Final: Wisconsin 9, Clinton 4

Rattlers hit three homers to bash Clinton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers have been hitting home runs at a torrid pace in the month of July. They had hit 23 in the first 25 games during the month. On Sunday, the Rattlers cracked three more homers to defeat the Clinton LumberKings 9-4 at Ashford University Field. Chadwin Stang, Cameron Garfield, and Nick Ramirez all went deep for Wisconsin to help the Rattlers snap Clinton's six-game winning streak.

Stang wasted no time in extending his hitting streak to 13 games and in giving the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin's centerfielder blasted the second pitch of the game over the wall in left-center for a solo home run.

Wisconsin (61-43 overall, 17-18 second half) pushed their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second inning. Ramirez doubled to start the frame and Ben McMahan drove him in with a triple. Mike Garza followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Max Walla drew a bases loaded walk with one out to force in a run for a 4-0 lead. Wisconsin would leave the bases loaded in the inning.

Clinton (44-59, 21-14) got a run off Wisconsin starting pitcher Jacob Barnes in the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifice fly by Toby Demello got a run home.

The LumberKings pulled to within a run on two-run single by James Zamarippa in the bottom of the fourth. Clinton loaded the bases with one out, but Barnes got out of the inning with an inning ending 4-6-3 double play.

Garfield made it 5-3 with a homer to start the Rattlers fifth. But, Clinton came back with a two-out RBI single by Patrick Brady in the bottom of the fifth.

That 5-4 lead held through the sixth inning. Then, Ramirez padded the advantage with one swing of the bat. Left-handed Clinton reliever Jeremy Dobbs walked Garfield with one out. Greg Hopkins reached on a fielder's choice after an errant throw to second on an attempt to force Garfield. That play left runners at first and second for Ramirez.

Dobbs fell behind Ramirez 3-0 and grooved the next pitch thinking that Ramirez would be taking. The Rattlers first baseman was not taking. The lefty hit a titanic line drive home run way over the 401' marker in right-center field. The 3-run homer gave the Ramirez his twelfth home run of the season and the Rattlers an 8-4 lead.

Ramirez tacked on one more RBI with a two-out double. His four RBI in the game gave Ramirez 52 runs batted in for the season and put him in the team lead in that category.

Barnes worked five innings and picked up the win. Stosh Wawrzasek pitched four innings of scoreless relief and earned his first save of the season.

Game three of the series in Clinton is Monday night. Matt Miller (8-7, 3.98) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The LumberKings have Seon-Gi Kim (2-2, 3.76) set to take the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Wisconsin Box Score

The T-Rats pounded out 11 hits against LumberKings pitching, highlighted by a 3-5 day from Nick Ramirez. All three of his hits were for extra bases (two doubles and home run #12), he also knocked in 4 of Wisconsin's runs. Ramirez is hitting .303 in day games this season. Chadwin Stang went 2-4 with a walk and his 5th home run. Cameron Garfield belted his 6th of the season. Michael Garza had a 2-4 day at the plate and is hitting .300 in his last 10. Who would have guessed your team leader in triples would be Ben McMahan? He got his 7th of the season today (tied with Stang).

Jacob Barnes got his 4th win of the year, going five innings and allowing four runs. He did give up nine hits, but limited the damage. Stosh Wawrzasek relieved him and had another fantastic outing. He worked the final four innings to get his first save. Stosh only gave up three hits and did not allow a run. That's four straight scoreless outings for him, spanning 12 innings of work. The Rattlers once again played another clean defensive game, not committing any errors.

Well Bradley didn't exactly give me the good start I was hoping for. Thank goodness we aren't necessarily relying on him; plenty of other SP prospects if he doesn't figure it out.

Segura with a nice debut and Burgos continues to impress. The system is very interesting to watch right now

@Fort Myers 11, Brevard County 3

'Tees crushed by Miracle in series finale

Bradley drops ninth decision in 11-3 loss

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were throttled 11-3 by the Fort Myers Miracle on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium to close out a four-game series between the two teams.

