Link Report for Thurs. 7/12 -- Waiting for 2011 2nd round RHP Jorge Lopez to impress

Brewer Fanatic Staff

It's going to look nasty in the box score, but there was exactly one hard-hit ball vs. LHP David Otterman during the unfortunate game-breaking four-run 7th in the Helena game tonight (bad hop ball, bad defensive mistake, well placed Chukar dribblers).

[Gym Locker Room]

KRAMER: Wide open, I was wide open underneath! I had three inches on that guy. You two were hogging the ball.

GEORGE: Me? It wasn't me I never even saw the ball. All you do is dribble.

JERRY: I have to dribble, if I give it to you, you just shoot. You're a chucker.

GEORGE: Oh I'm a chucker.

JERRY: That's right, everytime you get the ball you shoot.

GEORGE: I can't believe you called me a chucker. No way I'm a chucker, I do not chuck, never chucked, never have chucked, never will chuck, no chuck!

JERRY: You chuck.

GEROGE: Kramer am I a chucker?

KRAMER: You're a chucker.

GEORGE: All these years I've been chuckin' and you've never told me?

JERRY: Well it's not an easy thing to bring up.

'Tees routed 10-3 by Marauders

07/12/2012 9:55 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. - After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Brevard County Manatees allowed ten unanswered runs over the next eight innings as they were crushed 10-3 by the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday night at McKechnie Field for their fourth consecutive loss.

A two-out single by Hector Gomez in the first plated Jason Rogers and Mike Walker as the Manatees (10-10 second half, 39-49 overall) took the early 2-0 lead. The Marauders (10-9, 42-49) would get one run back in the second on a RBI single by Kawika Emsley-Pai and then tied the game in the fifth with a RBI single from Mel Rojas.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Marauders touched up Brevard County starter Taylor Jungmann (7-5, 3.59) for four runs on five consecutive two-out singles. Jungmann departed with the 'Tees down 6-2 as Seth Harvey got the final out of the inning.

The 2011 first round pick allowed a season-high 13 hits - all of them singles - in 5.2 innings of work. Jungmann yielded six runs (five earned), while walking one and fanning one.

After Harvey allowed a run on a wild pitch in the seventh; Thomas Keeling entered the game in the eighth. Keeling allowed three runs, one on a solo homer to Gift Ngoepe and two on a two-out triple to Justin Howard.

Offensively, the Manatees were able to total ten hits, including four doubles. But Brevard was unable to take advantage of their opportunities as they were 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.

Mike Walker was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Both Reggie Keen and Nick Shaw had two hits each, as Keen had two doubles and a RBI.

Brevard County and Bradenton will continue their series on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

Brooks Hall (3-3, 4.04) will get the ball for the 'Tees. In his last six starts, Hall is 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA. The Marauders will send Matt Benedict (0-3, 8.27) to the hill. (No Excuses)

Box Score

Back to .500 and it kind of got out of hand towards the end.

Taylor Jungmann got the start and was little more than a human pitching machine (13 singles, 17 outs) for Bradenton, nonetheless it was 2-2 until the 6th. Seth Harvey and Wild Thomas Keeling were about as successful as Jungmann. Big start for Brooks Hall tomorrow as he looks to put the brakes on this rough patch.

At the plate, Reggie Keen (2-5 2 2B) is on fire with a Michael Bourne-ish .802 OPS over his last 10. Nick Shaw went 2-5 with a 2B and Mike Walker went 3-3 with a 2B HBP and SB.

The struggling Brock Kjeldgaard got creamed by two pitches tonight.

Game Log

Harvey K'ed the highly regarded Dickerson to end the madness.

Marauders Rake Manatees 10-3

07/12/2012 9:58 AM ET

By Bradenton Marauders

Bradenton, Fla.- The Bradenton Marauders (13-8) secured their 10th come-from-behind victory of the season, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit to roll past the Brevard County Manatees (10-10) by a 10-3 score on Thursday night at McKechnie Field. Every Marauders starter recorded at least one hit in the win.

The Manatees plated two runs in the first inning against Tyler Waldron (W, 6-6), but could not maintain their momentum against the righty. Waldron settled in and did not allow another run in six innings.

