Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Also a blurb about Khris Davis needing to improve his defense... but the Gord Ash interview got me thinking, has Nichols been interviewed at all this season by anyone about any players? I remember him discussing the BC player dev extension but that's about it?

@Dunedin 4, Brevard County 3

Manatees fall late to Dunedin

Brevard strikes out a season-high 15 times in 4-3 loss

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had their three-game winning streak snapped as they dropped the first game of a three-game series to the Dunedin Blue Jays, 4-3 on Tuesday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

The 'Tees (28-23 second half, 57-62 overall) had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Jays (26-23, 68-48) proceeded to score three runs in the inning and held on for the victory.

Dunedin scored the first run of the game in the first inning and it started with Kenny Wilson singling to center and then reaching second on an error by center fielder Reggie Keen. Two batters later, Wilson would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kevin Pillar.

Keen would atone for his error in the first as his two-out triple in the top of the third, plated Joey Paciorek and tied the game up. One batter later, Nick Shaw would give Brevard the lead as he drove in Keen with a RBI single.

The one unearned run in the first inning was all that the Blue Jays would get off of Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Williamson (3-9, 5.74). Williamson yielded five hits in six innings of work, did not walk a batter and fanned five. After struggling most of the season, Williamson has pitched his best ball in August as he has a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings over two starts with ten strikeouts.

Tommy Toledo relieved Williamson in the seventh and ran into trouble right away as he allowed a lead-off walk to Jack Murphy. Marcus Knecht then doubled to put runners on second and third and then Jon Berti would clear the bases and give Dunedin a 3-2 lead with a two-run triple.

After striking out the next two batters, Toledo allowed a single to Jonathan Jones that brought Berti home and made it a 4-2 game in favor of the Jays. After allowing another single, Toledo was lifted and Seth Harvey came in to get the last out of the inning.

Brevard County was able to string together a few singles in the top of the eighth off of Dustin Antolin and cut Dunedin's lead to 4-3 thanks to a RBI single from Shaw. With the tying run on second with one out, the Blue Jays brought in their closer Danny Barnes and he was able to retire the last two 'Tees of the inning and set Brevard down in order in the ninth to earn his 30th save of the season.

The Manatees struck out a season-high 15 times on Tuesday against Dunedin, including ten times in five innings against Blue Jays starter Sean Nolin. In three starts against Brevard over 13.2 innings, Nolin has recorded 23 strikeouts against the 'Tees.

Shaw was the only Manatee with a multi-hit night as he also drove in two runs. Shea Vucinich and John Dishon each had a double, to go along with Keen's triple for Brevard County's three extra-base hits on the night.

Despite the loss to the Jays, first place Tampa also lost so the Manatees remain one game back of the Yankees. However, Dunedin and Lakeland are both nipping on Brevard's heels as both teams are two games back of Tampa.

Brevard County will look to get back on track in the second game of their series with Dunedin on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. Drew Gagnon (0-2, 3.83) will get the start for the Manatees and he is still looking for his first win with Brevard.

Final: Nashville 3, Tacoma 2

Sounds Rally For Last At-Bat Win In Series Opener Against Tacoma

Burgos Hurls Another Quality Start, Dillard Ties Franchise Wins Record For Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jordan Brown's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Nashville Sounds a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Brown's game-winning knock, which plated Eric Farris from second and came against reliever Bobby LaFromboise (4-2), completed a three-run rally for Nashville, which trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh. It was the Sounds' 21st last at-bat victory of the year and their 13th win when trailing in the seventh inning or later.

With one out in the Nashville ninth, Farris singled to center and moved to second on a groundout. After Tacoma skipper Daren Brown elected to issue an intentional walk to Khris Davis, who had belted a game-tying homer in his previous at-bat, Brown (3-for-5) lifted the game-winning two-bagger over the head of center fielder Darren Ford on a 3-2 offering from LaFromboise.

• AUDIO: Brown Walkoff Double

Reliever Tim Dillard (1-1) was the beneficiary of the late rally and picked up his 35th victory as a Sound, matching Keith Brown's franchise record. Dillard worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the contest.

