Brewers call up Segura 8/6 (he started that night); Izturis to Washington on waivers

Since I believe they had him penciled in to be the everyday starting SS in 2012 I don't really have a problem with this. Get the learning out of the way in a season that's already toast.

I hope he performs well enough that they buy out his FA through his age 31 season and tack on 2 option years to the back end of the contract. I of course I would also hope this happens before 2015 and not as he's hitting arbitration or approaching his FA.

Have fun Jean!

Melvin always dominates when trading with Washington. Spivey for Ohka, Dyksrta for Morgan, Komastu for Hairston, Izturis for nothing. You'd think the Nats would just hang up at this point.

HA!

I am excited for tonights game. Go Jean!!

In order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Cesar Izturis, the Nationals DFA'd a dude named Atahualpa Severino.

CLAIM HIM, DOUG.

I thought that was funny.

I thought that was even funnier. Well done to both.

My sister and brother in law are at MP tonight as guests of Larry Hisle's so they got to go in early for BP and they said Segura showed some serious pop. So excited for this kid! Tear it up Jean!!

Segura playing with the big boys tonight and Hellweg going again tonight in AA. The Greinke trade sure made the end of the year more interesting

My preference would have been to leave him down till June of next year and see what Bianchi could do for the rest of the year but as long as we can buy out his first year of FA, not a bad idea. He's only 22. Looking forward to see what the kid can do though.

I really do get the service time argument, but it's pretty obvious to see what the Brewers are trying to do here. They want to see what he can do for two months to see if he's an everyday option in 2013. There's definitely something to be said for that too, because if he's ready that takes away a big offseason need. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do for the rest of this season.

I am sure they could have found a SS for half the season. My concern is more that they are taking a short term win now approach as opposed to long term team building.

if he was 20, i might agree...but at 22, were going to have him until he's 30 anyway, so we will have him through his prime. Since I'm not expecting him to be a superstar, i'd think by the time he is 30, we'll be ready to move on, or have someone cheaper in the wings...

For star type players, the extra years makes sense, but for good, not great players, i don't think it matters that much...

There wasn't any reason to have kept him in the minors until June 2013, unless you already give up on the 2013 season, which there is no reason to do. The Brewers can compete next year, so why would the play some horrendous free agent like Cesar Izturis for 1-2 months when the best SS in the system was healthy?

Not that Segura alone is that huge of a difference maker, but keeping him in the minors basically concedes the 2013 season just so you can get another year of team control way down the line.

There is currently one SS in the Majors with an OPS above .800. I think if Jean Genie can handle the position, he could end up with multiple all-star appearances by bettering that number. Looking at his minors stats, and considering his age, I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation, but I'm sure some may disagree.

Yes. While an .800 OPS wouldn't make him a "superstar," (and would most likely still put him behind Tulo and Reyes), it would still make him one of the top 5 SS in baseball.

Do others expect him to stay at SS and hit as I expect? (after a year or two, not right away)
