Thornburg sent to Nashville, McClendon recalled

It's a good idea to send him down to let him get back into his routine and continue to develop. There wasn't a good reason to call him up and put him in the bullpen to start with.

Yes it is....RRR said they want to get him starting again.....said he will be back later in the year.

Haven't they screwed with him enough this year? Let the guy start and keep him starting. I don't even want him called up later in the year unless he is going to start. And personally I'd rather see Rogers continue to start and if we need another starter I'd rather see Peralta called up. I hate this idea that our top prospects have to be thrown into the bullpen "to get their feet wet". The team is going nowhere this year. If we are that desperate for them to get experience why not have them take Wolf's spot in the rotation for a game or two?

I like Thornburg a lot and I have been very outspoken about moving him up faster than they have been. That being said, I'd rather let him pitch in AAA the rest of the year and give him a shot to make the rotation out of spring training. There seem to be other guys ahead of him (Rogers and Peralta most notably) and having him pitch in Nashville the rest of the season isn't the end of the world. But to keep switching him from the rotation to the bullpen seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I'd like to see Donovan Hand get a chance, but it wouldn't surprise me to see them bring up Stetter so they have a lefty specialist.

edit. I should add that in general I don't have a problem calling up a top prospect and sitting them in the pen for a month (like Gallardo) if he's ready and will need his innings limited a little bit, I just don't think Thornburg is ready and his pitching schedule has been erratic for well over a month now. Nor does he need his innings limited, he's barely pitched for a month and half.

I was like who? Then I remembered there was a trade I didn't read when I got home early this morning. Could be he'll be the one.

Yes, there is an exception for trades.

•If the optioned player is being assigned to another major-league club's Active List via trade, he can be recalled to that roster before 10 days are up.

I agree with TC07 as well in that I'd like to see Donovan Hand get a chance. I'd also like to see what Jesus Sanchez can do.

Problem is those guys would need to be added to the 40-man roster, so I don't see it happening. It'll likely be someone on the 40-man roster already who gets the call. So it's likely going to be De Los Santos, McClendon, or Peralta.

I would think it's De Los Santos, so that the team can see what they've got with him. If he fails, nothing is really lost; McClendon could be brought up in that case.

Bringing up Peralta would lead to the same issue with Thornburg. (I don't anticipate the front office making the same error twice in month.) Peralta has been groomed as a starter; bullpen duty at this time would be foreign to him. And if another starter is needed in the next 3 weeks, then you're scrambling to get the starter-turned-reliever Peralta back into "starter mode".

They screwed up by bringing him up before pitching in AAA.

I hope he pitches the rest of the year in AAA, then come spring he can compete for a spot in the rotation. Fiers, Peralta, and Rodgers I get the call ups cause they've been in AAA for awhile.

I know a lot of teams skip right over AAA and bring guys up straight from AA, but that doesn't mean it's still not a good idea to let a guy play in AAA for awhile.

The difference between AA and AAA is very minimal in terms of talent level. If a player looks ready, skipping AAA really shouldn't be a big deal. Thornburg is close to ready and I have no problem him going to AAA for a while, but I don't think he was screwed up by skipping that level.

Mike Vassallo ‏@MikeVassallo13

RHP Mike McClendon has been recalled from Triple-A @nashvillesounds to take the spot of RHP Tyler Thornburg, who was optioned yesterday.

Looks like it's McClendon. Kind of disappointing. Would've rather seen De Los Santos or someone else get a chance.

I just wish they'd have done this weeks ago instead of bringing Thornburg up as a bullpen arm. Maybe this coupled with the Peralta deal earlier in the year will put an end to the "bring a promising starter up to sit in the bullpen" idea. I just hope Thornburg settles right back into a starting role at AAA.

I'd like to see them stick Estrada back in the bullpen and bring up Peralta to take his spot in the rotation. Now Peralta last started Thursday, so he'll have to wait another turn. But that makes the most sense to me. Then once Thornburg makes a start or two, I'd bring him up and send Wolf to the pen for the duration.
