Link Report for Sat. 7/28 -- Rested, rejuvenated Moye dazzles for Manatees

The new Stars players are not yet officially on any roster. The organization wasn't going to fly them to Pensacola regardless. Definitely a transition day for all. If not formally on the Stars' roster on Sunday, then Monday for sure. Long bus ride home (350 miles, about six hours in good conditions) tonight for a late afternoon game Sunday. Likely the toughest travel day of the season for the Huntsville squad.

They show up on the roster on the Huntsville website, but without numbers. Is that why they aren't considered to be officially on the roster yet?

Also note that their statuses are "Reassigned", as opposed to "Active"

Right you are...missed that. Thanks. Guess I'll have to wait til opening day 2013 to see Mr. Segura in person ;)

@Pensacola 6, Huntsville 4

Huntsville Box

The hard-throwing Wirfin Obispo held down the Huntsville bats to the tune of 2 H & 2 runs over 5 IP -- fortunately the hits were a Khris Davis single followed by a Hunter Morris 2-R HR in the 4th inning. Aside from that, Obispo was pretty dominant.

Jimmy Nelson had a rough first inning, back on the mound for the first time since June 30th. Billy Hamilton singled to lead off the game for Pensacola, & promptly stole both 2B & 3B during the very next PA. All in all, there were 4 SBs in the inning, along with 2 H, 2 BB, & a sac fly. In his second & final inning (reported by poster X-TAI to be pitch count related; Nelson left with 46 TP), Nelson put down the 8-9-1 hitters in order -- backwards K, groundout, groundout. So here's hoping Jimmy can get back on track.

Reliever R.J. Seidel also had a rough first inning of work, issuing back-to-back BBs to star the 3rd. An error from Scooter Gennett on an attempted double-play turn allowed an unearned run to score. A double & single in the 4th yielded Seidel's only ER on the night. 4 IP, 2 R/1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP was his final line.

Brian Garman worked a scoreless 7th, but back-to-back triples (believe it or not, neither one was by Hamilton) to lead off the 8th let a run in. He finished with 2 IP, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Khris Davis extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finishing 3-3 with a BB and 3 RBI. Davis was also credited with another OF assist, throwing out Hamilton as he tried to stretch a single into a double in the 4th. He was also caught stealing in the 8th.

Unfortunately, Kentrail Davis saw his 8-game streak come to an end, but he did draw a BB. Morris's lone hit was the 2-R bomb; he finished 1-4. Josh Prince, Tommy Manzella, and Anderson De La Rosa each singled once. In addition to his throwing error, Gennet went 0-4 on the game -- rough night for a guy who's had a rough second half (at least at the plate) so far. However, he did reach on a FC in the 8th & steal second base as part of the only other scoring inning for Huntsville.

As I noted, the only other runs came in the 8th... and it looks like Khris Davis may have been trying a little too hard to make things happen after his two-RBI single:

I apologize, I didn't intend on getting sucked into all of the various activities besides just golfing in the outing (which is what I've done since running the outing the first year). It's very late and I'm extremely wiped out so I'll keep all of the summaries very short here as I go.

Mustangs roll Brewers 15-8 in Billings

The Helena Brewers fell behind by five runs after three innings and couldn’t claw their way back in a 15-8 Pioneer League road loss to the Billings Mustangs on Saturday night.

Five different Mustangs had a pair of RBIs apiece, led by Daniel Pigott’s and Robert Ramirez’s three-hit performances.

Beau Amaral, Robert Maddox, Jeff Gelalich and Zachary Vincej each had their two RBIs on two hits apiece.

Billings pounded out 16 hits on the night and got much more bang for their buck than the Brewers did with their 13 hits.

Billings starter Sal Romano picked up the win after lasting five innings and allowing just two runs, one of which was earned, on six hits. He also struck out three and did not walk a batter.

The Mustangs pounded Helena starting pitcher Taylor Wall, who took the loss, for seven hits and five runs, two of which were earned, before he was pulled entering the fourth.

The Brewers’ bullpen didn’t fare much better against the Mustangs, who are tied for second in the league’s North division.

Reliever Martin Viramontes suffered through the worst stretch, allowing five hits and four earned runs in just 2/3 innings of work to start the sixth. He also threw two wild pitches and allowed a walk.