The struggles continued for Brevard starting pitcher Jed Bradley (5-9, 5.23) as he went just 4.2 innings and allowed six earned runs on ten hits, while walking three and striking out two. The southpaw is now 1-5 with a 9.97 ERA in eight road starts and is 0-3 with a 6.67 ERA in five July starts.

The Manatees (20-17 second half, 49-56 overall) did get on the board first in the second inning as Shea Vucinich and Joey Paciorek led off the inning with back-to-back singles and two batters later Vucinich would score on a RBI single from John Dishon.

Fort Myers (19-19, 47-58) took the lead in the bottom of the inning and it all started with two outs in the frame. Andy Leer singled and then Angel Morales walked to put two on. Back-to-back RBI singles from Levi Michael and Steven Liddle would put the Miracle on the board and give them a 2-1 lead.

The Miracle would do more damage against Bradley and the 'Tees with two outs in the fourth inning as Josmil Pinto hit a two-run homer to make it a 4-1 game.

Bradley would get two outs in the fifth and walk two batters before being lifted for Thomas Keeling. Keeling walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and then Levi Michael singled to give the Miracle a 5-1 lead. Michael Gonzales would then break the game wide open as he hit a grand slam to right to make it a 9-1 game. It was the fourth grand slam that Brevard County has allowed this season.

A RBI single by Reggie Keen and a RBI double by Mike Walker in the seventh would cut it to a 9-3 Miracle lead, but Fort Myers scored two runs off of Alan Williams in the eighth to make it an 11-3 game.

Keen led the way at the plate for the 'Tees as he went 3-for-5 and stole two bases to raise his total to 36 for the season.

Brevard County will return home to Space Coast Stadium to open up a four-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday at 6:35 p.m. Brevard and Jupiter split its four-game series at Roger Dean Stadium back in early June.

Brevard County Box

Dishon finished 2-4 with a SB out of the 9-hole. Keen was also picked off once, in addition to his otherwise fine performance. Walker went 1-4 with the 2B & a BB. Vucinich was 1-4. Paciorek and Jason Rogers each went 1-3 with a single & BB.

Seth Harvey pitched two perfect innings in relief of Keeling with 4 Ks; he was just outstanding today. I remember consistently being impressed with his performances while covering Helena in the L.R. last summer, and I'd love to see any kind of scouting report on his repertoire.

Final Game 1: Albuquerque 4, Nashville 2 (8 Innings)

'Topes Clip Sounds In Extras In Twinbill Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jerry Sands ripped an opposite-field two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to power the Albuquerque Isotopes to a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

It marked the tenth extra-inning contest of the year for the Sounds, who fell to 4-6 in extra frames.

In the top of the eighth, the visitors loaded the bases against a pair of Nashville relievers. Mitch Stetter (0-1) hit consecutive batters to start the inning and was relieved by Jesus Sanchez. After Alex Castellanos popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt, Scott Van Slyke drew a walk from Sanchez to load the bags for Sands, who ripped his go-ahead two-bagger over the head of right fielder Jordan Brown.

Nashville didn't go down without a fight in the home half of the eighth against Isotopes closer Josh Wall.

The Sounds returned the favor from the top of the inning, loading the bases using a throwing error by the pitcher followed by a pair of walks. Jordan Brown followed with a flare to shallow center, which was gloved on an outstanding sliding play by Albuquerque shortstop Elian Herrera with his back to the infield. Wall recovered to strike out Juan Sanchez and Corey Patterson in succession to quell the threat and notch his league-leading 19th save of the year.

Erick Threets (5-2) was the beneficiary of Sands' heroics, picking up the win after working one scoreless frame for Albuquerque.

Newly-added catcher Humberto Quintero enjoyed a solid Sounds debut, going 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs to pace the Nashville offense. Brown continued his hot hitting for Nashville, extending his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-4 effort.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision despite a pair of outstanding efforts.

Nashville starter Hiram Burgos -- who entered the game as the minor league ERA leader -- made his Triple-A debut and tossed a quality start, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. The right-hander, who took a no-decision, walked one batter and struck out five during his 89-pitch effort.

