium right field. Stang made the catch and a strong throw to the plate, but Peoria catcher Yaniel Cabezas just beat the throw to score the tying run. Peoria would score another run in the inning as pitcher David Goforth's pickoff throw to first with runners on first and third was wild to allow Oliver Zapata to score the go ahead run from third.

 

Soler launched a home run to the Peoria bullpen in left-center to start the sixth inning and put the Chiefs in front 4-2.

 

Goforth left after six innings. He allowed four runs - three earned - on nine hits. Goforth also set a professional single game high for strikeouts with seven.

 

Jensen went five innings, but allowed two runs - one earned. Jensen struck out seven, too. He was in line to pick up his tenth win of the season after he left the game. The Peoria batters removed all doubt in the seventh inning.

 

The Chiefs had runners on first and second with two outs and the crowd was ready for the seventh inning stretch. Then, Soler lined a double down the third base line for an RBI against reliever Maverick Lasker. Jacob Rogers followed with a two run single and the Chiefs went up 7-2. Bijan Rademacher kept the inning going with a single. Then, Cabezas doubled in a run. Lasker hit Zapata to load the bases and Zeke DeVoss drew his second walk of the inning to force in a run to put the Chiefs up 9-2.

 

The Rattlers had only one hit over their final three at bats and didn't threaten to score.

 

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Chad Thompson (4-2, 5.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Yao-Lin Wang (3-3, 2.98) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

Sunday is the final Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan of the 2012 season. Timber Rattlers players will wear their Brewer-themed jerseys for the last time and there will be a live auction after the game. Fans will be able to bid on their favorite jerseys and take them home. Proceeds from the auction will go to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

 

Also on Sunday, Time Warner Cable customers can receive up to four half-price reserved bleacher tickets when they show their TWC bill at the ticket window at time of ticket purchase. Fans are invited to play catch on the field before the game courtesy of American Eagle. An autograph session featuring the players will take place during the auction.

Bad night for Rattlers pitching. David Goforth gave up four runs, three earned on nine hits over six innings. He did strike out seven batters. Maverick Lasker got shelled in an inning of work. He walked three, hit a batter and gave up four hits, leading to five earned runs. On the bright side, Michael White had his first scoreless outing as a Rattler. He did walk three batters in two innings of work, but allowed just one hit.

 

Not much to speak of offensively, outside of a 2-4 night from Greg Hopkins. He doubled and scored a run. Ben McMahan was 1-4 with a triple. Yadiel Rivera and Adrian Williams had the other two Wisconsin hits. Rafael Neda walked twice. Chadwin Stang and Rivera each stole a base. Jorge Soler was as advertised for Peoria, going 4-5 with a home run.

A nice come from behind walk-off win for the Stars as I take over just for tonight as TLB is entertaining our Italian friend Kalle8 at the Brewer game today. The Stars scored in the 6th, 7th, and 8th to push the game to extras and obviously walked of in the 10th.

 

Jimmy Nelson got beat around early giving up crooked numbers in the 2nd and 3rd, though 2 of the runs in the 2nd were unearned. In total Jimmy went 5.2 allowing 5 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits, 6 walks, 1 wild pitch, and 1 HBP while striking out 5. Brian Garman came on in relief of Nelson and retired the only batter he faced to end the 6th.

 

Jimmy Hellweg pitched the next 2 innings allowing a hit and 2 walks, but didn't allow a run. R.J. Seidel pitched the final 2 innings to earn the win.

 

On the offensive side of the coin big Brock Kjeldgaard (4-5) was a stud collecting 3 RBI (I know, I know) and moved the winning run into scoring position in the 10th. Kentrail Davis (2-5,HR) got the game winning knock in the 10th. Andy Gonzalez (2-2,HR,3BB) made up for his error by being on base all 5 times he stepped up to the plate.

The offense was the story tonight as none of the pitchers were very good.

 

Five Brewers had 2 hits; Ruben Ozuna (2-4 BB), Chris McFarland (2-5 2B), Alfredo Rodriguez (2-4 2B BB), Joe Andrade (2-5) and Paul Eshleman (2-4 HR). Everyone else had 1 hit with Michael Turay (1-4 2B BB) being the best of the bunch.

 

Taylor Wall was good enough with 5 IP 7 H 4 R 3 ER 1 BB 0 K. Martin Viramontes was out of control and only struck out 2 while getting 11 outs. Connor Whalen got the rare 1-out save with the team up by 5 when he entered. Connor allowed 1 run to score before finishing off the win.

This one looked like it was going to be a slugfest, but the finish was rather dampened by some decent pitching. Joel Dicent started and gave up all 4 runs the Papas scored. Anthony Banda had a very good outing considering his season to date. He recorded 8 outs giving up just 1 H and 2 BB in the process. The tall, thin lefty from Texas deserves plenty of time to develop in the system. Everyone loves the guys that hit the ground running, but late bloomers are just as important. Austin Blaski pitched a clean 9th for his 1st save.

 

With the thundersticks, statistical anomaly, Taylor Smith-Brennan (3-3 3B), had a fantastic game. Renaldo Jenkins had 2 H but he also get picked off. The whole team cooled off considerably after the 4-run 1st.

 

In the field, there were peaks and valleys, Clint Coulter style.

Brevard rallies to snap four-game skid

'Tees overcome a 5-1 deficit to edge Clearwater, 6-5

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees ended their four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion as they scored four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to top the Clearwater Threshers, 6-5 on Saturday night at Bright House Field.

 

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, a two-out RBI single by Peter Lavin gave the Threshers a 2-1 lead. Clearwater would then go on and score three in the seventh, on a two-out three-run homer by Edgar Duran, off of reliever Alan Williams who entered the game for Taylor Jungmann.

