Link Report for Wed. 8/15 -- Gagnon foiled again in search for 1st FSL win; Marcum rehab #2

Mass Haas

Grand Junction (Rockies) 5 Helena 4

Box Score

Helena sandwiched 7 scoreless innings with two 2-run innings as they came up 1 run short. By the way, does any team tinker with their lineup more than the Helena Brewers? Tonight, Yonki Hernandez (2-4 2B 3B BB) led off and he was perfect for the role. Chris McFarland (1-4 BB) was on twice and Alfredo Rodriguez (2-3 2B BB) thrice. Adam Giacalone (1-3 2B) had a SAC fly. 8-hitter Ruben Ozuna went 1-3 with a BB and a SB.

On the hill, Leonard Lorenzo started well but finished not well. He K'ed 6 and BB'ed 1 in 5 IP but now I have run out of nice things to say. Connor Whalen has been a rock in the pen for Helena and he threw 2 more scoreless innings tonight. Joel Pierce threw a very boring final inning.

Check out 2012 10th overall pick David Dahl's line. High picks are exciting.

Montgomery 9, @Huntsville 6

Huntsville Box

Going to keep this brief tonight.

Ariel Pena was awful tonight. He gave up a grand slam as part of a 6-run 1st, and had obvious command problems. He was lifted with two outs in the 2nd, after giving up another run. He finished with a line of: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HBP, 2:1 GO:AO.

After a Domnit Bolivar solo HR in the 3rd made the score 7-1, the Stars pulled to within two runs with a 4-run 4th. Brock Kjeldgaard did the big damage, with a 3-run shot to center. Unfortunately, Huntsville was held scoreless until the 9th, when they managed a single run. Kjeldgaard made the final out with two men on base, but obviously I don't mean to dump on the guy... just to provide context.

R.J. Seidel was a key performer in relief of Pena, getting the final out of the 2nd & then posting three straight shutout innings.

It appears that Dan Meadows was ejected after the end of the top of the 8th, but thanks to MiLB's cryptic game logs, we may never know the true story... ;) Meadows allowed the Biscuits' two single tack-on runs in the 6th & 8th innings; the run in the 8th was unearned.

Philippe Valiquette worked a perfect 9th inning thanks to two groundball outs and a called strike three to end the frame.

Josh Prince: 1-4, BB, PO, OF assist

Hainley Statia: 1-5

Scooter Gennett: 2-5, E (fielding) -- another multi-hit game extends his hitting streak to 10 games

Andy Gonzalez: 2-3, RBI, 2 BB

Hunter Morris: 3-5, RBI -- good to see Morris bounce back with a good game, he'd gone 1-20 in his last five games

Kjeldgaard: 1-5, HR, 3 RBI, OF assist

Kentrail Davis: 0-4

Bolivar: 1-3, HR, RBI, BB

Adam Weisenburger: 0-4

Final: Wisconsin 10, Beloit 13

Snappers outslug Wisconsin

Teams combine for seven homers in Beloit's 13-10 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Beloit Snappers combined to hit seven home runs and bang out 25 hits Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. The Snappers outlasted the Rattlers 13-10 in a back-and-forth game that was finally decided when Beloit scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Beloit (67-54 overall, 28-23 second half) scored an unearned run off Shaun Marcum in the bottom of the second inning. A dropped popup allowed Miguel Sano to reach second base. A fly ball out to deep left-center moved Sano to third. He scored on a two out single by Stephen Wickens.

Wisconsin (69-51, 25-26) used the long ball to take the lead in the top of the third inning. Chadwin Stang launched a two-run homer off Beloit starting pitcher Cole Johnson to put the Rattlers in front 2-1. Johnson would walk Brandon Macias with two outs and be replaced by Tim Atherton. Ben McMahan welcomed Atherton to the game by lining a two-run homer to left for a 4-1 lead.