The Sounds (57-67) have scored the winning run in their final turn at the plate in seven of their last nine victories.

Nashville starter Hiram Burgos tossed his third quality start in four Triple-A outings but took a no-decision. The right-hander allowed two runs in seven innings, striking out eight batters. He departed on the short end of a 2-0 deficit before a late Sounds rally.

Tacoma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with three consecutive one-out singles off Burgos. Carlos Peguero, who recorded the Rainiers' lone multi-hit effort with a 2-for-4 evening, and Luis Rodriguez got things started with back-to-back knocks to put runners on the corners before Vinnie Catricala put the visitors on the board with an RBI single to right.

Burgos escaped a no-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth to keep the deficit at one. After the Rainiers jammed the bags on a walk, single, and hit batsman, the Nashville right-hander popped up Catricala before striking out Carlos Triunfel and Brandon Bartz in succession to quell the threat.

Tacoma left-hander Danny Hultzen made his first start since late July and worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, holding the Sounds to two hits while walking two batters and striking out three during his 64-pitch effort.

The Rainiers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh when Nick Franklin plated Ford with a two-out RBI single to center off Burgos.

Nashville got a run back in the home half of the seventh but also left runners stranded at second and third in the frame.

With one out, Logan Schafer, Edwin Maysonet, and Dayton Buller recorded three straight singles off Rainiers reliever David Pauley, the last of which made it a 2-1 contest and extended the Sounds' backstop's season-best hitting streak to four games. After the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout, Pauley struck out Caleb Gindl to escape the jam with the one-run lead intact.

The red-hot Davis -- who has hit safely in 26 of his last 28 contests -- tied the game in the eighth when he led off the bottom of the inning with solo homer to center field that cleared the 24-foot high batter's eye. The blast, which came against Pauley, was his third as a Sound and snapped Nashville's six-game home run drought at 224 plate appearances.

• AUDIO: Davis Game-Tying HR

The Sounds stranded runners at second and third for the second straight frame later in the eighth. Brown followed Davis' blast with a single that chased Pauley from the contest and moved to third on Schafer's two-out double off LaFromboise before the right-hander induced an inning-ending groundout from Maysonet.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Wednesday night. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (5-1, 3.64) -- who leads the PCL with a 0.64 ERA in August -- will man the bump for the Sounds and face Tacoma right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (4-3, 3.44).

Nashville Box Score

I'm happy for Hiram Burgos, just a couple of more stellar starts to end the season on a very nice high note (pending Sept call-up). Switching out Tim Dillard for Brandon Kintzler didn't make much sense to me at the time, but it worked out nicely for Tim and the team.

Jordan Brown (3-5,2B) was the man tonight, nuff said. Logan Schafer (2-3,2B,BB) had a couple of cheesy hits the last 2 days but he might finally be off the schnied, l'm hoping so, I'd like to see him get a Sept call. Edwin Maysonet (2-4) had the other multi-hit game for the Sounds.

Yes that's our old Darren Ford playing for Jack Z in Seattle, he's actually enjoying his best season outside of 2007.

Montgomery 4, @Huntsville 1

Huntsville Box

Montgomery got an inside-the-park HR in the top of the 1st, but a strong outing by Stars starter Johnnie Lowe kept the score at 1-0 heading into the 7th. Johnny Hellweg took over in relief... and promptly gave up a 2B, followed by a 1B, to extend the Biscuits' lead to 2-0. Fortunately, the Stars caught the 1B hitter trying for a 2B & put him out in a rundown between first & second for the first out of the inning. Hellweg issued a BB to the next batter, followed by a 1B. He then induced a popout in the infield, and struck out the next batter to escape the 7th with allowing just a single run.

Hellweg stayed in for the 8th, which he started with a BB and successful SB with the next batter at the plate. However, he then induced a swinging K followed by two groundouts to get through the inning unscathed.

After a solo HR from T.J. Mittelstaedt cut the deficit to one run, Brian Garman came on to work the 9th. He put the first two batters he faced down via a K and a groundout. Unfortunately, he then yielded a 1B & a 2B... which were followed by a fielding error that allowed both runners to score and push Montgomery's lead back to three runs. As was the story for the game, the Stars' offense couldn't come up with the runs to get the W.

