Brevard County: RHP Taylor Jungmann at home vs. Lakeland (Tigers), 5:35 PM gametime

Sorry, no audio for this series...

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

I didn't see this posted anywhere yet but may have missed it on the draft forum.

BA Draft Chat

Tom (Menomonee Falls, WI): Jim, thanks for the chat. Pretty excited about Brewers picking Clint Coulter. If he doesn't stick at catcher like many are suggesting, what position do you think he ends up at?

Jim Callis: First base. Don't think there are a lot of other options, but it's also not like he has no chance to catch. I think he can stick there, just needs time to polish his defense.

Mike (Chelmsford): What are the chances that Rhett Wiseman is able to get a deal done with the Cubs?

Jim Callis: Unlikely. He fell to the 25th round because of signability. That said, the Cubs can probably take some deep discounts in rounds 4-10, so it's possible they could throw all of that money at Wiseman.

GREG (OH): The quest to sign which draftee(s) will create the most drama before the deadline?

Jim Callis: Mark Appel, naturally.

Ben (Leland Grove): How optimistic are you the Pirates lock up Appel?

Jim Callis: I think there's a good chance he signs, but it's no lock. Eyeballing the Pirates' draft, I think they could get up to $4 million for him. I'd be more surprised if Pittsburgh paid him enough to lose a draft pick than I would be if he didn't sign.

AJ (NJ): Hello. I read somewhere that there were an inordinate number of predraft deals this year. Do you think this may have contributed to Appel falling as far as he did?

Jim Callis: Yes. Teams felt the pick values were higher than the worth of the players, especially in the first round, and wanted cost certainty now that they're dealing with finite bonus pools. Teams picking 2-7 didn't have enough time once they found out Appel wasn't going No. 1 to figure out what he'd sign for and adjust the plans they already had in place.

Dan (Chicago): Would you rank Almora ahead of Javier Baez on a list of Cubs top prospects?

Jim Callis: It's close ... would have to see how this season plays out. Baez has more offensive ceiling, Almora a good ceiling and higher floor.

Dan (Chicago): What do you make of Almora's comments about going to college? Should I be concerned he won't sign or are they just Boras tactics?

Jim Callis: He'll sign. I'd be stunned if he didn't.

Benny (Cubs Central): Looking forward to seeing Theo lock up Almora, Underwood and Johnson. Can he get all three done, in your opinion?

Jim Callis: Yes. Combined pick value for those three is $5.3 million, which should be close enough to get it done.

Paula (MN): What led to Trey Williams falling so far? Any chance he signs?

Jim Callis: Didn't have a good spring and turned off a lot of scouts with a lack of intensity. The Cardinals have a lot of money ($9.1 million) and took some deep discounts up top in Ramsey and Wisdom (good players, too), so they may be able to get Williams done.

Andrew (Brookline, PA): Walker Buehler was number 50 on the BA 500 and was taken by the Pirates in Round 14. The maximum bonus the Pirates can offer him is $100,000 unless they dip into their allotted pool for the their picks from Rounds 1-10. Are highly ranked players who fell in the draft like Buehler likely to sign?

Jim Callis: Some will. To me, Buehler is Mark Appel insurance. I see the Pirates being able to create $1 million or so in cap room, so they can offer Appel $4 million or so without losing a future first-rounder. If Appel turns it down, they can sign Buehler, a sandwich-round talent committed to Vanderbilt, for $1 million.

Audio from Iowa — “Catching Up with Jason (Jaramillo)”

Jeff Hem's note -- Tonight’s interview prior to Game 1 of the Sounds’ second consecutive doubleheader is with catcher Jason Jaramillo, who has played in over 100 major league games the past few seasons with the Pirates, spent most of Spring Training this year with the Cubs and now is in his first season with the Brewers organization. He joined the team recently from Double-A Huntsville after Martin Maldonado was called up to Milwaukee and Paul Phillips was traded to Toronto.

Final Game 1: Mobile 7, Huntsville 3 (7 Innings)

Huntsville Game 1 Box Score

Before getting into any of the pitching it looks like Tyler Thornburg induced a brawl in the 5th after he hit Alfredo Marte for the 2nd time. Marte doubled in the 2nd and Thornburg hit him in both the 4th and 5th innings. I wish I would have been listening to this game... dang it.

