Link Report for Wed. 7/11 -- Back to Work (and Helena fans can watch this series)

The DSL still hasn't popped so I'm going to listen to Dead Sara one more time and head to bed. I'll catch it in the morning if it's up before I go. Yes I like chick rockers, always have, nothing cooler than a female lead who brings it.

Brevard opens road trip with 5-2 loss

07/11/2012 10:24 PM ET

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees opened up an eight-game road trip on the wrong foot as they fell 5-2 to the Bradenton Marauders on Wednesday night at McKechnie Field.

The game was tied 2-2 after seven innings, but the Marauders scored three runs - all with two outs - in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Eric Marzec, en route to handing the 'Tees their third consecutive loss.

Drew Gagnon (0-0, 2.41) got the start for Brevard (10-9 second half, 39-48 overall) and went 6.2 innings while allowed two runs. He scattered four hits, walked three and fanned three as he recorded his third quality start in as many outings with the Manatees.

Gagnon and the 'Tees fell behind early as a two-out RBI double by Alex Dickerson in the bottom of the first gave Bradenton (12-8, 41-49) a 1-0 lead. Brevard would get that run back right away in the top of the second, thanks to a two-out solo homer by Parker Berberet.

Marauders starter Colton Cain was able to hold the 'Tees in check for the next few innings, but Brevard broke through against the southpaw, to break the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth. Brock Kjeldgaard led the frame off with a double to right field. He would move to third on a groundout by Cody Hawn and was driven in one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Hector Gomez.

Gagnon was on cruise control as he retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced from the second inning until the seventh inning with two outs. That's where he would run into trouble, as he allowed back-to-back singles to Carlos Paulino and Justin Howard to put runners on the corners.

Then with Carlos Mesa at the plate, the Marauders were able to pull off a successful double steal as Howard stole second and Paulino stole home on the throw down by Berberet to second. Gagnon would go on to walk Mesa and would then be lifted for Marzec as the game was now tied at 2-2. Marzec was able to strikeout Andy Vasquez looking to end the inning.

Jason Rogers led off the top of the eighth with a double to left, but the Manatees were unable to do anything with it as they proceeded to go down in order. Rogers was 3-for-4 on the night and is hitting .500 (12-for-24) on the road. He also has six multi-hit games in his first 19 contests with Brevard.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Marzec allowed a triple to Dan Grovatt. After striking out Gift Ngoepe, Mel Rojas would reach on a bobbled ball by Cody Hawn at first as Grovatt scored to give the Marauders a 3-2 lead. Dickerson then singled to center to put runners on first and second.

Paulino and Howard then hit back-to-back RBI singles to give Bradenton a 5-2 advantage. The inning ended with Paulino getting thrown out at third on a relay throw by Reggie Keen.

Brevard had one last chance in the ninth as Mike Walker led off the inning with a walk; but Berberet grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and then Shea Vucinich flew out to second to end the game.

The Manatees own the worst road record in the Florida State League as they are just 12-27 away from Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard will look to snap its three-game skid on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., in the second game of their four-game set with Bradenton.

Taylor Jungmann (7-4, 3.35) will get the ball for the Manatees as he looks to win his third consecutive decision. In his last six starts, which coincidentally started with a win over Bradenton, the 2011 first round pick is 6-0 with a 2.18 ERA.

The Marauders will counter with Tyler Waldron (5-6, 5.40). Waldron is 1-3 with a 5.66 ERA in four second half starts.

Box Score

Opportunistic Marauders Win Series Opener

07/11/2012 10:36 AM ET

By Bradenton Marauders

Bradenton, Fla.- The Bradenton Marauders (12-8) capitalized on late mistakes by the Brevard County Manatees (10-9) Wednesday night to secure a 5-2 win the first game of a four game series at McKechnie Field. Jason Townsend (W, 3-2) earned the win for the Marauders with two scoreless innings of relief.

Bradenton opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-out double by Alex Dickerson. Gift Ngoepe, who reached on a single, stole his 16th base of the season immediately preceding the double by Dickerson.