Beloit would score twice in the fourth inning to pull to within a run. Eddie Rosario doubled and would score on a single by Kennys Vargas. Vargas would try to stretch the platy into a double and would be thrown out for the second out. Marcum gave up a single and two walks to load the bases before he left due to his pitch count.

Jacob Barnes relieved Marcum and walked in a run before getting the final out of the fourth. That walk allowed the Snappers to get to within 4-3.

Marcum pitched 3-2/3 innings, allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Snappers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Barnes retired the first two batters he faced in the inning, but allowed a walk, a single, and a walk to load the bases. A walk to Wickens forced in the tying run.

Wisconsin responded in the top of the sixth with three runs. Rafael Neda smacked an RBI single to right and Greg Hopkins raced home from second base to take the lead. Stang followed with a two-run double to make it 7-4.

But, Beloit kept coming back.

JD Williams hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into Wisconsin's lead to make it 7-6.

Barnes gave up a hit and a walk in the seventh inning and left with two outs and runners at the corners. Michael Strong got the fly ball to left off the bat off the bat of Nate Roberts he needed to end the inning. But, the ball was dropped and two runs scored to put the Snappers up 8-7.

Then, the Rattlers came back. Neda singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Adrian Williams. The pinch-runner didn't need to run. Yadiel Rivera drove a 2-0 pitch from Beloit closer Corey Williams over the fence in right-center for a two-run home run and a 9-8 Wisconsin lead.

Beloit wasn't done. Eddie Rosario homered on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the frame and tie the game 9-9. A single, a strikeout, and a walk, put runners at first and second with one out. Wickens singled to shallow right and the runner at third was going to hold, but the ball was bobbled in right and the go ahead run scored. Matt Koch drilled a three-run homer make it 13-9 in favor of Beloit.

Nick Ramirez drilled a solo homer - the fourth Wisconsin homer of the night - with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. The home run was the fifteenth of the season for the Snappers. But, that was as close as the Rattlers would get.

Game two of the series is Thursday night at Pohlman Field. Mark Williams (6-9, 3.88) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jason Wheeler (13-5, 3.28) is the scheduled starter for the Snappers. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Late Homer Sinks Sounds, 7-6

Sounds Blow Eighth Save In The Month Of August

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tacoma Rainiers homered three times en route to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Nashville Sounds in the second game of a three-game series on Wednesday night at Greer Stadium.

The Sounds trailed by five runs early, but came back to take a one-run lead before relinquishing the lead in the eighth. Nashville's last nine games have been decided by one or two runs.

Nashville out-hit Tacoma on the night, but all 11 hits were singles. Outfielder Logan Schafer (2-for-5) posted his second straight multi-hit game. Second baseman Eric Farris, third baseman Taylor Green, and designated hitter Sean Halton each added two hits.

Carlos Triunfel lifted his 10th homer of the season over the left field all to give the Rainiers a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Tacoma broke it open in the next inning to take a 5-0 lead, beginning with consecutive doubles from Luis Antonio and Carlos Peguero. After Triunfel's second hit brought home another run with two outs, Guillermo Quiroz blasted a two-run homer just below the guitar-shaped scoreboard.

Nashville came back to cut the lead to 5-4 in the next inning, beginning with base hits from second baseman Eric Farris and Khris Davis. First baseman Jordan Brown brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly. After third baseman Taylor Green singled, designated hitter Sean Halton followed with an RBI base hit. Outfielder Caleb Gindl and catcher Humberto Quintero brought home the final two runs of the inning.

The Sounds took advantage of another Tacoma error in the next inning and went ahead at 6-5. Outfielder Logan Schafer led off with a bunt single, moved to third on a Farris base hit, and scored the tying run on a Davis sacrifice fly. Farris, who advanced to second on the sac fly, moved to third on an infield groundout, and scored the go-ahead run on a pickoff attempt and throwing error from Tacoma catcher Quiroz.

Reliever Juan Perez recorded his second straight blown save and the Sounds' eighth in the month of August as the Rainiers scored two in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead. Alex Liddi led off with a base hit and scored on Peguero's team-leading 20th blast over the center field wall.

