Link Report for Fri. 7/27 - Rogers and Jungmann venture moundward (actually Rogers bumped for big league start Sunday)

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Big thanks to BrewCrewBall for the full Doug Melvin text, available here --

I had another general manager tell me today that we have the best hitting ball club in the Southern League with our Huntsville club with Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris and you add (Jean) Segura there and three fourths of our infield are real good prospects. Morris is having a phenomenal year in AA. And then you add (Johnny) Hellweg and (Ariel) Pena to the pitching staff there and Hiram Burgos is there, (Tyler) Thornburg started there earlier. We've added some real depth to our organization and it'll depend on the players and our development to determine how good of players they'll actually be.

Mark Rogers will be here tomorrow and he's going to pitch on Sunday. We believe in our young talent, we know there's going to be some bumps in the road when you go that path but it's in the best interest of the long term in the organization. So there will be some short term bumps but we're still a very talented club. And Zack told me that. He said there's still a lot of talent on this club. And while we've maybe had our bumps in the road with some late inning losses Zack liked the talent here and now we get some infusion of young talent coming along and a lot of pitching depth coming along so we're going to run some of them out there and see what we have. Who thought Mike Fiers would be doing what he's doing at this point? And we never thought Thornburg would be up here. Now Rogers has had four out of five, our last report were a couple of wild performances, and he's ready. Wily Peralta over his last seven starts or so he had one walk, nine strikeout game last night. He struggled earlier but now the arrow's pointing up for him. Some of those people we're going to get a chance to see.

Final: Wisconsin 4, Kane County 1

Wisconsin completes the sweep in Kane County

Goforth leads the way

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers did something with a 4-1 win over the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark that they hadn't done since 2009. The win gave Wisconsin a three game sweep of the Cougars. David Goforth allowed a run on two hits and picked up his eighth win of the season. Chadwin Stang and Cameron Garfield provided key hits for the Timber Rattlers.

Ben McMahan tripled with one out in the top of the second inning. Garfield followed with an RBI single and the Rattlers (60-42 overall, 16-17 second half) led 1-0 early.

Goforth was sharp. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. A one out infield single by Tim Ferguson in the sixth broke up the no-hit bid. The Rattlers right-hander got out of the inning when the next hitter lined into an unassisted double play on the next pitch.

Wisconsin pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning. Garfield doubled to start the inning and a one out walk to Adrian Williams put runners on first and second. Stang blooped a single into right-center to score Garfield. The hit extended Stang's hitting streak to eleven games, the longest hitting streak of the season by a Timber Rattler.

Kane County (50-53, 16-17) broke through against Goforth in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dannty Mateo drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. A two-out RBI double by Michael Antonio drove in Mateo. Goforth got the final out of the inning to maintain the 2-1 lead.

Goforth left after the seventh inning. He walked two and struck out five before turning it over to the bullpen.

The Rattlers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Wisconsin had runners at second and third with two outs and Stang sent a grounder behind the third base bag. The ball was fielded cleanly by Antonio. Then, he turned and fired to first as his momentum carried him into foul territory. The throw to attempt to get the speedy Stang was low and bounced away from the first baseman and both runners scored on the throwing error for a 4-1 lead.

Kevin Shackelford pitched a scoreless eighth and a scoreless ninth for Wisconsin to pick up his third save of the season.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with the start of a three game series at Clinton on Saturday night. Wisconsin right-hander Eric Semmelhack (0-0, 12.00) makes his first Midwest League start. The LumberKings counter with lefty Jordan Shipers (4-4, 3.76). Game time at Ashford University Field is 6:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm.

WP: David Goforth (8-5)

LP: Bryan Brickhouse (2-3)

SAVE: Kevin Shackelford (3)

TIME: 2:30

ATTN: 10,133

Wisconsin Box Score

The Timber Rattlers completed a series sweep of Kane County, behind another strong pitching performance, this time from David Goforth. He went 7 innings and gave up just one run on two hits. I've seen a lot of Goforth this season and it seems like when he gets hit hard, it's usually just been one bad inning that gets him. There was no such inning tonight. Kevin Shackelford pitched the final two innings, allowing just one walk to get his third save of the season.

Cameron Garfield and Ben McMahan led the way for the T-Rats offense. Garfield was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. He also knocked in a run and was hit by a pitch. McMahan went 2-4 with a triple and also scored two runs. He has now hit in 9 of his last 10 games. Michael Garza had a 1-3 night and Chadwin Stang was on base two times with a single and a walk. He also knocked in a run and stole two bases to give him 21 on the season.

