Link Report for Fri. 6/1 -- Manatees with the most productive night (rainout)

Final: Tennessee 2, Huntsville 1

Huntsville Box Score

Hiram Burgos kept it scoreless through his 5IP allowing 6H and 2BB against 3SO having thrown 50 of 83 pitches for strikes posting a 7:2 ratio. Santo Manzanillo replaced Burgos in the 6th and had a tough go of it allowing 4H, a WP, and 2ER, last year's dominance/promise has been replaced by concerns over his injured shoulder and shoddy performance. Both R.J. Seidel and Mitch pitched scoreless innings getting 2SO each.

The Stars didn't do much against Cubs #4 prospect Trey McNutt, they got him for 4 hits, 2BB, and 1ER. Since McNutt is a name everyone should become familiar with here's the scouting report from the winter:

A 32nd-round steal who fell through the cracks in the 2009 draft, McNutt reached Double-A in his first full pro season but symbolized the Cubs' system-wide pitching woes in his second. Between blisters on two fingers, bruised ribs sustained in an infield collision and bad luck with rain, he worked just 26 innings from mid-May to mid-July. Even when healthy, he battled his command and consistency. McNutt can hit 98 mph with his fastball, though he gets more life and locates it better when he works at 92-94. His power breaking ball, which breaks more like a curveball and has slider velocity, can be equally as devastating. He could use an offspeed pitch to keep hitters off balance, and his changeup is just a work in progress. He needs to worry about working down in the zone rather than trying to blow the ball by hitters. McNutt remained inconsistent in the Arizona Fall League, and he could wind up as a late-inning reliever if he can't improve his changeup and command. If it all comes together, he could be a No. 2 starter, similar to what Chicago hopes for from 2008 first-rounder Andrew Cashner. Ticketed for a return to Tennessee, McNutt could finish 2012 in the majors.

Hunter Morris had the only multi-hit game and Tommy Manzella had the only XBH, a double. Kentrail Davis collected his 5th stolen base and an OF assist at 3rd. Burgos did pickoff a runner at 1B. The Stars did have runners in the 7th, 8th, and 9th but could not come up with the tying run.

Peralta's command seems to have evaporated. It's crazy that he developed this delivery flaw over the winter, Tunnell thought he was making strides to correct it but apparently not.

Final: Cedar Rapids 14, Wisconsin 9

Cedar Rapids outlasts Rattlers

Wisconsin's division lead over Beloit falls to one game after 14-9 loss to Kernels

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored seven runs in the second inning to build a seven-run lead over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Friday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Rattlers staged comebacks throughout the game, but every time they got close, the Kernels had an answer. The Kernels defeated Wisconsin 14-9.

Cedar Rapids (25-30) took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Hairgrove walked with one out. Kaleb Cowart tripled in Hairgrove and would score on a sacrifice fly to left by Frazier Hall.

Wisconsin (34-21) responded in the top of the second as Kernels starter Dan Reynolds walked three in the inning. Brandon Macias doubled in a pair of runs to tie the game.

Then, the Kernels scored a bushel of runs in the bottom of the second. The first seven batters of the inning reached and all seven would score. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases against Wisconsin starting pitcher Will West. A walk to Wendell Soto, the number nine batter in the order, forced in the first run of the inning.

Consecutive singles by Kevin Moesquit and Hairgrove would score a run to make the score 5-2 and keep the bases loaded. Cowart knocked West out of the game with a two run single to center for a 7-2 advantage.

Reliever Kevin Shackelford did not fare much better. Hall made the score 8-2 with his second sacrifice fly of the game. Matt Scioscia followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring in the inning.

Hairgrove made it 10-2 with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

Wisconsin rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The bases were loaded and Greg Hopkins scored from third on a passed ball. Yadiel Rivera knocked in the other two runners with a double.

The Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning and got a run on a sacrifice fly Rivera to make the score 10-6. But, that was it.

Cedar Rapids loaded the bases with no outs against Jacob Barnes in the bottom of the seventh inning. Barnes got the first out on a line drive to second. Cowart was next and sent a deep fly ball to centerfield. Chadwin Stang made a fine running catch as the runner from third tagged and scored. But, Stang appeared to have lost track of the outs and kept running with the ball. That allowed the runner at second, who was tagging to go to third, to just keep running and score the second run on the sacrifice fly.

Wisconsin would rally for three runs in the top of the eighth. Hopkins knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Then, Nick Ramirez and Cameron Garfield had consecutive run scoring doubles and the Kernels lead was down to three runs.

But, the Kernels would come back with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Gary Mitchell and a run scoring error.

Wisconsin had no comebacks left in the ninth and went down in order.

The Timber Rattlers begin the final leg of their 13-day road trip on Saturday night when they face the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Matt Miller (3-4, 3.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit will put Matt Summers (4-3, 3.99) on the mound. Start time for game one of this key series is 7:00pm.

The three game series at Pohlman Field is key because Beloit trails the Timber Rattlers by one game in the Midwest Leagues Western Division. The Snappers won the final two games of their series at Quad Cities before heading home to face Wisconsin. The Rattlers dropped the final two games of their series at Cedar Rapids.

Tune in for the broadcast of game one on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

WP: Michael Johnson (3-3)

LP: Will West (1-1)

Wisconsin Box Score

Chris said on the air that if anyone made any football jokes about the score he'd punch 'em in the face, so there goes my bit of cleverness for today. Every Rattler pitcher who appeared in this game gave up runs... Will West was charged with 9 runs and didn't record an out in the 2nd. Kevin Schackleford was charged with 1 of his own and allowed all 3 of West's inherited runners to score. Jacob Barnes gave up 2 runs in his 4 innings and Tyler Cravy gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, in his inning.

