Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Starting pitcher Barnes solid in Timber Rattlers' loss

by Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — Jacob Barnes was a bit of a mystery entering the season, since Matt Erickson and his Wisconsin Timber Rattlers staff didn’t know much about him.

The mystery has been solved. Barnes has emerged as an effective pitcher and a valuable find for the Rattlers.

And though he has worked primarily out of the bullpen, Barnes showed Monday night that he could handle a starting role.

In his second professional start, the 22-year-old right-hander held Lansing hitless for four innings and turned in a highly competitive outing for the Rattlers in a 6-1 loss to the Lugnuts.

Barnes allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out five in six innings.

“He’s probably been the biggest surprise on the pitching staff from when we left spring training,” said Erickson. “He’s been kind of a workhorse. He’s a big kid and gives you consistent innings every time out.

“It looks like he may have a chance to start some more games with the starters we’ve lost. He had a pretty good night. He gave us a chance to win.”

Barnes, who didn’t get much hitting support and was charged with the loss, is 3-3 with a 2.92 ERA.

Barnes, a 14th-round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2011 first-year player draft, threw 91 pitches, including 59 for strikes. He had some control issues early and walked five, but threw strikes when he needed to.

“I’m used to going to three or four innings, but you have to go deeper as a starter and I haven’t thrown this many pitches in a long time,” said Barnes, who played at Florida Gulf Coast University. “My command was off a little bit, especially early, and I hurt myself with some walks. But overall, I ended up only making two bad pitches all night.”

Lansing’s K.C. Hobson took care of one of them, slamming a solo homer in the sixth. The Lugnuts smashed the game open with a three-run ninth off Rattlers newcomer Eric Semmelhack.

Wisconsin collected eight hits, but was just one-for-nine with runners in scoring position.

“Actually, we had some better at bats today than over the weekend,” said Erickson. “Their pitching staff is good. That’s a good ballclub. They got good pitching. They took care of the ball. They got timely hitting and they walked around with a little swag like they were going to kick our butts, which they did.

“It was just a little reminder that we’ve got work to do.”

Center fielder Lance Roenicke supplied the defensive play of the game, delivering one of the best catches of the season. Roenicke chased down a long fourth-inning drive by the Lugnuts’ Kenny Wilson and made a leaping, over-the-shoulder grab against the center-field fence.

“I was just happy it worked out,” said Roenicke. “I got a good jump on it and it hung in the air for awhile. Had it been more of a live drive, I would have played it off the wall. But it was in the air long enough for me to go get it.”

Roneicke has played primarily left field since joining the Rattlers.

“That was a great catch,” said Erickson. “I asked him before the game if he had played much center and he said he’s very comfortable out there. He made a couple nice plays and I’d feel comfortable putting him back out there.”

Lance Roenicke might end up being more than just a courtesy pick, he's been impressive since he was drafted. I, like many I'm sure thought he was going to be another Yost, but he looks to have a legitimate future.

Audio from Nashville — Jonathan Lucroy Returns to Music City

Tonight’s interview is with Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, a Sound from 2010 who returns to Nashville for two games to continue his six-game rehab assignment for Milwaukee. Lucroy has been out since late May with a hand injury, and the Brewers hope to have him back by Thursday when they return from Philadelphia.

In this chat, Lucroy discusses what the rehab process has been like from his surgery, whether he thinks the Brewers are still in the race, how difficult it has been for him to watch the team struggle while he’s been out, the impact that Martin Maldonado has made with the Brewers and the comparison between Lucroy’s 2010 season and Maldonado’s 2012 season.

'Tees edged by rival Cubs

07/24/2012 10:46 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees recorded just five hits and struck out 13 times as they fell 4-3 to their rivals, the Daytona Cubs on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Manatees starting pitcher Jed Bradley (5-8, 4.93) tied a season-high by throwing seven innings, but allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits. The 2011 first round pick walked three, threw two wild pitches and did not strike out a batter for the third start this season.

Daytona jumped on Bradley and the 'Tees early as Matt Szczur and Rubi Silva both recorded RBI singles in the first to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. A passed ball by Joey Paciorek with two outs in the second inning, scored Micah Gibbs as Daytona took a 3-0 lead.

