Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Today’s interview is with Sounds right-hander Mark Rogers, who has put together consecutive solid outings for the Sounds on his way back from surgery on both wrists last season. The Brewers’ ’04 1st-round pick also discusses the rehab process from carpal tunnel syndrome and his high school days in Maine when he was offered a baseball scholarship by Miami, a hockey scholarship by Dartmouth and a soccer scholarship by Duke (he turned down all three to sign with The Crew as the 5th overall pick in the draft).

Sounds Knock Off Isotopes, 4-3, On Sunday Afternoon

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds edged Albuquerque, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park to snap a three-game losing streak.

 

First baseman Sean Halton enjoyed a solid day at the dish for the Sounds, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Eric Farris and Hainley Statia added two-hit efforts for Nashville in the win.

 

The Sounds (9-20) got onto the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Halton ripped an RBI double to the left-center wall off Albuquerque starter Michael Antonini to plate Statia, who preceded him by drawing a walk.

 

Albuquerque answered in the bottom of the frame, knotting the contest at 1-1. Antonini reached on a one-out infield single then raced around the basepaths with the tying score on Elian Herrera's triple to right off Nashville right-hander Wily Peralta. In the next at-bat, Sounds third baseman Erick Almonte kept it a tie game as he deftly snared a grounder off the bat of Ivan De Jesus, Jr. and fired to the plate to retire Herrera as he attempted to score the go-ahead run.

 

Nashville jumped back in front in the fifth as Farris' speed on the basepaths paid off for the visitors. After the Sounds' second baseman drew a one-out walk, he advanced to second on an Antonini balk during a stolen base attempt, moved to third on a Jordan Brown flyout to center, and hustled home on a wild pitch to stake the visitors to a 2-1 advantage.

 

Once again, the Isotopes had an immediate answer for a Sounds rally and another solid Nashville defensive play prohibited Albuquerque from taking a lead.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Baisley greeted Sounds reliever Donovan Hand with a single to center and moved to second on a one-out Jerry Sands single. After Hand struck out Tim Federowicz for the second out, Nashville manager Mike Guerrero summoned Daniel Meadows from the bullpen to face Matt Angle, who ripped a double to left to bring home Baisley with the tying run. Sands also attempted to score on the play but was gunned down at the plate on a bang-bang play following an outstanding relay from Brown to Statia to Maldonado.

 

Herrera (2-for-3) staked Albuquerque to its first lead of the afternoon in the sixth by belting a one-out solo homer to left off Meadows. The infielder's second longball of the year gave the Isotopes a 3-2 advantage.

 

The back-and-forth scoring continued as the Sounds took their third lead of the afternoon with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh against the Albuquerque bullpen. With runners on first and second, Brown lifted an RBI double to center off Derrick Loop to bring home Schafer with the tying run. Pinch-hitter Jeff Bianchi, making his Sounds debut, followed with a sacrifice fly to center to greet new reliever Ryan Tucker and plate Farris with the go-ahead run.

 

The Nashville bullpen did a solid job of working out of jams and protecting the lead in the late innings.

 

After former Sound Luis Cruz reached third with only one out in the seventh, left-hander Juan Perez struck out Federowicz and Angle in succession to escape the jam unscathed. In the eighth, Jim Henderson inherited a runner on second and one out and kept Albuquerque off the board.

 

Henderson closed out the victory with a perfect ninth and recorded the final five outs overall to nail down his first save of the season. The right-hander has not allowed a run in his 15 2/3 innings of work this season.

 

Johnnie Lowe (2-0) picked up his second victory for Nashville after retiring the lone batter he faced in the contest. Loop (2-1) was charged with the loss for Albuquerque after suffering a blown save, allowing two runs in just one-third of an inning of action.

 

Peralta took a no-decision for the Sounds after throwing a season-high 92 pitches in just four innings of action, allowing one run on four hits. The right-hander walked a season-high five batters and struck out five in his outing, lowering his season ERA to 3.55 with the effort.

