Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

HUNTER MORRIS NAMED TOPPS SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JULY

First Baseman Earns Consecutive Monthly Honors

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – What’s the best way to follow up a Player of the Month award? Win another one! Huntsville Stars first baseman Hunter Morris has won his second consecutive Topps Southern League Player of the Month Award.

 

Morris’ hot streak continues with greater numbers than the month before. He averaged .340 in 28 games in July with 36 hits. Twenty of those were extra-base hits with eight doubles and 10 home runs. Morris also had 25 RBIs to round out a huge month for the hometown hero. His 20 extra-base hits and 10 homers were tied for third most in Minor League Baseball for the month.

 

These numbers boosted “The Mayor” to lead the Southern League in four categories: extra base hits (60), total bases (229), slugging percentage (.563) and doubles (36). He is also ranked fifth in hits with 125 and second in RBIs with 83. Morris is hitting a combined .307 on the season, the second-best average in the league. His 36 doubles are tied for fourth most in MiLB and his 20 home runs are good for fourth best at the Double-A level. He also ranks third in total RBIs amongst all Double-A players. The former Auburn standout also boasts the fourth best at-bat to home run ratio in the league with one long ball per 20.35 at-bats.

 

This award comes to Morris after a season full of accolades. He was named the Southern League Player of the Week in July and represented the Stars as a Southern League All-Star. This is his second Topps Southern League Player of the Month honor for this season alone (June). He was also named the Brewers Minor League Hitter of the Month for April and June.

Cody Hawn hit his team leading 10th home run on the season. Cody's slugging percentage is .376, 5th on the team. Cody's name should be squarely on the bounce-back list for next year. A 6th rounder in 2010, Cody came into the system with a very similar pedigree as Hunter Morris. In 2009, Cody hit .364 with 22 homers on his way to the Tennessee team triple crown. Even after the 2010 season, when Cody destroyed the Pioneer league, there were people who like Cody's future more than Hunter's. Another strong season in WI in 2011 kept most hopeful but the blatant loss of game power was discouraging. Some of that is back this year, but the approach has disintegrated. Maybe the Southern League will treat him better.

 

Jason Rogers went 2-4 with a 2B and Franklin Romero went 2-3 with an OF assist, but he was CS once.

 

Jed Bradley got the start. After that (the 1st pitch that is), things went south. So internet coaches; What would you do with Bradley? Shut him down? Make him pitch through it? Demote him? Paging Dr. James Andrews? Cripes. Seth Harvey and Greg Holle kept it reasonable with 4 scoreless to end the game.

 

SS Nick Shaw committed his 16th error at SS and Johnny Dishon joined Romero Jr. at the gun show.

So, let me start by stating that Rookie Ball stats are about as useful as a gasoline soaked fire blanket. That said, it is better to have good stats, no? Well, Clint Coulter and Jose Pena have great season lines right now. Both homered in this one as they joined game ball winner Jose Sermo in an offensive onslaught. Speed demon leadoff hitter Edgardo Rivera went 3-5 and lanky SS Angel Ortega went 2-4. Both young Puerto Ricans are 18 years old and both can be very good if coached up properly.

 

Anthony Banda started and benefited from the pile of runs supplied by the hitters. Austin Blaski, who has been solid, continued his success with 2 decent innings.

Bees earn a split with a 1-0 shutout

GRAND CHUTE, WI - A four game battle between possible Midwest League playoff opponents ended in a stalemate. The Burlington Bees defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 1-0 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Sean Jamieson had three hits - including a solo homer in the fifth inning - for Burlington. Both teams wound up with two wins in the four game series.

 

Burlington (54-55 overall, 21-19 second half) scored the only run of the game on a solo homer by in the fifth inning. Jamieson hit a home run to left field with one out off Jacob Barnes for a 1-0 lead.

 

Barnes pitched seven innings, would allow four hits, and match his single game high for strikeouts as a professional with nine. But, he would be tagged with the loss.

 

Wisconsin (64-45, 20-20) had two good chances to score. Carlos George started the bottom of the fourth inning with a double, but would be caught trying to steal third. Brandon Macias drew a walk, but was left at first base.