The lead did not last long for Bradenton. Parker Berberet connected on his first home run of the season with two outs in the second. The solo shot off Colton Cain tied the game at 1-1. Cain pitched six innings and did not factor in the decision. He struck out the side in the first, but did not have another strikeout on the night.

In the sixth, Brock Kjeldgaard led off with a double for Brevard County. After moving to third on a groundout, Kjeldgaard scored on a sacrifice fly from Hector Gomez to put the Manatees in front.

This time it was the Manatees with a short-lived advantage. With two down in the home half of the seventh consecutive singles by Carlos Paulino and Justin Howard put runners at the corners against Drew Gagnon. The Brevard County starter threw a low pitch to Carlos Mesa. When the pitch skipped into the glove of Berberet, Howard bolted for second. On the throw to second Paulino rushed home, narrowly beating the relay back from second to tie the score 2-2. Eric Marzec entered to strike out Andy Vasquez and end the inning after a walk to Mesa chased Gagnon.

The Marauder put a runner at third with one out in the eighth on a triple by Dan Grovatt. Grovatt extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games. It is the longest streak active in the Florida State League. Marzec struck out Ngoepe on three pitches for the second out. Mel Rojas Jr. worked the count full and then hit a grounder that was mishandled by Cody Hawn at first, giving Bradenton the lead 3-2. Three straight hits by Dickerson, Paulino and Howard led to two more runs to close the scoring. Dickerson and Howard were each 2-4 with an RBI, while Paulino went 2-3 and plated a run as well.

Doug Salinas pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save in as many tries. All of Salinas' saves have come in the second half of the season.

The Marauders and Manatees play game two of their series on Thursday night at McKechnie Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.

Helena 8 Idaho Falls (Royals) 7

Box Score

Single tallies in each of the final 3 innings resulted in a comeback win for the H-Crew. The bottom two in the lineup were pretty punchless, but the top-7 hitters went 12-29 with 3 BB. The only XBH was a double by Tyrone Taylor (2-5 2B CS HBP). Adam Giacalone went 3-4. He has officially snapped out of a cold spell to start the season. Michael Reed, Alfredo Rodriguez and Raul Mondesi Jr. each had two knocks.

I missed the call from Steve tonight but if someone can explain what the plan his with Manny Ruiz, I would really appreciate it. Tonight he was left in to record 2 outs. UWM alum Eric Semmelhack got the start and got hit hard. None of the 13 outs he recorded came via a strikeout. Ryan Gibbard got the win with 3 scoreless and Connor Whalen got the save. It is nice to have Connor at the back end of the pen.

Idaho Falls starter Zeb Snead plunked 3 Brewers (Taylor, McFarland and Mondesi Jr.). No retaliation was enacted.

Sounds coach pitches exercise

Pitching coach trains in MMA to keep fit

by Matt Gray, The Tennessean

Very few minor-league baseball pitching coaches can boast a physique that rivals those of the players he interacts with everyday. Fred Dabney, first-year pitching coach for the Nashville Sounds, can make that claim.

Dabney has been training in mixed martial arts for more than 10 years and competes in tournaments during the offseason.

“I’ve always played around with (the contact sport of) Muay Thai and stuff like that,” Dabney said. “Then one day, a buddy of mine who works in the sheriff’s department was like, ‘Hey man you work out a lot. We could use a guy like you in our gym, we grapple all the time.’ ”

Dabney said he was reluctant to join, but once his friend told him it was a great workout, he gave in.

Dabney’s first class he attended was a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Wolfpack BJJ in Sarasota, Fla.

“I got on the mat and started playing around with my buddy, wrestling him and stuff like that,” Dabney said. “He’s about 170 pounds and within a minute-and-a-half, I was pretty miserable down there.”

Dabney continued training at Wolfpack and in 2009, he won the Masters Gi Cruiserweight division at the Copa America Grappling Championships in Bradenton, Fl.

