Link Report for Sat. 7/14

Brewer Fanatic Staff

First, today we acknowledge the 1981 release of Saturday the 14th, (

) an admittedly weak comedy-horror spoof (because those always work), which hoped to piggyback somehow off the Friday the 13th movie craze of the day.

The movie did give us Kari Michaelsen, who went on play oldest sister Katie for four years on Gimme a Break!, for which my late teenage years were very grateful.

Anyway, a rare Link Report off-topic digression in honor of today's point on the calendar.

**********

Huntsville: RHP Evan Anundsen at home vs. Birmingham (White Sox), 6:28 PM pre-game, 6:43 gametime

Free Live Audio Link -- Select the Huntsville feed from the MiLB main audio page

Alex Cohen is the new play-by-play voice of the Stars; follow him on Twitter @alexmcohen. It's fantastic that Huntsville is returning to what will be a traditional broadcast format this year. All games, home and away, are scheduled to be broadcast.

MiLB.TV subsciption note: Huntsville road games in four locales (Mississippi, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Pensacola) will be broadcast.

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

**********

Wisconsin: RHP Chad Pierce at Fort Wayne (Padres), 5:45 PM pre-game, 6:05 gametime

So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and Stars' road games from four Southern League locales, plus one July Helena series (11th-13th).

**********

Helena: LHP Will West at Ogden (Dodgers), 7:45 PM pre-game, 8:00 gametime

Free Live Audio Link -- Select the Helena feed from the MiLB main audio page

We're lucky to have Steve Wendt back on board for another H-Crew season.

**********

Arizona Rookie (Maryvale): at the Rangers' complex in Surprise; 9:00 PM gametime; never audio for games in this league

**********

DSL Brewers: Idle for the All-Star break; the Dominican Summer League All-Star Game is Sunday (American League vs. National League); no word on which Brewers might take part, we'll probably learn when we see the box score

I want to thank the Appleton Post-Crescent and the Helena Independent Record for enforcing new tight limitations on page views.

Sigh...

What is this, free enterprise?

We'll get around it, but just something you should be aware of in terms of links to photo galleries and such...

So, correct me if I am wrong, but I have a six pack of games to cover tonight. Oh gawd, did someone just say six pack? Please, no booze talk. #DayAfterBachelorParty #LetsDoThis

Edit: the Nashville double header has been postponed. I guess I will just pass along the buck to next poor sap... ;)

Final: Wisconsin 3, Fort Wayne 4

TinCaps score two in ninth to beat Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were the victims of a walkoff loss for the second night in a row. The Fort Wayne TinCaps scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to spoil a very nice outing by Rattlers starting pitcher Chad Pierce for a 4-3 victory Saturday night at Parkview Field. Travis Jankowski, who had two RBI in the game, drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single.

The Rattlers (55-36 overall, 11-11 second half) rallied with two outs in the top of the first inning to grab a lead. Brandon Macias was hit by a pitch for the sixteenth time this season to get on with two away. Ben McMahan drilled a double to the gap in left-center to send Macias all the way home from first base for a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Mike Garza scored from third on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 2-1.

Fort Wayne (43-49, 12-10) got a run in the bottom of the second inning. Duanel Jones singled to start the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a fly out to right. An RBI grounder by Lee Orr got Jones home and cut the Wisconsin lead to a run.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning. Macias doubled to left-center and Max Walla raced home from first base for a 3-1 lead in the top of the frame. Fort Wayne came back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff double by Kyle Gaedele, a sacrifice bunt by Felix Cabrera, and a sacrifice fly by Jankowsi for their run.

After that, Pierce shutdown the TinCaps through the eighth inning. The Fond du Lac Wisconsin native pitched a professional high eight innings, struck out four and left the game with a 3-2 lead. He scattered five hits and walked two.

Kevin Shackelford, who tossed three scoreless innings and picked up a win on Wednesday at Lake County, came on to pitch the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Jones. Austin Hedges was next and his single to left put runners on the corners. Shackelford got ahead of Orr 0-2, but the TinCaps first baseman lined the next pitch through the middle of the diamond to drive Jones in with the tying run.

