Yes, the first album was closer to rap of the day but every album after that got further and further away from the genre as a whole. Even that first album was groundbreaking in the use of Led Zeppelin samples. Run DMC did a little of the crossover sampling to that point with Aerosmith but the Beasties basically made nearly a whole album with it.

I'd actually argue, probably unsuccessfully, that MCA was the only one who could have been a straight up rapper on his own.
