VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees lost their fifth game in row as they were defeated by the Daytona Cubs, 2-1 on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. After a 5-1 start to the season, the 'Tees have gone 9-21 since.

Manatees starting pitcher and Brewers 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (4-3, 3.53) went just 3 1/3 innings as he left the game with an apparent groin injury. He allowed two runs on three hits, while walking two and not recording a strikeout.

The two runs scored on Bradley in the first inning were all that the Cubs needed as Nelson Perez hit a two-run single with two outs in the frame. The Manatees (14-22) got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Cody Hawn plated Reggie Keen with a RBI single.

The scoring by both teams in the first inning would be all for the game as pitching dominated the rest of the way. After Bradley's early exit, Brevard County's bullpen held Daytona (14-23) scoreless for 5 2/3 innings.

Brian Garman came out of the pen first for the 'Tees and threw 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Eric Arnett, Stosh Wawrzasek and Eric Marzec threw a scoreless inning each against the Cubs.

The Manatees had their chances offensively as they outhit the Cubs 7-5, but Brevard went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Both Hawn and Mike Walker had two hits each in the Manatees' loss. During their current five game losing streak, Brevard County has scored just eight runs and is hitting just .192 as a team.

Brevard County and Daytona will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of this three-game set.

Brooks Hall (0-1, 1.98) will get the start for the Manatees as he replaces the recently promoted Hiram Burgos in the rotation. In his first start of the season last Thursday against Palm Beach, he went five innings and allowed one run, while striking out five.

The Cubs will send Matt Loosen (1-1, 5.54) to the hill. Loosen faced the 'Tees on opening night and allowed three runs on one hit and four walks in 1/3 of an inning.

Box Score

So this game should have been called after the first inning. The final score would have been the same and our prized young southpaw with the slippery slider wouldn't have hurt his groin. Starter Jed Bradley almost escaped the 1st inning, but a key two-out 2-run knock proved to be the game winner. In case you missed it, Bradley left in the 3rd inning with a groin injury. I'm glad the injury is a lower half thing. He did post a 7:1 GO:FO. The relievers were spectacular allowing only 1 hit the rest of the way.

T.J. Mittelstaedt (0-2 2 BB SB) has been struggling. 45 K's in 126 AB's for Brevard's best hitter. Mike Walker and Nick Shaw have identical, but not really, .704 OPS.

Game Log

I think the run-scoring single was actually with 1-out, no?

Sounds Split Doubleheader With 5-1 Loss

05/14/2012 11:09 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds lost 5-1 to the Reno Aces in the twinbill finale of a doubleheader on Monday evening at Greer Stadium.

With the split, the Sounds moved to 1-3 in doubleheader action in 2012 and sport a 13-23 record, which moves the club ahead of Memphis into third place in the PCL American Northern Division.

Reno struck first with three runs against starter Seth McClung in the opening frame of the nightcap. The bases were loaded with one out as Adam Eaton and Jake Elmore reached on singles, followed by a one-out walk from Mike Jacobs. David Winfree brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly while Taylor Harbin knocked a two-run triple in the ensuing at-bat.

The runs scored by Reno ended a scoreless streak of nine innings leading back to the fourth inning of Saturday's rain-shortened contest.

The Aces pushed the score to 4-1 in the top of the fifth as Eaton doubled and scored on an Elmore single to right field.

David Winfree belted his first homer of the season to extend the Aces' lead to 5-1 in the visiting half of the sixth. The solo shot was hammered over the wall in right center.

The Sounds got a run back in the next frame on Aces starter Taylor Sinclair, who made his Triple-A debut. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi reached on a run-down fielder's choice, and scored on an RBI base hit from left fielder Erick Almonte.

Schafer, Bianchi, and Sean Halton recorded two hits apiece in the nightcap.

Sinclair surrendered one run on four hits and a walk on 2 2/3 innings for the Aces. Reliever Mike DeMark (302) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the victory.

McClung (0-4) remained winless on the year, giving up four runs on five hits on while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings.

