I can't remember the last time a musician died and I really felt sad (sorry Whitney). I still remember the first time I heard Ill Communication.

This sucks.

For me, it was Ronnie James Dio...

They started out as almost a novelty act but became arguably one of the most original acts of the 90's and 00's. Paul's Boutique is a classic on par with pretty much any rap album out there. MCA will be missed for sure. RIP, Adam.

Paul's Boutique is just a landmark album period, no need to pigeonhole it into rap. To me, it approaches the highest levels for both music (is there any way the Dust Brothers could assemble even half those samples in this day and age? sadly, no.) and lyrics (the fact that they manage to reference both 'Love Connection' and Japanese baseball mere seconds apart is absolutely amazing). Sadly, listening to it from here on out will never be the same.

The Beasties were among my favorite groups throughout high school. I loved their hip hop but they knew how to write hardcore songs when they wanted to (Aglio E Olio is a must have).

The first time I saw them was at Lollapalooza in 94 on the Summerfest grounds. It was unbelieveable. Then the following year they returned to the Mecca and though there was like an hour and a half between sets, it still ranks among the best shows i've seen.

In my opinion, they completely changed the way many people view music, and not only were they catchy, they were smart. I didn't really get into Hello Nasty or the Five Burroughs much, but everything prior to that was pretty much a staple to my stereo.

I haven't been this bummed about a musician since Joe Strummer passed away 10 years ago.

RIP MCA. Much respect.

Forget the Cardinals, the Mets are the classiest team in baseball. Period.

Same here

The Beasties came out when i was in high school and still was mainly just listening to stuff like Motley Crue and 60's/70's rock.

Then i got turned on to bands like the Beasties, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, Chili Peppers, Bauhuas, Misfits, Bad Brains etc and it all combined to completely open my mind to all kinds of different music, including rap.

While i loved all three of the Beastie Boys, MCA was always my favorite in how he rapped. So when my daughter called me the other day to tell me MCA was dead, it hit me harder than i would have expected. HBO re-aired the 2012 Rock and Roll HOF ceremonies last night, which included the Beastie Boys and it saddened me to see only Mike D and Ad-Rock up there accepting the honors.

I have to agree, MCA was by far my favorite member. His voice was just so different from the other two it was perfect.

Find one male in his late 30's to early 40's who doesn't know the lyrics to every song on "License to Ill" or remember where he was the first time he heard "Fight For Your Right".

RIP Adam.

I know a guy in his early 30's who doesn't know who Led Zeppelin is so I'm sure they are out there.

Sorry to say it, but I am your man.

I never got into their music. "Fight For Your Right to Party" is the only song I can name by title. The song just didn't "do it" for me and, unfortunately, I didn't think to highly of the group from there. You know what they say . . . first impressions . . .

I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm sure there music is fine and probably better than "Fight for Your Right" but I never gave it a chance and probably never will. Feel free to close your mouths now. Or at least wipe the drool off your lips.

Pitchleague, right now I feel and very likely look like the Aflac duck from the Yogi Berra barbershop commercial. :)

Everyone has their own opinions, but I vividly recall their music being so different from anything I had ever heard. From hearing Apple 106 playing "Fight For Your Right" on my boombox for the first time, to putting in the License to Ill cassette and hearing "Rhymin' and Stealin'" right from the get-go, I was hooked.

Yea, don't worry pitchleague. You like what you like. Heck, I haven't even heard of most of the bands mentioned by the young hipsters in here, much less know if I like the music or not.

I was an early adaptor to rap as a white suburban kid back in the 80s. Beasties were considered somewhat of a "sell-out/ not TRUE rap" back then, but I think the hip hop community slowly but surely gave the Beasties their props. And i loved them from the beginning. Rymin and Stealin, No SLeep 'til Brooklyn, New Style... outstanding!

After Paul's Boutique (which was pure genius) they sort of lost me, but that's personal taste.

That would be me (you are not alone pitch)...Metalhead by trade...Not a fan of anything that has to do with Rap, but I can respect the Beasties for providing some funny videos back in the day.

The Beasties were "rap" insofar as they didn't sing. They were not part of rap "culture" at all and certainly didn't sound like any rap artist before or since. I think they're almost genreless.
