2013 Draft prospects discussion

Community Moderator

Okay, this technically isn't regarding this year's draft, but I am looking forward to watching former 21st overall pick (2011 Draft - Blue Jays) Tyler Beede pitch for Vanderbilt tonight in the NCAA Regional (on ESPN U) at 7:30pm versus Illinois. The kid is 14-0 with a 2.10 ERA on the season and by most accounts has enough upside to be a top 5 pick in next June's MLB Draft.

Based on the Brewers start I wouldn't rule him out as a guy that may be realistically on their draft board in 2014.

I find myself wishing the Brewers would be bad enough for a top 5 pick but there's just too much talent on the MLB roster not to make a run and end up within a handful of games of .500 either way. All it would take is Gallardo and Peralta to step up they will start winning games. I still think the Brewers could have winning season if the young pitching ascends. I don't think the situation is nearly as bleak as it appeared through most of May.

I would love a relatively "easy" impact pitching solution though. I just think a trade is still our best bet.

I completely agree Crew, I didn't mean to insinuate I thought that it was likely (which in hindsight makes using the term "realistically" a poor choice on my part). I expect May was an aberration and the team is likely to end up finishing closer to 80 wins than 60, but I do find myself rooting for one of two scenarios at this point:

1) a 90 win team

OR

2) a team that becomes sellers and acquires an infusion of young talent via trades and finishes with a poor enough record to have a top 10 draft pick

I enjoy winning, but unfortunately being a 78 win team in MLB is not a very rewarding place to finish.

So Phil Bickford is one of the top HS arms in this year's draft and is lauded for his excellent fastball. He's also projected to be selected from picks 15-20. If the Brewers hadn't signed Lohse as a desperation move they could've gotten a high-ceilinged arm for once.

Clearly Lohse has been the main difference maker this season. Stop being overly critical of Mark A. & be grateful for what he's given Brewers fans!

narwhalattack, what's up with the "for once" comment? As much as I despised the Arnett and Heckathorn picks, they were consensus first round talents with high 90s heat. Throw in that Jungmann threw 93-95 in college with a big curve and dominated a strong conference, and many thought Bradley was even better. Then Rogers still throws 97-99 (at least as of Sept, not as of this spring). We have drafted lots of high ceiling arms, also including Hall, Lopez, etc etc.

You may think Jungmann's curve was "big" but it wasn't good in college and apparently isn't all that good now.

Hall's velocity has never improved, he's no more high ceiling than Anundsen was.

I didn't know much about Bradley on draft day but clearly he's not a high ceiling arm if he's going to work in the upper 80s and low 90s as a professional.

Inman and Scarpetta were mostly tapped out on draft day, they didn't have much if any projection left... etc, etc, etc.

I already ran down the list of pitchers who were drafted that truly had the potential to be top of the rotation types in the pitching thread on the MLB forum. I'm not going to repeat that effort here.

I thought Scarpetta was a 1st/2nd round talent that dropped only because he was coming off a torn finger ligament (which he subsequently re-torn)

Anyone think the Brewers may throw pick 54 or 72 at Covey again? Everything sounded amicable last time, and I'm sure they know the other VERY well at this point in time

oops, I meant to write 72 or 90, not 54. But yeah, I could see it. I would like to see a focus on hitters early, with pitchers scattered in rounds 4-10. Also the system could use some lefty bats. Don't want to draft for need, but when all things are equal, let's go with it.

I wonder if Travis Demeritte will fall to the Brewers at the 54th pick. Another HS SS who is probably more of a 3B than he is a SS but he can hit for power and has an absolute cannon for an arm. I believe he was clocked in the low 90's throwing from the mound. He definitely has the arm to play either 3B,SS, or a corner OF spot I believe he is athletic enough to be a SS I just don't think he will translate all that well as a SS once he fills out. He could be another Tulowitzki but I doubt he will ever become as good as him but 3B is definitely not out of the question. I have fallen in love with him and Puk but I think Puk has shot up enough charts where he will be taken before the Brewers pick.

Any ideas on who the Brewers might be hoping for with the 54th pick?

Also, I wonder if the Cubs take Mark Appel out of Stanford?

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but does anyone have info on the top Wisconsin prospects for the draft, and what round they're likely to be picked?

The Helena bullpen should have crazy depth.

One would think. I am going to be interested to see who they give shots at starting too. Josh Uhen, Andrew Ghelfi, and Charlie Markson all sound like they'll be out in Montana by next weekend.
