Hanley Ramirez

Recommended Posts

Maybe if the price is low, but it would have to be pretty low. He's due $31.5 million over the next two seasons, he has sharply declined over the last two seasons, and he's a head case.

No thanks, what would be the point? If the Brewer's were contending and needed a SS to make a deep run than maybe, but this year no way.

Why? It is not like Hanley would just be a rental you would be getting Hanley for the next two years and he could easily be put back at the SS position. For a total of about $33m dollars for 2013 and 2014 that is not a bad deal. The Brewers would have to think about extending Hanley after his current contract is done and if they could lock Hanley down for about $17-19m a year that would be a nice punch in the lineup with Braun and Hanley for the next 5-8 years.

The way Hanley has been playing the last two seasons, there is no way I would want to commit $17-$19 million to him per year for several years, and that's after paying him $33 million for the next two.

Hanley hitting in Miller Park could easily get 35 HR's a season. The problem is that Hanley hitting in Miller Park could easily get 35 HR's a season. And bat .254 with a .320 OBP, i.e. he's lost his plate discipline and become a guy who just swings for the fences. He is also no longer a guy who can steal 50 bases a season. And he's a head-case

Back when he hit .300+ with speed on the bases and a .380 OBP along with some HR power and a plus glove he was looking like a legit potential Hall of Famer

High ceilings are tempting, but it would sure be a big role of the dice at that price. Maybe if we had Ted Williams as a batting coach

Yes 35 HR's and a .254 BA is an improvement over what we have at SS, but is it worth $17 million a year?

Coming back from my sabbatical just like some other posters after the password switchover.......a player like Ervin Santana has negative value because of his past inconsistency and with a 6 ERA and giving up 23 homers.....he just is a mechanical mess right now. However Hanley Ramirez is someone whose travails are mental I believe and who would do well to get out of Miami.....he is a guy that, while not defensively gifted, could transform our shortstop position for many years to come if he could get back to his .900 OPS ways, which I think he could very easily do given a different environment. Ramirez in front of Braun has the potential to be insane, and while the trade value out would be significant, the Marlins would definitely be selling low.....the monetary value would have to be mitigated in some way of course, but it can be done. This would be a risky move and those would not do it have a very solid argument, but to me the risk is close to the value of doing it, at the very least.

So, are you willing to gut the farm system again, AND pay him that kind of dough?

I would have to pass.

And you're already privy to the asking price of the Marlins and that they wouldn't pay a part, if not a significant part of that salary given his last season and a half, or ask for very little in return?

This "gut," the farm system nonsense. There are no sure bets to gut. There are maybe's, no top 5 prospects. So I don't know what you think they'd demand in return at this point or what "gutting," would consist of, but it's definitely overused.

Of course none of us know what the Marlins would want for Ramirez. If all they wanted was some nobody prospect and they were going to pay a bunch of his salary then sure, most of us would want to make the trade. But we have a feeling they will value him like the player he was a few years ago and would want a lot for him. Hell, I wouldn't want him if all the Brewers had to do was pay his salary.

There was some talk last week about a red sox- marlins trade that had hanley and heath bell going to Boston for Crawford and a high level prospect. I doubt wed get hanley for a nobody, let alone have Miami pay a bunch of the salary.
