The Scoop: Cole struck out a career-high nine batters against Portland on Thursday and took a no-hitter into the fifth before losing the bid on a Xander Bogaerts double. Last year's No. 1 overall pick has found a new gear with Altoona of late, loging a 1.23 ERA over his last four starts and 22 innings, during which time he's allowed 12 hits while brandishing a 26-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. While Cole may not challenge for the minor league lead in any one category, he will rank near the top of the Florida State and Eastern league prospect lists, while being little more than half a season away from Pittsburgh in 2013.

The Scoop: Almora spent his first three weeks in the Arizona League, where the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft came as advertised. Upon his promotion to the Northwest League, Almora homered in his first game with Boise on Wednesday. It's been an auspicious debut for Almora, who has hit .353/.367/.518 in 20 games between the two levels. If there is such thing as a stacked short-season lineup, it has to be Boise, where the Hawks now have Almora, first baseman Dan Vogelbach, third baseman Jeimer Candelario and second baseman Gioskar Amaya. The best of the group, though, is Almora, whose feel for hitting is beyond his years.

Team: Triple-A Nashville (Pacific Coast)

Age: 23

Why He's Here: 0-0, 1.29, 2 GS, 14 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 13 SO

The Scoop: A disappointing first half left the enigmatic Peralta with a 5.10 ERA, a walk rate of 5 per nine innings and an ugly 1.6 K-BB ratio at the all-star break. After some midseason mechanical fine-tuning, Peralta has a 3.98 ERA, 11 strikeouts per nine and a 2.7 K-BB ratio in seven second-half starts. With the second highest walk rate in the league (4.6 BB/9), Peralta still needs to improve his control, which scouts earlier in his career thought would make him a reliever. But if the 6-foot-2, 240-pound righthander can build on two good starts this week, then his low-to-mid 90s fastball; sharp, low-80s slider and changeup give him a chance to be an impact starter.

• Sean Buckley, 1b, Reds: Everything has been tougher for Buckley, 22, in his second pro season. Projected as an outfielder/third baseman out of junior college, he's now playing first base. At the plate, he's found the Midwest League to be much tougher than the Pioneer League. Buckley's strikeout rate is up, his power is down and he appears to have run out of gas in his first full season. Buckley is hitting .130/.216/.174 for low Class A Dayton in August with two extra-base hits.

Brian (Greensboro, NC): If you were to re-rank or redraft the pitchers from the 2011 draft, what would your top 5 pitcher list look like based on their performance to date?

 

 

Matthew Eddy: Gerrit Cole's numbers haven't been eye-popping, but I'd still give him the benefit of the doubt in the top spot just based on his physicality and the grades his raw stuff merits. Beyond Cole, I'd go Bundy 2, Bauer 3 and maybe round out the top 5 with Archie Bradley and Jose Fernandez. No 2011 draftee has made a louder debut than Reds lefty Tony Cingrani, a Rice senior drafted in the third round.

Corey (Cincy): There's been speculation on Billy Hamilton being called up to the Reds just to be a pinchrunner. Do you agree? Also, he is more than holding his own at AA with the bat so far, are you encouraged by his overall offensive game?

 

 

Matthew Eddy: I think Hamilton would add a valuable skill/dimension to the Reds' September/playoff roster, and I hope they do decide to call him up when Pensacola's season ends. Who wouldn't want a baserunner who could potentially score on a single (especially in 2-out situations)? As to his performance . . . I'm encouraged by his walk rate this season, but the strikeout rate (about 18 percent of PAs) is elevated for a player with so little power. Hamilton's also not impacting the ball at all as a lefty hitter — .314/.421/.421 which works out to an isolated power of .079 if you count his nine LH triples as doubles. That's akin to Luis Castillo with more SB impact and a lot more strikeouts.

Remy (Birmingham): My name is Javier Baez.....do you think I am a top 50 prospect in 2013 BA handbook?

 

 

Matthew Eddy: On most prospects I'd hedge, but not Baez. He's going to be a legit MLB hitter.

Norse (Pittsburgh): Could Cole be a Sept. callup in the pen, ala Price?

