There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Rattlers fall to LumberKings

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings cracked fifteen hits and scored nine runs on Sunday afternoon to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-4. Clinton jumped to an early lead and never let the Rattlers get back into the game at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

Clinton (53-64 overall, 30-19 second half) had the lead four batters into the game. They had two on with one out in the top of the first inning and Ramon Morla cracked a home run to left field for a 3-0 lead. Dan Paolini made it 4-0 with a two-out RBI single in the second.

 

Greg Hopkins cut that four run deficit in half for Wisconsin in the bottom of the second inning. Cameron Garfield singled with one out and Hopkins followed with a two-run homer to left. The home run was the first for Hopkins since June 9 and made the score 4-2.

 

Clinton added to their lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Phillips. That was the final run allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher David Goforth.

 

The LumberKings put the game away with a four run sixth inning against reliever Michael White. The LumberKings loaded the bases on a single, a hit batsman, and a single. Paolini singled in the first run of the frame. White would get a 4-6-3 double play for a pair of outs, but a run scored to make it 7-2. Blash followed with a long home run to left and the LumberKings were up 9-2.

 

Wisconsin (68-50, 24-25) got a run in the bottom of the seventh. Ben McMahan doubled to start the inning and went to third on a wild pitch. Cameron Garfield's grounder to short scored McMahan.

 

Greg Hopkins struck again in the bottom of the ninth. He singled with two outs to score McMahan for the final run of the game. Hopkins drove in three of the four runs scored by the Rattlers on Sunday.

 

The final game of the series is Monday night. Eric Semmelhack (1-1, 5.82) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton counters with Seon-Gi Kim (3-3, 5.03). Game time is 7:05pm.

 

Monday is a B104.7 Qdoba Q*Monday. Stop by the Qdoba by the Fox River Mall for lunch on Monday, purchase a lunch entrée and you receive a free ticket to the games.

David Goforth started for the Rattlers and gave up five runs over five innings. He allowed eight hits and walked four while striking out six. Michael White relieved Goforth but he also struggled, allowing four runs on seven hits over four innings.

 

Greg Hopkins led the way for the Timber Rattlers offensively, going 2-4 with his ninth home run of the season. He knocked in three of the four Wisconsin runs. Cameron Garfield also had a 2-4 day with a run scored and an RBI. Ben McMahan went 1-3 with a double and a walk and scored two runs. Brandon Macias had the only other hit for the Rattlers.

The Stars were kept off the scoreboard for the second straight game today, managing only five hits (one XBH) and five BB.

 

Yoannis Negrin -- making his first start in affiliated ball this season, after making 24 appearances for the Tabasco Olmecs of the Mexican League -- went 5 IP and only allowed the Stars to get one hit and one BB against him. Three Smokies RPs combined to shut the Stars out the rest of the way, but Huntsville missed legit scoring opportunites in the 6th, 7th, & 8th.

 

Jimmy Nelson really struggled in this one: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R/3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K, 3:2 GO:AO, 89 TP (45 strikes). However, Brian Garman, R.J. Seidel, and Darren Byrd combined to shut out the Smokies after that, although Byrd allowed six baserunners (3 H, 3 BB) and two SBs in his two IP. The Stars had chances to get back in this one, but weren't able to come up with the timely hits needed.

 

Scooter Gennett (1-4, SB) singled in his final PA (8th inning) to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Hainley Statia (1-4, 2B), Andy Gonzalez (1-4), Hunter Morris (1-4), and Brock Kjeldgaard (1-4) were the other Stars with hits. Lee Haydel walked three times, while Josh Prince and Adam Weisenburger drew a walk apiece. Every Huntsville positional starter reached base at least once via either H or BB... I wonder how common that is when a team gets shut out. Domnit Bolivar and Kentrail Davis each went hitless in their single PH appearances.