 

Antonini, who left the game in line for a victory, also did not factor in the decision despite a quality start for the 'Topes. The southpaw allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six in his six frames.

 

The teams wrap up the series with a 1:05 p.m. CT finale on Monday afternoon. Right-hander Brian Baker (1-1, 6.27) will make the start for Nashville to face Albuquerque right-hander Mike Parisi (1-1, 2.25).

Wily Peralta struggled through an outing that yielded good results. 4 IP 4 H 1 R 1 ER 5 BB 5 K 7:0 GO:FO. Zero easy innings on the night but Peralta worked his magic to keep the runners stranded. Johnnie Lowe, one of 5 Sounds relievers on the night, got one out and the win. Juan Perez and Jim Henderson decimated the hitters over the final three innings.

 

7-hole hitter 1B Sean Halton went 3-4 with two 2B. Hainley Statia (2-3 2B BB) and Eric Farris (2-4 BB) had multi-hit nights. Logan Schafer walked twice in five Plate appearances.

Manatees topped by Cardinals in 11 innings

JUPITER, Fla. -The Brevard County Manatees blew their second consecutive ninth inning lead as they fell 6-5 to the Palm Beach Cardinals in 11 innings at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday night.

 

Up 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Manatees' closer Casey Medlen came in to try and shut the door on the Cardinals. He allowed a lead-off single to Chris Edmondson and then walked Niko Vasquez to put two on with no outs. Geoffrey Klein then grounded into a double play to put Edmondson on third with two outs.

 

Medlen then faced off with Jonathan Rodriguez and with Rodriguez at the plate, Medlen threw a wild pitch that allowed Edmondson to score and tie the game at 5-5. It was Medlen's first blown save of the season.

 

In the top of the 11th, Brevard County (13-17) had Mike Walker on second with two outs as Franklin Romero Jr. singled to right field. Walker tried to score from second on the hit, but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Alan Ahmady.

 

Thomas Keeling relieved Medlen in the 11th and got two quick outs, but then allowed back-to-back walks to Niko Vasquez and Klein to put two on with two out. Vance Albitz pinch ran for Vasquez at second and scored as the next batter, Jonathan Rodriguez singled to left for the game-winning hit.

 

Down 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Manatees put together a big inning in the fifth as they scored five runs off of Palm Beach (15-15) starter Kevin Siegrist. Nick Shaw drove in two with a single and Cody Hawn had a bases-clearing double to drive in three more.

 

With that two-RBI single in the fifth, Shaw has now reached base in 22 consecutive games; while Hawn went 3-for-5 on the night.

 

The Cardinals cut the lead to 5-4 as Ahmady had a two-out, three-run double off of Brevard County starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann. Jungmann (2-3, 2.93) allowed four runs - three earned - in 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just three hits, while walking two and striking out five Palm Beach hitters.

 

The Manatees will look to earn a spilt in their four-game set with the Cardinals as the two teams close out the series on Monday morning at 10:35 a.m.

 

Jimmy Nelson (2-1, 1.73) will toe the rubber for Brevard County in hopes of ending the 'Tees two-game skid. Nelson is currently second in the Florida State League in strikeouts as he has fanned 39 in 36 1/3 innings of work.

 

Palm Beach, looking for the series win, will send Carlos Martinez to the mound. Martinez (1-1, 2.45) was originally slated to pitch Sunday, but will take the hill on Monday. He pitched in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game.

Taylor Jungmann was cruising through a fantastic start until the 7th inning. Taylor loaded the bases and then gave up a 2-out double. Final line: 6 2/3 IP 3 H 4 R 3 ER 2 BB 5 K 1 HBP 12:1 GO:FO. Taylor has been consistently good all season. Greg Holle spared Jungmann of further damage by stranding his runner. Casey Medlen blew the save and Wild Thomas Keeling gave up the walk-off in the 11th.

