Brevard County: RHP Andy Moye at home vs. Tampa (Yankees), 5:35 PM gametime

Sorry, no audio for this series...

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Wisconsin: RHP David Goforth at Cedar Rapids (Angels), 4:45 PM pre-game, 5:05 gametime

Chris Mehring is back to do his customary fantastic work as the Voice of the Rattlers. Follow him on Twitter @CMehring; we'll link to Chris' infamous blog often -- Rattler Radio.

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; Wisconsin is one of only two (Great Lakes) Midwest League clubs that have all their home games available via MiLB.TV; Chris' call provides the audio. So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and 24 Stars' road games (one Helena series this summer, too).

Much like most every Sunday, I won't be available when the various media notes come out, so this reminder:

***

Look for Nashville and Wisconsin media notes at the links just prior to their game times.

Huntsville is posting theirs more consistently. Rest your pointer under the "Roster" banner on the Stars' home page to see the link.

Self-indulgent toot of my own horn --

I scored the second-best nationwide Tuesday in MLB.com's Million Dollar Pick 'Em by correctly picking 13 of the 15 Tuesday games. (If you pick all games correctly on a Tuesday-Friday combo, you win $1 million.)

So now I'm in the running for the best weekly combined score, and that's $1,000 (not quite $1 million), wish me luck.

I was trying to watch Thornburg's start on one computer and Sheets' start on another while listening to Chris call the Rattlers game on the radio so I wasn't completely focused on any one game but from what I saw it looked like Thornburg pitched pretty well. Two runs on five hits but I didn't see anything hit really hard off of him. I know he gave up two to the opposing pitcher that were just little flares. He had six strikeouts.

If anyone's interested, Sheets went 5 innings, gave up four runs but also struck out six for AA Mississippi. He started off a little rocky, giving up back to back triples to start the game but settled down and had a pretty easy 3rd, 4th and 5th before hitting his pitch count. They said on the broadcast the plan was for him to make at least one more AA start but the Braves are eager to get him in their rotation. I saw him drop a couple of those big old Ben Sheets hooks that just froze guys.

Final: Wisconsin 10, Cedar Rapids 9

Rattlers rocket past Kernels with big eighth inning

Wisconsin rallies; then, holds on to win at Cedar Rapids

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Chadwin Stang was not in the original starting lineup on Wednesday night for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. But, the late addition to the starting lineup contributed in a big way for Wisconsin's 10-9 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field. Stang lowered the boom on the Kernels with a grand slam home run in a six run eighth inning to bring Wisconsin all the way back from an early 5-1 deficit. Rattlers first baseman Nick Ramirez, who also homered for Wisconsin, had four hits and three RBI in the game.

The Timber Rattlers (51-31 overall, 7-6 second half) grabbed the lead early. They had runners at the corners with no outs in the top of the second after a double by Ben McMahan and a single by Ramirez. Cameron Garfield grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to get the runner on third home.

But, the Kernels (35-48, 3-10) responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Rattlers starting pitcher David Goforth retired the first batter, but walked the next two batters. Then, Zach Borenstein sent a grounder to first that was misplayed and a run scored to tie the game. Trevor Hairgrove singled to drive in the go ahead run. Kevin Moesquit followed with a two-run double and the Kernels led 4-1.

Cedar Rapids manager Jamie Burke was ejected before the second inning rally started. He was run from the game for arguing with the plate umpire about the strike zone after the second batter of the inning took a strike.

The Rattlers rallied in the top of the sixth inning. McMahan tripled with one out and Ramirez got him home with a double. Max Walla singled in a run with two outs and Wisconsin was within two runs.

But, the Kernels answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to go back up by three. A two out double by Chevy Clarke knocked in a run for a 6-3.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but could only manage one run on an RBI grounder by McMahan and the Rattlers were within a pair of runs again.

Cedar Rapids had another answer when they scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI grounder by Zach Borenstein to make the score 7-3.

The Kernels went to 2012 draft pick RJ Alvarez for the eighth inning. The third round pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim had appeared in six games prior to Wednesday night. He had allowed no runs on three hits with a walk and eleven strikeouts in seven innings since joining the Kernels from Florida Atlantic University. He would not get out of the eighth.

Yadiel Rivera started the inning with a single. Walla followed with a walk. Carlos George was hit by a pitch and the Rattlers had the bases loaded with no outs for the second inning in a row.

Stang worked the count to 3-2 and lined a homer over the wall in left field for a grand slam and an 8-7 lead. The home run was the fourth of the season for Stang and his first since April 29.