Mark Rogers gets a call: Come to Milwaukee

Orrs Island native has overcome setbacks and will start Sunday for the Brewers

By Paul Betit, MaineToday.com Staff Writer

Mark Rogers has found a groove and is getting another chance to pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rogers, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Orrs Island, was scheduled to start Friday night for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds against the Memphis Redbirds.

Instead, he will start Sunday for the Brewers against the visiting Washington Nationals.

"He's real excited," said Craig Rogers, his father. "I think his only problem is that he might be too excited instead of going out there that first game, and just relaxing and doing what he does."

The call-up came after the Brewers traded Zach Grienke, their ace who is scheduled to become a free agent after this season, to the Los Angeles Angels for three top prospects.

It's the second time Rogers has been called up by the Brewers. He pitched 10 innings over a four-game span in September 2010.

"I think that he really wants to prove to himself that he belongs there," his father said. "He's been working hard to get to this point. His last three or four starts have been excellent. I think that he's ready."

Rogers, who has had to overcome a variety of health issues the past eight years, is showing the promise the Brewers saw when they made him the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft following his senior season at Mt. Ararat High in Topsham.

"I think I can safely say everyone in the organization thinks he's turned the corner," said Reid Nichols, director of player development for Milwaukee, prior to the call-up. "He's starting to become what we thought he would."

Rogers won five of his last eight starts for the Sounds to even his record at 6-6, lowering his earned-run average from 7.50 to 4.72. In his last three starts, he threw a total of 19 innings, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs while striking out 17 and walking seven. He allowed a total of three home runs in his last nine starts.

"The last month and a half I've felt pretty good," Rogers said Thursday. "This is the best I felt physically in a really long time. I finally feel like I'm over that stuff, and I'm excited to get past it."

That stuff includes a variety of surgical procedures and a lot of time spent in rehabilitation.

Last August, Rogers, 26, underwent surgery in both hands to combat bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome.

In July 2006, he injured his right shoulder and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum.

In June 2007, he had scar tissue removed as a result of the first surgery and ended up sitting out the 2008 season.

"Anybody who has been through surgery knows it takes a while for your body to feel like your body again," Rogers said. "I'm at the point where I feel like myself, entirely. I feel like I'm in pitching shape again. I'm back into a form where I can pitch deep into a game, 100 pitches and have no problems, and that's a really good feeling."

At the start of the season, Rogers' fastball topped up at 92 miles per hour. During the past two months, it's consistently been in the 92-97 mph range.

"I think I'm pitching with more confidence, and my stuff has just gotten better since the beginning of the year," he said.

"The velocity is better. It's where it was in 2010. I'm throwing more change-ups. I'm throwing a slider and a curveball, and I'm really throwing strikes. I've been able to throw multiple pitches for strikes at this level."

Nichols said the Brewers have been pleased with Rogers' progress.

"I'm not surprised by what he's doing," the former Boston Red Sox outfielder said. "I think he's learned what he has to put into it in order to get to where he wants to go."

"I've put in a lot of work and I feel I've made a lot of progress as far as pitching goes," said Rogers, who started the season by finishing a 25-game suspension after testing positive last summer for use of a banned stimulant for a second time.

Pitching at the Triple-A level really aided in his development, he said.

"The biggest difference between (Triple-A) and other levels is you're pitching to professional hitters, guys who have had some big-league time," Rogers said. "They have a real good feel for the strike zone, and a lot of guys aren't going to chase pitches. I think you can really learn how to pitch and how to play the game correctly at the Triple-A level, and I think the reason for the success I'm having right now is I took the time to learn how to pitch."

All this, and he doesn't even say the word "Davis." Kentrail looks like he's figured some things out, and Khris has been absolutely en fuego.

Otherwise a pretty crummy night on the farm, though. Last year's draft is looking seriously grim.

All I can say to that is, "Wow." Maybe that's Nichols blowing sunshine... but I can't think of a time where he's said something like that in recent memory.

Manatees doubled up by Miracle, 6-3

07/27/2012 10:32 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

FORT MYERS, Fla. - 2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann had the second shortest start of his career as the Brevard County Manatees were defeated by the Fort Myers Miracle, 6-3 at Hammond Stadium on Friday night.

Jungmann (8-6, 4.02) went just 3.2 innings as he allowed six earned runs on ten hits. He walked two and struck out one as he failed to get past the fifth inning for the third time this season out of 20 starts.

The Miracle jumped on Jungmann and the 'Tees (19-16 second half, 48-55 overall) in the first inning as Daniel Santana led off the inning with a single and two batters later, Steven Liddle singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Then with Josmil Pinto at the plate, Jungmann threw two wild pitches, the first of which allowed Santana to score.

