Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Not a whole lot to talk about from this one. Only four Stars batters registered hits -- one of them being starter Evan Anundsen (1-2, 2B) -- but interestingly enough, the other three guys tallied two apiece. Scooter Gennett (2-4) extended his hitting streak... and a multi-hit/gm. hitting streak at that... to seven games. Andy Gonzalez (2-4) and Brock Kjeldgaard (2-3) also singled twice. The only XBH Huntsville got was Anundsen's 2B.

 

Smokies starter Dae-Eun Rhee (6 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 3 K) combined with RPs Tony Zych and Bryan Schlitter to shut out the Stars tonight. In fact, they didn't allow any baserunners beyond Huntsville's 7 total hits. The Stars were retired in order from the 5th inning on. Ouch.

 

Anundsen held his own in this pitchers' duel: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 5:3 GO:AO, 64 TP (46 strikes). He also maximized his effectiveness on a pretty limited pitch count, due to him having pitched in relief on both 8/7 and 8/8. Getting through 5 innings on just 64 pitches is no small feat, but throwing strikes 72% of the time certainly doesn't hurt.

 

Dan Meadows took over, and allowed single runs in both the 6th & 7th. Kyle Heckathorn came on and worked a very clean K--groundout--K 9th, but Huntsville just never really got anything going on offense, aside from a pair of two-out 1Bs in the 1st, and Anundsen's 2B to lead off the 3rd.

 

-Kentrail Davis had a rough night: he went 0-3 to end his 7-game hitting streak, and committed his second error of the season as well.

The Stars were able to get Hunter Morris (0-4) up in the first with two men on & two outs, but he wasn't able to come up with the big hit to kick the night off right:

The closest Tennessee got to scoring on Anundsen was also in the 1st, but they opted to sac bunt with their #2 hitter after leadoff man Matt Szczur singled and advanced to second base on Davis's error. As Brewers fans can attest, small ball in the 1st inning always seems like poor strategy:

Big first inning propels 'Tees past Tampa

Brevard tops Yanks 6-2, now two games back of first

VIERA, Fla. - For the second consecutive night, the Brevard County Manatees had a big first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Tampa Yankees, 6-2 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win over Tampa, coupled with a Lakeland loss, puts the Manatees in second place and two games behind the first place Yankees.

 

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Reggie Keen started off the inning by drawing a walk. Nick Shaw then singled and the bases would be loaded after Jason Rogers walked. A single to left off the bat of Mike Walker would score Keen and Shaw as the 'Tees (27-22 second half, 56-61 overall) took a 2-1 lead.

 

Two batters later, Cody Hawn would walk to load the bases again. Parker Berberet then cleared them with a three-run double to right to give Brevard a 5-1 lead.

 

Tampa (29-20, 59-57) would score one run again in the top of the second but that was all they would get off of Manatees starting pitcher Matt Miller (1-0, 3.60) and Brevard the rest of the way. In his 'Tees debut, Miller allowed two runs on six hits in five innings of work, while walking one and striking out two.

 

Eric Arnett threw four perfect innings in relief of Miller and struck out four, for the rare four-inning save.

 

The Manatees added an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single from Walker. Both Walker and Berberet had two hits and three RBI each. Shaw, Rogers and John Dishon each had two hits as well.

 

Brevard County will go for the three-game sweep of the first place Yankees as the two teams close out the series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m.

 

Taylor Jungmann (9-6, 3.69) will take the hill for the 'Tees as he is in search of his tenth win of the season. In three starts against Tampa this season, Jungmann is 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA.

 

The Yanks will send southpaw Nik Turley (8-3, 2.69) to the mound. Turley is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four starts against Brevard in 2012.

Ramirez delivers game-winning hit in the thirteenth

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers almost let one get away on Saturday night against the Clinton LumberKings. The LumberKings scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings. Nick Ramirez knocked in the winning run with a two-out bases loaded single in the thirteenth inning for a 9-8 win. The win was the third in a row for Wisconsin.