Juan Perez struck out his only two batters faced. Amaury Rivas allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

With a scoreless inning, Jim Henderson extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 innings over 10 appearances to open the season, the most innings of all PCL pitchers with a 0.00 ERA.

The teams will wrap up the four-game series with an 11:05 a.m. matinee on Tuesday morning at Greer Stadium, when thousands of area schoolchildren will pack the stands on Education Day as a reward for reaching their goals in the Nashville Sounds Reading Club program. (Again?)

Right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 4.03) will start the contest for the Sounds and face Albuquerque southpaw Zach Kroenke (3-1, 5.23).

Box Score

Logan Schafer added 2 more hits including a 2B. Sean Halton also had 2 hits and 2B.

Juan Perez was very good in this one. He is having a very good season thus far. Same with Jim Henderson. Both guys are certainly hotter than anything in the Milwaukee bullpen right now.

The Sounds need to head out west to take advantage of those thin air ballparks. The hitters need it.

Wow, another inning with no runs for Arnett. He even allowed no baserunners for once. He's almost got his ERA into the 2's. Anyone have any info on his stuff? I assumed that with the struggles, the shoulder injury, etc that he was still around 90. Has it gotten back to pre-draft levels?

I'm not sure where his stuff is, but he's only pitching an inning every 4-7 days (2 times he went 1+) which leads me to believe that young Mr. Arnett and coach Dewey are doing a ton of work in the bullpen. Typically when the Brewers are limiting innings due to injury the schedule is very regular... every third day, every fourth day, etc. Since his schedule is fairly random but with plenty of time to get BP sessions in between that would be my guess.

I doubt we get anything out of the local news, we'd have to get something from another source like Ash, BA, MiLB, etc.

Final Game 2: Mississippi 6, Huntsville 0 (7 innings)

Game 2 Box Score

Someday a psychologist is going to sit down and figure out what it is with splitting doubleheaders. I know they were my least favorite part of baseball when I played. I was fortunate to come through school during my town's prime so I competed with some awfully talented people and we didn't lose much so after changing into shorts and taking off the jersey top, then getting something to eat, I never felt like suiting back up to play another game against a team we already beat, especially in July and August. I don't recall ever losing the front end of a doubleheader, but I can imagine there is a sense of urgency that comes with that 2nd game to put a win on the board and get a return on the investment.

Unfortunately Kyle Heckathorn had his worst start of the season in Game 2, he last 4.2IP giving up 7H, 5ER, 0BB, 1WP, and 1HR against 3SO. Kyle only threw 73 pitches but 46 strikes so efficiency with the pitch count wasn't his problem he just got hit hard, he was especially burned by XBHs which accounted for all 5 runs against him. Daniel Meadows came on to get the last out in the 5th then gave way to Bradley Blanks who allowed a run on 2 hits against 3 strike outs in his 2 innings. Positive spin for game 2... Stars pitchers did not walk a batter.

The offense was pretty anemic in game 2 only putting 5 hits on the board and no Huntsville player had multiple hits or an XBH. Josh Prince did steal his 8th and the Stars played clean defense.

Manatees' Bradley leaves with injury

Left-hander suffers mild groin strain, replaced after 3 1/3 frames

By David Heck / Special to MLB.com

Jed Bradley, the 15th overall pick in 2011, has posted a 3.53 ERA this year. (Cliff Welch/MiLB.com)

An injury limited Jed Bradley to the shortest start of his career Monday.

The Brewers' No. 2 prospect lasted just 3 1/3 innings -- coming out in the middle of an at-bat -- in Class A Advanced Brevard County's 2-1 loss to Daytona.

Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash told MLB.com that Bradley was removed with a mild groin strain.

On the night, Bradley (4-3) surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks. The outing marks the first time that he failed to pitch at least five innings, as well as the first time that he did not record a strikeout.

The 21-year-old left-hander scuffled in the first inning, allowing four of the first five batters he faced to reach base. Arismendy Alcantara led off the game with a single, while Ronald Torreyes followed with a walk. After a popout by Rubi Silva, Greg Rohan drew a free pass and Nelson Perez delivered a two-run single.