After walking Pinto, Lance Ray singled to left to bring home Liddle and make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Miracle (18-18, 46-57). A third wild pitch in the inning by Jungmann allowed runners to move to second and third, but he was able to induce two consecutive ground outs to end the inning and prevent any further damage.

The Manatees would those runs back right away as Mike Walker led off the second with a solo homer. Brock Kjeldgaard then singled and would score three batters later on a two-out double by Parker Berberet as the Manatees tied the game.

A two-out RBI single by Anderson Hidalgo in the third would give the lead back to Fort Myers and then the Miracle touched up Jungmann for three runs in the fourth. A RBI double from Steven Liddle gave Fort Myers a 4-2 lead and then two batters later Lance Ray hit a two-run homer to right to make it a 6-2 game.

The duo of Tommy Toledo and Eric Arnett out of the bullpen kept the Manatees in the game the rest of the way as Toledo threw 2.1 shutout innings and Arnett threw two of his own with three strikeouts.

Brevard however would only be able to get one run the rest of the way as Walker hit his second solo shot of the game with one out in the sixth. For Walker, it was his first career multi-homer game as he continues to have a stellar July. He is hitting .313 with a .429 on-base percentage and .484 slugging percentage in 20 games this month.

The Manatees will try and get their first win of the series against the Miracle as the two teams square off again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Andy Moye (4-2, 5.36) will toe the rubber for Brevard as he will be making his first appearance since July 15. Moye is looking for his first win since June 29 and has struggled in July with a 0-2 record and a 7.63 ERA in three starts.

Fort Myers will counter with southpaw Pat Dean (6-6, 3.89). The 2012 Florida State League All-Star is looking for his first win since June 27 and his only other start against the 'Tees back on May 18, he allowed just one run and struck out eight in eight innings of work.

Box Score

So, pretty sure I was just touting Mike Walker (2-4 2 HR) as a prime candidate for a power surge. He hit 8 and 9 tonight and even just a mini-surge (4-5 over the next 2 weeks) could leave him in the 15-18 range by the end of the year. Walker kills RHP (.322 AVG) but his LHP splits are atrocious and his D is currently suspect. With Jason Rogers (0-4) getting pitched around and now falling cold and T.J. Mittelstaedt getting promoted, it was imperative for some other hitter to step up. The hitter has been Walker.

On the mound, Taylor Jungmann got destroyed. Taylor was way off kilter. He had 3 WP in 1 inning and gave up a [sarcasm]disturbingly high 5 FO's[/sarcasm]. On the bright side, Eric Arnett and Tommy Toledo continue their fine seasons. There were whispers (bottom of page) that Arnett was primed for a big breakout within the Brewers organization. My bet is that if it does happen, it will be next season in Huntsville's rotation. Arnett has now gone 2+ innings in 8 of his past 10 appearances. Could they be gearing him up?

The rare Brewers lefty starter (3 in all of the minor league system) Will West had an unmentionable line, but the next two guys were impressive. Michael White struck out the only guy he faced and Preston Gainey went 3 IP giving up only a solo homer while striking out 3.

AZL Indians 5 AZL Brewers 1

Box Score

If Orlando Arcia had trumpets blaring in 2011, Eduardo Reyes certainly hears...antelope shofar... in 2012.

Feast of Trumpets

Check out this line for his stateside debut: 6.1 IP 0 H 0 R 2 BB 9 K. That instantly becomes the best game pitched by either Brewers rookie ball team. Austin Hall got the start and was obliterated, so I don't know who looked worse; Hall or the Indians hitters against Reyes. Ryan Fasano pitched the final frame and left intact and with a K.

Jose Sermo (2-3 BB) and Angel Ortega (2-4 2B) had good nights. No one else did but Clint Coulter (1-4) did finish the night with a clean sheet on D. Even more impressive was that he did not DH (I checked). That's right, no passed balls or errors. Holy crap, he even threw a guy out trying to steal!

Brock Kjeldgaard was actually pulled after his 4th inning AB for Brevard because of his removal from the 40-man roster (designated for assignment, must now clear waivers before eligible to play again).

Edwin Maysonet, also DFA'd tonight, was idle for Nashville.

Should each clear waivers, Kjeldgaard will be outrighted to Brevard; Maysonet could decline his outright assignment and choose free agency.

Kjeldgaard: "So skip, I'm pulled, have I been traded?"

Skip (Joe Ayrault): "Well, here's the thing..."

