'Tees rally to win twin bill opener

07/17/2012 11:28 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees rallied in the top of the seventh inning and held on to defeat the St. Lucie Mets, 6-5 on Tuesday night in the first game of a doubleheader at Digital Domain Park.

Down 3-2 heading into the seventh inning, Brevard County's (13-11 second half, 42-50 overall) rally started with a one-out walk drawn by Mike Walker. Walker was lifted for a pinch runner in the form of Franklin Romero Jr. After Brock Kjeldgaard walked, St. Lucie (11-14, 60-33) made a pitching change and brought in Jeffrey Walters.

The first batter that Walters faced was Hector Gomez and Gomez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Shea Vucinich would put the 'Tees ahead 4-3 as he doubled to left field to plate Romero Jr. and Kjeldgaard.

Joey Paciorek would then strikeout but reached first on a wild pitch third strike that also allowed Gomez to score and give Brevard a 5-3 lead. John Dishon would close out the scoring for the 'Tees in the seventh as he drove in Vucinich on a groundout as the Manatees took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Casey Medlen came in to shut the door but ran into trouble early as he walked Daniel Muno and hit Alonzo Harris with a pitch to lead off the inning. After retiring T.J. Rivera, the Mets were right back in the game thanks to a double from Mike Baxter that cleared the bases and made it just a 6-5 Brevard County lead.

Medlen then walked Cory Vaughn as the winning run was now on base for the Mets. St. Lucie though would not complete the rally as Aderlin Rodriguez grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the game.

Drew Gagnon (0-0, 3.04) got the start for the 'Tees and he went five innings, while allowing three runs on seven hits. Those three runs came in the second inning as the Mets sent seven hitters to the plate in the frame. Tommy Toledo earned the win out of the bullpen as he threw a scoreless sixth inning.

Walker cut St. Lucie's lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a two-out, two-run homer, his seventh of the season. The Manatees were out hit 8-3 by the Mets, but all of Brevard County's hits went for extra bases.

Brevard blanks St. Lucie to sweep double dip

07/17/2012 11:33 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A sacrifice fly from Reggie Keen in the third inning was all that the Brevard County Manatees needed as they shutout the St. Lucie Mets, 1-0 in the second game of a twin bill on Tuesday night at Digital Domain Park. The victory gave the 'Tees their second doubleheader sweep in the last four days.

Eric Marzec (1-2, 3.03) started on the hill for Brevard (14-11 second half, 43-50 overall) and struck out a career-high six hitters in four scoreless innings of work. St. Lucie (11-15, 60-34) starter Rafael Montero was just as impressive as he fanned ten Manatee hitters in six innings.

Despite Montero's ten strikeouts, the 'Tees were able to string together the only run of the game in the third. Brent Dean led the inning off with a single to center and two batters later Nick Shaw singled to right to put runners on the corners with one out. Keen lifted a fly ball to center, which was deep enough to allow Dean to score.

Seth Harvey earned the win in relief as he threw 1.1 scoreless innings. St. Lucie did make things interesting in the bottom of the sixth as Daniel Muno singled with one out off of Harvey and then Mike Baxter walked to put two on.

Greg Holle relieved Harvey and walked the first batter he faced as Cory Vaughn reached to load the bases. Holle would get out of the jam thanks to two infield fly outs.

Brevard County and St. Lucie will close out their four-game set on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. as the Manatees will try and take three of four from the Florida State League first half South Division champions.

Sounds Suffer Extra-Inning Loss To Express, 5-4

Brian Baker Strikes Out Career High Nine In No-Decision

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Round Rock Express hit three consecutive two-out singles in the 11th inning to hand the Nashville Sounds a 5-4 defeat on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series.

The Express scored two runs in the ninth to force the game to extras and later won the game thanks to three straight hits from Joey Butler, Tommy Mendonca, and Luis Hernandez off Amaury Rivas (4-6).

It was the eighth extra-inning contest of the season and first since May 28 for the Sounds, who moved to 4-4 in extra-inning play. Nashville has blown a save in its last two losses and has held the lead in seven of its last night defeats overall.

Nashville starter Brian Baker pitched seven strong innings as the Nashville Sounds handed the Round Rock Express a 4-2 loss

In his first start since rejoining the Sounds, Nashville starter Brian Baker allowed two runs on four hits in his seven innings of work while striking out nine Express batters, which set a new career high and matched the most by a Sounds starter this season.

