Taylor Wall pitched 3 very fine innings after Shaub. 3 IP 3 H 0 R 1 BB 3 K 3:0 GO:FO for Wall. I thought Steve said he weighed 290, but a quick check revealed I was 100 lbs off. Martin Viramontes got shelled a bit in the 10th. Connor Whalen came in the game to bail out Martin and promptly gave up a 2-run 2B that brought the the score to 6-5 Brewers. A weak tapper to second base ended the game for Whalen and the Brewers as they won it.

 

Micahel Garza (4-5 3B) has been feasting on 1st pitch FB's since turning pro. Adam Giacolone's (1-3 2B BB) run scoring 2B was not hit all that hard, but it got him off the schneid a bit. Alfredo Rodriguez (1-4 2B BB) had a huge 10th inning hit.

 

Raul Mondesi Jr. (1-4 BB) threw out a runner at 3rd. That's 5.

Nashville Takes Series With 2-0 Shutout In Round Rock

Sounds Blank Express Twice In Three Games

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds blanked the Round Round Express, 2-0, on Friday night at The Dell Diamond in the finale of a three-game series. The shutout was Nashville's PCL-leading eighth of the season and second in three games over the Express.

 

With the win, Nashville (33-49) picked up only their second winning series on the road this season and finished 3-4 overall on the seven-game road trip through Albuquerque and Round Rock.

 

Nashville starter Brian Baker (2-3) authored his best pitching performance of the season to pick up the win. The 29-year-old threw six scoreless innings on six hits and no walks while striking out six. Baker is record a 0.79 ERA (1er/11.1ip) in his last three outings (two starts).

 

Relievers Johnnie Lowe, Mike McClendon, and Jim Henderson followed with scoreless frames to collect the combination shutout.

 

First baseman Sean Halton accounted for two of Nashville's five hits and also scored a run. Second baseman Eric Farris went 0-for-3 to snap a nine-game hitting streak, which matches his best effort of the year.

 

The game remained scoreless until the Sounds scored their first run in the visiting half of the fifth inning. After one-out base hits from Halton and outfielder Corey Patterson, shortstop Edwin Maysonet hit a fly ball to right field to score Halton on a sacrifice fly.

Nashville scored their other run in the seventh as Round Rock committed two costly fielding errors. Oufielder Jay Gibbons reached on a fielder's choice and was followed by another hit from Halton. Patterson then loaded the bases after reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher.

 

On the ensuing at-bat against reliever Johan Yan, Maysonet grounded to shortstop Luis Hernandez, who made the second fielding gaff of the frame to allow Gibbons to score.

With runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth, Henderson struck out Round Rock's Michael Bianucci to end the game and pick up his seventh save.

Former Sound Zach Jackson took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

 

The Sounds travel home to welcome the division-rival Iowa Cubs (AAA-Cubs) to Music City for a four game series for the first time this season. Nashville right-hander Seth McClung (1-9, 5.19) will toe the rubber against Iowa southpaw Brooks Raley (4-2, 4.14)

As Mass Haas noted in the thread title, Hiram Burgos was outstanding. And he did it against a Mobile offense that had scored 7.7 runs per game through the first three of this five-game series. The only run Burgos let in tonight came after he was charged an error on a pickoff attempt in the 2nd. He surrendered a leadoff double, and promptly threw the ball away. The runner advanced to 3B, and later scored when Burgos induced a double play. From that point, the Bay Bears only managed five baserunners (3 H, 1 BB, 1 E) until Burgos left the game after the 7th. His line: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R/0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 9:4 GO:AO, 1 HBP... and he even chipped in with a hit, 1-3 on the game.

 

The Stars bats didn't manage anything more than singles tonight, but got three straight two-out singles to plate three runs in the 3rd. Hunter Morris, Hainley Statia, and Anderson De La Rosa were the offending trio. Huntsville tacked on one more in the 5th, when Statia came up with his second two-out RBI single. Thankfully, four runs was just enough tonight.

 

SS Josh Prince (not a typo) didn't play his first game of the season at shortstop tonight (credited with 2 at BB-reference.com), but it sure had been a while. He went 0-3 with one BB, was charged a throwing error to open the top half of the 5th, and a 6th inning Mobile single was scored as "sharp groundball to shortstop". Prince also turned a 6-3 double play in the 2nd. I don't think one game is worth using as any kind of opinion on his defense, but it's nice to see the Brewers using him there again. We'll have to see if this is just a one game fill-in, or if he's been moved back to short.

 

Scooter Gennett bounced back from his 0-fer yesterday with a 2-4 game. Statia & De La Rosa both finished 3-4, and Morris was 1-4. Lee Haydel went 0-3 with one BB and one SB. Kentrail Davis was 0-3 with a sac bunt, and Juan Sanchez went 0-4.

 

Darren Byrd pitched around two walks to keep Mobile off the scoreboard in the 8th, but Jesus Sanchez saw his 5-game scoreless streak come to an end. Sanchez surrendered four singles and two runs, but was able to get that 27th out on a called third strike.

