Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Seidel has a night of firsts

R.J. Seidel didn’t worry about the big picture when he entered the Huntsville Stars’ Southern League baseball game against Chattanooga (Tenn.) on Thursday night.

 

The Stars had a two-run lead, but the Central High School graduate’s focus was squarely on the specific situation. Seidel, a right-handed pitcher, was being summoned to retire a pretty good right-handed hitter who was stepping to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

 

A curveball down in the zone led C.J. Retheford — Chattanooga’s No. 5 batter — to hit a soft fly ball to the shortstop and end the scoring threat. Seidel then pitched a hitless sixth inning before yielding to another reliever, who yielded to another in the ninth.

 

When the final out was recorded, Seidel could celebrate not only a 3-1 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Class AA team, but also his first win of the summer and a new milestone in his pitching career, which now includes participation in a no-hitter.

 

“I’d never been part of (pitching) a no-hitter, either myself or with a group of pitchers,” the 6-foot-5 Seidel said.

 

“It’s a cool experience because of that and because it’s been three or four years since there’s been one in Huntsville.”

 

Seidel, 24, is in his second season with Huntsville and has contributed mainly as a reliever this summer. The Stars needed help from four relievers to record Thursday’s no-hitter, which was started by Jimmy Nelson, who struck out four and walked four.

 

Seidel (1-2), the Tribune’s player of the year in 2006, walked two and threw a wild pitch, but lowered his ERA to 4.59 in 49 innings. He has 34 strikeouts and one save with 25 of his 29 appearances coming in relief and a 4.17 ERA as a reliever.

 

He said the transition to pitching as a middle reliever and receiving spot starts has been a smooth one.

 

“It’s definitely a different mentality,” said Seidel, who calls Arizona home in the offseason. “You have to come in focused right away on what you have to do, and you don’t have that four of five days to build it up.

 

“I seem to be more relaxed when I pitch, and I don’t have to deal with the hype that comes with starting a game. I like coming out of the (bull)pen.”

 

And with pitchers like Johnny Hellweg and Ariel Pena — both acquired in the Zack Greinke trade — also playing for the Stars, finding a way to stand out becomes more important.

 

“They are really talented guys, and (shortstop Jean Segura) is one of the best shortstops I’ve ever seen,” Seidel said. “It gives you a fire and makes you work harder when you get out there.

 

“It gives you incentive to keep working hard at what you’re doing.”

'Tees score late to top Yanks

TAMPA, Fla. - Brent Dean's one-out RBI single in the top of the ninth broke a 1-1 tie as the Brevard County Manatees edged the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

 

Manatees starting pitcher Drew Gagnon (0-1, 3.27) did not factor into the decision as he threw six quality innings and allowed just one run that came on a solo homer by Austin Romine to lead off the top of the fourth that tied the game. Gagnon scattered six hits and walked one, while fanning five.

 

Brevard County (23-20 second half, 52-59 overall) got on the board first in the second inning and it started with Cody Hawn drawing a one-out walk. Dean then singled to left to put two on and then John Dishon reached on a force out that retired Dean and put runners on the corners with one out. Hawn would then score on a fielder's choice from Franklin Romero Jr. to give the 'Tees a 1-0 lead.

 

After Gagnon left the game, Alan Williams came in and held Tampa (26-17, 56-54) scoreless for the seventh and eighth as he struck out four hitters.

 

With the game tied 1-1 going into the ninth, Mike Walker would lead off the inning with a double to left and then Shea Vucinich singled to right to put runners on the corners with no outs. After Cody Hawn flew out to right, Dean picked up his second single of the day, one that would score Walker and give Brevard County a 2-1 lead.

 

Casey Medlen entered the game in the ninth and pitched around a two-out error by Walker to earn his 18th save of the season. Along with Dean, Nick Shaw had two hits for the 'Tees, who are now three games back of first place Tampa.

 

The rubber game of Brevard's three-game set with the Yanks will be on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. as the Manatees try to gain more ground in the standings on Tampa.

 

Nick Bucci will toe the rubber for the 'Tees in Sunday's series finale. Bucci is currently recovering from an injury and has made just four starts this season, all in the Arizona League. Last season, Bucci was a mid-season All-Star with Brevard County as he went 8-11 with a 3.84 ERA with the Manatees in 2011.

 

The Yankees will send Shane Greene (4-2, 4.00) to the mound. Greene is 3-0 in eight appearances thus far in the second half of the season.

