The GB ratio is nice and all but look at the rest of his season line. Just tonight he walked 6... walks have nothing to do with the defense. This is the same defense that was playing behind Thornburg and Co. in AA most of the season.

Brooks Hall had a rough of of it tonight. Besides this start and the one on May 21st, Hall has pitched pretty darn well. Phillipe Valiquette mopped up for Hall with 3 scoreless 1-hit innings. Wild Thomas Keeling threw a perfect frame with a K. Thomas' control has slowly been improving as his career progresses.

 

Shea Vucinich had a 3-hit day with a 2B combining with Michael Reed (2-3 BB SB (3)) and Mike Walker (2-5) as the only multi-hit hitters. Reed drew the only BB of the night for the 'Tees. Reggie Keen nabbed his 21st base.

 

Walker did commit his team leading 13th error on a missed catch of some sort.

Manatees drop third straight game

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their third game in a row as they were defeated 8-3 by the Daytona Cubs on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Manatees (27-37) starting pitcher Brooks Hall (1-3, 4.89) went just four innings as he allowed seven runs - four earned - on ten hits. Hall ran into trouble in the fourth as he allowed four runs, as the Cubs (29-34) took a 7-2 lead.

 

Hall started the fourth by allowing a lead-off triple to Chad Noble, who scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly. Ronald Torreyes then reached on an error by Mike Walker at first. Nelson Perez and Greg Rohan then had back-to-back singles as Rohan's scored Torreyes.

 

Hall then threw a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with one out. After a sacrifice fly plated the third run of the inning, John Andreoli singled to left to give Daytona a 7-2 lead.

 

Despite 11 hits, the Manatees didn't do much else offensively, as they struck out eight times, left ten men on base and went just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

 

Shea Vucinich led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Walker and Michael Reed both had two hits each. In his first seven games with the 'Tees, the 19-year-old Reed is hitting .400 (8-for-20) with five RBI and three runs scored.

 

Brevard County will look to snap its three game skid as they host the Cubs again on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.

 

Andy Moye (2-0, 5.89) is slated to get the start on the mound for the Manatees. In his only other start against the Cubs back on May 31, Moye allowed six earned runs in five innings of work.

 

Daytona will send Robert Whitenack (0-1, 5.68) to the hill. In his only other start against the Manatees back on May 29, Whitenack went just 4 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on ten hits.

Cubs take opener from 'Tees 8-3

Viera, FL - Another early offensive output powered the Daytona Cubs to their second-straight win, a 8-3 decision over the Brevard County Manatees in the series opener on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Cubs scored twice in the top of the second inning off RHP Brooks Hall (L, 1-3), thanks to an RBI single from DH Richard Jones and a run-scoring double by SS Arismendy Alcantara. The Manatees responded with two in the home half against RHP Eduardo Figueroa. 2B Shea Vucinich led off with a single, and DH Cody Hawn knocked Vucinich in with a triple. C Joey Paciorek capped the rally with an RBI groundout to tie the score at 2-2.

 

Figueroa finished after tossing three innings of two-run, five-hit baseball with no walks and four strikeouts.

 

Daytona took the lead for good with a bases-loaded groundout from Jones in the third, and padded the lead with a four-run fourth inning. C Chad Noble led off with a triple and scored on Alcantara's sacrifice fly. 2B Roni Torreyes then reached on an error, moved to third on LF Nelson Perez' single to right, and scored on 1B Greg Rohan's RBI single. With the one-out base knock, Rohan extended his league-leading RBI total to 55. CF Rubi Silva made it 6-2 with a sacrifice fly, and RF John Andreoli gave the Cubs a four-run cushion with a run-scoring single.

 

Daytona added another run in the ninth on a lead-off homer from LF Nelson Perez. He reached base four times and finished 3-4 with a home run, two singles and two runs scored. Perez is now tied with Rohan for third in the league with 11 homers and is tied for third in the league with 42 RBIs.

 

Hall allowed seven runs #four earned# on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts over four innings of work, and Daytona managed just two hits over the final five innings against LHP Philippe Valiquette, LHP Thomas Keeling, and RHP Eric Marzec.

 

The Cubs bullpen pitched admirably in relief of Figueroa, as RHP Ryan Searle #W, 4-1# and knuckleballer RHP Joseph Zeller combined to pitch four scoreless innings to keep the Manatees at bay. LHP Jeff Lorick tossed the eighth and ninth, allowing one run on two hits.