Mittelstaedt: 2-5, HR, RBI

Hainley Statia: 0-4

Scooter Gennett: 2-4

Andy Gonzalez: 1-3, BB

Hunter Morris: 0-4

Brock Kjeldgaard: 1-4, 2B

Kentrail Davis: 1-4

Josh Prince: 1-4

Anderson De La Rosa: 1-4, 3B

Lowe: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HBP, 5:4 GO:AO

Hellweg: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Garman: 1 IP, 2 R/0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

-Gennett extended his hitting streak to 9 games, and has hit .487 (18-37) so far over that stretch

STARS LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT GAME

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – To open up a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Montgomery Biscuits by a final score of 4-1 on Tuesday night.

For the Stars, starting pitcher Johnnie Lowe was the hard-pressed losing pitcher, falling to 2-3 on the season after giving up just one run on four hits through six innings.

Unfortunately for Lowe, the only blemish of his evening came in the first inning. With two outs, third baseman Omar Luna hit a ball off the outfield wall that eluded center fielder Josh Prince, enabling Luna to leg out an inside-the-park home run to give the Biscuits a 1-0 lead. The inside-the-park homer was the first for Montgomery in six years.

With the score still 1-0 and Lowe out of the ballgame in the seventh inning, the Biscuits got another run off Stars reliever Johnny Hellweg. In his first outing since coming off the disabled list, Hellweg gave up a double to second baseman Derek Detrich to lead off the inning. The next at-bat, a RBI single by designated hitter Kyeong Kong put the Biscuits up 2-0.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Stars made their best effort at a comeback. With one swing of the bat, a solo home run by designated hitter T.J Mittelstaedt cut the Stars deficit to one run. The homer snapped the Stars scoreless inning streak at 25, their longest drought on the season.

However, that is the closest the Stars would get. To begin the ninth, the Biscuits scored two unearned runs off of Stars reliever Brian Garman. Up 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, Montgomery closer stranded two baserunners by striking out catcher Anderson De La Rosa and designated hitter Mittelstaedt to end the ballgame. For Yates, the save was his 14th of the season.

On offense, Mittelstaedt and second basemen Scooter Gennett both paced the Stars with two hits apiece. For Gennett, the multi-hit game for him was his eighth in the last nine games.

Game two of a five-game series will take place on Wednesday as the Stars will send RHP Ariel Pena (0-1, 5.74 ERA) to the bump. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Helena shut out on the road

Helena Independent Record

Eddie Butler hurled six scoreless innings, picking up his sixth win of the season, and the Grand Junction Rockies won their third straight game by topping the Helena Brewers 6-0 Tuesday night at Suplizio Field in Colorado.

Butler has won five of his last six starts. Tuesday’s victory was the first nine-inning shutout of the season for the Rockies.

After falling behind in the first inning in the series opener on Monday, the Rockies jumped out in front in this one. Matt Wessinger started the bottom of the first with a walk and moved to third on a David Dahl single. Dahl stole second with Ashley Graeter at the plate, and Greater knocked both baserunners in with a single to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead.

After Butler left the game, Patrick Johnson threw a scoreless inning and the Rockies added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Max White hit his second home run to make it 3-0.

Raul Fernandez threw a scoreless eighth inning and Julian Yan doubled the lead when he hit his 13th homer of the year after Graeter and Jeff Popick walked, making it 6-0.

Scott Oberg retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the win.

Dahl’s single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 26 games.

Helena center fielder Michael Reed was the only Brewer with multiple hits as he finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate. Ryan Gibbard took the loss on the mound after pitching five innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

Maryvale was also shut out, Link Reporter details on the way shortly.

So this was arguably the weakest offensive night of the minor league season, even with Khris Davis' and Jordan Brown's heroics (thanks to them for salvaging the night).

Tommy Toledo's Brevard stint hasn't gone well after his stellar Rattlers work. Just purely from a box score watching routine in a playoff chase mode, that was painful timing for that line last night. Bounce back, Tommy, we'll be praising you again...