Brevard (17-14 second half, 46-53 overall) would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Mike Walker led off the frame with a walk and two batters later Cody Hawn singled to put two on. Shea Vucinich then stepped in and recorded his 20th double of the season, which would plate Walker and make it a 3-1 game.

Joey Paciorek would then reach on a fielding error by Daytona shortstop Elliot Soto, which allowed Hawn to score and put runners on the corners with one out. That would be all that the 'Tees would get though as both Franklin Romero Jr. and Nick Shaw struck out swinging to end the inning.

It turned out that those two runs would be all that Brevard County would get off of Cubs (13-18, 43-56) starting pitcher Matt Loosen. Loosen, who is second in the Florida State League in ERA, yielded just three hits in six innings and struck out eight.

The Cubs would score one more run off of Bradley and the 'Tees in the fifth as Rubi Silva's two-out triple plated Rebel Ridling and gave Daytona a 4-2 lead. Greg Holle would relieve Bradley in the eighth as kept Brevard in the game as he threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Brevard County plated one more run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Brock Kjeldgaard. In the ninth, Vucinich led off the inning with a single to left to put the tying run on base. After Vucinich though, the 'Tees would go down in order as they dropped their second straight game after winning four straight.

The Manatees and the Cubs will close out their three-game series with a doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Wednesday with game one set to begin at 5:35 p.m.

Brooks Hall (4-3, 3.97) will get the ball for the 'Tees in game one, while Eric Marzec (1-2, 2.84) will get the call for the second game.

Daytona will counter with P.J. Francescon (1-4, 3.58) in the first game and southpaw Frank Del Valle (5-3, 3.68) will toe the rubber for game two.

Daytona (Cubs) 4 Brevard County 3

Box Score

Jed Bradley went 7 innings but the quality was lacking. 7 H 4 R 3 ER 3 BB 0 K 0 HR 2 WP 10:9 GO:FO and 1 Pickoff accompanied Bradley's line. Until Bradley's FB regains a tick or two, I cannot see him having much success. Now, I do not pretend to know what the problem was tonight, but in general, his FB is too slow and straight and his slider is too inconsistent to be used as an out pitch. These were not problems with Bradley's repertoire even just 12 months ago. Prospects can and do regress, let's just hope it's a one step back, two steps forward kinda thing.

Greg Holle finished with 2 brilliant innings, including 3 K.

Shea Vucinich was 2-4 with a 2B and Mike Walker went 1-2 with 2 BB. Walker put up a mid-.800's OPS in WI last year with 20 2B and 15 homers. He is sitting mid-.700's at BC with 16 2B and 7 homers. Do not be surprised if some of these 2B turn into homers over the 2nd half and then certainly next year in the Southern League. Reggie Keen stole his 33rd base.

Cubs jump ahead in Loosen's 9th W

07/24/2012 10:07 PM ET

By Tyler Murray

Viera, FL - The Daytona Cubs rode another dominant start from RHP Matt Loosen (W, 9-3) to a 4-2 win over the Brevard County Manatees on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium, snapping a four-game losing streak and giving Loosen his league-leading ninth win of the season.

Loosen allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over six innings, and ranks third in the Florida State League with a 2.81 ERA. The right-hander got some help from CF Matt Szczur, who made an outstretched diving catch at full sprint at the left-center field warning track to rob 1B Cody Hawn of an RBI double.

The Cubs went ahead early, plating two runs against LHP Jed Bradley (L, 5-8) in the first inning on RBI singles from Szczur and RF Rubi Silva. With a 2-0 lead, C Micah Gibbs took advantage of some sloppy pitching in the second inning to extend the advantage. After reaching with a one-out single, Gibbs moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout by SS Eliot Soto, and scored Daytona's third run on a two-out passed ball by C Joey Paciorek.

The Manatees struck back with two runs in the bottom of the second, as 3B Mike Walker drew a walk to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Hawn laced a single to right field, and 2B Shea Vucinich knocked in Walker with a double down the left-field line. Hawn then came home from third on a grounder to short, which bounced off Soto's chest for his first error of the season. Loosen managed to strike out RF Franklin Romero, Jr. and SS Nick Shaw to strand runners on the corners and end the inning with a 3-2 advantage.