Ramirez stepped in to the box two outs later with a runner at second base and put a ball into orbit for his seventh home run of the season and a 10-7 lead. Ramirez has seven home runs this season and has homered in two straight games.

Tommy Toledo took the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning with that 10-7 lead. The leadoff batter reached on an error, but the Rattlers closer retired the next two batters. Zach Wright, a 12th round pick of the Angels in the 2012 draft, cracked a two-run homer to left-center and the Kernels cut Wisconsin's lead to a single run.

Toledo would get the next batter to pop out to third base to end the game.

Game two of the series in Cedar Rapids is Thursday night. Kevin Shackelford (1-2, 4.89) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Kernels have Frank De Jiulio (3-2, 6.70) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Wisconsin Box Score

How appropriate that there were all kinds of fireworks in Cedar Rapids on the 4th of July. What an exciting game. The Rattlers fell behind early as the Kernels put up four in the second inning off starter David Goforth. Cedar Rapids got one more in the fifth off of Goforth before he was lifted. He wound up going 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Stosh Wawrzasek finished out the sixth but surrendered a run in the seventh. Stephen Peterson pitched the next inning and a third and set himself up for his second win of the season after the Rattlers bats exploded late. Tommy Toledo pitched the ninth and did give up two unearned runs after giving up a two run homer following a Yadiel Rivera error, but Toledo buckled down and got the last out to earn his 5th save.

Nick Ramirez had a huge night at the plate with a 4 for 5 performance that included his seventh home run. He also had a pair of doubles, three RBI and scored two runs. Chadwin Stang wasn't even in the initial starting lineup but took advantage of the late change, going 3 for 6 with a double and a grand slam. Ben McMahan also had three hits, a single, double and a triple while scoring two runs. Ramirez, Stang and McMahan all fell just one hit shy of a cycle. Ramirez and Stang needed triples and McMahan needed a home run. Max Walla reached base twice with a walk and a single and Carlos George was also on twice with a single and was hit by a pitch. Speaking of hit by a pitch, Brandon Macias was hit for the 15th time this season.

Final: Chattanooga 1, Huntsville 5

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars snapped their four game losing streak behind yet another solid start from Hiram Burgos. Burgos has to be right in the mix for the Brewers organizational pitcher of the year. I'll be honest, I didn't see this coming from him going in to the season, but he has been fantastic. Tonight's line was 6 innings of one run ball. He did allow six hits, but struck out seven. Darren Byrd, Mitch Stetter and Brandon Kintzler each threw one inning of scoreless relief.

Offensively the Stars five runs came on seven hits. Josh Prince was 2 for 4 with a sac fly and stole two more bases to give him 28 for the season. Kentrail Davis stayed hot, going 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. He has now hit in 9 of his last 10 games. Hainley Statia was on base three times with a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. He scored 2 of Huntsville's 5 runs. Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris and Anderson De La Rosa had the other Huntsville hits. Gennett also stole his 8th base.

Hunstville Play By Play

The Stars padded their lead thanks to some wildness from Luis Vasquez

Huntsville Bottom of the 8th

Hainley Statia grounds into a force out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to shortstop Jake Lemmerman. Hunter Morris out at 2nd. Hainley Statia to 1st.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Lee Haydel replaces Mitch Stetter.

Defensive Substitution: Pedro Baez replaces pitcher Wes Roemer, batting 2nd, playing third base.

Gomez's homer lifts 'Tees past Tampa

VIERA, Fla. - With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Hector Gomez's solo shot broke a 4-4 tie as the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Tampa Yankees 5-4 in front of a jam-packed Space Coast Stadium on the 4th of July.

Andy Moye started for the 'Tees (8-5 second half, 37-44 overall) and gave up three runs in six innings of work in his third consecutive quality start. He walked three and tied a season-high with five strikeouts. Moye was in line for the loss as Tampa's Kyle Roller hit a two-run homer off of him in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and give the Yanks (7-6, 37-43) a 3-1 lead.

Brevard started a rally in the bottom of the sixth that started with a Nick Shaw single and a Jason Rogers walk, which chased Tampa start Matt Tracy from the game. Sean Black came in and walked Brock Kjeldgaard to load the bases. Cody Hawn then singled to center to plate Shaw and cut Tampa's lead to 3-2. RBI groundouts by Gomez and Joey Paciorek gave the Manatees a 4-3 lead to close out six innings of play.

Brian Garman relieved Moye in the seventh and threw a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts, but led the eighth inning off with a walk to Slade Heathcott. After back-to-back strikeouts, Garman exited the game in favor of Brevard's closer Casey Medlen.