 

Apparently the Stars had some pretty big complaints with the HP umpire in this one. A rarely-seen automatic strike call (see rule 6.02) for a strikeout of Gonzalez in the top of the 7th might have led to things getting heated between the HP umpire & both pitching coach Chris Hook and Weisenburger in the bottom of the 7th:

It actually looks like Weisenburger was ejected after the 7th had ended, because there's no note of a defensive replacement coming on for him until the start of the bottom of the 8th -- unless the game log is actually correct, and Weisenburger re-entered to play for his ejected self, and was ejected a second time at the beginning of the top of the 8th . The ordering of certain events in these MiLB game logs leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least. The way these are sometimes structured makes it impossible to tell which event(s) came before which. Hopefully the Stars put together a game story that can explain all the drama in the 7th.

Once Negrin was out of the game, the Stars did their best to scratch out some runs, but three consecutive rallies fell short:

Brevard edges Tampa to sweep series

Jungmann earns tenth win as 'Tees win 3-2

Manatees starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann earned his tenth win of the season as he tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. Brevard County defeated the Tampa Yankees, 3-2 on Sunday night and earned a sweep of the first place Yanks. The 'Tees are now one game out of first. VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees mustered just two hits, but starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann struck out eight in 7.2 innings as the 'Tees defeated the Tampa Yankees, 3-2 on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win gave Brevard County a three-game sweep of the first place Yanks and the Manatees are now just one game out of first.

 

Just like the first two games of the series, one big inning at the plate was all that the Manatees (28-22 second half, 57-61 overall) needed and that came in the second inning with two outs. With John Dishon on first and Franklin Romero Jr. at the dish, Dishon reached second on a wild pitch from Nik Turley and then stole third. Romero Jr. would eventually walk to put runners at the corners.

 

Now with Reggie Keen at the plate, Turley tried to fake a pickoff throw to first but when he did that, Dishon took off from third and stole home for the first run of the game. Keen then took the 2-2 offering from Turley and deposited over the left field wall for his third homer of the season to give the 'Tees a 3-0 lead.

 

Jungmann (10-6, 3.61) and Brevard would give up its only runs of the game in the top of the third as the Yanks (29-21, 59-58) recorded four singles in the inning that led to two runs. Jungmann allowed six hits overall and walked two as he became the first Brevard County pitcher since Evan Anundsen and Amaury Rivas in 2009 to win ten games.

 

Alan Williams pitched the final 1.1 innings and earned his second save of the season as the 'Tees earned their first three-game sweep since they swept the Dunedin Blue Jays in late June.

 

Following an off day on Monday, the Manatees will hit the road for a six-game road trip that will begin on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. against the Blue Jays (25-23, 67-48).

One more impressive element to Jungmann's strong outing -- the box score notes T: 2:30 (1:27 delay). I realize the delay likely came before the game started, but that kind of thing can definitely affect a pitcher & throw him off his game. For a potential example of that, Jungmann's Tampa counterpart Nik Turley, sporting a BB/9 rate of 3.3 this season (even after today's game), walked six batters in his 5 IP.

Bees Edge Sounds, 2-1

Baker Tosses Five Scoreless Frames For Nashville In No-Decision

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Efren Navarro drove in a pair of runs to power the visiting Salt Lake Bees to a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

 

Salt Lake right-hander Garrett Richards (6-3) turned in a solid start for the Bees to earn the victory, holding Nashville to one run on five hits while striking out seven batters over 8 1/3 innings.

 

Sounds starter Brian Baker continued his recent string of outstanding pitching performances with five scoreless innings but Salt Lake scored two runs against the Nashville bullpen to claim the victory.

 

The right-hander took a no-decision after he allowed only two hits and issued four walks while striking out six batters in his five frames. In his last nine outings for the Sounds, Baker has posted a 3.02 ERA (15er/44.2ip).

 

Baker worked into and out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth. After Luis Jimenez led off with a single and Kole Calhoun and Navarro drew consecutive walks, the right-hander recovered to strike out Ryan Langerhans and Cory Aldridge in succession before inducing an inning-ending groundout from Ed Lucas.