Albuquerque left-hander Derrick Loop matched Burgos' quality-start effort with one of his own, holding the Sounds to two runs on eight hits over six frames. He also took a no-decision.

Burgos got off to a rough start for Nashville, as he was touched for a pair of first-inning runs courtesy of a two-run Scott Van Slyke homer to left-center, the slugger's 12th longball of the year.

The Sounds got a run back in the second when Quintero lined a two-out RBI single to right off Loop in his first Nashville at-bat. Andy Gonzalez, who drew an inning-opening walk, scored on the knock to make it a 2-1 game.

Former Sound Trent Oeltjen attempted to add to the visitors lead with overzealous baserunning in the top of the fifth. The outfielder drilled a two-out triple off the center field wall then ran through 'Topes skipper Lorenzo Bundy's stop sign as he rounded third and was thrown out at the plate on a strong relay from Brown to Jeff Bianchi to Quintero.

Quintero struck again for the Sounds in the home half of the fifth when he led off the frame with his first homer of the year, a game-tying solo shot to left off Loop.

Nashville Game 1 Box Score

I've been following the minor leagues and prospects since 2003 and I don't ever recall a player making as meteoric a rise as Hiram Burgos has. Someone with greater resources may be able to answer this but I don't ever remember any pitcher outside of a team's top 30 ever being the minor league leader in ERA this late into a season? Hopefully he continues to pitch well through the next month and earns a September call-up. We've discussed Hiram at length but I'll say that I had personally dismissed him after his K/9 dropped to 6 last year, that was the one rate stat which had me really intrigued through 2010.

Final: DSL Braves 6, DSL Brewers 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

This team has been quite a bit like the big club in the second half, the bullpen just hasn't been very good at all. Pedro Peguero made his 2nd appearance and first start going just the 1 inning, but it was a clean inning and lowered his ERA 60 points to 20.25 on the season. Milton Gomez was very good pitching the next 5 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 4. Joan De La Cruz was pounded in his .1 allowing 4 runs on 3 hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. Victor Diaz would have gotten out of the 7th without allowing an inherited runner to score but he too uncorked a wild pitch which gifted a run to the young Braves. Felix Paulino gave up an unearned run in the 9th.

Alejandro Mendoza (2-4, SB), Jose Dicent (0-2,2BB,SB), Yunior Santana(2-4) and Juan De Leon (1-4,HR) were the key players offensively in this game. Gomez and Dicent each a fielding error.

In case you've been wondering I'm unable to spell "cerveceritos" correctly without cutting and pasting it which is why I don't use it. In fact is that even correct? I suppose I could just drop a txt file on my desktop with it... However I can at least spell Lucroy correctly, it amazes me when we fans can read a MLB player's name for years and still not spell it correctly.

Stars' Khris Davis stays hot in team's latest win

By Bill Bryant, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Khris Davis grounded into a routine 5-4-3 double play in his last at-bat for the Huntsville Stars today.

But it's what he did before his fourth appearance at the plate that went a long way toward giving them a 3-1 victory over Chattanooga at Joe Davis Stadium.

And, combined with what he did on the Stars' recent road trip, it's what earned him a spot in Triple-A Nashville, starting Monday.

Davis went 3-for-4 in what may very well have been his last Double-A game, raising his average to .383, and he also drove in a pair of runs for Huntsville (17-19). The outfielder had hit safely in six straight at-bats before his ground ball in the eighth inning, and, prior to Saturday night, had homered in five straight games.

That will get you noticed by the front office.

"His numbers speak for themselves," Stars manager Darnell Coles said.

They spoke volumes against first-place Chattanooga (21-15), which held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. That's when newcomer Jean Segura, a shortstop with, as Coles put it, "talent that's off the charts," started things with a double off of the wall in center field.

The shortstop, one of three prospects acquired by the Brewers from the Angels in exchange for pitcher Zack Greinke, was soon sent home by a Davis single.