Mobile Bottom of the 5th

  • Evan Frey singles on a line drive to left fielder Lee Haydel.
David Nick grounds into a force out, pitcher Tyler Thornburg to shortstop Tommy Manzella. Evan Frey out at 2nd. David Nick to 1st.
    Matt Davidson strikes out swinging.
Mobile BayBears first baseman Matt Davidson ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
With Marc Krauss batting, David Nick steals (7) 2nd base.
    Marc Krauss walks.
Alfredo Marte hit by pitch. David Nick to 3rd. Marc Krauss to 2nd.
Pitcher Change: Darren Byrd replaces Tyler Thornburg, batting 9th.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Raoul Torrez replaces Alfredo Marte.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Kyle Greene replaces Yazy Arbelo.
Huntsville Stars shortstop Matt Cline ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
Huntsville Stars shortstop Juan Sanchez ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
Huntsville Stars pitcher Tyler Thornburg ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
Mobile BayBears center fielder Alfredo Marte ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
Mobile BayBears first baseman Yazy Arbelo ejected by HP umpire Spencer Flynn.
Kyle Greene hit by pitch. David Nick scores. Marc Krauss to 3rd. Raoul Torrez to 2nd.
Ed Easley doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Josh Prince. Marc Krauss scores. Raoul Torrez scores. Kyle Greene scores.
Wladimir Sutil flies out to left fielder Lee Haydel in foul territory.

Obviously Darren Byrd didn't help Thornburg's line but Tyler wasn't great regardless. He went 4.2IP allowing 4H, 2BB, 6R, 4R, and 2HBP against 5SO while throwing 53 of 80 pitches for strikes and posting a 5:4 ratio. I believe this was Tyler's 2nd ejection in as many weeks, he's got some orneriness in him. Santo Manzanillo gave up a 3B in the 6th but got out of the inning.

The Stars mounted a nice comeback in the 7th but obviously came up short. No Star batter had a multi hit or an XBH, but Thornburg did single pushing his BA to .278. Domnit Bolivar had the error which appeared to be during a run down which cost the 2 unearned runs.

Huntsville Game 1 Play By Play

Thornburg's 2nd.

Mobile Bottom of the 2nd

  • Marc Krauss walks.
Alfredo Marte doubles (13) on a ground ball to left fielder Lee Haydel. Marc Krauss to 3rd.
Yazy Arbelo reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by pitcher Tyler Thornburg. Marc Krauss scores. Alfredo Marte to 3rd. Yazy Arbelo to 2nd. Throwing error by third baseman Domnit Bolivar.
Ed Easley singles on a ground ball to shortstop Tommy Manzella, deflected by pitcher Tyler Thornburg. Alfredo Marte scores. Yazy Arbelo to 3rd.
Wladimir Sutil out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Lee Haydel. Yazy Arbelo scores.
Brett Lorin out on a sacrifice bunt, catcher Adam Weisenburger to first baseman Hunter Morris. Ed Easley to 2nd.
Evan Frey flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.

The Stars rally in the top of the 7th.

Huntsville Top of the 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Eric Smith replaces Eury De La Rosa, batting 9th.
Domnit Bolivar called out on strikes.
    Adam Weisenburger walks.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Scott Krieger replaces Santo Manzanillo.
Scott Krieger singles on a line drive to center fielder Evan Frey. Adam Weisenburger to 3rd.
Lee Haydel walks. Scott Krieger to 2nd.
Josh Prince walks. Adam Weisenburger scores. Scott Krieger to 3rd. Lee Haydel to 2nd.
Scooter Gennett singles on a ground ball to right fielder Marc Krauss. Scott Krieger scores. Lee Haydel scores. Josh Prince to 2nd.
Hunter Morris lines out to left fielder Daniel Kaczrowski.
Tommy Manzella grounds into a force out, shortstop Wladimir Sutil to second baseman David Nick. Scooter Gennett out at 2nd

Edit. It was a Brawl. Stuff like this is convincing me that I should maybe create a Twitter account.