 

Nashville broke up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a run off Richards. The Sounds loaded the bases on singles by Caleb Gindl and Khris Davis followed by a two-out walk drawn by Sean Halton. Logan Schafer followed with an RBI infield single to Gindl with the night's first run.

Salt Lake knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth against Sounds reliever Jesus Sanchez. Jimenez -- who scored both of the Bees' runs in the game -- drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a Calhoun single, and raced home with the tying run on Navarro's sacrifice fly to center.

 

The Bees took the lead in the eighth against Donovan Hand. Jimenez reached on a one-out single and scored on Navarro's two-out RBI double to left-center to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

 

The Sounds -- who etched out last at-bat wins the previous two evenings -- mounted a late rally once again in the ninth. With one out, Taylor Green and Sean Halton recorded back-to-back singles to chase Richards from the contest. Bobby Cassevah took over on the Salt Lake hill and retired Schafer and Jason Jaramillo on flyouts to secure the victory and notch his eighth save of the year.

 

Hand (3-3) was saddled with the loss after surrendering the deciding run in his two innings of action.

 

The clubs wrap up their four-game season series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Monday. Right-hander Tyler Thornburg (1-0, 2.40) will make his Greer Stadium debut when he mans the bump for the Sounds to face Salt Lake southpaw Brad Mills (5-7, 5.09).

STARS SHUTOUT IN SECOND STRAIGHT GAME

KODAK, Tenn. – In the rubber match of a five-game series, the Huntsville Stars were blanked by the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 4-0 on Sunday night at Smokies park.

 

A night after losing by a score of 2-0, the Stars were shutout again on Sunday by a combination of four Smokies pitchers. Leading that barrage was starter Yoanner Negrin, who gave up just one hit against the Stars through five innings in his Double-A debut. The start for Negrin was also his first in affiliated baseball during the 2012 season.

 

Aside from Negrin, relievers Zack Rosscup and Casey Weathers blanked the Stars for the next 3.2 innings until closer Frank Batista entered the game with two outs in the eighth. The Southern League All-Star recorded the final four outs for his 21st save of the season.

 

Leading the way on offense for the Smokies was first baseman Justin Bour, who delivered an RBI single in the first inning and a RBI groundout in the third inning that gave the Smokies a 2-0 lead. Other than Bour, a pair of RBI doubles from Negrin and shortstop Junior Lake gave Tennessee all the run support they needed.

 

On the pitching side for Huntsville, RHP Jimmy Nelson fell to 1-3 on the year with the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings while striking out six and walking five batters.

 

To close out the game, the Stars got four innings of combined scoreless relief from LHP Brian Garman, RHP R.J Seidel and RHP Darren Byrd.

 

Offensively, left fielder Lee Haydel got on base three of his four plate appearances, drawing a walk all three times. Shortstop Hainley Statia went 1-4 and hit the team’s only extra-base hit of the night, a double. The Stars bats combined for just five hits and stranded eight baserunners

 

For the Stars, the loss snapped their streak of four consecutive series victories. The defeat also dropped them to 3-10 in series-deciding contests in 2012.

 

After an off-day on Monday, the Stars will resume play on Wednesday at Joe Davis Stadium as they open up a five-game series at home against the Montgomery Biscuits. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

My link reporting losing streak continues - now 0-4 between the rookie ball teams.

 

Zachary Quintana got the start for the Baby Crew and had a fairly solid outing. 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 2, BB, 2 K, 9/5 GB/FB. He had given up no runs through 5, but a home run in the 6th sealed the deal for the Dodgers, as the Brewers just didn't have it offensively tonight. Daniel Keller went the final 2 IP, and, in Daniel Keller style, allowed a run.

