Greinke traded to Angels for three prospects; Rangers nearly won the bidding (Latest: revisiting this trade in December 2015; post 481)

Why can't you win now and next year and the year after and the year after?? My whole point is....they should have NEVER been in a position to trade Zach to begin with, their record this season notwithstanding.[/b]

You understand the Brewers(unlike the red sox, yankees, ect), have no where near the funds to do this kind of thing right? You want them to resign both Greinke and Fielder, ignoring the fact that combining those two salaries, along with Braun and Gallardos would make up about 70% of our payroll. You just can't operate a major league team like that. If you want to root for a team that overspends on vets and keeps EVERY single player they have, go root for the Yankees. With the make up of baseball right now, the Brewers cannot do it.

Really, can someone tell me why Bourjos is so highly valued by the Angels? Also, I know it's twitter but learn to freakin' type, Heyman.

No clue! Can Heyman tweet, "The Brewers were thrilled to not have an overrated CFer as a main part of the deal."

Just don't expect a lot of people around here to see your side of it because, frankly, I feel it's misguided.

Misguided? Ha! He proposes the Brewers trade for a Zack Greinke every year and resign the Zack Greinke to a long-term deal. Trade for and sign a superstar every year, win the World Series every year. Misguided? He's living in a fantasy world.

I was trying to keep it.. respectful. :laughing

At this point, who really cares? Tank the season and improve the draft position.

My thought exactly. You aren't making the playoffs(seriously, at this point, being above .500 is irrelevant), so position yourself for a top 5 pick next year and move on.

Anyone who demands Paul freakin' Konerko in a trade of Greinke this season... or you stand pat and take the draft pick... yeah. Not operating in reality.

Keith Law says this package is only marginally less than what we gave up to get Greinke but riskier because all three prospects have low floors.

Really happy with this deal.

I am surprised to hear Segura has a low floor. The other two do seem to have low floors. The ceilings of all 3 is really exciting

Keith Law is kind of a dope, though

Here is the package it appears Texas was offering,

The other finalist was Texas, which would not part with shortstop Jurickson Profar or third baseman Mike Olt. The Rangers offered infielder Leurys Garcia, left-hander Chad Bell and right-hander Justin Grimm.

That package is a joke. Sounds like Melvin did good to get what he got!

The key words in that bolded sentence are FEEL(or may) and future. Why look towards the future?? Why can't you win now and next year and the year after and the year after?? My whole point is....they should have NEVER been in a position to trade Zach to begin with, their record this season notwithstanding. He should have been signed to an extension last year already. The sooner you do it, and history shows this in ALL pro sports, the cheaper you get them. Look at Braun. The Brewers waited too long to try to resign Prince, and they waited too long to try to resign Zach.

There are only a handful of MLB teams that have the revenue streams necessary to buy enough major league talent to compete year-in and year-out. If that's what you're really looking for...the Yankees and Red Sox are that way (::points East:: ). While that may be a bit harsh, the reality is that even making the big acquisitions in the off-season doesn't always translate to winning (see the Miami Marlins), and even the high-salary teams go through their highs and lows. As a fan, the most you can hope for is that the team you're a fan of does everything they can to sustain the peaks and minimize the down years.

Most of my childhood encompassed the bad years. I remember hating to see Molitor leave as a kid (although I was ultimately happy for him when he won a ring in Toronto....much like I will be if Prince or Zach accomplishes as much this year). Unlike my childhood, I honestly believe that the current ownership and management of the team are willing to make the moves necessary to rebuild this team without a quarter-century between trips to the post-season.

P.S. If you want to blame anyone for the Brewers not signing Prince to a home-town deal, blame the Hall of Famer who stole his rookie signing bonus.

Per Ken Rosenthal, Brewers wanted Perez (weren't demanding Profar/Olt). Sounds like Texas was low-balling and now they got burned. Hope they lose the division and wildcard to LAA/OAK :)

This is depressing. Great! I'm overjoyed, the Brewers got players to help their minor league system. Whoopie!! The Brewers have lost enough as a franchise the last 20 years, after a few years of success, now we have to go back to losing for at least a couple of years again?? Great. When you trade a player like Greinke, or lose a player like Prince in FA, you are losing star players. Star players help you win, they drive attendance, they drive merchandise sales etc etc. It's all relative. Fans want a winner. That's what makes them come out to the ball park. Without star players, it makes it very hard to win consistently. Fans don't show up, eventually payroll drops, and your back in the same vicious cycle, you have been for so many years.

It sucks being a Brewer fan tonight, and I don't think it's going to be a whole lot of fun the next couple years at least either. *sigh*

A) We are not winning this year

B) Zack Greinke is a FREE AGENT at the end of this year

Honestly, how is hanging onto Zack Greinke conducive to us winning next year or after? Please explain.

I am sorry, but IMO this is a completely irrational approach. What do you want them to do, offer Greinke 5 years and $150 million? Jack up the payroll to $200M? Please tell me your approach. I think your plan of "I would've told them I want Trout or to get bent" tells us about all we need to know about the rationality of your plan.

Could you imagine if we had this for our 2013 payroll:

Greinke $24M

Fielder $23M

Braun $11M

Weeks $10M

Hart $10M

Ramirez $10M

Gallardo $7.75M

Aoki $1.25M

We'd need to non-tender all our arby guys and essentially fill the rest of the roster with 17 MLB minimum salaries to stay around the $100M mark.

Would you have felt that way if they would have won a world series with Prince in the next 5 years or so??

So we were going to win the World Series with Prince and zero pitching? We had Prince and Braun together for years but it wasnt until we got pitching that we had a chance. But in our market we CANNOT afford Prince and a guy like Greinke. I am not a proponent of completely gutting our team as some are, but Fielder and Braun without pitching wasnt going to win us anything. We down have the farm system to make another Greinke trade.

Only to lose that player in FA in another year or two after acquiring him. I LOVED the Greinke trade, and if the Brewers consistently do things like that on a yearly basis, I could live with it. But I betcha they won't.

Are you just messing with us, or are you serious?

You don't want to ever trade proven players for prospects, but yet you want to be able to somehow pull off a trade for a Zack Greinke type player every year. Not to mention have the payroll to support it. Do you seriously not see the many flaws in this argument?

Cecil Fielder is a Hall of Famer??