Final: Wisconsin 4, Beloit 0

Wisconsin Box Score

Typically I wouldn't mention something like this as Chris usually covers it in the 9 After 9 but of the 5 hits Drew Gagnon gave up, 3 came in the first 2 innings and 2 were pop ups into shallow right field that somehow managed to find grass and the 3rd was a broken bat liner that just got over Hopkins' head. Drew was just fantastic given the stakes as the rest of the pitching match-ups for the series don't look to favor the T-Rats. Gagnon went 6.1IP reaching his pitch count in the 7th allowing the 5H, 1HBP, and 1BB against 8SO throwing 61 of 100 pitches for strikes while posting a 7:1 ratio. He was climbing the ladder again this evening getting those swinging strike outs, there was never doubt. I love that Erickson went right to and stuck with Tommy Toledo after he pulled Gagnon. Toledo one-upped Gagnon retiring the final 8 batters in order and struck out 4 in his 2.2IP.

If the pitching wasn't great I would have been a tad nervous as this game had all the makings of a come from ahead to lose sort of the game, the offense should have gotten more in the 2nd and went very quiet until the 7th when they finally pushed across another insurance run. With Rosario and Sano the Snappers can put up runs in a hurry, it only takes one mistake and the game is much closer than it should be. Gregory Hopkins has just been a beast these last 2 months, his success has definitely surprised me, he went 2-4 with a 2B and a HR, Chadwin Stang had the other multi-hit effort going 2-4. Rattler batters struck out 12 times and every single hitter had at least 1. Max Walla is enduring a tough stretch which has killed his stat line, he's only batting .128 over his last 10 games, Yadiel Rivera is also prone to extended slumps enduring his 2nd of the season which has dropped his BA to .222 as he's gone for a .105 average over his last 10 games. Yaddy got the night off and coached a little first base with George. The T-Rats played clean D once again and Rafael Neda gunned a runner at 2nd to end the 5th.

Wisconsin Play By Play

Bases loaded and 1 out... could have much more.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 2nd

  • Nick Ramirez flies out to center fielder Jonathan Goncalves.
Gregory Hopkins homers (8) on a fly ball to left field.
Ben McMahan singles on a soft line drive to right fielder Wang-Wei Lin.
Chadwin Stang singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Jonathan Goncalves. Ben McMahan to 2nd.
Rafael Neda walks. Ben McMahan to 3rd. Chadwin Stang to 2nd.
Adrian Williams walks. Ben McMahan scores. Chadwin Stang to 3rd. Rafael Neda to 2nd.
Brandon Macias hit by pitch. Chadwin Stang scores. Rafael Neda to 3rd. Adrian Williams to 2nd.
    Max Walla strikes out swinging.
    Jason Rogers strikes out swinging.

I'm sure Chris will cover the rest when his game story pops.

Raley, Cubs Blank Sounds In Twinbill Opener

06/09/2012 8:43 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa left-hander Brooks Raley tossed a seven-inning, six-hit shutout to lead the Cubs to a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Sounds in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday evening at Principal Park.

Raley (2-1), who retired the final eight batters in order and 14 of the last 15 Sounds overall, threw 90 pitches to record the shutout .The southpaw allowed six hits, struck out six, and did not walk a batter.

The I-Cubs scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman Matt Tolbert belted the first pitch he saw from Sounds starter Seth McClung over the center field wall for his first roundtripper of the season.

McClung (1-7) worked out of jams throughout the contest, including stranding the bases loaded twice, in keeping the deficit at one run. The big right-hander allowed one run on seven hits while striking out a season-high eight batters in his 106-pitch, six-inning complete-game effort. The eight punchouts were the highest single-game output by a Nashville pitcher this season.

Nashville advanced a runner to second only twice in the game and both were left stranded there by Raley.

First baseman Sean Halton singled in the first inning to extend the Sounds' longest active hitting streak to seven games. Outfielder Logan Schafer also singled in the Nashville first to extend his own hit streak to five games.

The defeat was the fourth shutout suffered this season by Nashville (23-39).

Box Score

Was anyone actually trying in this game? The scoring was done after a Cubs 1st inning homer. Caleb Gindl (2-3 2B) stayed hot. Logan Schafer (1-3) and Sean Halton (1-3) kept modest hitting streaks alive.

Seth McClung went the full 7 pitching quite well. 8 K's for Seth.

