Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Brad Krause reminded me that former Brewers farmhand LH reliever Caleb Thielbar is excelling with Minnesota's High-A team this season.

 

And just like that, Thielbar (career stats) got promoted to AA today. He went the indy route after his Brewer release, and then the Twins inked him, good for perseverence.

Manatees drop Monday matinee to Clearwater

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees lost the final game of their six-game homestand on Monday afternoon to the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 5-1 at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Offensively, the Manatees were held to just four hits, struck out nine times, left eight men on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The 'Tees were able to draw five walks off of Clearwater's starter Brody Colvin over six innings but it only resulted to one run.

 

The lone Brevard County run came in the bottom of the sixth as Cody Hawn led off the inning with a walk and was driven in two batters later by Shea Vucinich who laced a RBI double down the left field line.

 

Brandon Williamson made his second start for the Manatees and went just three innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He walked two, hit two batters and struck out one. Out of the bullpen, Brian Garman (3 IP), Eric Arnett (2 IP) and Greg Holle (1 IP) combine to shutout the Threshers the rest of the way.

 

Clearwater's big inning came in the top of the second as they scored four times. Both Cameron Rupp and Peter Lavin each had a two-run single in the inning.

 

Brevard County closes out the homestand by going 3-3 and now sits with a record of 11-13 with the calendar turning to May.

 

The Manatees will hit the road for a seven-game road trip, which will begin with a three-game set with the Tampa Yankees beginning on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

 

2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann (2-2, 2.45) will take the hill for the Manatees. Jungmann's last start came against the Yankees last Thursday and he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings and struck out five.

 

Tampa will counter with Michael O'Brien (2-1, 4.50). O'Brien's struck out seven in six innings of work in his last start, which was against the 'Tees this past Thursday.

The Phillies, much like the Brewers, emptied their farm system coffers to acquire pitching. Now, most would agree that the remaining system is barren. One of the holdovers who some like is Brody Colvin. Colvin is repeating A+ this season after a very mediocre 2011 campaign. He has been improved in 2012, and continued that improvement against the Manatees today.

 

Brandon Williamson was roughed up but up three relievers combined for a strong finish. Brian Garman (3 IP 0 H 0 R 3 K HBP 2.77 season ERA), Eric Arnett (2 IP 1 H 0 R 1 BB 3 K 3.18 season ERA) and Greg Holle (1 IP 1 H 0 R 0 BB 1 K 2.84 season ERA) are part of what might be the best overall pitching staff I have seen on a Brewer affiliate.

 

The hitters, fielders and base runners were all sub-par and not really worth mentioning in this one. Hopefully these boys took advantage of their entire afternoon off and re-charged their batteries.

Big seventh gets Rattlers past Bowling Green

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five times in the seventh inning to rally for a 7-2 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Roberts put the Rattlers in front with a two-run single and Chadwin Stang delivered a three-run double in the frame to send Wisconsin to their second straight win.

 

Wisconsin (14-11) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Roberts was at second and John Dishon was at first with one out. Stang sent a grounder to third. Dishon was out at second by Ryan Brett mishandled the exchange from his glove make the throw and the ball trickled away from him to allow Roberts to come around and score.

 

Rattlers starting pitcher Andy Moye was cruising through four innings, but Todd Glaesmann tripled to start the fifth. Jeff Malm was next and his single plated Glaesmann with the tying run. Alejandro Segovia was next and his single put runners on first and second with no outs.

 

Joel Caminero attempted a sacrifice bunt up the third base line, but Moye fielded the ball and had time to get Malm at third, but he threw the ball wildly and Malm scored to put Bowling Green (14-11) up 2-1. Moye settled down after that play and did not allow another run.

 

The Rattlers started their seventh inning rally on a one out single by Greg Hopkins. Hot Rods reliever Andrew Bellatti walked Yadiel Rivera and Ben McMahan to load the bases and he was replaced by Charlie Cononie.

 

Roberts greeted Cononie by grounding a 2-0 pitch through the left side of the infield. Hopkins scored the tying run and Rivera beat the throw home to put the Rattlers up 3-2.

 

A walk to John Dishon loaded the bases and brought Stang up with a chance to pad the lead. The Hot Rods brought the infield in and Stang took advantage by flaring a hit to shallow right for a three-run double and a 6-0 lead.

 

McMahan concluded the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of eighth.

 

Jacob Barnes pitched a pair of scoreless innings and struck out two to pick up his first Midwest League win.

 

Wisconsin took two of three from Bowling Green in the series. The Rattlers finished their six-game homestand 4-2.

 

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. The team returns to action on Wednesday night in Clinton, Iowa to start a series with the Clinton LumberKings. Matt Miller (0-3, 4.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Clinton has Ambioris Hidalgo (1-2, 5.40) set to start. Game time is 6:30pm.

