More run for STL's OF prospect Oscar Taveras.

 

There has been a lot of chatter about Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras over the past year or so. I think the industry as a whole really believes in his bat, but his defense rarely if ever is discussed. I've seen questions about whether Taveras can be an adequate center fielder, and most of the time the answer is no and that right field is his optimal position. Can you shed some light with an in-depth defensive report on Taveras?

Taveras is athletic but doesn't quite profile as a center fielder. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has average but not plus speed and his routes on flyballs leave something to be desired. Last year at low Class A Quad Cities, he also garnered a reputation for focusing on his hitting more than on the other aspects of his game.

 

Add in his solid arm, and Taveras fits best in right field. He has more than enough bat to profile as a starter there. He won the Midwest League batting title with a .386 average in 2011, the circuit's highest average in 55 years. This season, Taveras has skipped a level to Double-A at age 20 and continue to rake, batting .325/.374/.658 at Springfield.

Top Pitching Performances Over The Weekend, May 4-6

 

Reds' #12 prospect Juan Carlos Sulbaran is listed, here's his scouting report:

Draft 2008: Sulbaran pitches in the low 90s with a clean delivery and downhill plane. He has a durable frame and projects as a starter in the pros with three pitches (fastball, curveball, changeup) that could be average to above-average. Sulbaran is committed to Florida.

After 2011:Ever since the Reds' gave him $500,000 as a 30th-rounder in 2008, Sulbaran has shown some of the better stuff in the system but not the performance to match. Maturity issues have been his biggest obstacle, and blister problems also haven't helped. In 2011, he finally took some steps forward, posting career bests in ERA (4.60) and strikeouts per nine innings (10.2) in the high Class A California League, a notorious hitter's haven. Cincinnati managed to get Sulbaran better directed toward home plate in his delivery last year. He still throws across his body but not nearly as much as in the past, and his improved mechanics gave him increased ability to locate pitches to his arm side. After sitting at 89-92 mph with his fastball in previous years, Sulbaran rang up a lot of 93s and 94s and touched 95 in 2011. His fastball has late sink, which makes it more effective. He's still working on his secondary pitches, an erratic curveball that's a plus offering at times and a fringy changeup that gives him a chance against lefthanders. Sulbaran has the stuff to be a No. 3 starter if he can continue to improve his command and mound presence. He'll work on that in Double-A this year.

Taveras, Wong injured in Cards' win

Hot-hitting prospects forced to exit victory over Arkansas

Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras continued their strong starts to the season Sunday, but the Cardinals may be forced to take their hot bats out of the lineup for a few days.

 

Wong collected two more hits at the top of the lineup and Taveras slugged a three-run homer and reached base three times in Double-A Springfield's 10-7 win over Arkansas. But both top prospects suffered injuries that could leave the team shorthanded for the rest of its homestand.

 

Wong, St. Louis' No. 6 prospect, rolled his left ankle trying to beat out an infield hit in the fifth inning. Taveras, the Cards' No. 3 prospect, bruised his right knee in a collision with second baseman Jose Garcia in the eighth.

 

Both players left the game and received treatment in the clubhouse. The severity of the injuries is not known, although the Springfield News-Leader reported Wong does not expect to miss too much time.

 

The afternoon started well for both players, with Wong -- a 2011 first-round pick -- opening the game with a single, going first-to-third on Jermaine Curtis' base hit and scoring on Taveras' eighth homer. The longball matched the 19-year-old outfielder's tally from last season and gave him the Texas League lead with 27 RBIs.

 

Wong grounded out in the third and singled up the middle in the fourth. An inning later, chopped a ball to second baseman Renny Osuna and landed awkwardly while trying to beat out a hit. He was replaced by Garcia, who ended up playing a role in Taveras' injury.

 

After walking in the second and flying out in the sixth, Taveras collided with Garcia in shallow right field as the two tried to track down Adam Heether's double.

 

Garcia told the newspaper that Taveras' knee made contact with his leg. Taveras was able to walk off the field, while Garcia remained in the game.

 

Taveras is batting .325 with a league-leading 20 extra-base hits in 29 games, while Wong is hitting .325 with 22 runs scored in 27 contests.

Unfortunately in Palm Beach today, Cardinals' stud pitching prospect Carlos Martinez, still only 20 years old, is overmatching the Brevard lineup, and Jimmy Nelson was not up to the challenge on the opposing end.

 

Also unfortunately, you don't need to be Carlos Martinez-caliber to overmatch the Manatees this year.

Martinez cost STL $1.5 million to sign which is equivalent to end of the first round money. Is Pascual's bonus still the biggest the Brewer's have handed out? The Rangers tried to sign Beras for something like $4.5 million this winter, the market in Latin America is quickly becoming outrageous, I wouldn't mind seeing those players included in the draft, just like the young men from Puerto Rico.