 

The Cubs and Manatees will square-off again on Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35p.m.

Redbirds Quiet Sounds, 2-0, On Tuesday Night In Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis starting pitcher Nick Additon struck out a career high 11 batters over seven scoreless innings as the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds shut out the Nashville Sounds, 2-0, on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park in the second game of a three-game series.

 

Additon (3-6) allowed just four hits for the win and was followed by scoreless innings from Redbirds relievers Adam Reifer and Jess Todd.

 

Stranding five while going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, Nashville (25-41) out-hit Memphis in the loss, but failed to produce a walk for the sixth time this season.

 

Outfielder Logan Schafer had two hits to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. It was also his fifth multiple-hit contest in his last seven games.

 

Memphis scored their first run in the home half of the third inning against Sounds starter Wily Peralta (1-8). After a one-out single to Cedric Hunter, Peralta walked the next two batters to load the bases before balking home the first run of the game.

 

Nashville was held hitless until first baseman Sean Halton had an infield single in the top of the fifth to extend his hitting streak to a season-best nine games.

 

The Redbirds plated their other run in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases again. Peralta would allow a double sandwiched between two walks before Pete Kozma hit an RBI single to right field. Mark Hamilton scored on the base hit, but Jamie Romak would be thrown out at home by Jay Gibbons.

 

In relief Peralta, right-hander Donovan Hand entered with the bases juices and induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam

 

Peralta dropped his career-high sixth consecutive decision after surrendering two runs on four hits while walking and striking out six. The 23-year-old threw 104 pitches (55 strikes), and his six walks matched a previous high set two starts ago on June 1 at Oklahoma City.

 

Hand tossed 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief while stranding two inherited runners. Robert Wooten worked around a walk for a scoreless frame to end the game.

 

The Sounds and cross-state rival Redbirds will play the finale of a three-game series at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday morning at AutoZone Park. Nashville right-hander Claudio Vargas (1-0, 4.58) makes the start against Memphis righty Brandon Dickson (2-5, 3.14).

Sean Halton broke up the no-hitter and finished 1-4. Logan Schafer went 2-4. Both hits came in crucial spots; to lead off the 7th and with 1 out in the 9th. Schafer proceed to steal 2nd base before the final two hitters of the game struck out.

 

Cards no-name, Nick Addition, does what Cardinals pitchers seem to always do; pitch lights out against the Brewers.

CLINTON, IA - If the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers division clinching victory over the Clinton LumberKings seemed very familiar, it should have been. Wisconsin defeated the Clinton LumberKings 3-1 in ten innings on Tuesday night to pick up their third straight victory in their final turn at the plate. Including Tuesday's game at Ashford University Field, the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers has won fourteen times in their last at bat in 2012.

 

Brandon Macias dished out a little payback with the single that knocked in the go ahead run in the tenth and Jacob Barnes was stellar in relief with nine strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

 

Nick Ramirez got the scoring started for Wisconsin (42-23). He hit a home run to center to lead off the second inning for the Timber Rattlers. But, Clinton starter Brett Shankin would only give up three more hits over his seven innings of work.

 

The LumberKings (23-41) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning against Wisconsin starter Will West. But, they would only get one run off the left hander. Clinton tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Phillips.

 

West would give up six hits over six innings, but kept the game tied. Barnes entered the game in the sixth inning and proceeded to strikeout six of the first seven batters he faced.

 

However, Clinton mounted a rally with one out in the eighth inning. A walk to Dillon Hazlett and a single by Steve Baron put runners on first and second for the LumberKings. Barnes responded by striking out cleanup batter Dan Paolini and picking Hazlett off second to end the threat.

 

The winning rally in the tenth was started by the Rattler who had ended the previous two Wisconsin games with walkoff hits at home. Yadiel Rivera singled to center to lead off the inning. Clinton reliever Kyle Hunter got the first out, but walked John Dishon to put Rattlers on first and second with one out. That brought Macias to the play with a little revenge on his mind.

 

The Rattlers third baseman was 0-for-1 on the night coming to the plate in the tenth, but he had been on base three straight times. Clinton pitchers had hit Macias in the third, sixth, and eighth innings. He would be the one doing the hitting in the tenth as Macias grounded a single to through the infield and into right field. Rivera raced home and easily beat the throw for a 2-1 lead.

