Marcum question

Sounds like Marcum is doing a bullpen session Tuesday. Obviously, there is not enough time for him to do a rehab and get traded right now but how does the waiver trade process work? Would Marcum be a good candidate for that?

If he's put on waivers a team can claim him. If a team claims him the Brewers can only work out a trade with that team, they can keep him or they can let him go for nothing (like Alex Rios going from Toronto to Chicago). If he clears waivers (unlikely, some contender would claim him) he could then be traded to any team.

So what do you think the likelihood a guy like Marcum could be trade happens to be? Would a team chasing for a Wild Card spot be willing to give up a decent prospect for him? If I remember correctly what often happens is a team blocks someone else from being able to get the guy by putting in a claim for him right?

if they trade greinke, they probably should keep Marcum. he doesnt have much trade value after missing this much time for shoulder/elbow issues. let him pitch out the rest of the year, offer him a contract/qualifying offer if he qualifies as Type A, and see what happens. just because they didnt offer to extend him this past winter, doesnt mean they wont this winter, especially if they lose Greinke and (hopefully) cut ties with Wolf

I was under the impression he was not going to be a Type A so that is why I thought a trade was our only chance of getting anything in return. I really dont understand the new CBA

I take it back, he wouldnt be a Type A, because thats no longer used. the brewres just have to offer him the salary of $12.5 mil, or the avg of the top 125 contracts, within 5 days of conclusion of the world series. if he turns it down and signs elsewhere, THEN the brewers get a comp pick, and the signing team loses their 1st rd pick.

That isnt a terrible option. Either we have a solid pitcher to help keep the rotation together after Zach and Randy leave or we get another early draft pick. I still am disappointed he got hurt because I think his return would have been really good. If you look at what Dempster brought back there is no reason to think Marcum would not have brought close to that. Dempster has a better ERA and WHIP but Marcum was really solid pre-injury as well.

This is really shaping up to be another K-Rod situation. I hope that the Brewers learned their lesson and don't end up giving Marcum $12.5 million next season. I wouldn't mind looking into bringing him back, but unless he pitches like a Cy Young candidate down the stretch, I wouldn't give him anywhere near that salary, especially since I don't buy the 'discomfort throwing' thing... what's he been out for like six weeks? I have to think that there is something, maybe even something minor, structurally wrong with his arm. As for Marcum, of course he's going to try to gut it out for the rest of the season, it's a contract year and there are millions at stake for him.

IF he checks out as healthy 12.5 million is not bad at all for one year of Marcum. Edwin Jackson got 11 million for one year this year and his number are not as good as Marcum's over the past few years. You get him for one year so the risk is very low. If he pitches well you have a great trade candidate as well. Comparing him to KRod is not right. KRod just wasnt very good last year and got starters money as an 8th inning guy. Marcum is a top half of the league starter. No comparison

Agreed. The "if he checks out as healthy" is very important. No way do we make a qualifying offer if there's any sign he's not healthy.

If he is healthy, Melvin should have a good read on things. Marcum is rumored to have shown some willingness to sign a one-year deal with the Brewers, so Melvin ought to know what dollar amount they're looking at. If he's thinking <$12.5MM, then obviously we wouldn't make the qualifying offer, as he'd just accept that. But like jjfanec said, I don't think a one-year, $12.5MM contract is terrible for a healthy Marcum, who has been a really good pitcher since recovering from his TJ surgery.

thing is, brewers arent making the world series, so they'll have all of october to have marcum checked up and worked on before they have to make the decision in the 5-day window after the final game of the world series. marcum will then have 7 days from the day the arb offer is given to decide. so at most, the brewers will have to wait 12 days to find out if he's taking the money or not.

If Greinke's gone, next year's rotation for sure has

Gallardo,

Estrada,

Fiers.

Narveson's a possibility, too, but a BIG question mark. With enough other good starters available, it may be much more helpful to have Estrada back in the BP.

I like what Thornburg & some of the other prospects might add, but for losing Greinke, I'd much rather keep a guy of Marcum's caliber even if he's maybe more of a 2-3 starter than a 1. So I'd buy out Wolf & pay Marcum IF Marcum's in good health & still productive through September than pay Wolf OR go hunting for another FA starter OR expect the rotation to be filled with too many young guys. (Admittedly, the years of Baker/Slowey/Blackburn/Liriano rotations of the Twins are too close to the fore of my thinking!)