Rattlers shutout Beloit; Close in on playoff spot

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - A trio of Wisconsin Timber Rattlers all-stars combined to inch the team closer to a Midwest League playoff spot with a 4-0 win over the Beloit Snappers Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Pitchers Drew Gagnon and Tommy Toledo combined for twelve strikeouts and held the potent Beloit offense to no runs on five hits. Greg Hopkins homered and doubled to pace Wisconsin's offense.

Beloit (36-26) entered Saturday's game with a .263 batting average and with 306 runs scored. They were tied for the league lead in team batting average and are second in the league in runs scored. They threatened to score in the second inning as they put runners on first and second with back to back singles. Gagnon got Adam Bryan to ground into a force out at second base and Kyle Knudson to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

Wisconsin (39-23) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second. Hopkins launched his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot with one out, to left field. After the home run, Ben McMahan and Chadwin Stang singled. Then, Rafael Neda walked to load the bases.

Adrian Williams drew a four pitch walk to force in a run. Wisconsin got their third run of the inning when Beloit starter Tyler Jones hit Brandon Macias to force in run.

Jones settled in after the second inning and would strike out nine over six inning, but the damage had been done. Plus, Gagnon had settled into a groove of his own. Beloit would not get another hit off Gagnon until the sixth inning.

The Snappers had a runner at first with one out when Nate Roberts singled to put runners at first and second. The play also brought two big Minnesota Twins prospects - Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano - to the plate as the potential tying runs. In the first 62 games of the season, Rosario and Sano combined for 21 home runs and 84 RBI. Gagnon, a top prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, was not bothered by the prospect of facing that duo of Beloit batters.

The Rattlers right-hander struck out Rosario on three pitches and got Sano to pop out to short to end the inning.

Drew Leachman doubled to lead off the Snappers seventh inning. Gagnon retired Jhon Goncalves, but paid a bit of a price doing it. A grounder back to the mound hit Gagnon in the chest. He got the out at first, but Goncalves was the final batter Gagnon would face. That last pitch was also number 100 on the night for Gagnon and he turned the game over to Tommy Toledo.

The Rattlers reliever stranded Leachman at second base by retiring the final two batters of the seventh.

Wisconsin tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Macias knocked in Chadwin Stang with a infield grounder and Wisconsin's lead was 4-0.

Toledo worked a 1-2-3 eighth and finished the game with a flourish by striking out the side in order in the top of the ninth.

The win moved Wisconsin's lead in the Western Division to three games over the Snappers with eight games remaining in the first half.

Additionally, Peoria beat Kane County 4-1 on Saturday night. Each half the top two teams in both divisions in the Midwest League qualify for a playoff spot. Wisconsin now has a six game lead on Kane County with eight games to play in the first half. Wisconsin's magic number to clinch their first playoff spot since 2005 was lowered to two with the Kane County loss.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Chad Thompson (2-1, 6.16) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has David Hurlbut (2-0, 1.35) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 1:05pm.

The Timber Rattlers and the Fox Valley Humane Association presents Mutts on the Mound on Sunday. The left field berm seating area will be set aside for pets and their owners. Admission is $5 for humans and pets. Proceeds from pet tickets will be donated to the FVHA.

Before the game fans can play catch on-field courtesy and Timber Rattlers players will be available for an autograph session after the game.

Also, Time Warner Cable customers can receive up to four half-priced reserved bleacher tickets when showing their TWC bill at time of ticket purchase.

Finally, players will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys on-field during the game as part of Brewers Sunday courtesy of 107.5 The Fan.

If you can't make it out to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Gibbons Homer Nets Sounds 3-2 Nightcap Victory

06/09/2012 11:18 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - Outfielder Jay Gibbons belted a go-ahead homer in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Nashville Sounds to a 3-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday evening at Principal Park.

With the win, Nashville (24-39) gained a split of a twinbill against the division-rival Cubs for the second straight evening.

The Sounds grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Iowa right-hander Esmailin Caridad.

Hainley Statia drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a Corey Patterson double before scoring the game's first run on an Eric Farris groundout. With two outs, Sounds starting pitcher Amaury Rivas struck out swinging but the pitch eluded Cubs catcher Blake Lalli, allowing Patterson to race home to score on the wild pitch.