Sounds pitcher Mark Rogers said MMA is often a conversation topic between Dabney and his players.

“He doesn’t hide it,” Rogers said. “He comes in every day to the locker room and shows us a move of the day. Let’s just say I would never step into the ring with him.”

While some players, such as Rogers, are hesitant to go against the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Dabney, others are more confident.

“Guys who train in anything are typically better that guys who don’t,” said Sounds pitcher Seth McClung. “But even though he is trained in MMA, I’m trained in crazy so I might have a shot.”

Dabney has spent the last nine years as a pitching coach in the Brewers’ organization and says that he’s come up with a lot of the guys on his staff now.

“I have a pretty good relationship with (the players) for the most part,” Dabney said. “I’m easy-going and they know that I’m here for them. Anything that they need or want, they don’t have to come find me, I’m always here.”

After a three-day All-Star break, Dabney and the Sounds return to the field Thursday night, hosting Albuquerque at 7:05 p.m.

Final: DSL Tigers 2, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

MiLB.com still hasn't updated yet, if/when they do I can go back and change the links but these should work for now. Not really much to talk about offensively here. The famous Harry Doyle line comes to mind...One hit? Elvis Rubio was 1-4 with the only base hit for the Brewers. Catcher Natanael Mejia drew two walks. Juan Ortiz walked once and stole his 9th base of the year.

The pitching for the Brewers was pretty good though. Milton Gomez was the tough luck loser, going five innings and allowing just one earned run. Marcos Padilla and Joan De La Cruz each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Stars Fall in Extra Innings to BayBears

MOBILE, Ala. – Despite having seven more hits than their opposition, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Mobile BayBears by a score of 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

In the first inning, the Stars offense started off hot against Mobile starting pitcher Michael Bolsinger. With a leadoff double from center fielder Josh Prince and third baseman Hainley Statia reaching on an error, Huntsville had runners at first and third and nobody out. The next at-bat, second baseman Scooter Gennett grounded out, allowing Prince to score to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.

The BayBears came back in the third inning and tied up the ballgame. Catcher Rossmel Perez was hit by a pitch by to begin the inning and Bolsinger hit a sacrifice bunt to adavance him. Perez stole third to set up center fielder Evan Frey with one out. A throwing error down to third by catcher Anderson De La Rosa scored Perez to tie up the game.

With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, the Stars then got a surge from an unlikely source. In his first game started since a month-long stint on the disabled list, left fielder Khris Davis crushed a solo home run off of reliever Gaby Hernandez to help the Stars regain the lead.

However, in the sixth inning, the resilient BayBears tied up the game once again. With a runner on second and two outs, a RBI single from third baseman Matt Davidson knotted up the game at two apiece. That single by Davidson was also the first hit given up by Stars starting pitcher Brian Baker all game, snapping his no-hit bid after 5.2 innings.

With the game tied in the bottom half of the tenth inning and Stars reliever Darren Byrd in the game, the BayBears clinched their sixth home win in a row versus the Stars. After a leadoff single by second baseman David Nick, a sacrifice bunt by Perez and a walk by pinch-hitter Wladimir Sutil, Byrd was taken out of the game in favor of RHP Brandon Kintzler.

To begin his outing, Kintzler intentionally walked center fielder Frey to load the bases and got Chris Owings to pop out. Unfortunately, with two outs, right fielder Marc Krauss sent a long drive off the wall in right field to end the ballgame.

For the Stars, the loss wasted a tremendous outing from Baker. The 29-year-old righty earned a no-decision while giving up just two runs on one hit in seven innings of work. With the loss, Byrd fell to 2-4 on the season.

On offense, while out-hitting Mobile by an 11-4 margin, Huntsville left 12 runners on base, including six in scoring position. Prince, Statia, and first baseman Hunter Morris paced the Stars bats with two hits apiece.

The Stars will continue a three-game series at Hank Aaron Stadium on Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.

I like Halestorm better but they are more metal/hard rock than Dead Sara plus Lzzy Hale has a better voice in my opinion.