 

 

Matthew Eddy: That's not the worst idea in the world, the only drawback being that I don't think Cole's control is as refined right now as Price's was down the stretch in 2008. But it sure would be fun for prospect-watchers to get a sneak peek at Cole out of Pittsburgh bullpen this September.

Fantasia (Milwaukee): Can Jean Segura be a good starting shortstop for my BrewCrew? His defense seems very good and he looks like he has some decent pop in his bat- but can he team up with Rickie Weeks and be a productive defensive/offensive keystone combination? We gave up Grienke for him, and hope he can fill the shortstop position for years to come.

 

 

Matthew Eddy: You came to the right place for pie-in-the-sky Segura projections. I don't know that Segura ever will be a top-5 overall shortstop based on his defensive inconsistency, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him rank as one of the top *offensive* shortstops in the game. Segura's overall profile screams second baseman to me, and that's the position he played in the low minors with the Angels. In short, I'd expect high averages, 15 HR and 30 steals from peak Segura.

Chris (Missouri): Royals and Cardinals fans have to be happy. Wil Myers or Oscar Taveras for minor league player of the year?

 

Matthew Eddy: We've had our POY discussion internally, but my lips are sealed. Myers and Taveras definitely were two of the names discussed. That much should be evident. Who gets your vote?

John (Pittsburgh): I'm curious about another Pirate RHP Kyle McPherson. He missed a lot of time this year but has since been very good at AA/AAA with excellent K:BB numbers and reportedly a low 90's fastball. Is he a legit rotation candidate or am I missing something?

 

 

Matthew Eddy: Yes, McPherson is a legit rotation candidate — or maybe a reliever — but his fastball and change grade out as major league pitches, and his control allows his stuff to play up.

Everyone contributes in Rattlers win at Beloit

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-2 on Friday Night at Pohlman Field. Each Rattler in the lineup contributed in some way to help the Rattlers to win their second straight over their in-state rivals. There was solid pitching, a couple of really good defensive plays, timely hitting, and opportunistic base running in the win.

 

Wisconsin (68-55 overall, 29-24 second half) had three hits in the top of the first inning, but needed an error to score their run. Chadwin Stang was at second base and Ben McMahan was at first with one out. Nick Ramirez singled to center and Stang was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score on the hit.

 

Cameron Garfield's grounder to short turned into an error as the throw to get the inning ending force play at second went into right field. McMahan scored on the play for a 1-0 Wisconsin lead.

 

Run scoring doubles by Greg Hopkins and Mike Garza in the fourth inning put the Rattlers up 3-0.

 

Wisconsin pulled a double steal to get a run in the fifth. Chadwin Stang was at third and broke for the plate as the throw went through to second in an unsuccessful attempt to get Lance Roenicke on a stolen base attempt.

 

McMahan tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single for a 5-0 edge.

 

Rattlers starting pitcher Chad Pierce was in and out of trouble through his five innings of work. But, he stranded eight Beloit runners on base, including five in scoring position, and struck out four to put himself in position for his sixth win of the season.

 

Tyler Cravy took over for Pierce in the sixth inning and retired the first seven batters he faced. Then, Miguel Sano put Beloit (67-56, 28-25) on the scoreboard. The slugging third baseman for the Snappers lifted a 3-1 pitch from Cravy over the wall in center for his 25th home run of the season.

 

Cravy would allow another run on a two out RBI single by Nate Roberts in the ninth, but he nailed down the final out for his third save of the season.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a seven game homestand Saturday night with the first game of a four-game series against the Peoria Chiefs. David Goforth (8-7, 5.04) is scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Michael Jensen (9-5, 3.63) is set to be the starting pitcher for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:35pm.

The Rattlers got a strong pitching performance from Chad Pierce and Tyler Cravy. Pierce started and threw five scoreless innings to get his sixth win. Cravy pitched the final four innings and allowed just two runs to earn the save.

 

The Rattlers struck out 13 times but also managed five runs on 12 hits. Greg Hopkins had a 2-5 night with two doubles. Ben McMahan was 2-4 with a walk. Michael Garza went 2-4 with a double, and Adrian Williams was 2-4 as well. Every Timber Rattler except Max Walla had a hit. It was a rough night for Walla, going 0-5 wiht 3 strikeouts. Chadwin Stang and Lance Roenicke each stole a base.