Grand Junction Rockies 6, Helena Brewers 0

Helena Box Score

Yet another disappointing performance by the Toddler Brewers - there was really nothing going on offensively tonight. Rockies pitchers combined to allow just 6 hits all night and the Brewers didn't draw a walk all game. Michael Reed lead the charge with a 2-3 performance (both singles, as the Crew had 0 XBHs) and a stolen base, his 11th on the year. The other hits belonged to (you guessed it) Adam Giacalone, Alfredo Rodriguez, Michael Turay, and Kevin Berard.

Ryan Gibbard was your starter and he took a tough luck loss, going 5 IP allowing only 3 hits and 2 runs (earned), though he did post a less than stellar 4/3 K/BB. Damien Magnifico and his 103 mph fastball pitched 3 innings of "less-than-Magnifico" relief. He allowed 4 earned runs on two hits (each were homers) while walking 3 and striking out 2, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Helena Play by Play

The 2nd might have been Helena's best chance at avoiding the doughnut:

Helena Top of the 2nd

Emmanuel Quiles grounds out, shortstop Matt Wessinger to first baseman Correlle Prime.

Michael Reed singles on a ground ball to center fielder David Dahl.

With Raul Mondesi batting, Michael Reed steals (11) 2nd base.

Raul Mondesi called out on strikes.

With Michael Turay batting, wild pitch by Eddie Butler, Michael Reed to 3rd.

Michael Turay strikes out swinging.

Grand Junction puts the game away with a 3-run bomb:

Grand Junction Bottom of the 8th

  • David Dahl grounds out, second baseman Christopher McFarland to first baseman Adam Giacalone.
    Ashley Graeter walks.
With Jeffrey Popick batting, Ashley Graeter steals (1) 2nd base.
    Jeffrey Popick walks.
Julian Yan homers (13) on a fly ball to center field. Ashley Graeter scores. Jeffrey Popick scores.
Correlle Prime grounds out to first baseman Adam Giacalone.
    Michael Ramirez strikes out swinging.

AZL Mariners 4, AZL Brewers 0

AZL Box Score

Really similar to the Helena report - there simply wasn't any offense to speak of. The Baby Brewers had only 4 hits and didn't draw a single walk. Edgardo Rivera had a double, Malcolm Dowell singled twice, and Alan Sharkey added the last single. That's it. Three separate Brewers had a silver sombrero and the team struck out 12 times in total. Clint Coulter didn't play, but Dustin Houle did pick a batter off at 1st, catch a guy stealing 2nd, and there were no errors, so at least the defense was fairly clean.

Francisco Rivero started and gave up 2 earned runs in 2 innings on 4 hits with a strikeout. Josh Butler gave up a run in an inning of rehab relief, Juan Francisco kept the game close by only allowing 1 run over the next 4 IP, and Carlos Sosa pitched a clean 8th inning and threw in a K to boot. Francisco, at least, had a nice outing, giving up 3 hits and a walk, but managing to strike out 6 over his 4 frames.

AZL Play by Play

The 3rd and the 6th might have been Arizona's only real shot:

AZL Top of the 3rd

  • Renaldo Jenkins bunt grounds out, pitcher Tyler Pike to first baseman Kristian Brito.
    Taylor Smith-Brennan strikes out swinging.
Malcolm Dowell singles on a line drive to right fielder Gabriel Guerrero.
Edgardo Rivera doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Cory Scammell. Malcolm Dowell to 3rd.
Jose Sermo called out on strikes.

AZL Top of the 6th

  • Defensive switch from left field to first base for Cory Scammell.
Defensive Substitution: Charles Jimenez replaces first baseman Kristian Brito, batting 7th, playing left field.
Malcolm Dowell singles on a ground ball to third baseman Joseph DeCarlo. Malcolm Dowell advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by third baseman Joseph DeCarlo.
    Edgardo Rivera strikes out swinging.
With Jose Sermo batting, wild pitch by Tyler Pike, Malcolm Dowell to 3rd.
    Jose Sermo strikes out swinging.
Dustin Houle flies out to center fielder Isaiah Yates.