A sacrifice bunt by Gaedele moved the both runners into scoring position and Wisconsin responded with an intentional walk to load the bases to set up a double play. But, Jankowski smacked the first pitch of his at bat into right to knock in the game winning run.

Less than 24 hours earlier, the Timber Rattlers lost 7-6 in walkoff fashion in a 15 inning game at Lake County. The Timber Rattlers have won eight games on walkoff hits at home. But, including Saturday's game, opponents have eight walkoff wins over Wisconsin.

Game two of the series from Parkview Field is Sunday afternoon. David Goforth (5-4, 5.42) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cody Hebner (6-4, 4.42) is set to start for the TinCaps. Game time is 2:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:45pm.

WP: Daniel Cropper (4-1)

LP: Kevin Shackelford (2-4)

TIME: 2:37

ATTN: 7,411

Wisconsin Box Score

Another tough loss for the T-Rats. Great game by Chad Pierce. He was in line for the win, going 8 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits. The start was his longest of the year and he set down the last 7 batters he faced in order. But Kevin Shackelford came on to work the ninth and gave up the tying and winning runs, allowing four hits and a walk, while recording just one out.

Chadwin Stang was 3-5 to lead the offense. Stang has had multi-hit games in 5 of his last 10. Brandon Macias was 1-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. He was also hit by a pitch (again). Ben McMahan was 1-3 with a double a walk and an RBI. Michael Garza and Yadiel Rivera each had a single and Garza stole his first base since joining the Rattlers.

'Tees snap skid in twin bill opener

07/14/2012 10:00 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees knocked around the second overall pick of the 2010 draft Jameson Taillon, as they defeated the Bradenton Marauders 7-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday night at McKechnie Field.

The 'Tees (11-10 second half, 40-49 overall) scored six runs in 4.2 innings against Taillon, who gave up six hits and walked four. In his only other start against Brevard, the 2012 Futures Game participant allowed four runs in six innings of work to suffer the loss back on June 2.

Brevard County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single by Brock Kjeldgaard that plated Nick Shaw.

Manatees starting pitcher Brooks Hall (3-3, 4.07) got through the first two innings fine, before the Marauders (13-9, 42-50) plated three on Hall in the third. Hall allowed back-to-back lead-off singles before committing a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Gift Ngoepe that tied the game.

Hall then allowed back-to-back RBI singles to Mel Rojas and Alex Dickerson as Bradenton took a 3-1 lead. It could have gotten worse for Hall and the 'Tees but Carlos Paulino flew out to right and John Dishon gunned down Rojas at home for the double play.

Brevard answered right back in the fourth against Taillon as Hector Gomez led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Gomez then came home on a triple to right by Shea Vucinich which cut Bradenton's lead to 3-2. Joey Paciorek then grounded out to plate Vucinich and tie the game.

Dishon then came to the plate and reached on a bunt single to third. After a Reggie Keen fly out and with Nick Shaw batting, Dishon stole second and third and then came home on a RBI single by Shaw as the Manatees retook the lead 4-3.

The 'Tees would add two more against Taillon before the night ended thanks to a RBI single by Vucinich and a RBI double by Joey Paciorek that gave Brevard a 6-3 lead.

Following the top of the fifth, there was a 45 minute rain delay which effectively ended Hall's night on the hill. Hall went four innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits. He walked two and struck out two, but was not able to qualify for the win.

Greg Holle took the mound when play resumed and threw a scoreless fifth, but ran into trouble in the sixth as he allowed two runs on three hits as the Marauders cut Brevard's lead to 6-5.

The Manatees were able to get an insurance run in the seventh thanks to a RBI single by Pacoriek. Casey Medlen came on in the bottom of the inning and allowed the lead-off runner to reach on an error, but he would retire the side from there for his 11th save of the season as Brevard snapped a four-game losing streak.

The bottom of the order got the job done for Brevard as Vucinich, Paciorek and Dishon combined to go 5-for-11 with three runs scored and five RBI. Four of the Manatees seven RBI came with two outs and the 'Tees went 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Box Score

This is now the 2nd time the 'Tees have defeated Jameson Taillon. As a top-20 prospect, I was expecting to see better numbers from Taillon. As it turns out, his season stats are pretty similar to what Taylor Jungmann and Jed Bradley have done thus far. Taillon is younger and throws harder though.