In the sixth inning, Segura and Davis were at it again, this time with the former singling and stealing, and the latter sending him across the plate with a double.

"I'm in one of those situations where I'm in the zone, and everything's slowed down," Davis said. "You enjoy it while it lasts and try to keep it going as long as you can, because you know it won't go on forever. It's a beautiful thing."

Hunter Morris followed Davis' hit with another double off of the wall to give the Stars an insurance run.

That proved to be more than enough for four Huntsville pitchers to handle. Dan Meadows started and went three innings before being relieved by Dan Merklinger, whose three-plus innings came and went without incident.

Merklinger allowed just two hits, no runs and struck out three to improve to 4-7 on the season.

"No question, it was (one of his best outings)," Coles said. "Merk came right at them. He had an exceptional breaking ball, and he had quick innings."

Indeed, the game was completed in a tidy 2:14.

"That's been our recipe for winning all year," Coles said. "We need good pitching in the middle."

The tail end wasn't too shabby either, with reliever Darren Byrd striking out three of the four hitters he faced, and Brandon Kintzler wrapping things up with a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

After the game, Davis went directly to Coles' office and got the news about Nashville.

"He's done an exceptional job after coming back from his calf injury (in June)," Coles said. "He came back prepared to play. He worked hard on his defense, his base running, all of it. Hitting-wise, (coach Dwayne) Hosey took care of that.

"That's what we're here for ... to develop these guys to move on to Triple-A, or hopefully, to the big leagues. I couldn't be happier for him."

With Nelson getting reactivated the turn around from Peralta, Arnett, and Rogers plus the new guys there is a lot to like about the pitching depth. It could end up being a challenge to get them all fair shots as they move up.

Huntsville Times Mark McCarter on the importance of the ten-game homestand with Chattanooga and Pensacola, particularly the current series --

Not to place too much emphasis on it, but the season is on the line for the Stars the next five days. They're chasing Chattanooga in the Southern League North for a playoff spot (Jackson won the first half and has already clinched one berth). Huntsville can't afford to let the Lookouts create even more space between the two.

This will be the last head-to-head meeting between the Stars and Lookouts, despite being in the same division. In another of the obvious flaws in the league schedule, Huntsville plays 20 of its final 30 games against teams from the opposite division, limiting opportunity to make up ground head-to-head.

STARS TAKE SERIES OPENER AGAINST LOOKOUTS

Huntsville Stars

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – To open up a five-game series and a ten-game homestand at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars beat the Chattanooga Lookouts by a score of 3-1 on Sunday night.

Taking the early lead, Chattanooga scored their only run of the ballgame in the second inning. Right fielder Blake Davis started the rally with a one-out double off of Stars starting pitcher Dan Meadows. The next at-bat, Davis was plated by another double from catcher Griff Erickson to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead.

Fortunately for the Stars, they began their spurt of three unanswered runs to end the game in the fourth inning. To begin the inning, newly acquired shortstop Jean Segura doubled off Chattanooga starter Matt Magill. Segura then scored on a RBI single by left fielder Khris Davis to tie up the game at one.

In the sixth inning, Segura and Davis struck again. The shortstop singled to lead off the frame. After stealing second, Segura was plated on a RBI double by Davis to give the Stars the lead. The next at-bat, first baseman Hunter Morris drove in Davis with an RBI double of his own to put the Stars up 3-1.

That lead was plenty for the Stars pitching staff on this night. After relieving Meadows in the fourth, LHP Dan Merklinger improved to 4-7 on the year in tossing a scoreless 3.2 innings. Reliever Darren Byrd added 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball and RHP Brandon Kintzler threw a hitless ninth for his sixth save on the season.

On offense, Segura took center stage. In his Huntsville Stars and Brewers organization debut, the highly-touted shortstop went 2-for-4 with a single, double, stolen base and scored two runs.

Aside from Segura, Khris Davis increased his hitting streak to 13 games with a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Also, with his sixth inning double, Morris now leads the Southern League in two-baggers with 33.