 

Rafael Neda put the Rattlers (68-49 overall, 24-24 second half) up 1-0 in the second inning. Neda's double high off the wall in left field scored Greg Hopkins from first base.

 

Ben McMahan made it 4-0 in favor of the Timber Rattlers in the third inning. Max Walla singled and Brandon Macias doubled to start the inning. McMahan followed with his tenth home run of the season, a three-run blast over the wall in left-center.

 

The LumberKings (52-63, 29-18) scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Patrick Brady hit a homer for the first Clinton hit of the game off Wisconsin starting pitcher Chad Pierce. They added a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Jamal Austin.

 

Wisconsin added to their lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Adrian Williams drove in a run with a single in the sixth. A balk called on Clinton reliever David Colvin allowed Macias to score from third and the Rattlers were up 6-2.

 

Pierce left the game after seven innings. He allowed the two runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts. He did not figure into the decision.

 

Clinton got to within a run in the top of the eighth inning as they scored three runs off Rattlers reliever Michael Strong. The LumberKings had runners at first and second with no outs and an error on a force play at second allowed a run to score. Dan Paolini followed with a two-run double and Clinton was down 6-5 with the tying run at second with no outs. Strong would escape the inning with the lead.

 

The Rattlers got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Consecutive RBI doubles by Carlos George and Max Walla with two outs drove put the Rattlers up 8-5.

 

But, Clinton came back. A double and an error put two runners on with one out. Strong got the second out with a strikeout. But, Austin singled in a run. Then, Paolini tied the game with his second two-run double of the game.

 

The game stayed tied 8-8 until the bottom of the thirteenth inning due to stellar relief work from Stosh Wawrzasek and Tyler Cravy of the Rattlers and Matt Brazis and Stephen Shackelford for Clinton.

 

Wawrzasek and Cravy combined to work four scoreless innings and record six strikeouts. Brazis struck out five in three scoreless frames and Shackelford pitched a scoreless twelfth with a pair of strikeouts.

 

Shackelford retired the first batter in the bottom of the thirteenth. Then, George singled to center. Walla's fly ball to left was dropped and Wisconsin had two runners on with one out. A wild pitch moved both George and Walla up a base and led to an intentional walk to Macias, who had four hits and reached base six times on Saturday.

 

The LumberKings got the second out on a strikeout and that brought Ramirez to the plate. The Rattlers first baseman lined the first pitch from Shackelford into right field for a single to drive in George with the winning run. The 'walkoff' hit was the third of the season for Ramirez and Wisconsin got to celebrate their tenth 'walkoff' win at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium this season.

 

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Wisconsin will have David Goforth (8-6, 4.88) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Clinton has Jordan Shipers (4-5, 3.80) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 1:05pm.

Every Timber Rattlers starter had at least one hit. Nick Ramirez had an 0-6 night before he came through with the clutch hit in the bottom of the 13th inning. As Chris mentioned, that's Ramirez's third walk-off hit of the season. One batter earlier Ben McMahan crushed what looked for a second like a game winning grand slam, but it went foul. (Carlos Gomez would have been proud of the bat flip by McMahan). He did hit his 10th home run of the season earlier in the game as part of a 2-6 night. Brandon Macias had a great offensive night. He went 4-5 with a walk, scored two runs and stole a base. Yadiel Rivera was 3-6 with a double. Carlos George and Max Walla each were 2-7.

 

Chad Pierce started and went seven strong innings. He allowed two runs and struck out six and was in line for the win when he left the game. Mike Strong came on in relief and allowed six runs in two innings, though only two were earned. Stosh Wawrzasek did what Stosh has done all season since joining the T-Rats. He allowed just one hit over three innings. He has been incredible for the Rattlers, allowing just two earned runs in 24.1 innings. Tyler Cravy worked a scoreless 13th for the win.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and win 5-3 over the Salt Lake Bees on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. The win was the Sounds' second consecutive come-from-behind victory against the Bees and 12th of the season.