Adam Giacalone led the Brewers with a 3 for 5 night at the plate that included a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

Alfredo Rodriguez, Emmanuel Quiles and Kevin Berard each went 2 for 4 for the Brewers with an RBI apiece.

The Brewers, who remain stuck in the North’s basement at 13-25 overall are 11 games behind first-place Great Falls. The Mustangs trail the Voyagers by just three games at 21-17 thus far on the season.

Helena will play one more game at Billings, before heading to Missoula for a two-game road series on Monday.

Final: Clinton 3, Wisconsin 2

Streaking LumberKings top Rattlers on a walkoff single

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings won their sixth straight game and they beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to do it. A two-out RBI single by Chris Taylor in the bottom of the ninth inning snapped a 2-2 and sent the L-Kings to a 3-2 win at Ashford University Field on Saturday night. The loss was the first of the season for the Rattlers at Clinton. They had won the first six games played between the teams on Clinton's home field.

Chadwin Stang extended his hitting streak to twelve games with a double to start the Wisconsin third inning. Brandon Macias drove in Stang with a single for the 1-0 Wisconsin lead. The RBI for Macias was his 50th of the season.

The LumberKings (44-58 overall, 21-13 second half) had runners at the corners with no outs in the bottom of the third and tried a safety squeeze. But, Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Semmelhack pounced off the mound, fielded the bunt, and threw out the runner at the plate.

Wisconsin (60-43, 16-18) had a great opportunity to pad the lead in the top of the fifth against reliever John Taylor. They had runners at second and third with no outs. A grounder back to the mound turned into an out at first and held the runners at their bases. Greg Hopkins was at the plate when catcher Mike Dowd fired to third after a pitch to pick off the runner for the second out. Taylor would pick of the runner at second for the third out without throwing another pitch in the inning.

Semmelhack worked five shutout innings, walked one, and struck out one. He was not involved in the decision.

Reliever Maverick Lasker entered the game for the sixth inning and had two outs with runners at first and second. Mike Dowd blooped a double to center that dropped between three Rattlers players and both LumberKings runners scored on the play to put Clinton up 2-1.

The Rattlers rallied back in the top of the seventh. Yadiel Rivera drew a leadoff walk. Rafael Neda dropped a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first was wild. Rivera went to third and Neda wound up at second with no outs.

Carlos George tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center to get Rivera home. But, the Rattlers couldn't get Neda home and the game stayed tied 2-2.

The LumberKings had runners at first and second with no outs after Lasker walked the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth. But, Lasker got the next batter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. He would walk Dowd, who was 3-for-3 with three doubles at that point in the game, intentionally. Mark Williams came on to get the final out of the inning.

Williams walked Anthony Phillips to start the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice bunt moved the winning run to second. Williams got the second out on a strikeout. Then, Taylor cracked a 1-0 pitch to left and Phillips beat the throw home to score the winning run.

Game two of the series in Clinton is July 29. Jacob Barnes (3-3, 2.92) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton counters with Trevor Miller (6-6, 3.23). Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Final: Brevard County 3, Fort Myers 0

Brevard blanks Fort Myers

Moye tosses seven scoreless in 3-0 win

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees recorded its eight shutout of the season as they blanked the Fort Myers Miracle, 3-0 on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.

In his first outing in 13 days, 'Tees starting pitcher Andy Moye (5-2, 4.69) had his best performance of the season for Brevard (20-16 first half, 49-55 overall). Moye threw seven shutout innings and allowed just two base runners on one hit and one walk, while fanning five hitters. He retired the last ten hitters that he faced, en route to earning his first win in July.

Greg Holle and Casey Medlen completed the shutout by throwing an inning each. Medlen struck out the side in the ninth, to earn his 16th save of the season.

Offensively, the Manatees racked up 11 hits with Shea Vucinich, Jason Rogers, Mike Walker and Parker Berberet tallying two hits each.

Brevard got the scoring started in the fourth, which started with Berberet leading the inning off with a single and then John Dishon drawing a walk. Reggie Keen then grounded into a force out which retired Berberet at third. Then with Vucinich at the plate, the 'Tees were successful in a double steal with Dishon and Keen.

Vucinich would then ground out to second to plate Dishon for the first run of the game. Rogers would make it a 2-0 game with a two-out single to right that plated Keen.