After scoring an unearned run in the second inning, the Marauders tied the game in the fifth with three straight hits off Taylor Jungmann (L 7-5). Mel Rojas Jr. drove home the tying run on an infield single the Jungman deflected. Rojas Jr., Gift Ngoepe and Dan Grovatt all had three hit games. Grovatt's hitting streak now stands at 15 games.

With two outs and nobody on in the sixth, the Marauders bats exploded for five straight hits of Jungmann. The Manatees' starter yielded 13 hits and the Marauders had 18 total knocks. A two-RBI single by Rojas Jr. chased Jungmann with the score 6-2.

Bradenton scored once in the seventh and three times in the eighth, including Ngoepe's eighth home run of the season. Eliecer Navarro pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Waldron. Zach Foster allowed one run in the ninth to finish the game.

Kawika Emsley-Pai went 2-3, recording his first multi-hit game of the season. Justin Howard went 2-3, including a two-RBI triple. Alex Dickerson was a relatively quiet 1-5, but doubled for the 20th time this year.

Game three of the series will be played Friday at McKechnie Field. The season series now stands even at three wins apiece. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.

Final: DSL Brewers 3, DSL Braves 2 (10 Innings)

DSL Brewers Box Score

Another well pitched affair, a pretty common theme thus far for the DSL squad. This time out it was Eduard Reyes who went 6 strong innings allowing just 3 hits, 1 run, 0 earned, with 2 walks against 5 strike outs. Victor Diaz followed and hurt himself with an error in the 9th eventually being replaced by Felix Paulino who let the tying inherited runner score, but the bats came back and scored a walk off win with a walk.

Juan Ortiz led the way offensively going 3-4, with a 2B, and a walk, the double was the only XBH for the good guys in the game. The other multiple hit games were from Francisco Castillo who went 2-4 with a BB and Yunior Santana who went 2-3 and also walked once.

Both Reyes and Diaz managed errors on pick off attempts, Carlos Pena had a throwing error, and Ortiz had a fielding error. Ortiz and Castillo both stole a base and were caught stealing during the contest.

DSL Brewers Play By Play

After the teams traded runs in the 2nd the Brewers jumped ahead in the 4th.

  • Eugenio Diaz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Francisco Castillo.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Jesus Heredia replaces Eugenio Diaz.
With Jose Morel batting, throwing error by Victor Diaz on the pickoff attempt, Jesus Heredia to 2nd.

Idaho Falls (Royals) 5 Helena 0

Box Score

There were basically three good hitters and one good pitcher tonight for Helena.

Leonard Lorenzo continued his fine Pioneer League season with 6 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 3 K 7:6 GO:FO. The ERA is in the 3's but the peripherals are not the best. David Otterman was next and he got Seinfeld'ed.

Chris McFarland (3-3 BB) keeps spraying hits all over the place. I kind of expect him to add power as the season progresses, similar to what Hunter Morris did. The difference, instead of doubles turning into homers, I am hoping singles turn into doubles and triples. Adam Giacalone (2-4) had me scared for second after 5 or so games. He was striking out a lot and not getting any hits. Now, he is up to .261 and looks like a legit hitter, at least in the lower levels, as he is cruising along with a .400+ average and a .900+ OPS over his last 10. The only other hitter with a hit was Emmanuel Quiles (2-4 2B).

Michael Reed, Tyrone Taylor and Raul Mondesi Jr went 0-11 with 9 K. The opposing pitcher, Ali Williams, is off to a very fine start this season.

Game Log

Nary an XBH until the 9th.

Helena Top of the 9th

Raul Mondesi strikes out swinging, catcher Jin-Ho Shin to first baseman Rainier Bello.

Emmanuel Quiles doubles (4) on a fly ball to right fielder Jerico Blanco.

Kevin Berard flies out to right fielder Jerico Blanco.

With Andres Martinez batting, wild pitch by Joe Lopez, Emmanuel Quiles to 3rd.

Andres Martinez strikes out swinging, catcher Jin-Ho Shin to first baseman Rainier Bello.

Taveras brings Futures power to Texas

Cards' No. 3 prospect goes deep, plates three on 4-for-5 night

By Sam Dykstra / Special to MLB.com

http://www.milb.com/images/2012/07/12/Qx4GU5Qm.jpg

Oscar Taveras leads the Texas League with a .984 OPS through 81 games this season.