Bradley went on to retire the next eight batters he faced before Perez again singled in the fourth. He then threw one pitch to John Andreoli, but was replaced by reliever Brian Garman in the middle of the at-bat.

"It was weird, he didn't even limp or anything," said Robbie Aaron, the Daytona Cubs' director of broadcasting and media relations. "We didn't know if he was injured or something happened. The coaching staff and trainer came out. We didn't know if he was hurt, but he didn't look like he was in pain."

Drafted with the 15th overall pick in June, Bradley has posted a 3.53 ERA through 43 1/3 innings with the Manatees. He has fanned 36 while walking 14.

Bucs' Wilson exits with groin injury

Pirates left-hander to be re-evaulated by team on Tuesday

By Danny Wild / MLB.com

Justin Wilson has won three of his eight starts this season. (Bill Gentry/Indians)

Pirates prospect Justin Wilson left his Triple-A start with a groin injury after three innings on Monday afternoon, the team said.

Wilson held Norfolk to one hit over three innings for Indianapolis before exiting with tightness in his right groin while warming up to start the fourth inning. The Pirates said it was a "precautionary measure" and that Wilson, Pittsburgh's No. 2-ranked left-handed prospect, will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Wilson threw 30 pitches -- 21 for strikes -- and allowed just one hit, a two-out single to center in the first inning.

The left-hander is 3-3 with a 3.14 ERA in eight starts this season, with 41 strikeouts in 43 innings, including a game on April 29 in which he combined with Jose Diaz and Doug Slaten on Indy's first no-hitter in nearly seven years when the Indians blanked the Durham Bulls, 2-0.

The Fresno State alum was named the International League's Pitcher of the Week on April 30 and has held opponents to a .184 average this season.

Veteran Rick VandenHurk pitched five scoreless innings in relief of Wilson, holding the Tides to five hits for his first win. Matt Hague's sacrifice fly scored Gorkys Hernandez in the fourth for the game's lone run.

Norfolk's Steve Johnson took the tough-luck loss, allowing an unearned run on three hits over eight innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

Stars and Braves Split Doubleheader

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- After two consecutive rainouts, mother nature finally complied and allowed the Huntsville Stars to play and split a doubleheader against the Mississippi Braves on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars won game one 5-4 and lost game two 6-0.

In game one, down by a run early, the Stars got an RBI double from Jason Jaramillo and a two-run single from center fielder Josh Prince to take a 3-1 lead after the first inning.

While defensive miscues by Huntsville allowed the M-Braves to score three of their four runs, making the score 5-4 in the fifth inning, their was no scoring after that point.

Huntsville starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg improved to 5-0 on the season after pitching six innings while giving up four runs (one earned) and striking out four. Following Thornburg's departure before the seventh inning, Stars RHP Jesus Sanchez shut down the M-Braves for his third save of the season. Sanchez hasn’t allowed a run in his last 12 appearances.

In game two, the Stars were shutout by a score of 6-0 and held to five total hits by the combination of M-Braves starting pitcher Sean Gilmartin and reliever Andrew Wilson.

On offense, the Braves began the scoring in the first inning on a two-run home run from third basemen Joe Leonard.

Mississippi also got an RBI triple by center fielder Todd Cunningham in the second inning, and a two-run double by first basemen Ian Gac in the fifth inning to give Gilmartin all the run support he needed.

The Braves 2011 first round draft pick (29 th overall) improved to 2-4 on the season by shutting out the Stars through six innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four.

Stars starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn fell to 2-2 on the season after giving up five runs in 4.2 innings pitched. For Heckathorn, the first inning home run to Leonard was his first long ball given up this season in over 40 innings pitched. The loss was the fourth time the Stars have been shutout this season.

The Stars and Braves will finish off their four-game series with a special 10:43 AM first pitch on Tuesday with Huntsville sending out RHP Hiram Burgos (2-1, 0.87 ERA with High-A Brevard County) to face off against Mississippi starter RHP David Hale (2-2, 4.66 ERA).
