Friday's Daily Menu: TGIF!

All times are Central

Nashville: RHP Wily Peralta at New Orleans (Marlins), 6:45 PM pre-game, 7:00 gametime

Free Live Audio Link

Jeff Hem is the new play-by-play voice of the Sounds; follow him on Twitter @jeffhempbp; we'll link to his blog updates at On the Air…and Off

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; all Nashville games, home and away, will be available to watch via MiLB.TV's $39.99 season-long package ($9.99 to pay for a single month). We imagine the audio feed is from the home team. All MiLB.TV details available at the link.

**********

Huntsville: RHP Evan Anundsen at Jackson (Mariners), 6:50 PM pre-game, 7:05 gametime

Free Live Audio Link -- Select the Huntsville feed from the MiLB main audio page

Alex Cohen is the new play-by-play voice of the Stars; follow him on Twitter @alexmcohen. It's fantastic that Huntsville is returning to what will be a traditional broadcast format this year. All games, home and away, are scheduled to be broadcast.

MiLB.TV subsciption note: Huntsville road games in four locales (Mississippi, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Pensacola) will be broadcast.

**********

Brevard County: RHP Brandon Williamson at home vs. Palm Beach (Mets), 5:35 PM gametime

Free Live Audio Link -- Select the Palm Beach feed from the MiLB main audio page

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

**********

Wisconsin: RHP Chad Pierce at home vs. Great Lakes (Dodgers), 6:45 PM pre-game, 7:05 gametime

Free Live Audio Link - 1280 AM WNAM

Chris Mehring is back to do his customary fantastic work as the Voice of the Rattlers. Follow him on Twitter @CMehring; we'll link to Chris' infamous blog often -- Rattler Radio.

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; Wisconsin is one of only two (Great Lakes) Midwest League clubs that have all their home games available via MiLB.TV; Chris' call provides the audio. So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and Stars' road games from four Southern League locales, plus one July Helena series (11th-13th).

**********

Helena: RHP Tyler Wagner at home vs. Idaho Falls (Royals), 7:50 PM pre-game, 8:05 gametime

Free Live Audio Link -- Select the Helena feed from the MiLB main audio page

We're lucky to have Steve Wendt back on board for another H-Crew season.

**********

Arizona Rookie (Maryvale): First, it's the completion of the 4th of July suspended game at home vs. the Indians' kids (the A-Crew trails 3-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Brewers have a man on 2nd with two out -- it was linked here in the earlier Report). We believe that will be played to its full nine-inning completion, and then followed by a seven-inning nightcap; approx. 8:00 PM gametime; never audio for games in this league

As I noted in the 'Help the LR live on' thread, I will miss tonight's & tomorrow night's Huntsville games, as I'm out of town to celebrate my grandpa's 90th b-day.

I got you bro.

BA's Hot Sheet

No. 3 JAVIER BAEZ, SS

CUBS

Team: Low Class A Peoria (Midwest)

Age: 19

Why He's Here: .500/.519/1.042 (12-for-24), 2 HR, 2 3B, 3 2B, 7 RBIs, 4 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3-for-5 SB

The Scoop: The Cubs held Baez back in extended spring training until Memorial Day weekend, in part because they didn't want to subject the ninth overall pick in last year's draft to the harsh early-season weather of the Midwest League. The approach has paid off so far. After crushing seven extra-base hits in six games this week, Baez is batting .338/.397/.605 with nine homers through 157 at-bats with Peoria, and his 1.002 OPS ranks second in the MWL since he joined the league on May 28..

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Corky Miller, c, Reds: A nonndrafted free agent signed out of Nevada in 1998, Miller has made quite the career for himself as a third catcher. Neither Miller's bat nor glove is good enough for him to be a major league regular, but he is reliable enough that teams like to have him in Triple-A, knowing he can serve a fill-in with the big league club for a few weeks if needed. Miller, 36, has not played in more than 40 big league games in any season, but he has made it up to the majors in 11 different seasons. This week was a good one for Miller offensively, as he hit .500/.571/1.083 with two home runs in 12 at-bats for Triple-A Louisville.

NOT-SO HOT SHEET

Jed Bradley, lhp, Brewers: Bradley performed as expected for a college first-rounder in five April starts, dominating the Florida State League with a 4.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 2.79 ERA, including 19 consecutive scoreless innings. In 12 starts since, the 22-year old has walked 29 and struck out 30, posting a 6.03 ERA. This stretch was punctuated by Bradley's Wednesday start, when he allowed a season-high seven runs and four walks in four and two-thirds. The 6-foot-6 Bradley has battled mechanical issues, and his velocity has dipped to 88-91 mph.

Hot Sheet Chat 7/20/2012

Ben (Miamisburg, OH): Did Dan Corcino get consideration for the hot sheet? He's leading the Southern league in ERA amongst qualified pitchers as a 21 year old and his ERA is just over 2 since June 1st. Is he still the Reds best pitching prospect, or has Tony Cingrani and Robert Stephenson's stellar performance this year made that questionable?