 

Cody Hawn (3-5 2B) had his weekly big game. Shea Vucinich had two more hits. He is red-hot right now. Nick Shaw (1-4 BB) keeps chugging along. Shaw did commit his 7th error.

Cardinals Rally Again, Clip Manatees, 6-5

The Palm Beach Cardinals (15-15) came from behind for the second night in a row to stun the Brevard County Manatees (13-17), 6-5 in 11 innings.

 

The Cardinals got on the board early, as Mike O'Neill reached on error and Ronny Gil singled behind him to make to put two runners on base. After a passed ball, Starlin Rodriguez ground out to bring in O' Neill. However, the Cardinals could not get another run as they stranded Gil.

 

After the inning, runs were tough to come by as Taylor Jungmann and Kevin Siegriest went scoreless until the fifth. In the top of the fifth, the Manatees went off and scored five runs on four hits. His control that had been flawless all game abounded him in the frame, as walked and hit a batter. Nick Shaw delivered a two-run single, while T.J. Mittelstaedt delivered the big blow with a bases clearing double to make it 5-1. (Uhhhhh, no.)

 

The game looked at of reach, as Taylor Jungmann was coasting through the order, giving up one hit through six innings. However, in the seventh the Cardinals rallied to put three on the board as Alan Ahmady delivered with a bases clearing double over the left fielder's head.

 

The Cardinals entered the ninth inning down by a run, and for the second night in a row they delivered as Chris Edmondson scored on a wild pitch to knot it up at 5-5.

 

In the bottom of the 11th, the Cardinals scored the game-winner on an RBI single by Jonathan Rodriguez. After two out walks to Niko Vasquez and Geoff Klein, Rodriguez came in with a chance to win it and delivered with a single to left.

 

The Cardinals were led by Alan Ahmady who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Chris Edmondson added two hits.

 

Dean Kiekhefer recorded the victory with his two solid innings from the pen.

 

The Cardinals finish the home stand tomorrow morning as they take on the Brevard County Manatees at 10:35 p.m. Carlos Martinez will take the ball as he will face Jimmy Nelson.

The words required to sugar coat this one are escaping me at the moment, it was ugly. Dan Merlinger just hasn't been able gain a foothold here in the early going, I thought he may have been on the upswing after his last start but I was mistaken. None the less he's still an interesting prospect, and the only LHP north of Bradley worth discussing as a possible rotation addition in the future. His final line 5.0 IP, 6H, 5ER, 3BB, a balk, 1HR, and 4SO. Curiously there were no pitch counts in the box score, I wonder if that will be the case for the entire Jackson series? Merklinger was followed by Roque Mercedes who was bad enough he pushed his season ERA up over 12 and his spot in the organization should be tenuous at best, personally I don't get the fascination with Mercedes. Bradley Banks pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings though he did allow 2 of Rogue's inherited runners to score.

 

The Stars managed just 5 hits but from a prospect perspective at least Scooter Gennett had 2 of them and a double, he's now hit in 5 consecutive games. Kentrail Davis added a double and Khris Davis did not appear in today's game. I'd rather we not see Khris again until he's fully healthy, playing at less 100% isn't working for him as he doesn't manage to stay in the line-up more than a couple of days at a time. The Stars committed 2 errors, both of the throwing variety, the culprits were newly promoted Juan Sanchez and Anderson De La Rosa. No Huntsville player stole a base and the defense went 0-2 on steal attempts.

Notes for Huntsville:

 

The injury OF Khris Davis has been nursing is a calf injury, and yes, he did re-aggravate it on the basepaths the other evening -- frustrating, no word on a possible return to the DL.

In 2011 / 2012 at the AA level, reliever Roque Mercedes has allowed 73 hits and 28 walks (101 baserunners) in 45.2 innings. Mercedes was once on the Brewers 40-man, when he was re-claimed from the Diamondbacks organization. Mercedes originally was dealt to Arizona in one of the Felipe Lopez acquisitions.