Manatees drop third straight in Monday matinee

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their third consecutive game as they fell 6-2 to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Monday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium.

 

Manatees starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (2-2, 2.45) went just four innings and allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits. He walked one and struck out six.

 

The Cardinals' big inning came in the third when Palm Beach (16-15) plated three runs. They scored two runs via a throwing error by Nelson on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Starlin Rodriguez.

 

Brevard County's bullpen fared better as both Eric Arnett and Brandon Kintzler threw a scoreless inning each, while Connor Whalen allowed one run in two innings but the damage had already been done.

 

The Manatees (13-18) scored their only runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. The runs in each inning came on RBI groundouts.

 

In the seventh, Cody Hawn led off the inning with a double and two batters later he was driven in by Mike Walker on a groundout. In the eighth, Nick Shaw led the frame off with a walk and then Miguel Velazquez doubled to put runners at second and third. T.J. Mittelstaedt then grounded out to bring home Shaw.

 

Monday's loss ends a seven-game road trip for Brevard County, which saw the 'Tees go 2-5. The Manatees return home on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m., to open a four-game set with the St. Lucie Mets, who own the best record in the Florida State League at 25-6.

 

2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (3-2, 3.34) will take the mound for the Manatees in Tuesday's series opener. The Mets will send Erik Goeddel (1-0, 0.75) to the hill.

Jimmy Nelson was not sharp today as he gave up 9 hits in just 4 innings. He did K 6 to only 1 BB so his stuff was working at times. He did not help himself when he committed a throwing error on a bunt attempt. Eric Arnett (1 IP 1 K), Brandon Kinzler (1 IP 2 K) and Connor Whalen (2 IP 1 ER 3 K) finished the game admirably.

 

Opposing pitcher Carlos Martinez was as advertised. Martinez did peg three Brevard batters, and unfortunately, Cole Hamels was not there to keep the game in order. Mike Walker (2-4) was the only multi-hit hitter. Nick Shaw was 0-2 with 2 BB.

 

Just about a month away from draft day. Hopefully we restock the system's bat coffers.

Cardinals Knock Off Manatees, 6-2

The Palm Beach Cardinals (16-15) would not need extra innings in today's morning affair with the Brevard County Manatees (13-18), as they got of the gate early for the 6-2 victory.

 

Starter Carlos Martinez (2-1) was on top of his game morning, as the right-hander went a season-high seven innings, scattering three hits for one run. His longest outing of the season earned his second victory.

 

Offensively, the Cardinals got on the board early, as Chris Edmondson doubled to bring in Mike O'Neill, who reached base on a lead off single. O'Neill got the rally going in the third, as he singled to start off the inning. Ronny Gil was hit by the next pitch. Starlin Rodriguez bunted both players over, but Jimmy Nelson's throw sailed over the third baseman head and brought both runs in. Rainel Rosario capped the scoring as he singled to bring in Rodriguez.

 

The Cardinals tacked on one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Gil and one in the seventh on RBI double by Jonathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez' double was his third hit of the game and his third double.

 

The Manatees tried to rally late, as they got the first two batters on in the eighth, but Aidan Lucas settled down to keep the Manatees from getting any closer. Chase Reid pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.

 

On the day, Jonathan Rodriguez led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 day, while Mike O'Neill added three hits and two runs.

 

The Cardinals finished a successful home stand, as they went 5-2 and now will hit the road for four games against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. as Seth Maness goes for his fourth win of the season.

Nashville Loses Series Finale In Albuquerque, 8-3

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds dropped an 8-3 series finale to the Albuquerque Isotopes on Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park. With the loss, Nashville lost three of four in the series and moved to a PCL worst 9-21 on the season, which matches last year's Sounds club.

 

With a 3-1 lead entering the fourth inning, Albuquerque scored seven unanswered runs to win and take the series.

 

Second baseman Hainley Statia (2-for-4) doubled while driving in all three runs. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi and outfielders Corey Patterson and Jordan Brown each added two hits.

 

The Sounds took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame against Albuquerque starter Mike Parisi as Bianchi worked a two-out walk and moved to third as Brown singled to right field. After an Andy Gonzalez walk to load the bases, second Statia knocked a two-run single (Audio) to right.

 

Albuquerque cut the lead in half in the home half of the first as Isotopes leadoff hitter Elian Herrera doubled and scored on a Scott Van Slyke RBI base hit.

 

Parisi departed the contest after a couple of warm-up pitches due to a non-disclosed injury to begin the third.