The Rattlers made mental mistakes all over the place including an out on the bases but somehow only managed to be charged with 1 fielding error, Yadiel Rivera's 7th. Cameron Garfield dropped another ball at home plate and air mailed another throw into CF on a stolen base attempt, which is the second occurrence of each play since he's been back, thankfully the overthrows at 2B have been backed up so the runner wasn't allowed to advance.

Brandon Macias went 3-4 with a 2B, Nick Ramirez went 3-4 with a 2B and a walk, Gregory Hopkins extended his hit streak with a 2-3 effort, Garfield went 2-3 with a 2B and 2BB, and finally Rivera added the 2 run double mentioned above.

Wisconsin Play By Play

I wouldn't even know where to start... 23 runs, mental mistakes, and errors... enjoy I guess?

Sounds Lose 5-3, Swept By Oklahoma City

06/01/2012 10:29 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks completed a four-game series sweep of the Nashville Sounds with a 5-3 victory on Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Nashville (20-34) has lost 11 of its 12 games against the RedHawks this season, including each of the last nine meetings between the teams. Nine of the 12 contests in the series were decided by two runs or less.

The sweep was Nashville's third of the season and second by the hands by the RedHawks. The Sounds dropped four straight to the RedHawks from April 18-20 at Greer Stadium.

Going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the night, Nashville led off with an extra-base hit in each of the first four innings, but managed to only score once during that time on Andy Gonzalez's first homer of the season (Audio).

Oklahoma City starter Paul Clemens (6- 4) gave up one run on five hits (all against the leadoff hitter) while striking out five in seven innings for the win.

Starting pitcher Wily Peralta saw eight Oklahoma City batters and was touched for three runs in the bottom of the first as the RedHawks quickly took a 3-0 advantage. After a walk to Scott Moore, Brett Wallace hit a two-out single for the first run before Angel Sanchez later brought home two more with another two-out single.

The two teams traded runs in the second inning thanks to solo homers by Gonzalez and Brian Bixler.

Oklahoma City tacked on their final run in the third for a 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded thanks to a hit-by-pitch, walk, and single, Landon Powell hit an RBI infield groundout to third base.

Nashville scored two late runs in the top of the ninth, but came up short with the tying run at the plate. With runners on first and second and one out, outfielder Jay Gibbons hit an opposite-field, RBI double to left field (Audio) against the shift to score Jordan Brown and move Gonzalez to third. Second baseman Eric Farris then grounded out to shortstop to allow Gonzalez to score.

Catcher Jason Jaramillo ended the ninth-inning rally by grounding out to first.

In his fifth consecutive loss, Peralta (1-7) yielded five runs on six hits and a season-high six walks in 4 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old also fanned two with 93 pitches, 49 for strikes.

Reliever Robert Wooten tossed 2 2/3 of scoreless innings while stranding all three of his inherited runners. Jim Henderson also threw a scoreless frame.

The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to open a brief four-game homestand against New Orleans. It will be the teams' third series of the year; the Zephyrs have won five of the eight contests against Nashville in 2012. Sounds right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 6.52) will take the mound against New Orleans Alex Sanabia (3-3, 2.79).

Box Score

Wily Peralta's 2012 is reminiscent of Mark Rogers' 2011. Both were coming off of very impressive minor league campaigns and both even had successful big league stints. Then, the next year, everything goes to heck. Rogers was dealing with an injury. What is Peralta's deal? I hope it is mechanical. As far as we know, his stuff has been as good as ever, just not the command and control. There are still three months for Peralta to work his numbers back to respectability.

Robert Wooten and Jim Henderson held them over the final 3.2 frames.

Caleb Gindl was moved into the 3-hole, but he did not get a hit. He did strike out 4 times.

Surprisingly, K's have not really been Gindl's problem before tonight. Keep your chin up, Caleb! Logan Schafer hit a 3B and Wily Pertalta hit a 2B.

Stars Bats Silenced in Rubber Match With Smokies, 2-1

KODAK, Tenn. - A night after only being able to manage one run on two hits, the Huntsville Stars were once again limited to one run on six hits, losing the rubber match of a five-game series by a score of 2-1 on Friday Night at Smokies Park.

Just like Thursday night, the game began as a pitchers duel, this time between Stars RHP Hiram Burgos and Smokies RHP Trey McNutt. Both teams were unable to manage a run in the first five innings in the ballgame.

In the sixth inning, it was the Stars that broke out to the initial lead. After center fielder Josh Prince singled, shortstop Tommy Manzella continued his hot hitting with an RBI double that scored Prince from first to make the score 1-0. For Manzella, the RBI was his 6th of the series.

Burgos was chased from the game with a high pitch count after five innings of six-hit scoreless baseball. The Smokies were able to get to Huntsville RHP Santo Manzanillo.

Tennessee led off the inning with back-to-back singles from outfielders Jim Adduci and Rebel Ridling. Then, after advancing to third on a single by Matt Cerda, Adduci scored on a wild pitch from Manzanillo to tie the game up at one apiece. The same at-bat, Mike Burgess doubled home Cerda to give the Smokies the lead for good.

Through the rest of the game, the Stars offense was shut down by reliever Alberto Cabrera for two innings, and then RHP Marcus Hatley in the ninth to notch his second save of the season.

The Stars will return home on Saturday to open up a six-game series against the Mississippi Braves at Joe Davis Stadium. First pitch is at 6:43 CT.