Silva provided some insurance with an RBI triple in the fifth inning, which turned out to be the deciding run, as RHP A.J. Morris (S, 1) allowed a run in the eighth to make it 4-3. Still, the right-hander was able to close out the ninth inning for his first save of the season. RHP Ryan Searle pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two hitters in the process.

Silva reached base three times and finished with two RBIs, while 1B Rebel Ridling wowed the crowd with a towering double off the center field wall.

The Cubs and Manatees will play a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, with Game 1 scheduled to start at 5:35 p.m.

Ogden (Dodgers) 9 Helena 5

Box Score

Leonard Lorenzo saw his ERA creep up over 4.00 with this start. Leonard was picked and prodded throughout his start with earned runs in 4 different innings being charged to him. Mike Francisco relieved Lorenzo, but he could not slow 'em down. Elliot Glynn had the only clean inning. Unfortunately he walked as many as he retired so nothing to great from any of the H-Crew pitchers.

At the plate, Helena made some noise late, but it was not nearly enough. Alfredo Rodriguez (2-4 2B 3B BB) continues to rack up XBH's as he now has 6 2B and 1 3B in his last 10 games. It will be very interesting to see how the Brewers handle the SS position at the lower levels next season. Rodriguez will surely be in A or A+ depending on what they do with Yaddy Rivera, right? I could see Rivera repeating WI with Rodriguez heading to Brevard. Michael Reed (2-5), Michael Turay (2-4 2B) and Ruben Ozuna (2-4) also had multi-hit games. Tyrone Taylor is still MIA.

That 2009 draft makes me want to puke. Trout gets taken the pick before the Brewers in the first round, and then between that pick and when the Reds draft Billy Hamilton at #57 the Brewers select Eric Arnett, Kentrail Davis, and Kyle Heckathorn. And Tyler Skaggs gets taken the pick after Kentrail Davis.

The Brewers don't make the playoffs, pick ahead of Anaheim, and end up with Trout, Skaggs, and Hamilton. What could have been...

Edgardo Rivera, who at 18 years old may be the fastest player in the organization, has drawn 11 walks over his first 42 pro plate appearances. A fast CF who takes walks? Yes, please.

Edit: He drew another walk while I was typing this.

Jose Pena with three more walks today as well.

Edit: He did, too.

Huntsville 6, @Pensacola 1

Huntsville Box

Hiram Burgos, Hiram Burgos Hiram Burgos. Hiram, Burgos... Hiram Burgos Hiram. Burgos; Hiram Burgos.

There! ... Just in case there was any confusion as to what the focus should be on from this one. His final line: CG, 8 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 7:8 GO:AO, 103 TP (73 strikes). Nice to see the Brewers take the kid gloves off Burgos & just let him pitch; seems like his outings were rarely past 85-90 pitches lately.

A first inning HR (shortly after Burgos picked off Billy Hamilton) was the only Pensacola XBH on the game. Not much else to say about Burgos -- he was dominant.

Now I said the focus should be on Burgos, and while that's true, there was one other wrinkle to tonight's game. A couple Sundays back, TheCrew07 posted one of his excellent division-rival prospect updates on the Reds' Tony Cingrani. Cingrani had recently turned in his fourth consecutive 0 ER start, and TC07 prefaced the MiLB.com story with a note on the streak: "My goodness, when will it end?" Well, the answer to that question turned out to be... tonight!

The Stars put together two 2B, a 3B, two BBs, and two HRs from the 4th through the 6th innings. They hung two ER on Cingrani in each of those three innings before a Hunter Morris 2-R HR chased him with one out in the 6th. He finished having allowed 6 ER on 6 H in 5.1 IP. I haven't looked back through his career game logs, but with Cingrani's career MiLB ERA of 1.66 -- yes, that includes tonight's outing -- I'm going to go out on a limb & say the Stars knocked the '11 3rd round pick around for one of his worst outings as a professional.

Morris's only hit was the HR, and he finished 1-4 with 2 RBI. Kentrail Davis kept up his hot July -- his OPS for the month is now all the way up to 1.012 -- 2-4 with a 2B.

