Alex Cohen is the new play-by-play voice of the Stars; follow him on Twitter @alexmcohen. It's fantastic that Huntsville is returning to what will be a traditional broadcast format this year. All games, home and away, are scheduled to be broadcast.

MiLB.TV subsciption note: Huntsville road games in four locales (Mississippi, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Pensacola) will be broadcast.

**********

Brevard County: RHP Drew Gagnon at home vs. Tampa (Yankees), 5:35 PM gametime

Sorry, no audio for this series...

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

**********

Wisconsin: RHP Kevin Shackelford at Cedar Rapids (Angels), 6:15 PM pre-game, 6:35 gametime

Free Live Audio Link - 1280 AM WNAM

Chris Mehring is back to do his customary fantastic work as the Voice of the Rattlers. Follow him on Twitter @CMehring; we'll link to Chris' infamous blog often -- Rattler Radio.

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; Wisconsin is one of only two (Great Lakes) Midwest League clubs that have all their home games available via MiLB.TV; Chris' call provides the audio. So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and 24 Stars' road games (one Helena series this summer, too).

Mondesi promises discipline

Son of former Major Leaguer learning from mistakes in Helena

By Greg Rachac / Special to MLB.com

When asked to describe the incident that has so far defined his young Minor League career, Raul Mondesi Jr. isn't very forthcoming.

The 19-year-old Helena Brewers outfielder would rather talk about his rich baseball lineage, his attributes on the field or his dedication to the game. He'd rather forget the monumental gaffe he made in the Brewers' 2-1 loss to Missoula on June 25.

"I know I made a mistake," Mondesi said. "I learned from it and it will not happen again."

In case you didn't see it on Deadspin or YouTube (yes, it went viral), here's a recap: Mondesi hit what would have been a game-tying, two-run homer in the 10th inning against Missoula, but he failed to touch home plate. The Osprey appealed, and Mondesi was called out to end the game.

The game had been contentious up to that point, Mondesi recalled. Ty Linton hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th to give Missoula the lead. Helena reliever Manuel Ruiz had already hit Rudy Flores, then followed Linton's homer by plunking Daniel Pulfer.

"We were going to fight," Mondesi said.

So, when Mondesi homered over the center-field wall to tie the game again with two outs in the bottom half of the inning off Missoula reliever Dexter Price, he wanted to make a point -- one that would resonate beyond simply getting the best of his opponent in a clutch situation.

"When I hit the home run, when I was going to touch home plate, I started doing this," said Mondesi, demonstrating the taunting gesture he cast toward Missoula's dugout. "I did not focus on touching the plate. I didn't see it."

Osprey catcher Michael Perez noticed Mondesi did not touch the plate and asked for an appeal. Sure enough, Mondesi was called out and the game was over.

"You're going to see some things at this level that make you say, 'Wow. What's the thought process there?' Brewers manager Jeff Isom said. "We'll tell our guys it's OK to make mistakes, but you have to learn from them and not make the same ones again.

"I hadn't heard of anything like that happening before, but it happened to us. We talked with Raul about it and told him he has to learn from it. There's nothing he can do about it now. It's in the past. Let's just move on to the future and be more attentive to details."

Mondesi is the son of former big leaguer Raul Mondesi. The elder Mondesi played 16 seasons in the Majors and won Rookie of the Year in 1994 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Like his son, he played in the Pioneer League, spending his first year of professional baseball with Great Falls in 1990.

Mondesi is said to have a great arm like his father did, as his six assists entering the games of July 4 attest to. He's still trying to get acclimated at the plate, though -- he was hitting .203 with just six RBIs in 64 at-bats. He had struck out a league-high 24 times.

Mondesi is adjusting to the professional game, just like any young player, regardless of who his father is. And regardless of the mistakes he's made.

"You try to be a good baseball player because wherever you go in a ballpark or a game and they say, 'Mondesi Jr.,' people think 'Raul Mondesi,'" he said. "So you have to try to do things right because you're representing him. You're his son.

"I know this game brings ups and downs. You can have a tough day today, but tomorrow you can come and be the hero for your team. It's all about fun. You have to have fun and enjoy it."

I think it's pretty funny how much has been made of that one gaffe. What "defines" his young career to me so far is a lot of physical talent, and pretty good success.

Audio from Memphis — “(Tyler) Thornburg’s Thoughts”

Jeff's note --Tonight's pregame interview is with Sounds right-hander Tyler Thornburg, who discusses his Sounds debut and victory last night in Memphis, his two weeks between starts due to the wrist injury, his time at Double-A Huntsville, how he found out about his major league call-up for June 19 at Miller Park against Toronto, what he enjoyed most about his major league debut and why he's, at least partially, living out of his car these days.

Thursday's DSL Brewers at DSL Blue Jays game has been postponed.

The teams next meet at the Jays' park on the 17th, but the DSL may make the game up on the 10th when the teams meet at the Brewers' complex. So one of the next two Tuesday's should have a doubleheader.

