Rockies rally for walk-off win over Brewers

Helena Independent Record

Julian Yan ripped a walk-off RBI single to left field with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Grand Junction Rockies rallied for a 6-5 Pioneer League win over the Helena Brewers at Sam Zuplizio Field on Monday night.

The Brewers led 5-4 entering the Rockies’ final at bat after Alfredo Rodriguez’s two-out single in the top of the seventh inning scored Chris McFarland.

Grand Junction sent five batters to the plate in the ninth, though, and got a leadoff double from Matt Wessinger to start the rally. David Dahl then flew out to advance Wessinger to third before Helena reliever Martin Viramontes was pulled for Taylor Mangum.

Ashley Graeter then singled to right to score Wessinger and, after Mangum intentionally walked Jeffrey Popick, Yan brought Graeter home to seal the victory.

Michael Mason (2-0) pitched two innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts to get the win for the Rockies.

Mangum (0-1) took the loss and the blown save for the Brewers.

Graeter was 2 for 5 with three RBIs to lead the Grand Junction offense. Popick added a 3 for 4 performance and Yan was 2 for 5 with the one RBI.

The Rockies outhit the Brewers 12-9 on the night, getting six of those hits and four runs off Helena starter Taylor Wall, who lasted just four innings.

McFarland led the Brewers’ offense with a three-run home run off of Rockies starter Jayson Aquino in the top of the third inning. Rodriguez was 1 for 4 with Helena’s only other RBI on the evening.

Helena Brewers 5, Grand Junction Rockies 6

Box Score

A heartbreaking loss here to extend my LR career to 0-5. Taylor wall got the start for the Brewers and was less than inspiring - 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K. He gave up a home run and walked too many, but I do like the Ks. Joel Pierce pitched a nice inning of relief (1 H, 1 K), and the Brewers took a 1 run lead into the 9th due to 3 really nice innings by Martin Viramontes. Martin allowed a leadoff double and got a sacrifice out before he was lifted for Tyler Magnum. Magnum promptly allows a single, blowing the save. A passed ball and an intentional walk later, the winning run is at 3rd, then is singled home by Julian Yan. Helena loses a stunner.

Offensively, the Toddler Brewers weren't too shabby. Chris McFarland, who is quickly moving to nickname status, lead the charge with a 3 run home run and a single in 4 trips to the plate. He kicked in a stolen base in his 3rd straight game as well. Yonki Hernandez, who will never need a nickname, walked twice, singled twice, and scored a run in a great evening for him, though he was caught stealing. The Helena Brewers played baseball today, so Adam Giacalone got a hit. He's now up to .364 for the year, which is just bananas. On the not so bright side, Michael Reed went 0-4 with a silver sombrero.

AL Royals 14, AZL Brewers 3

Box Score

The Baby Brewers didn't play a close one like the Toddler Crew - they just got destroyed tonight. Every single Royal was on base at least twice tonight except Mark Donato, who homered. The Brewers, on the other hand, combined for 6 total hits, only 1 of which went for extra bases, and 2 walks, (Edgardo Rivera, Malcolm Dowell, and Renaldo Jenkins were each on base twice). For comparison's sake, they also committed 4 errors and had a passed ball. Jalen Harris really struggled - he went 0-4 with a golden sombrero and committed an error to boot.

On the mound, it was ugly, but you can hardly blame them. Of the 14 runs, only 6 were earned. However, the Brewers staff didn't help their own cause, walking 8 and allowing 12 hits. Anthony Banda was your starter and he allowed 7 runs (3 ER) in 4.1 IP before being lifted for Joel Dicent. The young Latin American righty went 3.2 IP, allowed 6 hits, but kept the damage to 1 R (earned), though he only struck out 1. Alejandro Lavandero was up next, but he didn't escape the 9th, giving up an extra 6 runs (2 earned) on 3 walks and a dinger in only .2 IP before Carlos Sosa mercifully put this one to bed.

WARNING: Not safe for work.

In lieu of listing actual innings, here's the Crew's fielding report for the night:

E: Smith-Brennan (11, fielding), Harris (5, throw), Sermo (15, fielding), Jenkins (11, throw).

PB: Coulter (17).

Outfield assists: Dowell (Ramos, M at home)

Kudos to Malcolm Dowell, who was on base twice and managed to prevent a run defensively.