At the beginning of the week, Oscar Taveras was showing the globe just what he could do with the bat. The Dominican Republic native represented the World Team at the Futures Game in Kansas City delivered an RBI while playing all nine innings in his team's 17-5 loss to the U.S. squad.

But his most impressive feats came before the game. The left-handed slugger launched a homer deep over the Kauffman Stadium batter's eye in center field during pregame batting practice and later added another blast that reached the park's famed fountains in right center.

On Thursday, Taveras showed he didn't leave his power back in Kansas City.

The Cardinals' No. 3 prospect went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs as Double-A Springfield routed Northwest Arkansas, 7-0.

The center fielder notched RBI singles in the first and second innings before singling again in the fourth. After striking out in the sixth, he went deep for the first time in a game since his Kansas City display, homering the opposite way to left field off Naturals right-handed reliever Patrick Keating.

The blast, which barely went over the fence, was Taveras' 18th of the season, putting him into a tie for fourth in the Texas League with San Antonio's Cody Decker. That's a vast improvement over his eight-homer output for Class A Quad Cities last year, but according to Springfield manager Mike Shildt, that's not a big surprise.

"You've got to figure they are going to make adjustments to him, and he's going to make adjustments," Shildt told the Springfield News-Leader. "Oscar's got a real barrel ability. His barrel finds the ball, and he's got real good hands. So he's got the ability to hit them where they're pitched.

"But we're not constantly trying to have him hit the ball the other way. He's always hit the ball to all fields."

After collecting four hits for the second time this season, MLB.com's No. 84 prospect also improved his batting average to a circuit-best .331 -- the stat's highest mark since May 12. His .984 OPS is also tops in Texas while his 66 RBIs are second, trailing only Nathan Freiman, also of San Antonio.

Taveras wasn't the only Cardinal to produce offensively Thursday. Fellow Futures Game player and second baseman Kolten Wong was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Right fielder Chris Swauger went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

Cardinals' No. 7 prospect Trevor Rosenthal scattered four hits and a walk and struck out six over six shutout innings. .

Sounds roster gets All-Star shakeup

by Greg Sullivan, the Tennessean

The Nashville Sounds’ roster will have a new look when the club resumes play tonight with a 7:05 home game against Albuquerque following the All-Star break and a rainout on Thursday.

Hot-hitting shortstop Jeff Bianchi and right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Thornburg were called up by the Brewers on Wednesday. It’s 25-year-old Bianchi’s first stint in the major leagues.

Third baseman Taylor Green, who started the season with the Sounds before an extended stay with the Brewers, was sent back to Nashville.

Longtime former Sound Tim Dillard was reassigned on Wednesday after spending the entire first part of the season with Milwaukee. The reliever has until Saturday to decide whether to accept an assignment with Nashville or become a free agent.

Dillard was not among those in the Sounds’ clubhouse Thursday prior to players leaving Greer Stadium once the rainout was announced.

“You know that things are going to happen and things change day-to-day at this level,” Sounds Manager Mike Guerrero said. “Hopefully we can help our major league club to turn things around with (Bianchi and Thornburg) going up there. Whatever we can do to do that, we’ve got to do it.”

Bianchi was leading the Sounds in hitting (.305) after starting the season at Double-A Huntsville. Thornburg got a win in his one start as a Sound.

Retirement: Sounds’ outfielder and former big-league slugger Jay Gibbons retired from baseball over the break.

Gibbons, 35, hit 127 home runs in parts of nine seasons in the majors with the Orioles and Dodgers, but he was hitting .204 with the Sounds.

“Jay said he wanted to spend more time with his family. He’s got young kids,” said Patterson, who has spent parts of 12 seasons in the big leagues and said he has been around plenty of players contemplating retirement. “It’s tough on a lot of guys. Not all of us get to go out on our own terms and ride off into the sunset on a horse. I’d hope I’ve got a few years left in me, but it can sting. From talking with him, I think this is what he was ready to do.”

Staying home: Tonight’s game is the first of eight straight at home for Nashville, and the Sounds play 16 of their next 20 games at Greer Stadium. Nashville and Albuquerque play a doubleheader on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. due to Thursday’s rainout.

The Sounds were 21-19 at home prior to the All-Star break compared to 19-32 on the road.

“At least this month we can sleep at home,” Sounds Manager Mike Guerrero said. “Hopefully we can have a good homestand and have a good start to the second half.”