Rattlers beat Peoria 8-7 in ten innings for fourth straight win

GRAND CHUTE, WI - On Saturday night, it was Rafael Neda's turn at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers catcher drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the tenth inning to beat the Peoria Chiefs 8-7. Neda also hit his first professional homer in the game to help the Rattlers come back to win their fourth straight game.

 

Wisconsin (48-29 overall, 4-4 second half) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on the first of four Peoria errors.

 

The Chiefs (38-39, 3-5) took the lead in the top of the third inning by sending ten men to the plate against Wisconsin starting pitcher David Goforth. They scored six runs on five hits and three Wisconsin errors. Pin-Chieh Chen completed a streak of three straight singles to start the inning and drove in the tying run. Zeke DeVoss dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runners along, but the throw to first by Goforth was wild to allow a run to score. Next, Taiwan Easterling's grounder to third base was mishandled for an error and Chen scored for a 3-1 lead.

 

That play also put runners on first and third with no outs. Easterling would steal second and the throw skipped to past second to let DeVoss score. Later in the inning, Paul Hoilman and Anthony Giansanti had RBI singles for a 6-1 lead.

 

It didn't take long for Wisconsin to rally. Nick Ramirez started the comeback with a single to start the fourth. Then, Ben McMahan hit a two-run homer into the Timber Rattlers bullpen. Yadiel Rivera reached on an error to bring Neda to the plate. Neda lined a 2-2 pitch down the left field line. The ball stayed fair and Wisconsin pulled to within 6-5.

 

Carlos George kept the pressure on with a bunt and reached on an error. Lance Roenicke followed with a double to move George to third. Chadwin Stang tied the game at six with a sacrifice fly.

 

Goforth settled in after his rough third inning to work two more scoreless innings. He did have to pitch his way out of a jam in the sixth. Javier Baez tripled to start the inning, but Goforth got a strikeout and - after Yasiel Balaguert reached on a fielder's choice that kept Baez at third base - an inning ending double play to keep the game tied.

 

Peoria would go in front in the seventh inning. Stephen Peterson allowed a run on a two-out wild pitch that let DeVoss score from third for a 7-6 lead.

 

Ramirez brought the Rattlers back in the eighth. Wisconsin's first baseman hit a long home run down the right field line to lead off the inning. The blast came against Yao-Lin Wang, the Peoria closer. Wang has ten saves this season and has blown two saves. Both blown saves are against Wisconsin.

 

Rattlers closer Tommy Toledo pitched a perfect ninth and a perfect tenth to set up Wisconsin's eight walkoff hit of the season. Greg Hopkins singled to start the rally against Luis Liria. A wild pitch got Hopkins to second, but Liria retired Ramirez with a strikeout. The Chiefs elected to walk McMahan intentionally to set up the double play, but Yadiel Rivera worked the count full and drew a walk to load the bases after falling behind 1-2.

 

Then, Neda lined a 2-2 pitch from Liria through the left side of the infield to drive home Hopkins with the winning run.

 

The final game of the three game series is Saturday night. Mark Williams (4-6, 2.57) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Peoria will counter with Zach Cates (0-1, 1.93). Game time is 6:35pm.

 

REGGY!, the purple party dude returns to the Fox Cities to entertain with his skits and in-game antics. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers All-Star Greg Hopkins. Rafael Neda was the hitting hero for the Rattlers. He went 2 for 5 with his first home run and the game winning hit in the 10th inning. Nick Ramirez also had a 2 for 5 night, including a clutch eighth inning bomb to right field. Ben McMahan had the T-Rats other home run, going 1 for 4 with a walk. Lance Roenicke and Chadwin Stang eached had two hit games as well. Mitch Haniger was 1 for 4 with a walk.

 

David Goforth wound up going six innings, and aside from the third inning blowup, pitched pretty well. He was around 93-94 on the stadium gun but reached back a couple of times and got it up to 96. I wasn't sure he was going to make it out of the third inning, but Matt Erickson showed a lot of patience with him, and Goforth rewarded his manager with three more solid innings. Peoria tried to run quite a bit when they got on base, but Goforth made them pay with a couple of nice pickoffs. Stephen Peterson pitched two innings of relief, giving up one run. Tommy Toledo came on and worked a perfect ninth and tenth to get the win.

 

Defensively the Rattlers committed four errors. One each by Carlos George, Greg Hopkins, Neda and Goforth. On the plus side, Yadiel Rivera is really fun to watch play defense. He had a couple of very nice defensive plays to help out his pitchers.

Not a lot of offense in this one. The Brewers managed only four hits in the game. DH Kevin Martinez was on base three times with a single and a pair of walks. Juan Ortiz had a double and the lone Brewers RBI. Jose Dicent and Natanael Mejia , who was making his 2012 season debut, had the other two hits for the DSL squad. Raphachel Colatosti stole his eighth base of the season.

 

Milton Gomez started and went five innings. He gave up four runs, two earned and struck out three. The bullpen tossed four shutout innings, not allowing a hit. Miguel Diaz worked the sixth and seventh, walking two and striking out two. Joshua Torres , also making his season debut, had a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Doni Arias set the Angels down in order in the ninth, striking out two.

