What kind of animal is this?

Found this guy in my backyard the other day...

 

Kids got a kick out of him, but is it something that can do damage?

 

Finally got him to go away, but where he is now, I don't know.

Looks like a Marmot of some kind.

Looks like a woodchuck to me. And it most likely went back in its hole.

Groundhog and woodchuck are the same thing. That appears to be one. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

We had one that dug a pretty big hole in our yard when I was a kid. We kept filling the hole up with rocks and dirt but he kept digging them back out. We had to resort to "getting rid" of him.

It's a woodchuck. They're pretty laid back unless you corner them (like any animal, of course) We have one that hangs out in our back yard that's kind of a chicken. When birds fly over, he flattens himself out, and doesn't move.

 

But like others have said, they will dig pretty big holes. If you feel like he's a problem, call your local animal control, and they'll come get him. Or you can try live trapping him, and taking him out in the country.
