Offseason deal? Hellickson for Aoki and Maldonado

Fun times to think about possible trades.... The season is in the crapper, but hope floats to a possible playoff shot in 2013.

We need starting pitching. We are all 99% sure that Greinke is gone. Marcum probably is gone. Wolf probably is gone. We need some stud pitching. The Rays have been the best team in baseball to deliver year after year of great homegrown, cheap pitching. They are resembling the A's from the early 2000's with Zito, Hudson, and Mulder, among others. We should be looking here first because they know they can grow more starters. Could this possibly get done this offseason?

Hellickson for Aoki, Maldonado, Nelson----- We could get a young upper level pitcher for 4 plus seasons. We'll have a huge need for proven pitching next year, and his price tag shouldn't be much in the first year because he hasn't hit arby yet. We would have to give up Maldonado, a top catching prospect now you'd have to think. The Rays could get six years of him. Aoki would fit really nicely in CF with Upton being gone. We could bring up Schaffer or go with Morgan in CF again, with Hart in RF and Gamel at 1B. Aoki's contract is very team friendly for two more seasons, something the Rays depend upon. Nelson could restock some of their pitching.

Moreover, the Rays have a lot of money tied up in two starting pitchers already for years ahead and Price will be hitting arby soon. They'll be looking for some good cheap investments in CF and C. Yo and Hellickson as #1 and #2 looks very good.

Underwhelming? Maybe. Yet, the Rays have to look at their budget more closely than we do (I can't believe I'd ever say that). Good, cheap, team controlled talent is a priority for them. Scary topic for them.... Price's pricetag in arby.

I'm actually not sure I would give up Aoki/Nelson for Hellickson. His peripherals in the majors have been horrendous (negative fWAR this season) and he's already close to hitting arbitration. Meanwhile, Nelson is coming into his own as a prospect.

I'd agree with you 100%, but Nelson hasn't pitched since June 30th. I haven't seen any kind of update on his health status, but I sure haven't seen him in a box score.

Yeah, that's troubling, but with pitchers the Brewers take a hang-nail and sit them out for two months.

Of course you also hear about how it's a minor injury and the next update is the had TJ surgery. Still I'd think a guy like Nelson would be a guy that people would know about if he had something serious going on.

But I don't want to trade Nelson and for the love of GOD I don't want to try and be a playoff team in 2013 unless we sign Zach Greinke in the off-season after trading for Segura and Richards. Then we'd be bringing back the same team, plus a young potential stud at SS and a POWER arm that would probably just slide into the 8th inning role and could be a stud reliever for us and an eventual closer.

I also don't want to trade Maldonado. Frankly...and it hurts to say this, I'd like to play out the first half of next year, see Rickie get off to a good start like he has several times in his career and perhaps he's hitting .275/.280 with a solid .365 OBP and 16 or so HR's at this time next year and we can can move him and start the process of moving Lucroy to 2nd base....if he has the agility for it. I don't know that he does. But I'd like to see if we could get both our catchers in the lineup.

There is no way you move Lucroy from a premium position at C to 2B, especially when in talking about the time frame you put in place Gennett should be ready to take over. So basically it would be the question of would you rather have Gennett or Maldonado in the lineup. That seems like a no brainer.

With the Greinke trade, we're in an even better position to deal for a front line pitcher. Tampa lines up really well with us right now.

They need catching, a CF, and more young pitching (as always, with them) with cost-controlled contracts. We have Aoki,Maldy, and an almost their pick of pitching for someone at AA.

This off-season, I'd like to have Hellickson back, but two years of Shields wouldn't be bad either for 21 mil.

I doubt we ever see Scooter at 2B in the bigs for the Brewers. Segura is a 2B so I bet that is where he ends up. We all love Scooter, but I don't see him as an everyday 2B. Hopefully Segura can improve at SS, and leave the door open for Sccoter, but I am not sure that will happen.