 

Bianchi and Statia (Audio) got in on the action again in the third on new pitcher Cole St. Clair, as both middle infielders doubled in the inning to push the Nashville lead to 3-1. Bianchi's double was the first Triple-A hit of his career in his first at-bat for the Sounds after the 25-year-old had a sacrifice fly and walked in his first two plate appearances.

 

Three consecutive walks by Nashville starting pitcher Brian Baker, followed by two straight sacrifice flies knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Former Sound Luis Cruz then gave Albuquerque its first lead at 4-3 with a go-ahead RBI double later in the frame.

 

Cruz later hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend Albuquerque's lead to 7-3. After two singles and a coaching visit to the mound by pitching coach Fred Dabney, reliever Amaury Rivas surrendered Cruz's third homer on the year on a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall.

 

Former Sounds Trent Oeltjen scored Albuquerque's final run on a sacrifice fly in the following frame.

 

Baker (1-2) gave up four runs on five hits and a season-high four walks in 4 1/3 innings pitched for the loss. Rivas allowed a season-high four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings.

 

Right-hander Johnnie Lowe pitched two scoreless frames to end the game while allowing one of two inherited runners to score. The 27-year-old has yet to surrender a run through his first 10 1/3 innings.

 

St. Clair (1-0) picked up the victory after giving up one run on in four innings of work in relief.

 

The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to open an eight-game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA-Rockies) and Reno Aces (AAA-Diamondbacks) of the Pacific Coast League Northern Division. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-2, 3.99) will toe the rubber for Nashville in the opener against Colorado Springs righty Brandon Hynick (0-1, 8.31).

I want the affiliates to win everyday, but if I was being honest, I would admit that the reason I am here is to follow the major league caliber prospects. This Nashville team is sorely lacking right now. Logan Schafer (1-5 2B) is certainly on the list, as is Caleb Gindl (0-1 K as a PH). That is pretty much it for higher level types. Sean Halton (0-3 BB) and Eric Farris (0-1 as a PH) are worth a box score peek. (sigh)

 

The pitching side is surely just as bad. Wily Peralta and Mike Fiers (tomorrows SP) are worthy follows. So are Jim Henderson and Amaury Rivas (1 2/3 IP 4 ER). Not much else exciting unfortunately.

 

Maybe some mid-season promotions will kick start the lineup and my interest level.

Wisconsin takes game one 2-0 and extends win streak to seven

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Sunday's rainout didn't slow down the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 2-0 in game one of a doubleheader on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The victory was the seventh straight for the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Rattlers got solo homers from Brandon Macias and Ben McMahan and shutout pitching from Andy Moye and Jacob Barnes to stay hot.

 

Macias put the Rattlers (19-11) on top in the bottom of the third. Macias lined the first pitch from Cam Bedrosian over the left field wall for his first home run of the season and a 1-0 Wisconsin lead.

 

McMahan made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. McMahan also hit his first homer of the season. His leadoff shot off Kerneles reliever Michael Johnson also cleared the left field wall.

 

Moye needed a little defensive help in the top of the fifth inning to keep the shutout intact. Matt Scioscia singled with two outs. Then, Abel Baker doubled into the corner in right field. Scioscia tried to score from first on the play. But, Max Walla threw a strike to Greg Hopkins in short right. The relay from Hopkins was just in time to get Scioscia for the final out of the inning. That was the only scoring threat of the game for the Kernels (13-17).

 

Moye went five innings before turning the game over to Jacob Barnes. Moye struck out three, allowed three hits, and did not walk a batter.

 

Barnes issued a two out walk in the top of the sixth inning, but nothing else. Barnes would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh inning to nail down his first save of the season.

Gotta love that Chris finds the time to get the game story up between games of a double header, he's just a machine. Andrew Moye is an interesting prospect, I'm not sure where to peg him exactly, but his early returns in full season ball have been very good. Ditto for Jacob Barnes who's rate stats are upside down but yet has gotten very good results because hitters just don't make good contact against him at this level. Moye's final line 5IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, and 3SOs throwing 54 pitches and 36 for strikes.

 

Cam Bredosian was the opposing pitcher and he should be a name that is familiar to most if not all followers of this forum. He was the 1st round selection of the Angels (29) in 2010 and prior to this year he had only pitched 12 professional innings. He had an elbow problem right away and the Angels training staff took the rehab route with it and then decided last spring training to do TJ surgery anyway, at least we aren't the only ones... Cam got a ton of pub last week from Baseball America and MiLB.com regarding his comeback, I'm impressed that he jumped right to full season ball in his first healthy professional season. Jack Z. grabbed him (of course). Garrison made a single MLB appearance for the Yankees last year. Still just 25, it's conceivable he could get another big league chance someday.

I thought he'd be the one in that deal to make it to the bigs and last. Injuries suck.