J.J. Cooper: Corcino was No. 1 on the Hot Sheet a couple of weeks ago. His one outing this week was nice, but not one that would get you on the Hot Sheet. At this moment I'd still say he's the Reds' top pitching prospect, but it's really, really close. You can probably find scouts who like Cingrani or Stephenson better.

denis (marshall): Whats ur take on Yorman Rodriguez now? Seems to be getting his act together and flashing those serious tools.

J.J. Cooper: Sorry I'm not getting too excited about him yet. He'll go into 2013 still having yet to play 100 games in a season and with plenty of question marks about his defense, his hitting approach and his makeup. It's definitely a sign of some progress, but 25 good games in Dayton doesn't erase the fact that he was demoted from high Class A Bakersfield after an awful 23 games there.

Al (NYC): If you were running the Cubs, do you let Baez prove he cannot stay at SS before moving him off....or do you move him to 3B (or another position) now to get him as many reps there as possible? What are the reports on him defensively thus far in the MWL? Positive, negative or indifferent?

J.J. Cooper: Keep him at shortstop. It's not hard for a shortstop to learn how to play third base, in fact that's one of the easier transitions there is. If he eventually surprises everyone and sticks at shortstop, he's even more valuable. If not, you didn't lose anything by sticking him there til he proved you needed to move him.

josh (Texas): What kind of return do you believe the Padres could get form the Pirates for Chase Headley? Maybe a combo of Taillon and Marte? Sounds good for 2 1/2 years, right?

J.J. Cooper: I think that's what they'd ask for, but if I'm the Pirates that seems a little steeper than what I'd be looking to pay.

Chris (Charlotte NC): Shelby Miller has obviously struggled in tripple A, and it appears it has mainly been with his secondary stuff (curveball primarily). Why are people so quickly dimishing his top 30 prospect status?

J.J. Cooper: He's No. 20 on our list. Bad first-half, but not willing to give up on him in any way.

Jason (Austin): Do you think Baez is a 30/30 type guy in the majors? Also what are the chances he sticks at SS? What is a realistic ETA for cubs fans late 2014 early 2015?

J.J. Cooper: No. He's not a 30 steal guy in the big leagues. You're getting way too excited about a non-speedy guy who is an aggressive runner stealing bases against low Class A pitchers and catchers. He's an average runner who knows how to swipe a bag when a pitcher is slow to the plate.

JF (Nocal): How fast can you see Baez moving with his premium bat? Will his defense be the thing holding him back for a few years?

J.J. Cooper: I don't think the glove will really hold him back. If he keeps hitting like he's hit, the Cubs are likely to move him up as his bat shows it's ready for the next level. If at some point that means he has to move to an easier position defensively, they'll likely make that move as well.

Mick (Cali): Billy Hamilton seems to be adjusting well to AA. What is his ETA and at what position?

J.J. Cooper: Just saw the news that a defensive indifference last night was changed to a stolen base for Hamilton, which gives him 111. He seems to be handling the jump to Double-A fine but I do see a lot of Tweets from Reds' fans that speak as if Hamilton is an injury away from fixing the Reds' leadoff troubles. I don't think there is anyway that Hamilton is ready to help the big league team at the plate this year and even early 2013 would likely be too soon. Now I do think he could do a lot to help the big league club as a September callup who might even be a useful 25th man on a playoff roster, but his value would be as the best basestealer in the majors the day he arrives. As far as position, I think he ends up as the Reds' center fielder, but as I've said before, I see no problem with keeping him at shortstop for now.

Ben (Miamisburg, OH): Who do you like better: Straily or Cingrani?

J.J. Cooper: Straily.

Keith Law on the Maryvale Brewers:

• Milwaukee Brewers: This is the least talented team I've seen out here, although they were hurt by the fast (and merited) promotion of Tyrone Taylor. Clint Coulter has a very quick bat but right now isn't driving the ball, just swinging for contact. Jose Pena has some trouble picking up breaking balls, especially down and out of the zone, but he's got very quick wrists and the ball really comes off his bat well when he squares one up, with the potential to hit for both average and power.

Ouch.

Brevard's winning streak halted

07/20/2012 11:00 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Williamson allowed two runs in five innings of work, but was saddled with his seventh loss of the season on Friday night. Brevard County had its four-game winning streak snapped as they fell 5-2 to the Palm Beach Cardinals. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had their current winning streak halted at four games as they were defeated 5-2 by the Palm Beach Cardinals on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

After allowing at least four earned runs in his last three starts, Brevard starter Brandon Williamson (2-7, 6.71) had a solid outing as he allowed just two runs in five innings of work. He yielded six hits, while walking three and striking out three.

Palm Beach did jump on Williamson early in the first as Starlin Rodriguez reached on a one-out double and came home three batters later, on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Alan Ahmady. The other run that Williamson allowed came in the fourth inning on a solo homer from Geoffrey Klein that gave the Cards a 2-0 lead.