Patterson, the Nashville left fielder, kept the lead at two in the bottom of the second when he threw out Ty Wright at the plate as the Cubs outfielder attempted to score from second on a two-out Caridad single.

Rivas worked three scoreless inning during his spot start for the Sounds, taking a no-decision.

Victor Garate followed the right-hander and worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, striking out pinch-hitter Juan Apodaca on a breaking ball to escape the inning unscathed.

The Cubs evened the game at 2-2 in the fifth with a pair of two-out runs against Garate. Iowa got on the board when Luis Valbuena's two-out RBI double off the left field wall plated Matt Tolbert. Josh Vitters followed with an opposite-field RBI single to right that was just inside the first base bag.

Gibbons put Nashville back in front in the sixth when he slugged his first home run of the year, a two-out solo shot to right off Cubs right-hander Ty'Relle Harris.

Nashville missed a golden opportunity to add an insurance run in the seventh after Patterson led off with his second double of the night and moved to third on a Farris bunt single. Iowa left-hander Scott Maine recovered to strike out Dayton Buller, Caleb Gindl, and Jeff Bianchi to escape the jam.

Rob Wooten retired the final six Iowa batters in order, including a game-ending strikeout of top prospect Anthony Rizzo, to secure the victory and nail down his first career Triple-A save.

Garate (2-3) was the beneficiary of the late Gibbons homer and was awarded the victory despite giving up the game-tying runs in his two innings of work. Harris (0-1) drew the loss after surrendering Gibbons' homer.

The teams wrap up the six-game series with a 1:05 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mark Rogers (2-3, 4.47) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Iowa southpaw Chris Rusin (4-4, 3.93).

DSL Angels 4, @DSL Brewers 2

DSL Box

The Cerveceritos cruised along behind starter Jorge Ortega's strong start -- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 10 GO:2 FO. When Ortega left the game, the DSL Brewers were leading 2-0. Unfortunately, reliever Eliezer Montano instantly found trouble after entering the game in relief of Ortega. Montano was only able to induce one out, and the DSL Angels had scored four runs after the dust had settled on Montano's brief but disastrous outing today. Junior Flores & Melvin Tejada combined to work the final 2.2 innings in scoreless fashion.

Shortstop Carlos Belonis led the way on offense as the only Brewers player with two hits, including a double. Francisco Castillo, Juan Ortiz, and Yunior Santana each added a single apiece, and were the only others with hits today.

Ortega's strong performance is what stands out from today's game. This was just his second start of the 2012 season, with the first also having come against the DSL Angels. Last time out, Ortega allowed two runs on six hits in five innings of work, so the Angels didn't exactly benefit from having seen him before. Ortega posted a 3.16 ERA in 2011, his age-18 season, and had a GO:FO rate of just 0.90 After today's start, that rate is sitting at 3.40 on the young '12 campaign, so hopefully Jorge can keep the ball on the ground & keep building on his success.

Final Game 2: Mobile 7, Huntsville 6 (7 innings)

Huntsville Game 2 Box Score

The Stars get swept as Evan Anundsen gives up 7ER in his first 2 innings, he went 3 total. The 2 best Stars' pitchers gave up a combined 13 runs in 14 innings today. R.J. Seidel, Mitch Stetter, and Jesus Sanchez all pitched scoreless innings of relief with Sanchez striking out the side around a single and walk.

With Khris Davis on the DL yet again the Stars only have 1 player on the roster with an OPS over .800 in Hunter Morris. Scooter Gennett is sitting around .760 and then it drops to Josh Prince and Tommy Manzella each with .709s coming into today's action. Having lost Gibbons, Gonzalez, Bianchi, and Davis this is a completely different offensive team than the club that temporarily took over the division lead in the first half. That being said they had a nice game in the night cap pounding out 13 hits and continually trying to rally back to take the lead. Morris led the way with yet another HR, he went 3-4 and added a double as well. Lee Haydel, Manzella, and Kentrail Davis each went 2-4 with Manzella adding a double while Anderson De La Rosa added a double of his own. Davis did steal his 8th base on the season.

