Impressions of Roenicke 2012

You can forgive a manager for the pen when it stinks like it does this year.
Managing the bullpen is one of the few areas that a manager can actually control in a game. The bullpen is bad this year, but RRR is horrible at bullpen management.

Question is, would Yost have started Kotsay in CF, in one of the most important games this franchise has ever played? (with Gomez and Morgan on the bench)

He played Kevin Mench over Corey Hart

And DH'd Tony Gwynn.

He isn't good, but He isn't the worst. His problem is that he is to rigid with bullpen roles. I can understand that with the 9th inning. That is just how MLB managers are(not that I agree or think it is good). I think that is his problem overall at managing. He gets it in his head what should be done in any given situation instead of playing matchups or being flexible. It makes him predictable.

I blame Wang.

I miss Ken Macha.

Last season he hit Carlos Gomez 2nd the overwhelming majority of his starts.

Last season he thought Kameron Loe could get lefties out, despite 4 years of evidence he couldn't.

Last season he thought Felipe Lopez was a better option than Taylor Green.

Last season he thought Casey McGehee was a better option than Taylor Green or anyone else.

Last season he thought that every playoff game should be managed just like a regular season game.

I guess I cannot understand why you thought he was a good manager last year. Last year, everything went right, and the talent overwhelmed his bad decisions. Yost was just as bad.

I miss Macha.... but wait, the players hated him. Go look at the two teams he had, and the fact that they won 76 and 78 games.

The guy did something right.

I completely agree with this post. I would just add the bunting and aggressiveness on the base-paths has also bothered me with RR, though I 'm not sure those are as obvious of short comings as your list.

I miss Ken Macha.

I miss Phil Garner :ohwell

Absolutely. In my view, (criticisms related to Eldred aside) Garner was the best manager that this team has had in the past 20 years. People make excuses for Macha regarding the starting pitching. They should look at some of the staffs that Scrap Iron had to deal with.... one year, his Opening Day starter was Rafael Roque. Garner's teams usually played way over their heads until at least mid-summer, when key injuries set in and/or their out manned pitching completely fell apart. They never quit like Macha's teams did.

Macha's teams actually played a combined 2 games over .500 in August and September. So, I don't think you can really say his teams quit.

I don't think that the whole story can be told in the won loss record. Macha's teams seemed to lose interest pretty early in the season- his first year shortly after Weeks broke his hand, and his second year during and after the long losing streak (early June?). More specifically, I never saw worse body language in a team than I did in the second half of 2010. Watching that team, it was quite apparent that there was not a crap to be given anywhere on the field, in the dugout or in the clubhouse. It was like watching a 3-12 NFL team playing the 3rd string QB in week 17 with everyone lollygagging to the huddle and standing with their hands on their hips. Back to W/L record, during Nedly's dreadful 2nd half collapses, you at least got the feeling that the team was still trying, trying too hard perhaps, but at least trying.

Does anyone think that maybe Sveum should have had his shot after 2008? He seemed to be one that would be liked and respected by his players - but also not have the baseball intelligence of a turnip.

Yes. For whatever reason, Melvin was fixated on Macha though. Sveum should have certainly gotten a better opportunity after 2010 as well. I'm guessing that the front office perceived him as being too cozy with the players to be a full time manager. In that respect Sveum was a lot like Harvey Kuenn (though Kuenn also had the health issues).

I think you are pushing your feelings off on the team. Bad teams are always accused of quitting/playing without energy. We saw the same thing earlier this year when the team was really bad. I am sure we will see some posts about it in the next week as trades are made.

I also thought Sveum should have gotten the job and was perplexed as to why he did not.

I am convinced Sveum blew his shot by starting Suppan instead of Gallardo in game 4 of the NLDS.

Personally I think the pressure of winning near the trade deadline and the thought of possibly getting traded are wearing on the team right now. Once next Wednesday comes I think they loosen up a bit. I don't think players have quit; the bullpen just sucks.

I am generally been an RR fan; the only big issue with him is he bunts way to damn much. I really like how he handles the other part of his duties but he does play for one run a little too much. It has worked a number of times but teams are catching on and making it harder to execute.

I really haven't gotten the impression that these guys are mailing it in this year. After the past week, I almost wouldn't blame them if they started to though.

Roenicke on Gamel:

"I don't know about him. We still like him but I don't think he's a guy you can say, 'Oh yeah, he can definitely do it.' "

Way to inspire confidence in the young man, Skip.