 

Twenty of Nashville's 56 victories this season have come when the Sounds score the winning run in their final turn at the plate, which has been the case in six of the club's last eight wins.

 

Designated hitter Taylor Green led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI.

 

Trailing 3-0 entering the eighth, Nashville batted around during their five-run rally, doing damage against Jordan Walden in his first rehab appearance for the Angels. Walden began the inning by allowing singles to Logan Schafer and Eric Farris, sandwiched around an Edwin Maysonet hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Outfielder Caleb Gindl brought home the first run on a deep sacrifice fly to center. Khris Davis then blasted a ground rule double just beyond the reach of the Salt Lake right fielder to score Maysonet and remove Walden from the contest.

First baseman Jordan Brown then hit a weak grounder to third, which was booted by Salt Lake and allowed the tying run to score. Davis scored the go-ahead run on the third pitch of Green's at-bat, which was a wild pitch that bounced into the Salt Lake dugout. Green would cap the five-run rally with an RBI single on the next pitch from reliever Adam Russell.

 

In a no-decision, Nashville starter Wily Peralta gave up one run on a solo homer while fanning six in seven innings of work. The quality start was his team-leading eighth of the season. Perez (4-0) backed into the victory. Wooten struck out two in a perfect ninth to end the contest for his fourth save.

 

In his fourth start with the Bees, Salt Lake starter Barry Enright tossed seven shutout innings of three-hit ball while striking out four. The 26-year-old had a perfect game until Green doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

 

Salt Lake catcher Hank Conger belted a two-out, solo homer in the second inning to give Salt Lake an early 1-0 advantage. The long ball the backstop's seventh of the season.

 

The Bees added their final two runs in the top of the eighth for a 3-0 lead. With runners on first and second and one out, Kole Couhoun grounded into a possible inning-ending double play. However, Farris was only able to throw out the runner at first base. Next batter Luis Jimenez then lined a two-run double down the left field line against reliever Juan Perez.

 

The Sounds and Bees will continue their series at 6:35 pm CT on Sunday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Brian Baker (2-4, 5.03) takes the mound for Nashville against Salt Lake righty Garrett Richards (5-3, 5.03).

STARS SHUTOUT BY SMOKIES

 

KODAK, Tenn. – Three Tennessee Smokies pitchers combined to shutout the Huntsville Stars as they fell by a score of 2-0 on Saturday evening at Smokies Park.

 

The loss wasted a tremendous effort by Stars starting pitcher Evan Anundsen, who took a no-decision after pitching five innings of shutout, two-hit baseball.

 

With the game still scoreless in the fifth inning, the Smokies got all the run support they needed off of Stars reliever Dan Meadows. In the sixth inning, an RBI single from Jae-Hoon Ha broke the scoreless tie. Then, in the seventh inning, a two-out RBI single by catcher Mike Brenly gave Tennessee a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

 

On the pitching side, Smokies starting pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee improved to 8-6 on the season after he threw six shutout innings, giving up six hits and striking out four in the process. To finish off the shutout, reliever Tony Zych tossed two scoreless frames and closer Brian Schlitter shut the door in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

 

For the Stars, Meadows took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year. Aside from Meadows and Anundsen, reliever Kyle Heckathorn also threw an inning of scoreless relief.

 

On offense, second baseman Scooter Gennett recorded his seventh consecutive multi-hit game with 2-for-4 night at the plate. Both third baseman Andy Gonzalez and right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard had two hits apiece.

 

With the loss, Huntsville failed to capture their fifth consecutive series win, as the Smokies and Stars have both won two games with the rubber match hanging in the balance. The scoreless defeat also capped off the seventh time the Stars have been shutout this season.

 

The series-deciding contest of a five-game series between the two teams will take place on Sunday as the Stars will send RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-2, 4.44 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is at 4:00 CT.