STARS HOLD ON TO BEAT BAYBEARS

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Taking a three-run lead into the ninth inning, the Huntsville Stars held on to defeat the Mobile BayBears by a score of 4-3 on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

For the fourth straight game, the BayBears struck first blood. In the second inning, David Nick doubled to begin the inning. He advanced to third on a botched pickoff attempt by Stars starter Hiram Burgos and scored on a groundout by catcher Ed Easley to give Mobile a 1-0 lead.

 

However, in the third inning, the Stars took the lead for good. Following back-to-back singles by Burgos and left fielder Lee Haydel to start the inning, three consecutive RBI singles by first baseman Hunter Morris, third baseman Hainley Statia and catcher Anderson De La Rosa put the Stars up 3-1.

 

For their eventual game-winning run, the Stars got another RBI single by Statia in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

 

The score stayed that way until the ninth inning where the usually reliable Jesus Sanchez came on to close out the game for the Stars. After one-out singles by Easley and left fielder Vladimir Sutil, back-to-back RBI singles from left fielder Evan Frey and shortstop Chris Owings cut the Stars lead at one with runners on first and second.

 

Fortunately for the Stars, the runners remained there. Sanchez buckled down and struck out third baseman Matt Davidson to notch his 11th save on the season. The save for Sanchez was also his fifth in his last five appearances.

 

Once again, Burgos dazzled on the mound for the Stars. The 24-year-old righty improved to 3-1 on the season after giving up just one run (zero earned) on five hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. By the end of the night, Burgos’s earned run average dropped to a paltry 2.11.

 

On offense, the Stars got three hits apiece from Statia and De La Rosa and a 2-for-4 night at the plate from second baseman Scooter Gennett.

 

The rubber match of a five-game series will begin tomorrow as the Stars will send RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-0, 7.56 ERA) to the mound to square off against Mobile. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Juan Francisco didn't have a good start. Sure he had 5 strikeouts in 3.1 innings. The rest of his line wasn't a good. He gave up 9 base runners and 6 runs (5 earned). Undrafted FA Ryan Fasano came in and got the last two outs of the 4th inning.

Alejandro Lavandero pitched much better in his second professional appearance but still has a ways to go. His final line was 2IP 2 hits 1ER 2BB and one strikeout. Jonathan Armold was the losing pitcher, you can see his ninth inning down below. Just like yesterday, the defense didn't really come to the rescue of the pitchers as there were 4 errors. Clint Coulter definitely has not shown that he can stick behind the plate to this point.

 

The offense was definitely aided by the recovering Khris Davis who hit 2 homers to go with three RBI's in his first rehab game. Jose Pena continues to swing a hot bat as he had 2 hits, including a inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the 4th. Malcolm Dowell replaced Davis in the top of the sixth and had 2 singles of his own and a stolen base. Angel Ortega also had 2 hits and a stolen base.

The league-best A's kids deserve all A's as they move to 8-0 while dropping the A-Crew to a league-worst 1-7. After eight innings, the Maryvale men were hanging tough down just 7-6 before a five-run top of the 9th clinched it.

 

Before going on, I must note that the Oakland pitchers used in this game had a great collection of names -- Kayvon Bahramzadeh, Cody Kurz, Ryan Dull, and Vincent Voiro.

 

Back to the game -- after his third AB in the 5th, catcher Clint Coulter was lifted after watching A's batters go 7-for-7 on the basepaths (one double steal), along with two throwing errors (both throwing to 3rd base directly leading to runs). Coulter was also 0-for-3 with a K, so the first 22 pro AB's have been rough, but not nearly as rough as the defensive woes.

 

(Reserve catcher Deivi Mejia came in and restored sanity, picking off one baserunner and throwing out 1-of-2.)

 

Jose Pena hit an inside-the-park home run on a line drive to center field in the 4th, and added two doubles for good measure. After two miserable DSL seasons, Pena is loving Maryvale -- .324 / .343 / .735. Nine of eleven base knocks for extra bases!

 

By the way, Khris Davis showed the kids how it's done -- step up to the plate twice, blast two HR's.

As Mass Haas noted in the thread title, Hiram Burgos was outstanding. And he did it against a Mobile offense that had scored 7.7 runs per game through the first three of this five-game series. The only run Burgos let in tonight came after he was charged an error on a pickoff attempt in the 2nd. He surrendered a leadoff double, and promptly threw the ball away. The runner advanced to 3B, and later scored when Burgos induced a double play. From that point, the Bay Bears only managed five baserunners (3 H, 1 BB, 1 E) until Burgos left the game after the 7th. His line: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R/0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 9:4 GO:AO, 1 HBP... and he even chipped in with a hit, 1-3 on the game.

 

It was a great game for the Stars last night. Great win for Burgos as he continues to dominate on the mound this year. In the month of June Burgos went 2-0 with a 0.71ERA in 6 starts (38i.p) Great Job