On offense, everyone was getting on base. The stars were Shea Vucinich (2-3 3B BB) and Joey Paciorek (2-4 2B). It was Paciorek's first game in 5 days. I would wager it is due to his incredibly slow last 10 games.

Brooks Hall got knocked out by the rain delay but not before he gave up a big 3rd inning. A Hall error did not help. 4 IP 5 H 3 R 2 ER 2 BB 2 K 1 WP 4:4 GO:FO. Greg Holle gave up the lead and Casey Medlen pitched well to finish out the game fr his 11th save.

Birmingham 12, @Huntsville 5

Huntsville Box

The Barons jumped all over starter Evan Anundsen, scoring five runs in the 1st. Anundsen then only allowed one hit until the 6th inning... when, with one out, he surrendered a single and walk. He was lifted from the game for reliever Philippe Valiquette, who proceeded to give up a single and two HRs for a a 6-run Birmingham inning. Dan Merklinger worked 3 IP in relief, allowing a single run on a solo HR in the 8th.

Still no Scooter Gennett, who's been absent from the Huntsville lineup since a 9th-inning play at home plate on Wednesday (heads-up catch by Brad in yesterday's L.R.). No word yet -- as far as I know -- from the organization.

Hunter Morris's 0-fer extended to three straight games, as he went 0-4... although he walked once and came up with a groundout RBI in the 6th. T.J. Mittelstaedt led the Huntsville offense, finishing 2-4 with a pair of doubles and one walk. Hainley Statia went 3-4 with 1 BB & 1 RBI. Anderson De La Rosa was 2-4 with 1 BB; Kentrail Davis was 2-5 with 1 RBI, and 1/1 in SB attempts. Josh Prince went 1-4 with a BB and yet another SB (33) that pushed his organization-leading total three ahead of second place-holder Reggie Keen (A+, Brevard County). Khris Davis and Lee Haydel each finished 1-5; Davis had one RBI.

The closest the Stars were able to get tonight was 5-3, after scoring once in the 3rd and twice in the 5th. But they weren't able to chase down Birmingham after the Barons jumped ahead, 11-3, on the strength of their 6-run 6th..

Huntsville PbP

Not much fun to be found in tonight's game log, but here's Huntsville's best offensive inning:

Huntsville Bottom of the 5th

-T. J. Mittelstaedt doubles (3) on a ground ball to right fielder Jose Martinez.

-Hunter Morris lines out to left fielder Brady Shoemaker.

-Khris Davis strikes out swinging.

-Hainley Statia singles on a fly ball to right fielder Jose Martinez. T. Mittelstaedt scores. Hainley Statia to 2nd on the throw.

-Pitcher Change: Nevin Griffith replaces Andre Rienzo.

-Kentrail Davis singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jared Mitchell. Hainley Statia scores.

-With Tommy Manzella batting, Kentrail Davis steals (14) 2nd base.

-Tommy Manzella strikes out swinging.

5-3 after that mini-rally, and the Stars had to be feeling like they could get right back in this game... oh well. Lace 'em up tomorrow and try again.

Brevard County 11 Bradenton (Pirates) 10

Box Score

Great sweep. 11 runs in this one as the offense was making things happen all day.

Big Brock Kjeldgaard went yard. Cody Hawn had 2 hits including a 2B and a BB. Shea Vucinich had 3 more hits as he moved in the 2-hole for this game.

The only effective pitcher was Eric Marzec who notched his 2nd save with 2 9th inning outs. Tommy Toledo made his A+ debut and gave up 4 runs before recording an out. He finished the inning strong though, holding the damage to 4.

Jason Rogers is all the way back down to .306. He is still rockin' an approximate 2:1 BB:K in A+.

Brevard hangs on to sweep double dip

07/14/2012 11:55 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were up 11-3 and allowed eight runs in the last three innings, but held on to edge the Bradenton Marauders 11-10 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at McKechnie Field. The win earned the Manatees a split of the four-game series and Brevard is now 9-3 in double dip games this season.

