Brewers claim Cody Ransom, option Maysonet

Recommended Posts

Wow. Consider me underwhelmed on a few different levels.

First of all: I don't get why they think Izturis is better than Maysonet

Secondly: Ransom is 36 years old with a .957 Fielding % at SS and a .310 career OBP.

Not that I was expecting something special but this doesn't help the Brewers much, other than providing the Brewers with a decent backup defensively at 2B

He is not going to be a savior but he is a better hitting option at this point then both Izturis and Maysonet. He was batting .269 so far this year. Granted I do expect him to regress back to career norms but that should still be better than either of those options. What i wish the Brewers would do now is send Izturis down or DFA him and bring up Bianchi but this certainly is better than the alternative to me.

His major league numbers are in under 400 career AB's that are very spread out. Still a .310 OBP for a .226 hitter isn't bad. Plus he's slugged over .400 in the big leagues and he's coming of a great 2011 at Reno. They desperately need offense in the middle infield. For a waiver pickup, it's a good one. I'm fine with some shaky defense if he hits. Bring in Izturis late.

Maybe he'll have a Brandon Inge-esque resurgence against his former team this weekend. . . . when I'm there to see it.

Cody Ransom is this years Juan Bell. Of course that means Itzuris would be this years Jeff Huson. I think I may have thrown his name out here in 2006 when Hardy was hurt and the Chris Barnwell era began. But that would have been before we acquired Graffy.

The big negative is not unlike Conrad, he strikes out a lot. He does have 212 minor league HR though. Not many guys stick around long enough to get that many. On the other hand, not many middle infielders have that kind of power either.

It's like having 1 Ford Escort with a blown engine and buying another one with a blown transmission for parts so that you can create a working Ford Escort.

Well, if it results in us having a working Ford Escort, its a big improvement
