The Brewerfan.net Injury Thread

With nearly every Brewers player you've ever heard of currently on the DL, I thought we might as well have some fun and track our own maladies through the course of the season.

My stepson tore ankle ligaments yesterday, playing in a "bouncy house" at his HS graduation party. No word yet on a possible replacement child while he mends.

Got hit in the face earlier this year by an errant line drive while COACHING during baseball practice. Got 20 stitches for my trouble after driving myself to the hospital. This was the day before a job interview. Needless to say, I did not get the job.

i immediately pictured the scene in Fight Club where he's at the board meeting with a swollen face and a busted lip, freaking everybody out but just grinning away.

It probably looked somewhat similar.

My shoulder hurts when I throw. Has for about 5 years. About 3 weeks ago, it was killing me after a game of playing SS in my softball league. By the next week, I had nursed it back to being tolerable. Then, the first throw I made, my whole arm went numb and it really hurt. There is no way I could have made a throw the rest of the game so it was lucky I did not have to.

The next day, my shoulder felt better than ever and now I am virtually pain free when I throw. Did I break up some scar tissue or something?

Fun thread! In January I had a fibula stress fracture and I currently have mild patellar tendonitis. Both from distance running. I was injury-free in 2011 so I guess I am having the same bad luck as the Brewers.

I narrowly averted disaster with a pair of toenail clippers that fell off my bed's headboard and hit me in the forehead. Another centimeter lower and it's in my eye. Probably placed there by my wife. [sarcasm]I feel Luc's pain.[/sarcasm]

I actually got my current job 3 years ago when I had to interview 2 days after ripping the right side of my face open on some concrete. It helped that it was my second interview though, so they at least saw me without bandages on my cheek and wrists.

I remember when they made me the offer in the interview, and my current boss said something to the effect of "you don't seem as excited about the offer as I thought you would be" to which I responded, "well, it hurts to smile."

Since I walk at least 3 miles every day my legs tend to get sore. Like George Kottaras last night, I play through it. I have yet to injure my ACL (knocks on wood), although I did take a spill on St. Patrick's Day (sadly, I wasn't even drunk) which caused a nice gash on my elbow and hand.

Yep, it was news to me as well. Go figure, years of baseball and now years of softball, one fluke play and there you have it. Not my proudest moment on the field.

Ultrasound Tech asked if I'd like to take a look at the results, took a pass as I imagined it would only make the pain worse.

Got back on the field a few weeks ago, and highly suggested to any teammates who thought they were slick with the glove like I did to invest in a little protection. Not worth the risk, I'll tell ya that much.

I once broke a toe standing up from the toilet. I had passed out, elbows on knees. When I woke up, my legs were asleep, so I fell when I stood up, hitting my toe against the wall. Large quantities of beer may or may not have been involved.

I have 1) blew out a knee downhill skiing. Simple scope, but I had a blood clot that burst in my quad, turning it into jello (doctor's words); 2) Severely injured my shoulder throwing pop-ups; 3) hurt my knee curling. I'm sure there is more, but those are the ones that stand out.

I have torn up my right knee twice (high school football and again while playing intramural sports in college). It occasionally will dislocate at inopportune times (I have done this 50+ times). While teaching class and circulating around groups working on a history activity my kneecap all the sudden goes out and bam I am on the floor with 25 high school students looking at me. Some in shock, some concerned...some laughing.

I had Tommy John surgery on my right elbow 9 years ago, and I was out of work for 18 months.

I wish I would have learned how to eat cereal, write, and wipe my butt left handed before I had it done, because after the fact, was kinda awkward.

It's funny, when a pitcher has an elbow injury, we're all on here "just have the surgery", as if it's no big deal.

When you come out of TJ surgery, you're basically a one-armed man for several weeks, and then the rehab is nothing short of brutal.

My employer at the time (well, their insurance company) of 10 years, cut me a check for $2,200 for partial disability, and canned me, because I was now an 'injury risk'.

That's a fine 'how do you do' if you ask me.

I drilled a hole in my hand with a 1/4" bit while bracing a piece of wood on a bench I restored. The board fell while I was drilling and I reflexively jerked my hand up to stop it. Blood gushed everywhere, but I have a $1,000 ER deductible, so I applied pressure and then a generous amount of super glue. A month later, it's just a big pink spot on my palm.

I was in a car wreck in October and broke my left leg and both of my ankles. And my nose. And had a degloving injury to my left arm. I'm probably back to about 98% now and won't have any long-term effects aside from the rod/plate/screws in my left leg. I should have easily died, though, so it's a pretty small price to pay. I was off work for three months, but was very fortunate with how generous my employer was when I was laid up.

Prior to that, I had health in my skill set.

  • 4 weeks later...

I got a relief appearance on the mound in softball last night. One guy took me deep for a 3 run home run. The next time up, he hit it harder but on a line right at me. I had just enough time to turn my leg, otherwise I would have taken it on the kneecap. As it is, I have giant welt on the side of the leg and a small limp.

The joke was on him. I had deflected right at my SS for a force out at second.