The Manatees (16-12 second half, 45-51 overall) were having trouble figuring out Palm Beach (14-15, 45-51) starter Kyle Hald, who was making his first start in the Florida State League. Hald fanned eight Manatee hitters and scattered four hits in seven innings.

Brevard County was finally able to get on the board against Hald and the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth. John Dishon doubled to right with one out and would steal third. Shea Vucinich would drive him home with a double of his own as the 'Tees cut the Palm Beach's lead to 2-1.

After striking out the Cardinals in order in the sixth, Seth Harvey ran into trouble in the seventh and it started with a lead-off walk to Mike O'Neill. Harvey was able to get Rodriguez to ground into a 5-4-3 double play and looked like he would get out of the inning unscathed.

However, Harvey would walk James Ramsey and then hit Chris Edmondson with a pitch. The bases would then be loaded after another walk to Alan Ahmady. Tommy Toledo came in for Harvey and on his second pitch the bases cleared on a triple to the right field corner from Cody Stanley as the Cards took a 5-1 lead.

The game remained 5-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Manatees wouldn't go down without a fight. Vucinich would lead off the inning by reaching on an error by the third baseman Ahmady. Jason Rogers then ripped a single back up the middle to put runners on the corners with no outs and the potential tying run on deck.

Brock Kjeldgaard then struck out looking and Cody Hawn hit a flare into shallow center, but the center fielder Ramsey was able to make the play as the 'Tees were down to their final out. Reggie Keen though would extend the game with a RBI single as the tying run stepped to the plate.

The tying run at the dish was Joey Paciorek, but he was unable to extend the rally for Brevard as he struck out swinging to end the game. On the night, the 'Tees struck out 11 times against Palm Beach pitching.

The Manatees will look to get back on track beginning at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday night in the third game of their four-game series with the Cardinals.

Taylor Jungmann (7-5, 3.59) will take the mound for Brevard as he looks to continue his hot second half. The 12th overall pick of the 2011 draft is 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts so far in the second half of the season. Palm Beach will counter with Scott Schneider (1-1, 4.28).

Box Score

Check out opposing pitcher Kyle Hald's mug. I truly wish he was on our side. The stats back up the face.

Kyle Hald

The BC hitters could not figure out Hald. 6 hits and no walks for the Manatees.

The offensive slumber wasted Brandon Williamson's best effort since June 22nd. 2 ER in 5 IP. The overall line was pretty unattractive. Seth Harvey and Tommy Toledo combined to surrender the big 7th inning, though Toledo's line ended up decent. If you don't follow Tommy on twitter, then you are not someone who has wondered what kind of debauchery him and Axford would get into if they were in the same bullpen.

Cardinals 2012 1st rounder James Ramsey went 1-1 with 4 BB and has an .800+ OPS in the FSL. I feel like punishing the readers tonight.

Game Log

Harvey got shelled in the 7th, but this was nice.

Palm Beach Top of the 6th

Pitching Change: Seth Harvey replaces Brandon Williamson.

Geoffrey Klein called out on strikes.

Nicholas Longmire strikes out swinging.

Ronny Gil strikes out swinging.

Helena 5 Idaho Falls (Royals) 2

Box Score

Chris McFarland is one of only 14 PL hitters with at least 50 TB's at this point. He socked a homer tonight in the 1st after Tyrone Taylor boarded with a BB. Alfredo Rodriguez (3-3 3 2B) was seeing things clearly and Yonki Hernandez (2-3) socked a couple of hits as well.

4th round pick Tyler Wagner got the start and he worked his ERA back below 9.00. 8 outs 3 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 3 K 1 HR 3:1 GO:FO. Wagner's arsenal reminds me somewhat of Matt Miller's. Brent Suter finished the final 6 innings in fine, fine fashion. 18 outs 6 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 6 K 7:1 GO:FO.

Michael Reed chucked out a guy at 3B.

Game Log

Suter retired 14 in a row before the error. But then he picked that guy off. He walked the first guy up in the next inning.

Brewers 18 Indians 3

Box Score

Deivi Mejia, who once was a castoff of the Colorado Rockies and who hasn't played in 2 weeks, got the start in both games played today. In G1, he took Tyrone Taylor's spot in the lineup and went off. 5-5 3 R 2B 3B HR 8 RBI. That is a cycle for those who knocked a few too many back this evening.

There were many in supporting roles in this one. Clint Coulter (2-4 BB SB), Jose Pena (1-5 2B), Jose Sermo (2-4 BB SB), Alan Sharkey (2-4 BB), Angel Ortega (1-4 BB) and Dionis Hinojosa (1-3 2 BB) all were pestering the base paths.

For those who crave good news, Clint Coulter is hitting .361/.510/.361 over his last 10 games.

Maverick Lasker amazingly started both games that were completed today. Juan Francisco technically took this one over when it resumed and he excelled. 4 IP 4 H 0 R 0 BB 3 K 3:4 GO:FO for Juan. Jono Armold (30th round, college) and Alejandro Lavandero (9th round, HS) both saw action in relief and neither allowed a run.