 

In the eighth inning, Yadiel Rivera tripled to the right field corner to start the inning against reliever Raul Alcantara. Left-handed reliever Chas Mye came on to face left-handed pinch hitter Nick Ramirez and got the strikeout. Burlington went to closer Jonathan Joseph to get right-handed hitters Lance Roenicke on a pop out Carlos George on a strikeout.

 

Joseph came back out to work a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his eleventh save of the season.

 

If the season had ended after Friday's game, Wisconsin and Burlington would play each other in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs. The Timber Rattlers won the Western Division in the first half. The Bees are currently second in the divisional standings for the second half, two games behind first place Clinton and two games in front of third place Kane County.

 

There are still thirty games left in the regular season. Plus, the teams meet in the three game series in Burlington over Labor Day weekend to end the regular season.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a four game series in Beloit on Saturday night. Matt Miller (9-7, 3.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit sends Jason Wheeler (12-4, 3.41) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Tough loss for the T-Rats after yet another very well pitched game. The offense just couldn't get anything going as they got shutout on five hits. Jacob Barnes started and pitched seven innings. He gave up just one run on four hits and struck out nine. Barnes dropped his ERA to 3.05 on the season. Mark Williams pitched the final two innings of relief, giving up just one hit. He also walked one and struck out one.

 

Carlos George had a 2-4 night with a double. He also wound up starting in center field which as far as I can tell was his first ever appearance in the outfield. The Rattlers were playing shorthanded in the outfield after Chadwin Stang was a late scratch from the lineup. Greg Hopkins went 1-3. Yadiel Rivera was 1-3 with a triple, and Adrian Williams was 1-2 before being lifted for pinch-hitter Nick Ramirez late in the game. Brandon Macias was tossed in the 9th inning, though I'm not sure why. Perhaps Chris will mention it in Nine after 9.

Well Tunnell and "others" (who I don't know maybe Ash and Nichols) spent an unplanned week in Nashville working with Peralta as I linked in an MiLB article way back in June, I would think Bradley would get the same treatment if he hasn't already. They won't be able to put out every fire, but the organization does have a vested interest in its bonus babies.

 

It's no secret I thought the placements were aggressive, but it's awfully late in the season to send him down isn't it? He has 4-5 starts left, if that.

 

If he were my athlete I'd let him finish the year, let him have some time away, and then bring him back early for some TLC and individualized coaching in January. He wouldn't have to throw off the mound, long toss is just as effective for working on mechanical stuff. I'm a big believer in a little time away doing wonders for clearing the mind, it always works for me. Also, he's got to be about burnt out mentally, I wouldn't put him through instructs, just give him time to decompress... Even if he's a grinder and wants to keep working at it I'd still give him the time away, over coaching isn't any better than under coaching, and sometimes worse, which is another lesson I learned the hard way.

 

Let him or force him to step away and then come back fresh in 2013 would be my suggestion.

Brown discusses the Sounds’ two extra-inning games so far in Fresno, his season to this point, the mental grind of the season, September call-ups and his approach at the plate. Well, the Billings Reds can stay on the east side of the state forever for all I care. Another close loss tonight that didn't really seem all that close. Chris McFarland (2-4 2B) got back on track with a big night out of the leadoff spot. Adam Giacalone (2-4), who made the tail end of the Baseball America 2012 Top 500 Draft Prospects List (at #464), is just plain feeling it. The best line belonged to Ruben Ozuna who smacked 2 2B's in 3 AB's. Ozuna has 13 H in his last 32 AB's. I would like to see Ozuna and Michael Reed (1-4 SB (9)) switch spots in the order.

 

On the mound, Ryan Gibbard started and had 2 good innings and 2 bad innings. Joel Pierce threw a mediocre inning before giving way to Damien Magnifico. Magnifico went 7 outs allowing 3 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB and 3 K. He also had 2 WP's and a balk with a 3:0 GO:FO. Do I smell another stretch-out project? With Jacob Barnes having success and Eric Arnett on track to soak up bigger innings, one has to wonder if Magnifico is next. Connor Whalen took over when Magnifico was pulled and finished unscathed.