Winning combination: When Detroit’s Prince Fielder won Monday’s Home Run Derby with former Sounds hitting coach Sandy Guerrero, Mike Guerrero’s brother, it was the second time the pair had teamed up to win the event.

Fielder won the event three years ago with Sandy Guerrero pitching, as well, when he was with the Brewers.

“It was a really nice gesture that even though we’re in different organizations, he asked for permission for me to pitch,” Sandy Guerrero said. “We made history this year. He’s the only guy to win in both leagues.”

Timber Rattlers 5, Captains 3: All-Star shortstops from Puerto Rico have formed quick bond

By David S. Glasier, News-Herald.com

Two up-and-coming shortstops from Caguas, Puerto Rico, shared center stage Thursday at Classic Park as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers posted a 5-3 victory over the Captains.

Francisco Lindor of the Captains was the Indians' first-round choice in the June 2011 draft. Many baseball people rate the 18-year-old switch hitter as the top prospect in the Cleveland farm system.

Batting .262 with four home runs, 26 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 26 attempts, Lindor was the Eastern Division's starting shortstop in the Midwest League All-Star game.

He also was invited to play for the International team in last Sunday's Futures game, a component of the Major League Baseball All-Star event.

Yadiel Rivera of the Timber Rattlers was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the ninth round of the June 2010 draft.

Rivera isn't considered an elite prospect, but the 20-year-old middle infielder's combination of size (6-foot-3, 185 pounds), power (10 home runs) and run production (36 RBI, 42 runs) is turning heads inside and outside the Milwaukee organization.

Despite his .236 average, Rivera was selected to the Western Division all-star squad.

Rivera was the hitting star for the Timber Rattlers in Wednesday's 11-8 victory over the Captains. He went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, double and two singles.

Although he managed only a walk in three official at-bats in Thursday's matinee affair, Rivera made his presence felt on defense. He was in on four double plays, two of them unassisted.

"Yadi has really nice hands, great footwork and seems able to control the game in his mind," Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson said.

What turned out to be a critical play at second base in the bottom of the sixth inning brought together Lindor and Rivera in tight quarters.

With the Timber Rattlers having just scored three runs in the top of the frame to take a 5-3 lead, Lindor led off in the bottom half of the sixth with a sharp single to left field off Wisconsin reliever Jacob Barnes.

Lindor advanced to second base when Jordan legged out a ground ball hit to Rivera deep in the hole.

Up to the plate came Captains first baseman Jerrud Sabourin and his team-high 38 RBI. Sabourin hit a shoetop-level line drive to Rivera, who seemed to have the liner in leather until the ball fell to the ground in front of him.

When base umpire James Rackley made no signal, Rivera tagged Lindor for one out and stepped on second to force Smith and complete the twin killing.

The strictest interpretation of baseball rules forbids a player from intentionally dropping a ball to initiate a tagout-forceout double play. Rivera admitted after the game that he intentionally dropped the ball. Erickson said the same. Captains manager Dave Wallace said he and his coaches understood what was happening.

"It's a play that's not inside the rules, but it's a play you want to try to make if you can," Wallace said. "In the big leagues, the umpires wouldn't have let it stand. That play (Rivera) made was beyond the capabilities of these umpires to make the call.

"Frankie (Lindor) made the same play earlier this season," Wallace added.

Rivera and Lindor said no words were exchanged between them after the play unfolded at second base.

Although both hail from Caguas, a city of 140,000 in east-central Puerto Rico, Rivera and Lindor had never met until they crossed paths at the All-Star game in Illinois.

They went out to dinner at a Mentor restaurant after Wednesday's game.

"He's a good guy, a humble guy who works really hard and knows the game," Lindor said of Rivera.

Rivera had similar praise for Lindor, whom he described as a "new friend, a great guy and a very talented player."

Both said they'd love to get to the big leagues at about the same time and represent Caguas. Lindor and his family moved from Puerto Rico to Florida when he was 12.

The Captains took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Smith's three-run home run. He now has five home runs and 36 RBI.

Wisconsin starter Chad Thompson (4-2, 4.84 ERA) and Barnes blanked the Captains the rest of the way as the Timber Rattlers improved to 11-9 in the second half.