In the top of the fifth, Ryan O'Rourke relieved Miracle (18-19, 46-58) starter Pat Dean and ran into trouble right away. Hector Gomez led off the inning by striking out but he reached first on a wild pitch, third strike by O'Rourke and then advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Knudson on the throw to first.

Cody Hawn then grounded out to move Gomez to third and Joey Paciorek would bring Gomez home on a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 3-0 Manatees advantage. Despite their 11 hits, Brevard County left 11 men on base and was just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The 'Tees also left runners in scoring position with two outs on five separate occasions.

Brevard County will look to salvage a series split as they close out their four-game set with Fort Myers on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

Lefty Jed Bradley will take the mound for Brevard (5-8, 4.93) in search of his first July victory. Matthew Summers (0-1, 4.50) will toe the rubber for the Miracle.

Isotopes Thump Sounds In Series Opener, 13-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Albuquerque Isotopes rapped out 17 hits en route to a 13-3 defeat of the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium in front of 9,249 fans in the opener of a five-game series.

Third baseman Alex Castellanos belted a pair of homers and drove in five runs and Jerry Sands went 4-for-6, including a longball, to pace the Isotopes offense.

Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Albuquerque erupted for 12 runs over the final four frames.

Isotopes starter John Ely (10-7) worked a quality start, holding the Sounds to three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings, to pick up the victory.

The Sounds took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning against Ely. With two outs, Caleb Gindl reached on a bunt single, moved to third on a Taylor Green single, and scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Tim Federowicz. Green's first-inning single extended the infielder's on -base streak to 24 consecutive contests.

· AUDIO: Gindl Scores First Run

Nashville upped the advantage to 2-0 in the second when Jordan Brown (2-for-3) tripled into the right field corner and scored on Jason Jaramillo's sacrifice fly.

Sands put the visitors on the board in the fourth when led off the frame with a solo homer to right off Sounds starter Brian Baker, his 16th home run of the year.

Baker stranded runners in scoring position during scoreless third, fourth, and fifth innings, but he was unable to do the same in the sixth, as Albuquerque knocked him from the game during a five-run frame.

The Isotopes loaded the bags with no outs on a walk followed by a pair of singles against the right-hander. After Baker retired the next two batters, Herrera grounded a two-run single up the middle to give the visitors a 3-2 lead, ending Baker's night.

Tim Dillard took over on the hill for Nashville and was greeted by a three-run homer to left off the bat of Castellanos, the third baseman's 12th big fly of the season.

Baker (2-4) allowed five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out six during his 112-pitch effort, the largest workload by a Nashville hurler all season.

The Sounds got a run back in the home half of the sixth when Corey Patterson singled and scored on a Gindl double, making it a 6-3 game.

· AUDIO: Gindl RBI Double

Albuquerque pulled further ahead in the seventh, tacking on three more runs against Dillard to extend its lead to 9-3. Matt Angle, pinch-hitter Tyler Henson, and Herrera each contributed RBI singles during the frame.

The Isotopes added a pair of runs in the eighth against Amaury Rivas before Castellanos capped off the evening's scoring in the ninth with a two-run homer to center, his second longball of the night and 13th of the year.

Sounds second baseman Eric Farris went 0-for-4 to snap his season-best 10-game hitting streak.

The teams continue their series with a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday evening that will consist of a pair of seven-inning games. Right-hander Hiram Burgos will make his Triple-A debut when he starts for the Sounds in the opener against Albuquerque left-hander Derrick Loop (9-2, 4.18). Right-hander Seth McClung (2-12, 5.76) will man the bump for Nashville in the nightcap and square off against right-hander Blake Johnson (2-0, 5.79).

Maryvale 1st rounder Clint Coulter's had an interesting season -- on base all four times Saturday, now with more walks than K's, OBP .392; for such a strapping kid, 20 of his 22 hits are just singles (SLG .314); fine athlete, yet caught stealing in four of five attempts by Arizona League catchers; and then, of course, feeling his way about the plate defensively. Certainly a learning expereince...

Manatees' Moye makes most of break

After layoff, Brewers prospect pitches seven one-hit innings

By Jonathan Raymond / Special to MLB.com

Andy Moye was given 12 days off since his last start. Apparently, he made good use of that time.