 

Now down 5-1, the 'Tees (29-26 second half, 58-65 overall) started their rally in the top of the eighth with Reggie Keen leading off the inning with a double. Nick Shaw then reached on a throwing error by catcher Cameron Rupp, which allowed Keen to score and make it a 5-2 game. Brevard would have another runner reach on an error as Jason Rogers reached first on a throwing error by the rehabbing Placido Polanco, to put runners on first and second with no outs.

 

After a Mike Walker strikeout, Shea Vucinich walked to load the bases. Cody Hawn would then clear the bases with a three-run double to center to tie the game at 5-5. Clearwater (28-26, 64-56) reliever Colton Murray was then lifted for Juan Sosa. Sosa pitched around a two-out walk to Parker Berberet to get out of the inning, but the damage had already been done by Brevard.

 

Williams would pitch around a lead-off walk in the eighth to retire the side as the 'Tees came up in the ninth with a chance to take the lead. Just like he did in the eighth, Keen led off the ninth by reaching base via a walk. Shaw then sacrificed Keen over on a bunt and then Rogers singled to put runners on the corners with one out.

 

Following a Walker strikeout, it was Vucinich's turn to be the hero as he doubled on a liner to right to plate Keen and give the Manatees a 6-5 lead. Hawn was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the force at any base, but Berberet then struck out to end the inning.

 

Casey Medlen entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to become Brevard County's single-season saves leader. After Harold Martinez reached on a throwing error by Shaw, Medlen was able to retire the Threshers in order to close out the win for the 'Tees and earn his record-breaking 19th save of the season. Medlen breaks the mark of 18 saves, set by Rob Wooten back in 2009.

 

Jungmann (10-6, 3.59) did not factor into the decision as he made his fourth consecutive quality start. The 2011 first round pick went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out one.

 

Of the eight hits that Brevard County recorded on Saturday night, five of them were doubles including two by Hawn, who also walked twice. Rogers and Berberet each recorded two hits as well.

 

The Manatees kept pace in the seemingly always jumbled North Division race. Brevard leapfrogged over Clearwater to move into fourth place and 2.5 games back of first place Tampa. Dunedin is currently 1.5 games behind the Yankees and Lakeland is two games out of first.

 

The rubber game of Brevard County and Clearwater's three-game set will be on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM (12:00 Central).

 

Brandon Williamson (3-9, 5.74) will get the ball for the 'Tees and has thrived in his last two starts as he is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in those games.

 

The Threshers will counter with Austin Wright (10-4, 3.09). Wright is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last three starts and has not lost a decision since July 6.

Stars Walk-off in Series Finale

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Kentrail Davis hit a single to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Andy Gonzalez and give the Stars the 6-5 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

The Biscuits got to Stars starter Jimmy Nelson early in the game. A lead-off double by second baseman Derek Dietrich followed by an error on Gonzalez with first baseman Michael Sheridan at bat put runners in scoring position with no outs. Dietrich and Sheridan scored on back-to-back hits by Brett Nommensen and Mark Thomas. A passed ball on catcher Anderson De La Rosa plated a third run of the inning, giving the Biscuits a 3-0 lead.

 

Montgomery added two more runs in the third thanks to a deep single to right center off the bat of Thomas. Nelson regained his control and allowed just one more Biscuits hit in his 5.2 innings of work. He left the game after giving up all five runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked six and struck out five in the no-decision.

 

The Stars finally got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a single from Brock Kjeldgaard to score Gonzalez. Gonzalez hit a solo shot in the sixth to cut Montgomery’s lead to three. Davis hit a bomb of his own in the next inning, his fifth long ball of the season, to put the Stars within two runs.

 

In the eighth inning, the Biscuits pitching staff unraveled. Reliever Kirby Yates replaced C.J. Riefenhauser and walked the bases loaded with just one out. Kjeldgaard hit another deep single to bring two runners home and tie the game. He went 4-for-5 on the night with three RBIs.

 

With the game still tied in the bottom of the tenth, the Stars second extra-inning game in the last three games, Gonzalez drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on another Kjeldgaard single. In the next at-bat, Davis scored Gonzalez to give Huntsville their fourth walk-off and second consecutive win.

 

Reliever R.J. Seidel picked up the win for the Stars, improving to 2-2 on the season, after throwing two hitless innings, walking three and striking out three. Relievers Brian Garman and Johnny Hellweg combined for 2.1 shutout innings. Neil Schenk took the loss for Montgomery, going 0.1 innings, giving up one run on hits.

 

The Stars start a five-game road trip tomorrow to face the Mississippi Braves. RHP Johnnie Lowe will take the mound for the Stars. First pitch is at 5 p.m.

The Helena Brewers offense exploded in the sixth inning Saturday night, as Helena scored eight runs in the frame en route to a 10-6 win over Orem.

 

Paul Eshleman hammered his first professional home run, and the top of the order combined for six hits and three RBIs. Every Brewer had at least one hit in the contest.

 

Orem led 3-0 after four innings but Helena came to life in the fifth and sixth frames. All 10 runs were scored in those middle periods.

 

Taylor Wall picked up his third win on the mound, despite allowing four runs on seven hits through five innings, while walking one, striking out none and throwing three wild pitches. Connor Whalen earned his seventh save. Brewers pitchers issued six walks and had half as many strikeouts.

Many of you know the background story on Manatees' RHP Tommy Toledo, who, while at the University of Florida, suffered major injuries when a line drive smashed into his face. This Bob Brainerd story is one of several that provided details to us since Toledo was drafted by the Crew.

 

On Saturday, the Lowell Spinners (rookie Red Sox) played at Fenway park, and Toledo's University of Florida teammate LHP Brian Johnson, Boston's supplemental first round draft pick this year, suffered through a similar play (multiple fractures).