Tonight's Manatee starting pitcher, Drew Gagnon, was Joe Block's pre-game guest on the big-league pre-game Wednesday (audio link)

Did I hear correctly that he quit throwing his 2 seam FB? I wonder why? It's a great inside pitch against righties... it doesn't help him establish the outside part of the plate, that's for sure, but that's where the 4 seam or cutter come into play. Reconsider Drew!

Manatees starting pitcher Drew Gagnon threw six scoreless innings and struck out seven hitters. He did not factor in the decision as Brevard County lost to the Tampa Yankees 1-0 on Thursday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees could only muster one hit and four base runners on Thursday night as they were blanked by the Tampa Yankees, 1-0 at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County starting pitcher Drew Gagnon (0-0, 2.25) recorded his second quality start in as many outings as a Manatee. He threw six shutout innings and allowed just three hits, while fanning seven Tampa hitters.

Equally impressive was Tampa starter Nik Turley who hurled six innings of one-hit ball, while striking out six. It was the fourth time this season that the 'Tees faced Turley as he improved to 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA against Brevard. The Manatees (8-6 second half, 37-45 overall) have struck out 23 times in 21 innings against the Tampa (8-6, 38-43) southpaw.

Thomas Keeling relieved Gagnon in the seventh and retired the first two hitters, but then allowed the only run of the game on a two-out solo homer to Gary Sanchez. Keeling then walked back-to-back hitters and then a wild pitch put runners on second and third. He was able to get out of the inning by striking out Mason Williams.

Brevard had a chance to tie the game in the ninth as Reggie Keen reached on a walk with one out. Keen then stole second and reached third on a throwing error by Sanchez. But Keen would be stranded on third as Nick Shaw and Jason Rogers went down on back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

The Manatees and Yankees will close out their three-game set on Friday night at 6:35 p.m.

Taylor Jungmann (6-4, 3.51) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees. The 2011 first round draft pick has a 1.98 ERA in two starts this season against Tampa. The Yanks will send Jose A. Ramirez (2-4, 3.83) to the mound.

Box Score

Dead wood for the Manatees.

Drew Gagnon was fantastic though. I really cannot be much more pleased with the season he is putting together. Tonight: 6 IP 3 H 0 R 2 BB 7 K 1 HBP 3:3 GO:FO. In a pitching staff full of pedigee, Gagnon has the numbers that jump out at you most. Thomas Keeling gave up that homer to top prospect Gary Sanchez.

Reggie Keen was the lone bright spot in the batter's box with a walk and hit to go along with 2 steals.

Game Log

Kudos to the closer. That 2-hole is not the same with Mittelstaedt occupying it as he had been for a couple of weeks.

Brevard County Bottom of the 9th

Pitcher Change: Mark Montgomery replaces Manuel Barreda.

John Dishon grounds out, shortstop Jose Mojica to first baseman Kyle Roller.

Reggie Keen walks.

With Nick Shaw batting, Reggie Keen steals (27) 2nd base, . Reggie Keen advances to 3rd, on throwing error by catcher Gary Sanchez.

Nick Shaw strikes out swinging.

Jason Rogers strikes out swinging.

Lots of pretty Gagnon innings.

Final: Wisconsin 3, Cedar Rapids 5

Stamets steals the show

Kernels top Rattlers 5-3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3 Thursday night at Perfect Game Field. Eric Stamets had three hits, scored two runs, drove in two runs, and stole a base to lead the Kernels past Wisconsin.

Brandon Macias started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Mitch Haniger was next and he doubled. A two-out RBI single by Ben McMahan put the Rattlers (51-32 overall, 7-7 second half) up 2-0.

But, the Kernels (36-48, 4-10) came back in the bottom of the first. Stamets hit a solo homer with one out. Alex Yarbrough was next and he tripled. A sacrifice fly by Gary Mitchell drove in Yarbrough with the tying run.

Stamets struck again in the bottom of the second. Cedar Rapids had a runner on and two outs when an error extended the inning to Stamets. The sixth round pick of the Angels from the 2012 draft made Wisconsin pay with an RBI single to put the Kernels up 3-2.

Yadiel Rivera tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Rivera lifted a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left for his ninth home run of the year to even the game 3-3.

Stamets was a big part of the two-run Kernels rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. He reached on a two-out infield single that deflected off the glove of Rattlers starting pitcher Kevin Shackelford to put runners at first and third. Then, Stamets stole second base to get two runners in scoring position. Yarbrough came through with a two run single to left-center and the Kernels took a 5-3 lead.

Michael Strong took over on the mound for the Timber Rattlers in the bottom of the fifth inning and kept the Kernels in check. The lefty out of Oklahoma State allowed two hits and struck out eight over four scoreless innings.

But, the Kernels bullpen didn't crack after De Jiulio worked a scoreless fifth. Carmine Giardina struck out seven over three innings. Ty Kelley came on and retired the side in order in the ninth for his twelfth save.