Baker has now compiled a 1.47 ERA (3er/18.1) in his last four PCL outings (three starts) and picked up his last two victories against the Express.

Outfielder Corey Patterson (2-for-3) tripled while scoring and driving in a run. Outfielder Caleb Gindl also added two hits and a double.

Round Rock took an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame as leadoff hitter Julio Borbon singled, stole second base, and scored on a hustle play. Former Vanderbilt star Matt Kata grounded out to first base, as Boron continued to run through third and slide under the tag of catcher Jason Jaramillo.

Nashville knotted the contest in the bottom of the second inning. Outfielder Corey Patterson lined a two-out triple down the first base line and scored on the ensuing play as Round Rock starter Greg Reynolds committed a balk during the bat with Jordan Brown.

Nashville went ahead at 2-1 in the fourth with consecutive doubles from outfielder Caleb Gindl and Taylor Green.

AUDIO: Taylor Green RBI Double

The Sounds added two more runs for a 4-1 advantage in the home half of the sixth. After a couple of one-out walks by Express starter Greg Reynolds, Patterson lined a single into right field, followed by a sacrifice fly by Brown.

Former Sound Brad Nelson cut the Nashville lead in half with his 14th homer of the season, a solo shot to left to lead off the seventh inning.

Round Rock scored two late runs to tie the game at 4-4 in the ninth off reliever Mike McClendon, who walked Greg Miclat to leadoff the frame. Miclat moved to third on a Kata single and scored the first run as Nelson grounded out to second. Kata then came home to score the tying run from second base on a throwing error from Green.

The Sounds threatened in the 10th inning, but came up empty as Schafer led off with an infield single and moved to second on an Eric Farris sacrifice. On the ensuing play, Gindl smacked a line drive to center, but Schafer was thrown out at home plate, attempting to go high on the catcher while being tagged out.

Donovan Hand pitched a scoreless inning. McClendon gave up two runs in a 1/3 of an inning for the blown save. Juan Perez walked two and struck out three while stranding both inherited runners in two innings.

Amaury Rivas scattered three hits for a run in 2/3 of an inning.

Reynolds gave up four runs on in six innings in a no-decision. Neal Cotts (1-1) picked up the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Sounds and Express continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Wednesday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Seth McClung (2-11, 5.60) takes the mound against Round Rock Chad Bell (2-2, 3.47).

Before I start, is there any tastier homemade treat than cookies fresh out of the oven? Maybe I'm nostalgic, but I love that smell and taste going all the way back to my childhood. I've had boxes of cookie dough in the freezer since our fundraiser last season and it occurred to me recently that I should actually work to get rid of them before I buy more again next month. Cookies for the win!

Unfortunately the Sounds didn't win, and they made some very curious plays late in the game that cost them. Brian Baker has been really good over his last 4 appearances, if he can keep it going maybe both Baker and Sanchez can be in the mix for bullpen spots next season. Amaury Rivas... *sigh* what the hell dude? His ERA as a reliever should be in low 3s at worst, he's pitching worse out of the pen than he did as a starter. Is his confidence just gone?

The curious plays I was speaking of...in the 7th Baker has Nelson down either 0-2 or 1-2 and then grooves a pitch so Brad can hit a HR. Then Taylor Green fields a routine grounder in the 9th, looks the runner back to second, apparently hurries the throw short hopping Jordan Brown who isn't able to dig it out. In the bottom of the inning on the play described above when Logan Schafer gets thrown out at the plate... he waits for the ball to go through before advancing so he's already lost a couple of steps, he's waved home anyway, the throw beats him, and he just tries to run through the tag? He was the game winning run and didn't try to bury the catcher or slide around the tag? The last 4 innings of this game were frustrating to say the least.

In case you're wondering Jeff mentioned that Jim Henderson wasn't available to close it out after pitching back to back to days.

Birmingham 12, @Huntsville 4 (Game 2, 7 innings)

Huntsville Box

Well, did everyone enjoy that sunshine-and-puppies lovely game 1 recap? Good. Great. Now strap in, A Clockwork Orange-style -- no looking away... although that might actually be the best approach for this one.