The Brewers prospect fired seven one-hit innings, striking out five batters and walking one, on Saturday as Class A Advanced Brevard County blanked Fort Myers, 3-0.

Moye (5-2) was afforded the extra rest when the Manatees switched to a modified six-man rotation.

The extra rest and mental reset did the trick for the 24-year-old right-hander after he surrendered 11 runs -- 10 earned -- on 15 hits over 9 1/3 innings in his previous two starts.

"It feels great. I had given up some runs and I took that little break, so I was able to get a mental break and rest my arm and get back to the way I was throwing earlier in the year," Moye said. "I was trusting my stuff to work, with all three of my pitches. You think you'd be a little rusty, but I was able to get around the zone with all of them."

Moye began the year with Class A Wisconsin and earned a swift promotion after going 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA in eight Midwest League appearances. He struck out 33 and walked eight across 37 1/3 innings with the Timber Rattlers.

That form initially carried over into the Florida State League, where he limited opponents to three earned runs or fewer in seven of his first eight starts. Moye struggled in back-to-back outings earlier this month as his ERA climbed from 4.35 to 5.36.

The 12-day respite, he said, helped him right the ship.

"I took a few days off from throwing, didn't pick up a ball. I did exercises and worked out and threw a couple bullpens and live [batting practice sessions] to stay fresh," the Georgia Southern product said. "I kind of got away from why I was so successful earlier in the year, tried to bump up the speed a little bit and left the ball up. When it's up, guys will hit it in this league."

The 2011 15th-round Draft pick said he'd been trying too hard to blow the ball by hitters and had to go back to focusing on hitting his spots.

"You get caught up trying to throw the ball hard, and I knew I didn't have that in me. The way I was feeling just wasn't as sharp as the beginning [of the season]," Moye explained. "I had to get back to trusting myself, locating down in the zone, rather than throwing hard. After I got over that hump, I was able to locate."

Saturday's outing dropped Moye's ERA down to 4.69, and he has 42 strikeouts against 19 walks over 55 2/3 innings for Brevard County.

"That was one of my better outings of the year," he said. "I definitely want to build off this start. You always have to get better, can't be satisfied."

Greg Holle worked through the eighth and Casey Medlen pitched the ninth for his 16th save, closing out the Manatees' eighth shutout.

Shea Vucinich and Jason Rogers both had two hits and an RBI for Brevard County.

Billy Hamilton reaches 115 steals in Wahoos' win

by Bill Vilona, Pensacola News-Journal

For a second night, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos continued their balanced production.

It resulted in a second win.

Seven of the eight position players contributed at the plate, catcher Mark Fleury helped with his glove and reliever Wilkin De La Rosa earned his first save for Pensacola in a 6-4 victory against the Huntsville Stars.

“It was a well-played game, we had a chance to run the bases a little bit and got a couple timely hits,” said Wahoos manager Jim Riggleman, whose club improved to 54-50 overall, 20-15 in the second half of Southern League play.

“(Stars) are a very good ballclub. They are going to get even better with a trade (the Milwaukee Brewers) made for three (minor league) ballplayers, so it will be an even better club when we see them again next week (on road).”

The 34th sellout of 54 home games watched the Blue Wahoos end the five-game series with a pair of solid wins, plus a post-game fireworks display, before the team hit the road for 10 games. It matches their longest break between homestands since April.

The hitting contribution began with Billy Hamilton. He produced a pair of singles, including a run-scoring hit in the fourth inning that drove in the fifth run. He was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double after the runner crossed the plate.

But Hamilton stole two bases after leading off the first inning with a single, later scoring on Bryson Smith’s sacrifice fly. Brodie Greene, who has struggled at the plate, delivered a two-out, two-run single to complete the first-inning rally.

The steals pushed Hamilton to 115 for the season, which stands 30 behind the all-time professional baseball record of 145 set by former St. Louis Cardinals great Vince Coleman in 1983 with Low-A Macon of the South Atlantic League.

Hamilton’s RBI hit in the fifth added another run, then Donald Lutz and Smith produced back-to-back triples in the eighth.

De La Rosa, who combined with Daniel Corcino for the team no-hitter earlier this season, was solid in pitching the final two innings for the save.

“He is a great kid, a great competitor,” Riggleman said. “Hopefully he builds on that and realizes he can be a real effective guy at this level and move on.”