Timber Rattlers notes: Wisconsin pitchers can learn from Marcum

GRAND CHUTE — The Beloit Snappers will probably get a bit of a boost in ticket sales this Wednesday for the game at Pohlman Field against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

 

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum is expected to make his second rehab start for the Rattlers that day.

 

While Marcum is all business when he’s with the Rattlers and focused on what he needs to accomplish, Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson hopes his staff of possible future Brewers pitchers puts Marcum’s approach to the game under a microscope.

 

“To be very honest, be repetitive,” said Erickson on what he wants his pitchers to learn from Marcum. “That’s the one thing that stands out with him. That’s the one thing our pitching coach (Dave Chavarria) talks to our pitchers about.

 

Staying consistent with your delivery, keeping your hand speed, believing in the grip of the pitch and making it look to the hitters like all the pitches are the same.”

 

Rafael Neda, who was the catcher for Friday’s game with Marcum on the mound, said that Marcum’s routine for getting ready for the game was different than the standard routine that Rattlers starters go through.

 

“He has his own routine,” Neda said. “I liked it. It was a little more relaxed in a way but he was really focussed on what he was doing. He knew what he had to do to get ready for the game.”

 

Neda and Marcum did discuss the starting lineup for Cedar Rapids.

 

“We talked a little bit about it,” Neda said. “But he was mainly focused on himself more than the other team. I think that’s a good thing.”

 

Record broken: Brandon Macias might have earned himself the nickname Bruiser on Friday.

 

When the infielder was hit by a pitch from Cedar Rapids starter Austin Wood, it marked the 19th time Macias has been drilled this season to set a Rattlers record.

 

Luis Tinoco had held the record of getting hit 18 times, a mark he set in 1996.

 

Strategy session: The Timber Rattlers don’t do it a lot but, for those watching the games against Cedar Rapids, you’ve seen the Rattlers put on a shift against select batters where only the third baseman is on the left side of the infield.

 

"We have spray charts on all the hitters,” Erickson said. “This is a team that we’ve played quite a bit within our division. They have some left-handed hitters that are highly pull on the ground.

 

“We don’t do it all the time. We don’t do it just to do it but, when the spray chart shows an astronomical amount of balls to the right side, we play the percentages.

It just so happens they have three or four guys in their lineup that the spray charts say play that way.”

 

Start another one: When Chadwin Stang’s 19-game hitting streak ended with a zero-for-four game against Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, it gave him the third-longest hitting streak in Rattlers’ history.

 

Tinoco had a 27-game streak in 1996, while Josh Womack in 2005 had a run of 22 games with a hit.

 

Stang batted .354 during his hitting streak, going 29-for-82.

 

Refreshing wins: Friday’s doubleheader sweep probably got a collective sigh of relief in the Rattlers locker room.

 

Wisconsin had gotten off to a sluggish start during August, going 2-6 and being outscored 25-5 in its previous two games.

 

“We got hammered the last two days,” Erickson said. “We lost four in a row. They beat us up the first day in here. It was really nice to get five runs on them in the first inning and then we were able to hang on in that first game. Then we get a great pitching performance from (Mark) Williams in the nightcap. That was kind of the perfect deal.”

 

Double-digit K’s: When Williams struck out 11 over seven innings in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, it was the first time this season that a Rattlers pitcher reached double digits in strikeouts.

 

Michael Strong struck out nine on May 17 against Burlington and July 20 versus Great Lakes. Jacob Barnes struck out nine against Clinton on June 12 and against Burlington on Aug. 3.

Voyagers take charge early to earn win

The Voyagers scored early and often Saturday night at Kindrick Legion Field. After tallying one run in each of the first three innings, it was the five-run fourth that proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Helena Brewers. When all was said and done, the Voyagers escaped town with an 11-3 victory and a two game sweep.

 

The Brewers who entered the night having been shut out in three consecutive games, managed nine hits and three walks in Saturday's action. Leading the charge was first baseman Adam Giacalone, second baseman Chris McFarland and catcher Paul Eshleman.