Final: Memphis 4, Nashville 3 (10 Innings)

Sounds Drop Finale To Redbirds In Extras

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds plated three runs in the top of the tenth inning and withstood a Nashville rally in the bottom of the frame to hang a 4-3 loss on the Sounds on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

With the one-run defeat, the Sounds (48-58) missed an opportunity to record a sweep of their cross-state rivals as they fell to 4-5 in extra-inning action on the year.

In the Memphis tenth, pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter drew a one-out walk from Rob Wooten (0-1) and later scored the winning run on Matt Adams' bases-loaded single to right. Eugenio Velez gave the visitors some breathing room when he delivered a two-run single to right to extend the lead to 4-1.

Nashville didn't go down without a fight against Memphis closer Eduardo Sanchez in the bottom of the tenth. The Sounds placed runners on second and third with one out before Corey Patterson ripped a two-run double to right to reduce the deficit to 4-3. After Sanchez struck out Eric Farris for the second out, left-hander John Gaub took over on the Memphis hill and struck out Caleb Gindl to secure the victory and record his first save of the year.

AUDIO: Patterson 2-Run Double

Donovan Hand made a spot start for Nashville after Mark Rogers was scratched less than an hour before game time and performed well. The right-hander took a no-decision after allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in his five innings of work. In three spot starts this season, Hand has posted a 2.08 ERA (3er/13.0ip).

Hand got some early help from his defense as he escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second inning when he induced Pete Kozma to hit a double-play grounder to second.

Memphis broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Ryan Jackson led off with a single and later scored on a groundout.

Nashville rallied to tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth against Memphis starter Brandon Dickson. Logan Schafer led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jeff Bianchi before racing around to score on pinch-hitter Jordan Brown's two-out single to right.

AUDIO: Brown Game-Tying Single

Dickson took a no-decision after working a solid outing for the Redbirds. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits over 7 2/3 frames of action, fanning six.

Both teams put runners on third with one out in the ninth but neither team scored. Velez doubled for Memphis before Wooten got out of the jam by inducing three straight groundouts by the Redbirds. For the Sounds, Farris ripped a leadoff double to left off Sam Freeman and advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded as Taylor Green struck out and Logan Schafer flew out.

Farris' ninth-inning double extended the infielder's longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games, the Sounds' second double-digit streak of the year (Brooks Conrad, 16).

The Sounds continue their homestand on Saturday evening by welcoming the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Dodgers) to town for the 6:35 p.m. opener of a five-game series. Right-hander Brian Baker (2-3, 4.91) will man the bump for Nashville to face Albuquerque right-hander John Ely (9-7, 3.34).

Nashville Box Score

I usually bounce our affiliate websites once or twice a week just to see what they are pimping and so on, while Nashville might have the worst facility in AAA, they absolutely nail or exceed expectations everywhere else. If they could just get a decent facility they'd rival Wisconsin for the total package. Helena is also top notch, especially for a PL team, archived audio is just a tremendous addition to their total package.

I'm pretty happy for Donovan Hand, he's been steady but unspectacular for years, I hope he gets a shot at being in Milwaukee's pen next year. Same same for Jesus Sanchez, I love me a turn around success story, from C to a RP who can run it up there in the mid 90s, fantastic! Rob Wooten on the other hand hasn't made a smooth transition to AAA and he's the type of guy who's going to have to prove it at every level. I can't even it call it a tough luck loss because he walked a guy and then Memphis was able to string together a bunch of hits in a row.

Opposing pitcher Brandon Dickson is an interesting guy for the Cards. He went undrafted, he worked up 1 level at a time and was never great, but was never bad either, just right in the middle everything from ERA to his peripherals, to his rate stats. This is his 3rd season in AAA and for the first time he was rated in the Cards top 30 at #22 after 2011.

Final: DSL Blue Jays 12, DSL Brewers 2

DSL Brewers Box Score

This might have been the most poorly played game at any level all season. Pitchers Juan Santiago, Miguel Diaz, and Angel Ventura all got lit up bad, but the defense behind them was even worse with 5 errors. Joshua Torres did manage to pitch a clean 8th.

FIELDING

E: De La Cruz, Y (8, throw), Colatosti (10, fielding), Rubio (5, fielding), Mendoza, A (9, fielding), De Leon, J (1, fielding)

Offensively Francisco Castillo (2-4,2B,3B) has certainly picked up momentum after his all-star appearance, hitting a solid .333 over his last 10. Juan De Leon (3-4,HR) also had a very nice game.

Carlos Belonis returned to the starting line-up as the DH and went 0-4 with 3SO.
