2012 Summer Olympics Thread

NBC had just acquired USA networks in 2004 so they may have been showing off the new channels and trying to drive viewership not to mention the limited internet speeds and streaming capabilities in 2004 and even in 2008. TNT is part of Time Warner and wouldn't have had Olympic coverage.

Aren't all events streamed on the internet now in addition to using MSNBC,Bravo, CNBC, NBC Universal Sports, NBC plus the special dedicated channels for soccer, basketball?

I think it is kinda funny how I keep reading (granted this is a lot of stock research of people trying to predict the future) that everyone is dropping pay TV so they can just watch streaming on the computer but then see all the complaints that the 6 hour time difference Olympics are tape delayed and there should be more coverage when it is all there streaming all day but apparently no one wants to watch it that way.

Great, so it streams during the day when I'm at work and can't stream video. I come home and want to watch what happened. Not just what the Americans did in a handful of sports. Even when I'm home, I'd rather watch the events on my 50" TV than my 15" laptop. And if you're going to have a channel dedicated to soccer, don't show soccer on a different channel. At least swap the two so those that don't want to watch soccer can watch something.

I thought "The Who" was supposed to be in the closing ceremonies. Was that just a rumor? Did they cancel? Or...did I just miss them somehow?

They were on after the news.

You have to be kidding? Really? So they feel it necessary to preview their new comedy and have the local news before showing the ending of the ceremony at what?...11pm on a Sunday night? Nice work NBC.

Thank goodness the 2016 Olympics are in a close timezone. I believe RIO is in the Central Time Zone (Or atleast the equivalent)

Sochi, Russia for the 2014 winter games will bring the same problems though.

I thought that entire closing ceremony was rather weak; it just seemed like they went all out for quantity rather than quality. I thought Bejiing was so much better. The prospect of having the Olympics in a place like Rio is rather exciting; it is bound to be very entertaining.

All in all the Olympics were well done with only minor issues; so it should be considered a success.

I think they said that Rio is one timezone east of the Eastern timezone. I'm still expecting quite a few tape delayed broadcasts (like there was during the Vancouver games).

I would like to know how many people either turned the channel or turned off the TV when NBC cut to their sitcom. I would have been willing to stay up to 10:30 to see the ending, but not to watch a TV show that I have no intention of watching when it airs in a few weeks.

I actually thought the closing ceremony was great (other than NBC not showing The Who until after the local news!!). Perhaps Bejiing's was better quality, but if I don't know any of the entertainers, I don't care. At least I could relate to London's closing ceremony.

My mistake I thought they said Rio was one time slot West of the Eastern Time Zone. I suppose one slot east makes more sense; otherwise they would have just said Central Time. I don't think there would be too much tape delay for that time zone; probably a little but atleast there will be atleast a chance that viewers will miss the spoilers on line. For London you basically had to avoid the internets the entire afternoon.

After that little bit for Rio it made me realize I'm not going to give a crap about the Rio opening or closing ceremonies. I'm sure there will be plenty of hot women but nothing else I will really care about.

I don't understand why people watch opening and closing ceremonies. Bores the hell out of me.

I've always enjoyed the parade of nations, which shouldn't be a surprise given that I was a big time geography dork when I was in elementary school. Other than that, I don't really get it.

I enjoyed the games, but boy do I wish the big events were televised live. I know they got good ratings, and perhaps 90% of people don't really care that much, but for me it's just not worth it to stay up to 11:00 PM or so to watch the events on tape delay (please don't laugh, I do go to bed at 10:30 or so).

As for the medal counts, 'MURICA!

I watched a bit of the USA-Argentina game (I was at a friend's house and he didn't get NBCSN) on NBC's online streaming service and the quality was horrendous, to the point where it would have been difficult to see the ball on a 50" screen. Eventually we just switched over to a sketchy stream and the quality was significantly better.

But there will still be big events (gymnastics for example) that will take place during the day that they'll hold over until prime time before showing on TV.

I was somewhat ok with NBC's coverage, though I hate tape delay. Where it really got me was on weekends.

Events would be going on mid-afternoon on a Saturday, that they would hold off to show until that night. Why? It's a weekend!! People are home, or at least show it on a sister network if you don't want to show it on NBC. Having to watch two other countries play water polo while the 100m was going on live or whatever it might have been I found to be very, very annoying. Especially since on a weekend, it was way, way harder for me to get to primetime without finding out who won.

You don't have an HDMI port on your laptop? If you do you should be able to watch all the streaming on your TV.

Then my laptop (re: websurfing) is no longer available. Especially when the real solution is to have basketball/soccer on only one channel at a time.

No, you split screen the output and it treats your TV like a second monitor, showing whatever you are streaming on the TV and you are free to surf on your laptop.