Adam Weisenburger only got two plate appearances, but he made them count: 1-1, HR, RBI, BB. Scooter Gennett went 1-1 with a 2B, RBI, and 2 BB. Hunter Morris doubled again (*yawn*), finishing 1-4 with one RBI. Hainley Statia was 1-3 with one RBI. Kentrail Davis apparently burned all his hits for this doubleheader in the first game, finishing 0-2 with a BB and one CS.

The pitching tonight was, in a phrase, not pretty. Reliever Darren Byrd was the only Huntsville hurler who didn't allow a run, and the 5th inning was the only frame he worked. Starter Daniel Meadows only lasted 2 IP, and it took a Lee Haydel OF assist at 2B to get Meadows out of the second. Kyle Heckathorn retired the first two batters in the 3rd, but three consecutive groundball singles by Birmingham plated a run. In his second inning of work, Heckathorn was able to work around a leadoff HBP and keep the Barons off the scoreboard.

Dan Merklinger relieved Heckathorn, and retired three of the four batters he faced in the 6th... the only problem being that the baserunner he allowed was a solo HR. The Stars were able to rally back, with three runs in their half of the frame to close the deficit to 6-4 heading into the 7th. Unfortunately, Merklinger started off the 7th by allowing walk-walk-SB-walk, before giving way to Philippe Valiquette. Valiquette allowed all three inherited runners to score, along with 3 ER of his own, before the dust had settled in the top half of the 7th. So just like that, the Stars' comeback bid had the rug pulled right out from underneath it.

For the series, Birmingham took three of four from the Stars, and did so in pretty convincing fashion... outscoring Huntsville 41-20.

Huntsville PbP

Here's Huntsville's three-run 6th inning rally. Birmingham got two of the outs in the inning on the basepaths -- a nice OF relay to steal an out at the plate, and then Statia appears to have gotten into a rundown for the third out of the inning after (or as part of) singling home Morris:

- Huntsville Bottom of the 6th

-Adam Weisenburger walks.

-Lee Haydel walks. Adam Weisenburger to 2nd.

-Josh Prince strikes out swinging.

-Scooter Gennett doubles (23) on a fly ball to right fielder Jared Mitchell. Adam Weisenburger scores. Lee Haydel out at home on the throw, right fielder Jared Mitchell to second baseman Erik Morrison to catcher Damaso Espino. Scooter Gennett to 3rd on the throw.

-Hunter Morris doubles (31) on a fly ball to right fielder Jared Mitchell. Scooter Gennett scores.

-Pitcher Change: Ryan Kussmaul replaces Cameron Bayne.

-Hainley Statia singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jared Mitchell. Hunter Morris scores. Hainley Statia out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder Jared Mitchell to first baseman Seth Loman to shortstop Tyler Saladino to second baseman Erik Morrison.

If you're really feeling like a glutton for punishment, go ahead & click through to take a look at the 7th inning. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Brewers 14 Diamondbacks 3

Box Score

Okay, everyone can sift through this bute on their own. My plan is to highlight some of the stars of the night and season. First, the biggest bat for Maryvale has been Jose Pena. He strikes out about 20% of the time and he won't take a walk, but about half of his hits have been extra base hits. I wonder if it might be a good idea to swap Ruben Ozuna and Pena?

Malcom Dowell was a complete unknown when he was drafted. He comes from football country but left that sport behind for this one. Now 19, he is back for a 2nd tour in Maryvale. He has been encased in the 9-hole, but I hope he starts to see some time closer to the top of the order. The production speaks for itself.

Dustin Houle was the youngest player in last year's draft and about as raw as can be. I mentioned at the beginning of the season that I thought it was a great sign he was hitting in the middle of the order and I still believe that. Houle had 3 BB tonight and has shown an ability to control the zone even though not many are dropping right now. He has flashed some all right power as well. This is a 6-year project minimum, but the upside is there.

Clint Coulter had a big game. I just get this feeling that he is on the verge of exploding offensivly for about a week.

The pitchers were great all across rookie ball tonight. The primo-stud in this one was Jorge Lopez and my #8 prospect did not disappoint. He pitched the final 3 innings giving up 2 H 0 R 0 BB and 4 K. He is working those overall numbers back towards what we expected.

Again, be sure to see the box and log for even more info.