Heathcott would steal second with Zach Wilson at the dish and then take third on a missed catch error by Gomez on the throw down by Paciorek. Wilson then drove in Heathcott with a single to left to tie the game.

Gomez would redeem himself in the bottom of the frame with two outs, as he took the 1-0 offering from Black and crushed it over the left center to give Brevard County a 5-4 lead.

Medlen returned to the mound for the ninth and retired the side and sent the Brevard County crowd into a frenzy as the 'Tees opened their six-game homestand with a win.

Brevard County and Tampa will continue their three-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Drew Gagnon will get his second start for the 'Tees.

In his first start, Gagnon (0-0, 4.50) got the win against Tampa last Saturday as he struck out five in six innings. Tampa will counter with southpaw Nik Turley (3-3, 3.61).

Box Score

Really a fantastic win and a fantastic game story tonight. I will defer most of the game specifics to that, as usual for Brevard County.

Jason Rogers (0-2 2 BB) keeps making it happen. Cody Hawn (2-4) had a good day and Hector Gomez (1-4 HR) hit the game winner but also committed his 4th error already.

Andy Moye threw a quality start and was bailed out of a loss in Greinke-ian fashion. Still 7-0 on the year for Moye. Brian Garman and Casey Medlen were terrific over the final 3 allowing 0 ER and striking out 6.

Independent Record | Posted: Thursday, July 5, 2012 12:00 am

The Helena Brewers rallied for an 8-7 victory Wednesday night in Billings to snap a four-game losing streak, despite three home runs from Mustangs designated hitter Robert Maddox.

Helena (5-12) entered the top of the eighth inning down two runs.

Second baseman Adrian Williams and left fielder Ruben Ozuna drew walks to begin the inning, and shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez hit a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over. But Billings pitcher Bennett Klimesh committed a throwing error, and both Williams and Ozuna scored to tie the game at 7-all. Rodriguez, meanwhile, advanced to third base.

Mustangs manager Pat Kelly was then ejected for arguing a call, and Helena designated hitter Chris McFarland followed that with a sacrifice fly to plate Rodriguez for the winning run.

Center fielder Michael Reed paced Helena at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a home run, a walk and three RBIs.

Maddox finished 3 for 4 with three home runs and five RBIs for the Mustangs, who moved to 10-7.

Sounds Win 6-4 Over Memphis On Independence Day

Thornburg Picks Up Victory In Triple-A Debut

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds beat the division-rival Memphis Redbirds, 6-4, on Independence Day at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series.

Shortstop Edwin Maysonet went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored while Corey Patterson went yard for the second straight game.

Nashville starter Tyler Thornburg (1-0) picked up a victory in his Triple-A debut. The 23-year-old gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six with 66 pitches (49 strikes) in five innings of work.

Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first against Thornburg. Pete Kozma singled to center, stole second base, and scored on a RBI base hit from Brandon Dickson.

Nashville went ahead at 4-1 in the fifth, beginning with three consecutive hits to lead off the frame. First baseman Jordan Brown doubled, move to third on a single from second baseman Eric Farris, and scored as Maysonet singled to left.

· AUDIO: Maysonet RBI Single

Two batters later, outfielder Caleb Gindl extended his season-best hitting streak to eight games with an RBI double to right center. Patterson then went yard over the right field wall for his sixth long ball of the season.

· AUDIO: Patterson Goes Yard

Memphis trimmed the lead in half in the next frame with two doubles, highlighted by the second hit from Dickson.

The Sounds added two insurance runs in the next inning to lead 6-2. Outfielder Jay Gibbons reached on a fielding error by Kozma and scored on the next play as catcher Jason Jaramillo knocked an RBI double to left. Two batters later, Farris hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Jaramillo.

The Redbirds cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Robert Wooten. With runners on second and third and two outs, Steven Hill hit a two-run single to center field.

Donovan Hand tossed two scoreless innings to extend his scoreless streak to 19.0 straight innings over his last 11 outings. Wooten surrendered two runs on 2/3 of an inning. Jim Henderson converted the four-out save to end the game for his team-leading ninth of the season.

Memphis starter Brandon Dickson (4-8) scattered eight hits for six runs (four earned) in 5 2/3 innings. The Redbirds pitcher also went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue their five-game series at 7:05 pm CT on Thursday night at AutoZone Park. Nashville right-hander Seth McClung (2-9, 4.82) takes the hill against Memphis southpaw John Gast (5-2, 5.75).