Green, Baker Lead Sounds Past Rainiers, 7-2

Nashville Takes Three Of Four From Tacoma To Conclude Homestand

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Taylor Green went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and Brian Baker tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers in front of 7,411 fans on Friday evening at Greer Stadium.

 

Baker (3-4) continued his recent solid pitching, allowing two hits and fanning seven over his six scoreless frames to record his third victory of the year. The right-hander, who has worked 11.0 scoreless frames over his last two starts, has posted a 2.66 ERA (15er/50.2ip) in his last 10 PCL outings.

 

Five Sounds players produced multiple-hit efforts, led by Green's three-knock evening and the fourth straight two-hit night by center fielder Logan Schafer.

 

The victory gave the Sounds a 3-1 season series win against Tacoma. Nashville (59-68) finished 5-3 during its homestand.

 

The Sounds jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead against Andrew Carraway with five consecutive extra-base hits off the Rainiers right-hander.

 

Eric Farris got things started with a one-out double down the left field line and scored the night's first run when red-hot left fielder Khris Davis drilled an RBI double off the highest panel of the 24-foot tall batter's eye in center.

Jordan Brown followed with a run-scoring two-bagger down the right field line before Green and Jeff Bianchi mashed Nashville's fourth set of back-to-back homers on the year to up the lead to 5-0. Carraway (4-7) lasted just one inning for Tacoma, taking the loss after giving up five runs on five extra-base hits.

 

The Sounds were unable to add to the lead in the third after having the bases loaded with no outs against Tacoma reliever David Pauley. After Brown, Green, and Bianchi singled in succession to fill the bags, Pauley induced a fielder's choice grounder from Corey Patterson which erased Brown at the plate then got out of the jam when Dayton Buller grounded into a double play.

 

Green continued his solid night in the home half of the fifth, when he led off with a solo shot to right-center off Pauley to increase the Sounds' lead to 6-0. It marked the sixth two-homer game by a Nashville player in 2012 and the first by Green.

After Baker's departure, Rob Wooten added a scoreless frame of relief for the Sounds before Tacoma broke through for a pair of runs against Fautino De Los Santos in the eighth.

 

Nick Franklin put the visitors on the board with a two-out RBI double off the batter's eye that plated Brandon Bantz, who had singled earlier in the frame. Two batters later, Luis Jimenez made it a 6-2 game with a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield.

 

Patterson got one of those runs back for the Sounds in the bottom of the eighth when he greeted new Tacoma reliever Chance Ruffin with a first-pitch home run to right, the veteran's ninth big fly of the season.

The Sounds embark upon their final road trip of the season on Saturday, when they'll play the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series at division-leading Omaha (AAA-Royals). Right-hander Tyler Thornburg (1-0, 1.80) will make the start for Nashville and face Storm Chasers southpaw Ryan Verdugo (10-3, 3.51).

Brian Baker is also making a late season push for consideration in the disaster that's been Milwaukee's pen this year.

 

The sounds pounded out 13 hits and here are all the performances of note once again:

Logan Schafer (2-5), Eric Farris (1-4,2B), Khrush Davis (1-3,2B,BB), Jordan Brown (1-3,2B,BB), Taylor Green (3-4,2HR), Jeff Bianchi (2-3,HR,BB), and finally Corey Patterson (2-4,HR). If you were counting yes 1-7 hitters were all very productive at the plate in this game.

 

This PCL schedule is just weird with a series ending on a Friday, but the very talented Omaha squad is up next. We should see Jake Odorizzi who last pitched 7 scoreless innings on the 14th, I'll be interested to see how that turns out.

'Tees thumped 11-0 by Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees managed just one hit and four base runners total as they were thrashed 11-0 by the Clearwater Threshers on Friday night at Bright House Field for their fourth consecutive loss.

 

Nick Shaw broke up Clearwater's no-hitter with a one-out bloop single to center in the bottom of the ninth. Both Reggie Keen and Jason Rogers drew walks and Parker Berberet reached on an error to represent the only other Brevard County base runners on the night.