Game two of a five-game series with the Lookouts will take place on Monday. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

I coach high school baseball in North Carolina (we won the state title this past year) and our catcher got a scholarship to Catawba, where Sands went to school, so I follow him and think he could be a stud eventually.....

@Huntsville 3, Chattanooga 1

Huntsville Box

Back-to-back doubles in the top of the 2nd resulted in a run for the Lookouts, but after that, the four Huntsville pitchers combined to shut out Chattanooga en route to the win. Starter Dan Meadows got good results, making his second straight start on three days' rest: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2:4 GO:AO.

As I mentioned earlier in today's L.R., Dan Merklinger came on in relief of Meadows and tossed a strong 3.2 IP. However, he went K--single--K--HBP in the 7th inning, and when he was pulled, not only was his shutout stat line in jeopardy -- the game was up in the air as well.

Darren Byrd came on and got a backwards K to end the top half of the 7th against Lookouts SS Luis Nunez, who obviously disagreed with the call, as he was ejected for arguing. Byrd worked an unconventional 1-2-3 inning in the 8th: he struck out the leadoff batter, but the batter reached 1B on a throwing error by catcher Adam Weisenburger on his attempt to secure the K at 1B. Byrd then got a called strike three for out #1, followed by a groundball double play. Brandon Kintzler tossed a perfect 9th for the save; Kintzler has a filthy 1.45 ERA in 16 second-half appearances (18.2 IP).

Apparently the new SS in town didn't feel much like waiting around to make an impact -- as noted already by BrewersST920, in the 4th, Jean Segura blasted a double off the CF wall in his second plate appearance as Brewers property. Khris "Khrush" Davis singled back up the middle to drive him home and tie the game at 1-1. Then, in the 6th, Segura singled back up the middle to lead off the frame. He promptly stole second base during the next PA, and the Stars got back-to-back doubles of their own -- one from "Khrush", one from Hunter Morris -- and scored two runs in the inning.

Khris Davis added another single to his tally, and finished 3-4 with two RBI... and extended his hitting streak to 13 games! Red-hot... white-hot... pick your flame color, and tack "-hot" on the end -- that's what he is right now. Morris finished 1-4 with one RBI, and pushed his Southern League-leading 2B tally to 33. Segura went 2-4 with one SB, his 34th of the campaign (34/47, 72%).

Scooter Gennett was 1-4. The catcher Weisenburger was the only other Star with a hit; he went 1-3, and threw out 1 of 2 attempted basestealers. Josh Prince went 0-3, but drew a BB in the 7th, and subsequently stole 2B with Segura at the plate; Prince added one more to his organizational leading tally, 38, and is still (barely) holding off BC's Reggie Keen (36, with two swipes today). Kentrail Davis and T.J. Mittelstaedt both finished 0-3.

Final: Helena 3, Billings 5

Helena Box Score

The H-Crew banged out 11 hits this afternoon but could only manage to turn those hits in to three runs. The Brewers jumped out to a lead in the third inning when Ruben Ozuna scored on an RBI groudout by Michael Reed. The lead didn't last long as Billings responded with two in their half of the inning. Helena tied it back up in the fifth on an infield single by Kevin Berard and then took the lead in the seventh when Raul Mondesi Jr scored on a base hit by Reed. But Billings again responded with three in the bottom of the seventh.

Catcher Michael Turay was 2-4 with a double and scored two runs. As Mass Hass pointed out to me, Adam Giacalone continued his hot hitting in July. He went 2-3 with a walk. Giacalone has an 8 game hitting streak now and is batting .402 in the month of July. Helena's outfield accounted for five of the Brewers 11 hits. Ruben Ozuna and Raul Mondesi Jr. each had 2-4 days and Michael Reed added a single and a walk. Kevin Berard has had a rough start to the season, but went 2-4 for the second straight game.

Ryan Gibbard got his third start of the year and went six innings. He allowed just two runs on four hits. Damien Magnifico gave up three runs, two earned in two innings of relief. A throwing error by Turay on a bunt opened the door for the big 3 run seventh inning from Billings. Raul Mondesi also committed his fifth error of the season.