Nashville starting pitcher Claudio Vargas scattered seven hits for five runs in six innings. In 105 pitches (55 for strikes), Vargas walked a season-high four batters while his five runs matched a season high set on June 19 vs. Oklahoma City. Five of his seven hits went for extra bases (three doubles and two homers).

Reliever Amaury Rivas pitched a perfect a seventh frame before Perez (4-1) gave up a couple of runs in 1/3 of an inning for his first loss. Donovan Hand ended the game with 1 2/3 scoreless frames.

Tacoma starter Erasmo Ramirez gave up six runs on eight hits and a walk in five innings. Brian Sweeney (6-3) allowed two hits over two scoreless frames for the victory. Danny Farquhar worked around a one-out walk for his second walk of the year.

The Sounds and Rainiers continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Thursday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Wily Peralta (6-10, 4.95) toes the rubber for Nashville against Tacoma right-hander D.J. Mitchell (0-2, 3.63).

Final: DSL Brewers 3, DSL Angels 1 (12 Innings)

DSL Brewers Box Score

Well the youngest team in the organization salvaged an otherwise woeful day with the only victory at any level. In a somewhat odd twist Jorge Lopez has been the middle pitcher in all of his games thus far and put up another very solid effort going 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Joan De La Cruz actually pitched the first 2 inning allowing an unearned run. Victor Diaz and Felix Paulino pitched the final 5 scoreless innings to close out the contest. Brewer pitchers struck out 12 batters in total and only walked 3 in the 12 innings, just a fantastic effort all the way around.

Carlos Belonis (3-6), the team really missed him, and Jose Dicent (3-6) led the way for the young Brewers in this one. No other Brewers had multiple hits or an XBH, and through the 12 innings they only had 1 error, a throwing error by Raphachel Colasti.

Nashville Play By Play

The Brewers had legitimate shots to score the go ahead run(s) in the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th innings before finally busting through in the 12th.

DSL Brewers Top of the 12th

Brewers swept away in Grand Junction

Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers were swept away in Grand Junction, falling 5-4 Wednesday night to the Rockies after blowing an early lead.

The Rockies won all three games of the series at Suplizio Field to extend their win steak to four straight games. They are within a game of .500 in the second half, while the Brewers are tied for last place with Great Falls at 4-13 in the Pioneer League North Division. Helena has lost seven straight.

(NOTE: Helena now an ugly 17-38 overall).

The Brewers wasted no time taking the lead Wednesday. Their first three batters of the game reached with base hits, and the visitors wound up scoring two runs in the inning to grab a quick lead.

After not having a base runner in the first three innings of the game, the Rockies bats finally got to work in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Wessinger started the inning with a bunt single. He stole second, then stole third and scored after catcher Paul Eshelman threw the ball away to get the Rockies on the board. After that, Jeff Popick singled to keep the inning alive. He got to third when Jeremy McLeod singled and scored on a Ben Waldrip double to tie the game at 2.

In the fifth, Grand Junction took the lead. Max White hit his third home run of the season to make it a 3-2 game, his second homer in as many games. Then with two out, Matt Wessinger walked, and he scored when Dahl doubled to left center field to make it a 4-2 game. Dahl scored after a two-base error on Eshleman to make it 5-2.

Helena scored a pair of runs in the ninth, and the Brewers had the tying run on third base – a common trend this season. But Scott Oberg got Chris McFarland to pop out to end the game, securing his 10th save of the season.

Johendi Jiminian started on the mound for the Rockies, and after a rough first inning, he didn’t allow a run the rest of the night. In five innings he walked two and struck out five, picking up his first win of the season. Leonard Lorenzo was tagged with the loss for Helena.

The Brewers travel to Orem, Utah today to begin a four-game set against the Owlz. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Helena Brewers catcher Paul Eshleman tags Jeremy McLeod of the Grand Junction Rockies at the plate for the final out in the bottom of the fourth inning of Wednesday's game at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction.