 

The Manatees (28-26 second half, 57-65 overall) struck out a season-high 16 times, including 12 times in seven innings against Threshers (28-25, 64-55) starter Jesse Biddle. Brevard County's previous season-high in strikeouts was 15, which occurred just this past Tuesday against Dunedin.

 

Clearwater jumped out to a 3-0 lead on 'Tees starter Matt Miller (1-1, 10.00) in the first inning, thanks to two-out RBI singles from Zach Collier and Carlos Alonso. The Threshers scored another run in the third on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game.

 

The game unraveled for Miller and the Manatees in the fourth, thanks to a two-out RBI single by the rehabbing Placido Polanco and then the crushing blow being a three-run homer to right by Peter Lavin to make it an 8-0 game.

 

Miller did not get past the fourth as he had his worst start of the season between both Class-A Wisconsin and Brevard. He allowed ten hits to go along with a season-high eight runs. He walked one and struck out six.

 

Eric Arnett relieved Miller and allowed two runs in two innings of work including a solo homer to Zach Collier to lead-off the fifth inning. Tommy Toledo pitched the final two innings for the 'Tees and allowed one run on two hits.

 

Despite their fourth straight loss, the 'Tees are still three games back of first place Tampa, but are in fifth place in the North Division.

 

The Manatees will look to 2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann (10-6, 3.61) to its losing streak on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Jungmann is 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA in three August starts.

 

Clearwater will counter with Seth Rosin (0-1, 4.50) who is making his second start with the Threshers. Rosin came over to the Phillies organization as part of the Hunter Pence trade with the San Francisco Giants back on July 31.

The Stars didn't disappoint in the exciting finish department, and came up with a big two-run rally to take the lead for good in the 8th. They jumped out to a huge lead thanks to a six-run 1st, but the Biscuits fought back with two in the 4th, and a six-run inning of their own in the 5th to take an 8-6 lead. The Stars got a run back in the 6th to pull within one run & set the stage for the 8th inning dramatics -- definitely check the PbP section below, it's worth it. I really want to let the game log speak for this one & provide context for the important innings.

 

Starter Evan Anundsen struggled in pretty much every inning tonight, but was able to keep Montgomery off the scoreboard until the 4th. Dan Meadows came on in relief of Anundsen after three batters in the 5th, before an out had been recorded, and yielded 1B-1B-WP-1B before getting lifted for Josh Butler. Butler got the three outs to escape the inning, but also allowed a single & had to work around an error behind him... a 5-4-3 double play stopped the bleeding. He then worked a scoreless 6th. Kyle Heckathorn stepped up with two huge perfect innings, and kept the Stars in this game. Darren Byrd was able to bounce back & slam the door on Montgomerey while keeping them off the scoreboard, after allowing BB-1B to start the 9th.

 

-Scooter Gennett extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single to lead off the 2nd.

This was a Brewers game and it was not a pretty game, but I repeat myself.

 

Santo Manzanillo made a rehab appearance. Every out he made came via a strikeout. I really wish he would have made more than two outs.

 

Danny Keller, an overslot signing out of HS in California, has been really struggling as a professional. At 6'5" and 190 lbs, he is physically imposing, but his repertoire, in its current form, is simply not. Hitters are batting close to .400 against him this season. The worst part, he has pitched worse this year then last. Gross.

 

2012 3rd rounder Zach Quintana was the only decent pitcher on the night between all three of the teams I cover. He managed 8 outs while giving up 3 H 0 R 0 BB and recording 4 K and a 2:1 GO:FO ratio. With a nice 3 pitch mix, Quintana has had some decent success in Maryvale. This is a kid born in 1994. Amazing.

 

Alan Sharkey went 3-4 and Dionis Hinojosa went 2-4 with a 2B and SB. Clint Coulter took one BB but he also struck out three times. Jalen Harris also K'ed three times. Malcom Dowell was thrown a bone by being placed in the leadoff spot, but he could only muster a single hit in 5 AB's.

 

Harris, Jose Garcia and Dustin Houle have far too many errors considering the number of chances they have had.