Right-handed reliever Enosil Tejada (0-1, 13.50), making his first appearance for the Captains after being called up from Mahoning Valley, gave up three runs on four hits in two inning to take the loss. The Captains slipped to 9-11 with their second straight setback.

Final: Arizona Mariners 7, Arizona Brewers 6

Arizona Game Log

We'll start with the game log because this loss must have been so frustrating for the single-digit Brewer fans in the stands.

A-Crew trailed 7-1 heading to the bottom of the 8th, but the rotating catcher-designated hitter combo of Clint Coulter and Dustin Houle helped close the gap in that frame, although as you'll see, the inning could have been more fruitful:

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 8th

Dionis Hinojosa doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Rashynol Michel.

Jose Sermo grounds out, shortstop Keith Werman to first baseman Christian Carmichael.

Clint Coulter singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Leal. Dionis Hinojosa scores.

Dustin Houle singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Leal. Clint Coulter scores. Dustin Houle to 2nd. Fielding error by right fielder Jose Leal.

Jose Pena singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Leal. Dustin Houle to 3rd.

Jalen Harris grounds into double play, second baseman Timothy Lopes to shortstop Keith Werman to first baseman Christian Carmichael. Jose Pena out at 2nd.

So Carlos Sosa then strikes out two batters in a 1-2-3 top of the 9th, and we head to the final frame. Unfortunately, the Coulter-Houle duo could not duplicate their 8th inning work in what was an exceedingly excrutiating to read come-up-one-run-short rally. This included a baserunning faux-pas, with Dionis Hinojosa getting thrown out at 3rd base for the first out:

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 9th

Pitcher Change: Alex Roy replaces Jose Flores.

Alan Sharkey hit by pitch.

Angel Ortega singles on a fly ball to left fielder Rashynol Michel. Alan Sharkey to 2nd.

Edgardo Rivera walks. Alan Sharkey to 3rd. Angel Ortega to 2nd.

Pitcher Change: Cody Weiss replaces Alex Roy.

Dionis Hinojosa singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Leal. Alan Sharkey scores. Angel Ortega scores. Edgardo Rivera to 2nd.

Jose Sermo singles on a fly ball to left fielder Rashynol Michel. Edgardo Rivera scores. Dionis Hinojosa out at 3rd on the throw, left fielder Rashynol Michel to third baseman Joseph DeCarlo. Jose Sermo to 2nd on the throw.

With Clint Coulter batting, wild pitch by Cody Weiss, Jose Sermo to 3rd.

Clint Coulter pops out to third baseman Joseph DeCarlo in foul territory.

Dustin Houle pops out to second baseman Timothy Lopes.

Sigh...

Arizona Box Score

The Austin's (Hill and Blaski) did not allow an earned Mariner run over the first five innings. Each hurler was a college pick, and surely they're waiting for opportunities in Montana. A triple, walk, and single translated into three 3rd inning runs against Austin Hill due to two errors and a passed ball.

Didn't we expect 2011 2nd round RHP Jorge Lopez to be making a Gallardo-like impression on us in Helena this year? He's young, but not ultra-young (nearly 19 1/2). He got his feet wet with four limited starts in Maryvale last summer. Yet four of his five outings this year have been really weak.

What did the Brewers see in extended spring training to keep him from Helena? Apparently what they are seeing here. Color me concerned, as I place negative value and read into repeat assignments.

Clint Coulter added three more passed balls to his resume (nine on the season), but he did throw out a baserunner attempting a steal of second base.

Leadoff 2B Jose Sermo was on base three times and drove in two, but it was his error that ruined the 3rd inning. Hinojosa also reached three times, but we mentioned his blunder, so it's hard to find someone who had a solid all-around game (we did, see next paragraph). SS Angel Ortega committed three throwing errors, doubling his season total, so you can't blame the Maryvale grounds crew on those.

RF Jose Pena walked and singled, so his OPS increased to a glistening 1.087. He also gunned down a runner at the plate -- we are loving this 2012 version of the 2010 bonus baby, as stateside comfort must agree with him.

CF Edgardo Rivera had a nice pro debut, single, walk, two runs scored.

While more power would certainly be nice, McFarland's debut out of high school in the Pioneer league so far is looking pretty good for a middle IF prospect. Plenty of average and a solid eye at the plate. Arguably enough to make him the 3rd best middle IF prospect we have after Rivera and Scooter.
