Brewers interested in Shoppach

Possibilities:

1) Made up by Red Sox front office or Red Sox reporter to increase trade leverage.

2) Some type of three-team trade is in the works.

3) Doug Melvin done lost his mind.

That really makes no sense. Even if they had a deal in place to trade Lucroy or Maldonado, why wouldn't they just bring up the guy they just signed to AAA (Quinteros?). It's not like they're going to win this season, so trading away anything for a vet who's going to leave at the end of the season wouldn't seem like a good idea.

I could like this is if we were trading one of the "salary dump" guys (Wolf, K-Rod, Veras, Loe or Parra), but I don't think the Red Sox are that dumb.

I am calling bull on this. Catching is not an area of need for MIL and I would highly doubt Melvin is considering trading either Lucroy or Maldonado right now. Perhaps he has been getting some calls and at least wanted to check in on replacement Catchers just in case he needed one.

Considering Cafardo is the source, I highly doubt there's anything to this "rumor". He seems to make thins up to fill column inches on a regular basis, IMO.

As others have mentioned, this only makes sense as part of another move (3-team deal). Shoppach is 32 and a FA after the season. He's only caught and DHed in his career. So a Clancy-type move is even more unlikely than normal (such a Luc to 1B, Shoppach and Maldy at C, Hart traded), since Shoppach is a rental.

Here's how I think that was written:

"Kelly Shoppach might get traded. What's a team that might need a catcher? Uh, well, the Brewers are bad this season and just traded that Kottaras guy. Yeah, the Brewers are interested. Let's go with that."

Ding ding! The whole "rumor" seems like pure speculation, and nothing more. Granted Shoppach is better, I see no reason why we would be interested when Maldonado will be just as serviceable.

Wait, there are professional sports teams in the Midwest? I thought it was just all farmland until you hit Vegas.

eeeehhhhhhhh i disagree. shoppach may be a little better of a hitter today but isnt nearly as good a defender as maldy. maldy is also like what- 6-7 years younger. martin will end up twice the catcher kelly is.

Don't forget "when you need to fill out that 15-team no-trade list"!

"Better is a relative term."

Ben Sheets is "better," than Wily Peralta right now, but I wouldn't make that trade.

Shoppach is better than Maldy and is also a very good defensive catcher, but why give up the absolute ideal back up catcher when you control him for 6 years and could probably offer him a 6 year 9 million dollar deal, he'd likely jump at it. And I think Maldy is going to continue to improve offensively and become a consistent .260/.330/.425 type hitter, and if I'm right, with his D, that's starter quality.

In fact, I'd equate him to a backup QB. He won't get much PT, and he will be able to start for a number of other teams and eventually the Brewers will trade him for something of value in 2-3 years...if he's the player I believe he is.

Though to be honest, I'd rather see Lucroy become a 3rd basemen and move him over there in 2 years when Aram is gone if he proves to be a .300/.360 hitter who can hit 12-16 HR's a year. I'd like to see him save the pounding he's going to inevitably take behind the plate. I think his bat is too good to play 120 game behind the dish, and Maldy is too good to "only," play 42 games a year. And Lucroy appears to be a good enough athlete to play elsewhere.

Kinda like Pat Boarders who played 3rd base after starting out as a catcher, or to a much lesser degree(most likely) Craig Biggio...though 2nd base appears to be just loaded.

Hmmm...Shoppack is a VERY good defensive catcher.

I Maldy is 7 years younger, but right now I don't think he's as good. But again, it's about so much more than that. 6 years vs a rental for a team that's only in a race for a top 5 pick this season.

I'd definitely rather have Shoppach than Maldonado, but I'm not much of a believer in Maldonado because of his offense. Shoppach mashes LHP's, so that's nice to have around, too. Obviously you wouldn't want to platoon Lucroy since he's terrible against RHP's, but if it's going to be a "one guy starts 95% of the games" catcher situation, I wouldn't mind a back-up that has most of their value in their ability to hit southpaws.