Big win for the playoff hopeful Manatees. The game story above is pretty comprehensive, but I'll just add that Drew Gagnon continues to open eyes. He literally made only one mistake, a homer to well thought of Austin Romine. Having seen Gagnon pitch in person and on TV a few times this season, I can agree that the stuff matches the numbers. Drew has a solid 2-pitch repertoire behind his above average FB. Everything starts with the FB though as it has plus movement and tilt while siting 89-93.

 

Big power lefty Alan Williams K'ed 4 over 2 scoreless relief innings and steady Casey Medlen saved it.

Nice mound work tonight from Gagnon, Pena, and Miller. When I looked at the Huntsville box score, I caught myself feeling a little disappointed to see that in four PAs, all Segura did was hit two singles.

Wisconsin holds off Beloit for narrow victory

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored two runs in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers Saturday night at Pohlman Field. Matt Miller allowed one run in six innings for his tenth win of the season. Three relievers combined to work the final three innings to preserve the win.

 

The Timber Rattlers (65-45 overall, 21-20 second half) jumped on Beloit starting pitcher Jason Wheeler right away. Brandon Macias singled to start the game and Carlos George bunted for a hit. Greg Hopkins, the third hitter of the game, singled to right to drive in Macias and get George to third base. Nick Ramirez grounded into a double play that allowed George to score the second run of the inning.

 

Wheeler would strike out ten and allow three more hits over eight innings, but he was never in a position to pick up his thirteenth win of the year.

 

Beloit (58-53, 19-22) got a run back in the bottom of the second inning. Kennys Vargas hit a solo homer with one out to make the score 2-1.

 

Miller walked the tightrope for the rest of his six innings of work. He pitched around a leadoff double and a pair of walks in the third inning. In the fourth, Beloit put two runners on base with one out on a walk and a single. Both were left stranded. In the sixth inning, Miguel Sano doubled with one out. Miller retired the next two batters on a fly ball and a grounder to maintain the 2-1 lead.

 

Stephen Peterson relieved Miller to start the seventh inning and walked the first batter he faced. The next batter dropped a sacrifice bunt and Peterson got the out at first, but was injured on the play and had to leave the game.

 

Michael Strong would throw a wild pitch to move the tying run to third base, but got a strikeout and a liner to second to end the seventh.

 

Strong came back out to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning and got the first out. A single by Eddie Rosario put the tying run on first base and with the right-handed Sano and switch-hitting Vargas due up, the Rattlers went to right-handed reliever Stosh Wawrzasek.

 

Wawrzasek struck out Sano, who leads the Midwest League in homers with 21 and RBI with 83, for the second out of the inning. Wawrzasek struck out Vargas to end the eighth and strand the tying run at first.

 

Wawrzasek worked a perfect ninth inning - with a pair of strikeouts - to close out the Snappers and earn his second save of the season.

 

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Chad Pierce (5-3, 3.35) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. David Hurlbut (4-5, 2.78) is set to start for the Snappers. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Not much offense for the Rattlers again tonight, but their pitchers were just a little bit better than Beloit's and they squeaked out a 2-1 win. Matt Miller with his fourth straight excellent start to get his 10th win of the season. He went 6 innings, and gave up just one run. The bullpen was equally as dominant, allowing just one hit in three innings. Stephen Peterson worked 1/3 of an inning. Chris noted in his recap that Peterson left with an injury, hopefully it was something minor. Michael Strong tossed one scoreless and Stosh Wawrzasek pitched a perfect 1 2/3 innings to earn the save. Stosh was dominant, striking out four of the five batters he faced.

 

Carlos George had a 2-4 night and made his second straight start in center field. Rafael Neda was 1-3. He's batting almost .300 since the All-Star break. Brandon Macias, Greg Hopkins and Nick Ramirez each went 1-4 for the T-Rats other three hits. Ben McMahan walked once but was thrown out trying to steal.

Pena with a terrific second start. The new additions have not disappointed in their brief time with Huntsville.

What an implosion.

 

Except for a 2010 that wasn't as impressive as the raw numbers appeared, Kyle Heckathorn (career stats) has proven to be a pretty disappointing supplemental first round pick.

 

Just because his decline was more gradual, he escaped a lot of the Eric Arnett-like fan groans.

 

Arnett remains the more viable prospect, as fringy as that may be.