 

Dishon, who took third on the throw to the plate when Rivera scored, came home with an insurance run as Max Walla hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to get him home. Dishon's run made it 3-1.

 

Not that Barnes needed any insurance. The right-hander retired the LumberKings in order in the bottom of the tenth to secure the win and the first half division title.

 

Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Matt Miller (4-5, 4.41) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Trevor Miller (3-4, 4.14) is scheduled to start for Clinton. This was an extremely satisfying game to listen to as Chris just sounds like he's having so much fun. Will West got hit around a little bit in the 2nd inning but that was it he went 5 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, and 1 walk against 3 strike outs. Jacob Barnes was lights out, at one point he had struck out 5 of the 6 batters he had faced. Jacob also went 5 innings allowing a walk and a hit against 9(!) strike outs. Just a fantastic effort from the young man.

 

With the Nick Ramirez HR the Rattlers scored first again, I wonder how many times that has happened this season? Maybe Chris will cover it one of his 9s... Ben McMahan extended his streak with a 2-4 effort, he's had a hit in every game since returning from the DL. The Rattlers did make 3 outs at 2nd base, with McMahan and Brandon Macias both getting caught stealing and Gregory Hopkins tried to stretch a single into a double. However Barnes got one of those outs on the bases back with that huge pick off at 2B. I'm loving the emphasis on the running game this season.

Top Cubs prospect Anthony Rizzo left Tuesday's game early with an apparent knee injury, but team president Theo Epstein said the first baseman wasn't seriously hurt.

 

Rizzo walked off the field in the sixth inning with a slight limp but under his own power after sliding into the fence in front of Triple-A Iowa's dugout while attempting to catch a foul ball hit by Omaha's Kurt Mertins. Epstein said Rizzo will be seen by an orthopedist, but that he checked out after seeing Iowa's training staff.

 

"He bumped his knee. .. he'll be OK," Iowa Cubs manager Dave Bialas told the Des Moines Register. "I can't tell you any more than he'll be OK."

 

Rizzo, in line for a promotion as he leads the Pacific Coast League with 22 home runs, has been particularly hot lately with consecutive two-homer, four-RBI games coming into Tuesday.

 

Bialas said he wasn't sure if Rizzo would play on Wednesday. MLB.com' No. 31 top prospect is hitting .367 with 22 home runs and 57 RBIs and leads the Minors with a .753 slugging percentage and 1.182 OPS.

 

Monday's multi-homer game was Rizzo's sixth such performance of the season. In his previous two contests, the 22-year-old first baseman was 6-for-9 with 19 total bases and eight RBIs.

 

Rizzo went 0-for-2 in the 9-4 loss while facing Omaha starter Jake Odorizzi, the Royals' No. 4 prospect, who allowed two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth Triple-A win. Odorizzi struck out seven to improve to 4-0 since his promotion from Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where he was 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA in seven starts.

 

Rehabbing Cubs catcher Geovany Soto went 1-for-4 with a double and a strikeout in his second Minor League game. Soto, 29, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on May 17 and has been on Chicago's 15-day disabled list since.

 

"It's just a matter of getting at-bats and getting my timing back," Soto told the newspaper. "Hopefully I'll get there soon."

Yeah, holy cow how did I miss that he's been with BC? I guess I just assumed he'd be headed for Helena & was in Ext. ST or something. I remembered that he'd been 'assigned' to Huntsville as a paper move, but wow... for him to be doing what he's doing at BC is just awesome.

 

Now watch the uber-conservative Brewers still send him to Helena.

Good news, usual 3B Sthervin Matos was the DH, his first appearance in just under a week.

 

Iron man catcher Carlos Pena singled, walked and drove in a run, and despite all the baserunners, no Brave attempted a steal in this one. Infielder Raphachel Colatosti (who needs to gain some weight, apparently is a hologram), second-year RF Elvis Rubio (still just 17), and rookie 17-year-old Juan Ortiz (nice pro start) all reached base thrice; Cerveceritos reached base seven times via walk or HBP along with eight hits. Nearly all the damage done by the Crew came in a five-run 3rd, in which Braves reliever Jesus Jones allowed both inherited runners to score (had wondered what had ever happened to him - great song).

 

After two scoreless relief appearances to begin his career, 17-year-old Venezuelan RHP Junior Flores didn't find the 3rd time to be the charm; RHP Eduard Reyes (22 this August) was OK in his start (victim of defense, but also three walks, two wild pitches).
