2012 Summer Olympics Thread

Funketown

Like others, I went online (jsonline) during lunch only to be spoiled by results (of gymnastics).

I can see why Chelsie Memmel was trying so hard to get back on the team. I wasn't aware the teams were downsized to five and all scores count.

I wonder how good they would be if Shawn Johnson didn't hurt her shoulder skiing two years ago, or what role she would have had.

Very glad to see Jordyn Weiber earn a gold medal with her gymnastics teammates after being excluded from the all around finals due to the RIDICULOUS "top 2 scores from each country" rule. What a joke that rule is. Good to see her smiling yesterday though!

Olympics is just entertaining because we get to watch stuff that we just don't see very often; a nice change of pace. I have been watching a lot of the obscure sports but unfortunately I dont get NBC Sports Network so I miss out on some of it. I have really enjoyed archery and I feel a bit guilty that I have liked gymnastics despite being a grown man. Maroney on the vault was just ridiculously awesome. Looking forward to track and field starting in the next couple of days.

That result in the womens fencing tournament is a damn shame; I liken it to the USA/Russian BBALL debacle from a number of years ago. Clock "malfunctions" but they let play go on despite time obviously running out. Felt bad for the Korean.

4 of the 5 fastest Olympic times ever in the 100 meters. The only one not there: Bolt's 2008 time.

My gosh.

Swimming has been very entertaining. Especially the American swimmers who won gold as somewhat of a surprise. That 15 yr old who won the 1600...amazing. Looked like she got out too fast and would certainly fade. I was looking forward to basketball, but have found myself way more interested in all the other events.

This USA/Canada soccer game is nuts right now as fondy said. The US has been down 3 times and come back and on their last tying goal the US got an indirect free kick from Canada's box which ended up leading to a hand ball and eventual goal. Megan Rapinoe has scored twice, her second one of the most ridiculous goals I've ever seen.

Edit: I'm pretty sure some player for Canada just blew out her knee.

Edit again: Alex Morgan with a header with under a minute to go in stoppage time!

Complete ecstasy for USA, total heartbreak for Canada. That was the single most intense soccer game I've seen this Olympics. Watching it, it seemed even more intense than the men's GB-Korea semifinal that went to penalty kicks.

I love this girl. Her bend & accuracy were on display all match long. She instantly won me over.

I'm getting a little bored with the track coverage. There are only so many 10-30 second races I can watch before I want to see something else. I am quite disappointed that NBC hasn't bothered to show many of the "field" events, such as long jump, pole vault, shotput, javelin, discus, etc... I'm sure some of the events have not happened yet, but they are willing to show two 10,000m races that are really not that interesting until the last 2-3 laps or so. I think some of the other athletes' feats are far more impressive and interesting than a qualifying race in track.

She was the unsung hero in the Women's world cup. No one seemed to talk about her, but she is the one who stirred the drink of their offense, always seeming to be in the right spot at the right time, and put the ball in the perfect spot.

Yeah, I can see why you say that. No one else on the field in the semifinal appeared to have the kind of ability she displayed in terms of striking the ball. She also had a lot of clever touches to free herself up and/or take possession of the ball.

Heck, she was just straight taking shots on goal from two corners! I haven't been watching soccer for that long now, but I've never seen a player so obviously shooting for goal from corners before.

Handball is by far the least creative of the class of games with goals at each end. Every other game like this has some interesting twist: In soccer, you can't use your hands, in hockey they play on ice, lacrosse with a stick, basketball with a hoop, water polo has water, etc.

To fix Handball, I propose that they release a very angry Rottweiler onto the court at the start of every game. Don't tell me you wouldn't watch.

Is it wrong for me to be rooting against the USA basketball team?

As far as coverage goes, didn't NBC use EVERY cable they had for Athens or Bejing, or was the the Vancouver winter games. I just remember seeing USA and TNT having olympics on it.

You knew me as Myday2001.

NBC had just acquired USA networks in 2004 so they may have been showing off the new channels and trying to drive viewership not to mention the limited internet speeds and streaming capabilities in 2004 and even in 2008. TNT is part of Time Warner and wouldn't have had Olympic coverage.

Aren't all events streamed on the internet now in addition to using MSNBC,Bravo, CNBC, NBC Universal Sports, NBC plus the special dedicated channels for soccer, basketball?

I think it is kinda funny how I keep reading (granted this is a lot of stock research of people trying to predict the future) that everyone is dropping pay TV so they can just watch streaming on the computer but then see all the complaints that the 6 hour time difference Olympics are tape delayed and there should be more coverage when it is all there streaming all day but apparently no one wants to watch it that way.

I'm not rooting against the USA basketball team. I am rooting against Kobe though. I can't stand him and he's been garbage in the Olympics. Especially yesterday, he single handedly allowed Australia back in the game and then chucked a bunch of 3s to get his 20 points after the game was out of reach.

After posting prolifically four years ago, just my second post on this thread as the games are winding down. My random thoughts:

Just got done watching my Super Bowl, the men's marathon. Too bad my man Sammy isn't alive to defend his title. The Ugandan surprises the Kenyans with a basic high school cross-country move at the Mile 23 mark. Good to see Meb climb back from 16th to finish fourth. Nothing wrong with that.

The thing about Jordan Weiber not making the AA finals is the setup that caused teammates to compete against each other. Kinda defies the spirit of team sports. Notice how the American media failed to mention three others found themselves also out due to the rule.

No, it's not wrong to root against the basketball if you feel the team has prima donnas.

I've yet to see one Chinese athlete with a tattoo.

Why do the German unis say "GERMANY" instead of "DUETSCHLAND"? This is new.

The splash-o-meter during the diving is an intersting new graphic. Something I'd expect from Fox Sports.

In the field events for track, I'd wish NBC would post the metric measurements next to the English equivalents. I'd think they'd be easier to follow.

A much better showing by the USA track team this time around as opposed to the disaster that was 2008. The relays did much better. It's unfortunate the men's 4x4 couldn't get the gold, but what can you do when you have just Angelo Taylor and three AAA call-ups?

I don't know, I just haven't been as inspired by these Olympics like I was in 2008. With the exception of Missy Franklin, it seems it was the same stars in the marquee events. Like trwi7, I prefer the Winter Olympics.