Meanwhile... the 'other' K. Davis, Khris Davis has done absolutely nothing but hit & completely restore his prospect status this season. Kh. Davis had cruised through the system without much trouble -- all the way through A+ Brevard County last season. After he was promoted to Huntsville last season, however, he scuffled to the tune of a .603 OPS over 124 AB. I have to admit that I was one who'd forgotten about him a little bit, or written him off somewhat. But Khris Davis isn't having any of that -- his OPS so far at Huntsville this season is 1.013. He finished tonight 2-4, with a single and a 2-R HR that opened the scoring. Nice to see "Kh." get back on track -- keep raking, kid!

Scooter Gennett was 1-4 with a 2B, and scored on Khris Davis's HR. Josh Prince also went 1-4, with his lone hit being a two-out, two-RBI 3B in the 5th. Hainley Statia was 0-2 with 2 BB; Anderson De La Rosa finished 1-3 with a BB.

Huntsville PbP

Since Mr. Burgos kept the Pensacola bats quiet for basically the whole game, let's look at the Stars taking it to Cingrani. In each of the three run-scoring innings, they were able to come up with a huge XBH:

Huntsville Top of the 4th

-Josh Prince pops out to second baseman Brodie Greene.

-Tommy Manzella strikes out swinging.

-Scooter Gennett doubles (25) on a line drive to right fielder Josh Fellhauer.

-Khris Davis homers (5) on a fly ball to right field. Scooter Gennett scores.

-Hunter Morris flies out to left fielder Donald Lutz.

Huntsville Top of the 5th

-Hainley Statia walks.

-With Kentrail Davis batting, Hainley Statia picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Tony Cingrani to first baseman Beau Mills to shortstop Billy Hamilton.

-Kentrail Davis doubles (16) on a line drive to right fielder Josh Fellhauer.

-Anderson De La Rosa walks.

-Hiram Burgos bunt pops out to pitcher Tony Cingrani.

-Josh Prince triples (3) on a line drive to right fielder Josh Fellhauer. Kentrail Davis scores. Anderson De La Rosa scores.

-Tommy Manzella flies out to left fielder Donald Lutz.

Huntsville Top of the 6th

-Scooter Gennett grounds out sharply to first baseman Beau Mills.

-Khris Davis singles on a line drive to left fielder Donald Lutz.

-Hunter Morris homers (16) on a fly ball to right field. Khris Davis scores.

-Pitching Change: Brian Pearl replaces Tony Cingrani, batting 9th.

-Hainley Statia strikes out swinging.

-Kentrail Davis singles on a ground ball to shortstop Billy Hamilton.

-With Anderson De La Rosa batting, Kentrail Davis caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Tucker Barnhart to second baseman Brodie Greene.

Final: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Braves 4

DSL Brewers Box Score

The extremely interesting Jorge Ortega was your starting pitcher today and while he wasn't dominant, he didn't struggle either, it was just one of those starts kind of right in the middle. He went 5 innings allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, on 8 hits and 1 walk with just 1 strike out. Marcos Padilla walked 3 and struck out 1 in .2 innings, Melvin Tejada allowed a run on 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 3 over 2 innings, Junior Flores pitched the final 1.1 scoreless to close it out.

The youngsters pounded out 11 hits but didn't manage a single XBH. Francisco Castillo (2-4,SB), Juan De Leon (2-4), and Raphachel Colatosti (2-4) posted the multi-hit games. An aside, but for some reason I just cannot spell Colatosti's name right and always end up cutting and pasting it... Carlos Belonis returned and made an appearance as a PR, stole his 20th base, and scored a run. Juan Ortiz stole his 12 base and Alejandro Mendoza stole his his 7th base but was caught stealing for the 6th time. He hasn't really been caught stealing that many times, he's been picked off quite a bit. I guess I understand the logic of crediting the the pitcher with a pickoff and the runner with a caught stealing, it's still an out on the bases.

Carlos Pena singled in the 2nd and then was lifted defensively at the start of the 3rd, something to keep an eye on. His replacement Natanael Mejia has struggled defensively as he has 4 errors and 4 passed balls in very limited action, including 1 of each in this game, but Mejia has been productive at the plate in those limited opportunities.