 

Giacalone, who currently sits third in the league in hitting, went 2-for-4 with one RBI. The multi-hit performance raises Giacalone's batting average to .367 on the season.

 

For the Voyagers, the game was highlighted by multi-hit performances from Yoandy Barroso, Brent Tanner and Zachary Voight. The trio combined for eight of the 12 Great Falls hits and seven of the nine RBI.

 

On the mound, reliever Andrew Virgili earned his second victory of the season on the strength of two shutout innings. Brewers starter Preston Gainey was tabbed for the loss after allowing seven earned runs to cross the plate in 3.2 innings pitched.

 

The Brewers will take the road for three games at Grand Junction followed by four at Orem.

Brewers snap scoreless streak, fall to Voyagers

The Helena Brewers snapped a streak of 30 straight scoreless innings in the third frame Saturday, but couldn’t muster another run the rest of the way in an 11-3 loss to Great Falls.

 

Helena had nine hits but batted just 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

 

Brewers catcher Paul Eshleman singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to give the hosts their first run since Tuesday’s eighth inning. Chris McFarland and Adam Giacalone added RBIs to tie the game at 3-all heading to the fourth.

 

That’s when the wheels came off. Brewers starting pitcher Preston Gainey was tagged with five runs in the fourth frame, and the Voyagers added three more in the seventh when third baseman Tyler Williams slammed a three-run bomb off reliever Michael Schaub.

 

Right fielder Yoandy Barroso was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in to lead the visitors’ offense. Giacalone and McFarland continued their hot hitting with two hits apiece, raising their averages to .367 and .305, respectively. Eshleman also had two hits, including the Brewers’ only double.

 

Voyagers reliever Andrew Virgili earned the win after 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.

 

The Brewers have today off before opening a seven-game road trip.

Josh Butler got the start for the Baby Brewers on his way back to AAA Nashville. He went 2 perfect innings and threw in a strikeout. The meat of the game was pitched by Austin Hall, who allowed 4 earned runs on 4 hits (including a HR by Leo Rodriguez, the mini-Dodgers' 9th hitter). Hall also struck out two and walked one. Given that he's nearly 24 years old, a 5.20 career ERA is pretty disappointing. Austin Blaski pitched a clean 7th and Eduard Reyes allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in the 8th and the 9th.

 

The Brewers managed to get some nice offensive performances. Bonus baby Jose Pena lead the way with a triple and a tater in five trips to the plate. Jose Sermo also chipped in a dinger. For those of you following some of the Brewers' highly ranked draft picks, Clint Coulter went 1-5 and Edgardo Rivera went 2-5 with an RBI. The Brewers' 11th round pick this year, Preston Gainey got the start for the Toddler Brewers and immediately put the H-Crew behind the 8 ball. Great Falls scored 1 run in each of the first 3 innings and 5 in the fourth before the Brewers pulled Gainey. His final line: 3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R (7 ER), 2 BB, 4 K. Michael Schaub was next in line, and he surrendered an additional 3 runs over the next 2.1 IP, including a HR. While the game was basically over at this point, you have to give credit to the team of Joel Pierce, Michael Francisco, and Elliott Glynn, who combined to throw 3 one hit innings with 3 Ks to close the game out.

 

The Toddler Brewers finally broke their scoreless streak, tacking up 3 runs in the 3rd, but the Voyagers buried them in the top of the 4th with a 5-spot. Chris McFarland continues to just hit like a crazy person. He went 2 for 5, scored a run, batted in another, and managed to steal a base for the second straight game. Adam Giacalone did his job too - he went 2-4 and batted in a run. He's batting an outrageous .367 on the year and looks to be set to start next year in full season ball. Michael Reed went 1-3 with a walk, and Kevin Eshleman had 2 hits (1 double) to round out some of the offensive contributors. Hopefully the offense can get rolling, in particular the bottom of the order needs to get it going - the 5th through 9th hitters from last night are hitting .223, .244, .210, .163, and .145 on the year.