The 'Tees (12-10 second half, 41-49 overall) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-out, three-run homer from Brock Kjeldgaard. Bradenton would get two back in the bottom of the inning off of Brevard starter Brandon Williamson (2-6, 7.01) on a RBI ground out from Mel Rojas and a RBI single by Andy Vasquez.

Brevard proceeded to score six more runs off of Marauders starter Matt Benedict in the next two innings, to take a 9-2 lead. The 'Tees rocked Benedict for nine runs on nine hits in just two-plus innings.

The Manatees gave Williamson more of a cushion with two more runs in the fifth, thanks to a RBI double from Franklin Romero Jr. and a RBI single from Shea Vucinich as Brevard had an 11-2 lead.

However Bradenton (13-10, 42-51) did not go down without a fight, as they racked up three runs on five hits against Williamson in the fifth to cut Brevard County's lead to 11-5. Williamson allowed four earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work, while striking out four and walking two.

Tommy Toledo, making his first appearance with the Manatees since being promoted from Class-A Wisconsin, relieved Williamson in the sixth and did not fare well. Toledo allowed a lead-off walk to Kawika Emsley-Pai and then back-to-back singles to load the bases.

Toledo then hit Kirk Singer with the bases loaded as the Marauders cut the lead to 11-6. Toledo then allowed back-to-back singles, as three more runs scored to make it an 11-9 game. With runners on first and second and no outs, Andy Vasquez represented the go-ahead run at the dish for the Marauders.

Toledo was able to get out of the jam as Vasquez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and Carlos Mesa grounded out to second to end the inning.

Brevard was unable to plate the always important insurance run in the top of the seventh as Seth Harvey came into the game to close it out in the bottom of the inning.

Just like Toledo, Harvey ran into trouble immediately as he led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After a sacrifice bunt by Benji Gonzalez put runners on second and third, Dan Grovatt singled to right to plate a run as Bradenton was now down by just one run.

With runners on the corners and one out, Harvey was lifted for Eric Marzec. Marzec was able to get out of the jam and earn the save as Singer fouled out and Justin Howard went down looking as the Manatees survived.

With the exception of Jason Rogers, every Manatee recorded a hit in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Vucinich led the way as he was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Kjeldgaard and Cody Hawn had two hits each, as the 'Tees were 7-for-13 win runners in scoring position.

Brevard will head back across the state as they open up a four-game set with the St. Lucie Mets (10-13, 59-32) in Port St. Lucie on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Andy Moye (4-1, 4.67) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees as he looks to rebound from his first loss of 2012. The Mets will counter with Tyler Pill (2-1, 2.41).

Ogden (Dodgers) 11 Helena 10

Box Score

Just your typical Pioneer League slugfest that happened to end poorly for the good guys. Odgen walks off in the 9th tonight.

Tyrone Taylor looks like a gem with 3 more hits tonight and his 3rd steal. 2 and 3-hitters, Michael Reed and Chris McFarland, each had 2 hits and a BB. Yonki Hernandez (2-4 HR) had a big game, but left after a ground out in the 8th.

An incredibly poorly pitched game by everyone involved making it not worth mentioning any of them really.

4 more Helena errors tonight. There seems to be a crooked number in that space every night. Over the next couple of weeks, I will start to determine the biggest offenders. One for sure is Alfredo Rodriguez who now has 9 errors already, including one tonight.

Now, get me to bed!!!

Final: Arizona Rangers 7, Arizona Brewers 4

Box Score / Game Log

Our Maryvale Link Reporter has informed me he'll be unavailable for this AM and another week. We really need the Arizona League to return to a daytime schedule next year. Thank goodness for the Manatees, othewise we might still be in High Desert.

Clint Coulter added another passed ball and a throwing error to his collection. RF Jose Pena had the night off, which left a huge hole in the middle of the lineup, although 2B Jose Sermo did a nice job at cleanup as an unlikely selection there.

Second conseutive rough outing for 10th round Texas high school LHP Anthony Banda, who got the start, his first professionally; RHP Jono Armold stranded two runners for Banda, and RHP Joel Dicent kept it close late.

Only 90 degrees in the desert!