Bench-clearing brawl erupts at Stars-BayBears game

Both benches emptied Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Huntsville Stars and the homestanding Mobile BayBears.

Huntsville starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg hit Mobile batter Alfredo Marte for the second time in the fifth inning. Marte charged Thornburg, who ducked under the first punch and wrestled Marte to the ground as players swarmed into the fray.

Few punches connected and order was restored in less than a couple of minutes.

Home plate umpire Spencer Flynn conferred with the other two umpires to sort out who would be ejected.

Marte was hit by Thornburg in the fourth inning, and umpire Flynn walked him halfway to first base. Marte doubled in his first at-bat.

Thornburg and bench players Juan Sanchez and Matt Cline were ejected for Huntsville.

Marte and first basemann Yazy Arbelo were ejected for Mobile.

Matt Davidson was also ejected in the fifth before the melee for arguing a third strike call.

Mobile BayBears fight for win over Huntsville Stars

MOBILE, Alabama -- Brett Lorin bounced back from his worst outing of the season to pitch five shutout innings, and Ed Easley cleared the bases after a bench-clearing brawl as Mobile beat Huntsville 7-3 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Hank Aaron Stadium.

The BayBears' second win in the five-game series extended their lead in the Southern League South Division to three games as second-place Montgomery's game with Chattanooga was rained out.

Mobile has eight more games to clinch the first-half crown before the all-star break.

The second game of Saturday's doubleheader started after 10 p.m., and Sunday's forecast called for more rain.

The brawl was triggered when Stars starter Tyler Thornburg (8-1) hit Mobile batter Alfredo Marte for the second time in the fifth inning and Marte charged Thornburg, who ducked under the first punch and wrestled Marte to the ground as players swarmed into the fray.

Few punches connected and order was restored in less than a couple of minutes. Thornburg and bench players Juan Sanchez and Matt Cline were ejected for Huntsville. Marte and first baseman Yazy Arbelo were ejected for the BayBears.

Marte was hit by Thornburg in the fourth inning, and home plate umpire Spencer Flynn walked him halfway to first base. Marte doubled in his first at-bat.

Mobile's Matt Davidson was also ejected in the fifth before the melee for arguing a called third strike.

When play resumed, Huntsville reliever Darren Byrd hit pinch-hitter Kyle Greene to force in run to make it 4-0 with the bases still loaded, and Easley ripped a pitch to the center-field wall.

The BayBears' clubhouse was closed to the media after the game.

Mobile staked Lorin (2-4) to a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to Thornburg's wildness and a throwing error by third baseman Domnit Bolivar.

A leadoff walk to Marc Krauss and Marte's double set the inning up. Thornburg fielded Arbelo's hot shot back to the mound and had Krauss picked off at third, but Bolivar hurried his throw home for an error and a 1-0 lead.

Easley's grounder up the middle was knocked down by Thornburg behind the mound as Marte scored from third. Wladimir Sutil's sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

Lorin bounced back from his previous start in which he lasted 2 2/3 innings in a 15-10 loss to Birmingham.

The Stars avoided a shutout with three runs in the seventh off reliever Eric Smith. Second baseman Scooter Gennett drove in two runs for Huntsville.

Davidson homers twice as Mobile sweeps Huntsville in DH

The BayBears completed a sweep over the Huntsville Stars with a 7-6 victory powered by two home runs from Matt Davidson. With the homers, Davidson surpassed teammate Alfred Marte for the league lead with 14 homers.

Mobile took the series by winning the first three games in the five-game series to extend its Southern League lead in the South Division to 3 1/2 games as second-place Montgomery's game was rained out against Chattanooga. The BayBears have eight more games to clinch the first-half crown before the All-Star break.

Davidson's three-run homer highlighted a five-run first off Stars starter Evan Anundsen (4-3) in the nightcap that started after 10 p.m. His two-run homer gave the BayBears a 7-1 lead after two innings.

Huntsville made it a one-run game in its final at-bat when Hunter Morris doubled and Tommy Manzella blooped an RBI single behind first base.

Matt Gorgen, however, struck out Theodore, Alabama native Kentrail Davis to leave the tying run on base for his seventh save.

Bryan Woodall (1-0) gave up one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Sunday's forecast called for more rain with a single game at 2:05 p.m.