 

Clint Coulter lead the way offensively, going 1-2 with an RBI and a pair of walks, though he was caught stealing. His defense might still have some questions, but no one is doubting his approach at the plate, especially for a young guy. I think it's time to start getting excited about his debut. Dionis Hinojosa (1-4, SB), managed to make his only trip on base count, as he stole a base and the only good-guy run of the game on Coulter's knock. Beyond that, there wasn't a whole lot going on offensively - the Brewers mustered only 6 total hits and 1 XBH (a double by Jose Sermo) and while the 5 waks is nice to see, there just wasn't enough firepower to get guys across the plate tonight.

Let's see, the teams combined for 25 runs but only 14 RBI. The Brewers scored ten runs on only five hits. The game featured 17 walks, 12 drawn by the Cerveceritos. Brewer batters were also plunked three times, for 15 free passes to the basepaths. Eight of the runs the Brewers allowed were unearned. Intrigued by this game yet?

 

No Brewer had more than one hit, but CF Yunior Santana walked four times. SS Carlos Belonis left the game very early, it's been tough to follow his injury / playing time exploits as of late.

 

18-year-old RHP Milton Gomez started, and while his ERA won't suffer too much (7 R, 2 ER), it was obviously a rough outing.

Class remains in session for Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE — With just over 20 games left in the regular schedule, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson isn’t worried about the coming playoffs.

 

“To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it yet,” Erickson said Sunday after the Timber Rattlers managed only six hits in a 9-4 Midwest League loss to Clinton at Time Warner Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

“You want to go into the postseason as healthy as possible. When we get to about a week or 10 days, we’ll look at all that. Right now, we’re trying to get better every day. We’re too busy taking care of the teaching moments on this team right now.”

 

Ah, yes, teaching moments. In Class A professional baseball, those are more numerous than political robocalls in Wisconsin this year. Every game and every situation presents another chance to fill a young mind with baseball knowledge.

 

For instance, Rattlers starter David Goforth (8-7) struggled with control on Sunday, but still muscled through five innings. Erickson really didn’t have a choice but to stay with Goforth, who allowed eight hits and walked five.

 

“We used a bunch of pitchers out of the bullpen yesterday (in a 13-inning win), so he knew he was going to have to eat up some innings out there, at least five,” Erickson said. “Then Michael White was the most rested guy we had in the bullpen, so if he could stay competitive we were going to give him the work.”

 

White had made just one appearance since being called up to Wisconsin, getting hit hard in two innings and holding an 18.00 earned run average. He allowed four runs in his first inning Sunday but then calmed to get nine outs in the next 11 batters he faced.

 

“He’s a young guy and he was shaking his head a little bit out there after that first inning,” Erickson said. “We had to tell him that he had to have better body language and better tempo, and have the mindset that the score is 0-0. Be sure that we’re learning and competing with each pitch.”

 

Even for the players who have spent the entire season with the Rattlers, including through their first-half division title, there are lessons to be learned. Infielder Greg Hopkins was a Midwest League all-star in June, but had by his own admission “been missing pitches” while hitting just .152 over the last nine games before Sunday, dropping his average to .266 from a pre-all-star game mark of .313.

 

That’s why a two-for-four day, including a two-run homer in the second inning that temporarily cut the LumberKings’ lead to 4-2, was so important. It was Hopkins’ ninth homer of the year but his first since June 9.

 

“It’s been a while,” he said. “It was a straight fastball on 3-1, so it was a good hitter’s count. It felt nice to finally be aggressive and square one up.”

 

The ups and downs of a baseball season is demanding enough, but add in call-ups and new arrivals, and a team at the end of a season can look nothing like the roster on opening day or even the halfway mark.

 

“Minor-league ball is constantly evolving,” Hopkins said. “In college, you have your core group of guys that go through as freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. But here, guys can be here one day and gone the next.”

It’s just one more lesson for Erickson to provide for his team.

 

“That is the big challenge over the course of the season,” he said. “We try to keep the clubhouse all going the same direction. The nature of the business is that these guys move on as individuals, but you have to stay consistent with your message. Guys who come in have to jump on board with that. There are no individuals in the clubhouse.”