Nashville Box Score

In case you're wondering Tyler Thornburg threw so few pitches after reading the game story I think this is why... In his last game at AA he was ejected and only threw about 80 pitches, then he didn't pitch for 10 days when he made his appearance for the big club on June 19th which was also around 80 pitches, then didn't pitch again until today. Long story short, he basically threw 160 pitches in 4 weeks and appeared to be on 5 inning or 80 pitch outing, whichever came first. He was exceedingly efficient though with 49 of those 66 pitches being strikes, that's a very good sign. Anecdotal evidence would suggest that he's one of those personalities that guys gravitate too because all he does is win everywhere he goes. Ohh yea, down with the Cards!

Final: DSL Brewers 2, DSL Angels 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

What a weird season, I keep lucking out getting to LR on the teams that are on hot streaks or just pretty darn good. Once again the pitching was fantastic, this time 21 year old Juan Santiago lit up the board for 7 innings allowing just 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch against 7 strike outs. Junior Flores pitched the final 2 innings allowing a hit, a balk, and walk against 2 strike outs.

On the position player side of things Raphachel Colatosti went 2-4, Carlos Belonis went 2-4 with a double, Juan Ortiz went 2-4, and finally Natanael Mejia who was the DH today also went 2-4 keeping his season average a right tight .500! I should also mention Alejandro Mendoza who went 1-2 with 2BB and a caught stealing in the contest. Belonis and Ortiz each stole a base, their 15th and 6th respectively.

Kernels, fans endure heat, tough 10-9 loss to Wisconsin

Jeff Johnson, Cedar Rapids Gazette

CEDAR RAPIDS – Jamie Burke is the smartest man in America.

The Cedar Rapids Kernels manager was ejected in the second inning of Wednesday’s sweat-athon against Wisconsin at Veterans Memorial Stadium, his first career dump.

There’s air conditioning in the Kernels clubhouse, so the skipper didn’t have to be out in the 98-degree heat, let alone watch his club blow a late lead and lose, 10-9.

“I just felt like the strike zone was a little low,” explained Burke, who watched part of the game from the tunnel behind home plate. “It wasn’t like I said anything rude. That’s the first time I’ve ever been tossed out, and it wasn’t something I was looking forward to. I was just protecting my players.”

Burke theorized the umpiring crew of Mike Huus and Luke Engen may have been carrying a grudge from last week, when the Kernels were in Quad Cities and had issues with some key calls that went against them. Everyone’s fuse is a little shorter in weather like this.

“I’m kind of used to it, being from North Carolina,” shrugged Kernels catcher Zach Wright. “In the summers, the temperature on the field back home would get up to like 120 degrees. I mean, it’s hot out there, for sure. But I feel like it’s a dry heat.”

Wright said he figures he lost “maybe three or four pounds” in water weight behind the plate. He had to change undershirts during the game.

Kernels trainer Omar Uribe always makes sure there is plenty of Gatorade and water for his players in the dugout. Dipping faces in ammonia towels also is very popular and refreshing.

“On our end, it’s just really (reminding them) in passing ‘Hey, get some water in you,’” he said. “We’ve got a bunch of guys here that are pretty responsible with stuff like that. A lot of guys are from areas that are like this already … A lot of our guys are a little older. We don’t have a bunch of high-school kids that you might have to worry about.”

Kernels management dispersed 5,000 pounds of ice to fans Wednesday, scooping it into paper cups. Ice lines were long, as you’d imagine.

Despite the hottest day of the year, the attendance was 4,114.

“Ice was our best seller today,” Kernels General Manager Doug Nelson joked. “We ran out here and had to run across the street to the Ice Arena to get some more.”

Cedar Rapids (35-48) dropped to 3-10 in the second half with another punch-in-the-stomach loss. The Kernels led after six innings, 6-3, but relief pitcher R.J. Alvarez was torched for two home runs and six runs in the seventh.

Chadwin Stang hit a grand slam to put the Timber Rattlers (51-37 overall) up for good. Nick Ramirez added a mammoth two-run shot to right.

The parent Angels’ top draft pick in June (114th overall), Alvarez has impressed with his mid-90s heat (pun intended) and had allowed just three hits and no runs over seven innings coming into the game. It’s been that kind of a second half thus far for the Kernels.

“He’s not going to have outings like that,” Burke said. “He’s not going to have many of them, I’ll tell you that. Today was just his day.”

Wright’s two-run homer with two outs in the ninth brought Cedar Rapids within a run, but Zach Borenstein popped to third to end it.

Cedar Rapids Kernels General Manager Doug Nelson (green) and Kernels employee Ron "Roady" Plein pass out cups of ice to fans Wednesday.