Chris is making my job pretty easy these days and as much as I like following prospects, it's even more fun when the teams are playing well. Andrew Moye didn't walk a batter in his 6 innings and allowed 4 hits while striking out 4 as well. Seth Harvey slammed the door in the 9th with a strike out, ground out, and a pop up. The Rattler pitching in this series was outstanding and check out the season pitching stats here. Of the 4 pitchers who have struggled, I still believe 3 of 4 can turn things around in hurry.

 

Chadwin Stang has hit in 7 of his last 8 games going 2-5 today with that huge double but outside of him the top of the order struggled, the next 3 hitters had a rough day going 0-12. Gregory Hopkins went 3-4, Ben McMahan 2-3 with a walk, and Tyler Roberts has done well since the JSO article going 1-2 with 2 walks. Moye had the only error and John Dishon picked up an OF assist.

The Reds super SS prospect Billy Hamilton is the only divisional mention from the BA weekend positional prospect summary. Billy was a 2nd round pick in 2009 and BA currently has him ranked as the #2 player in the Reds system.

I missed the best defensive play of the year. This is what happened: Yadiel Rivera sent a hard grounder to third, the ball deflected to Juniel Querecuto at short. Querecuto fielded the ball with his barehand and just got Rivera at first. This is what I saw: Yadiel Rivera hard grounder to third, a dad put his eight year daughter on his shoulders right in front of the radio booth window, and Rivera walking back to the Timber Rattlers dugout. Everyone is telling me that it was a great play. This is the defensive play that’s going to wind up going on MiLB.TV highlights. I know it.

The BA weekend pitching prospect summary featured 2 Brewer prospects. Both Drew Gagnon and Jimmy Nelson made the top game score list though neither one was commented on in the break out section of the post. However Reds LHP prospect Tony Cingrani was singled out in the comments. Here's a quick scouting report on Tony:

 

While his plus fastball was already 95mph as a starter, it can touch 99 in relief, and he flashes just enough of a loopy slider and acceptable change to keep hitters more or less honest. Give him a few months in pro ball, and we could see him in Cincinnati late 2012. He should compete for the closer's role in 2013, at worst.

 

Edit. Here's BA's scouting report:

Tony Cingrani broke former big leaguer Tim Byrdak's single-season and career strikeout records at South Suburban (Ill.) JC, then followed Byrdak's path and transferred to Rice. After he posted an 8.59 ERA in six starts as a junior, the Owls overhauled Cingrani's delivery and moved him to the bullpen, and his transformation has been dramatic. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound lefthander has quickened his arm action and is staying more compact and on top of his pitches, and he's working at 92-94 mph and touching 97 with his fastball. He finished the regular season with a 1.92 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 52 innings. He pitches mostly off his heater, though the hope is that his below-average slider will improve once he gets more consistent innings in pro ball. He's one of the more attractive senior signs in the draft.

Schafer Provides Game-Winning Hit In Sounds' 4-3 VictoryOver Omaha

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Outfielder Logan Schafer crushed a game-winning double to center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Nashville Sounds a 4-3 victory over the division-rival Omaha Storm Chasers in the opener of a four-game series at Greer Stadium on Monday night.

 

With the game tied 3-3 entering the ninth, outfielder Corey Patterson reached an infield groundout, moved to second on a single from catcher Martin Maldonado, and scored on the game-winning hit from Schafer (3-for-5).

 

It was Nashville's (6-17) second win in a row and third last at-bat victory of the year. The victory was also the first against Omaha this season through the first five contests.

 

Sounds starting pitcher Mark Rogers matched his Triple-A career high with 5 1/3 innings (well, it is something) of work in a no-decision. The 26-year-old gave up one run on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two in 77 pitches, 47 for strikes.

 

After Schafer singled to lead off the contest, second baseman Brooks Conrad crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall for 2-0 lead. Conrad's third long ball of the season also extended his hitting streak to a team-best eight straight games.

 

Nashville was able to tack on another run in the fifth against Omaha starter Mike Montgomery for a 3-0 advantage. Schafer pushed a perfectly-placed two-out bunt passed the pitcher to advance to first and was followed by a walk to Conrad. Third baseman Taylor Green then singled to right field to bring home Schafer.

 

Omaha first baseman Clint Robinson put the Storm Chasers on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a solo blast off the clubhouse beyond the center field wall. The homer was Robinson's fifth of the year.

 

Storm Chasers third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff led off the visiting half of the seventh frame with a double off reliever Victor Garate. Two batters later, Omaha center fielder and former Sound Jason Bourgeois hammered a game-tying line-drive homer to left field. The two-run shot was his first of the year.

 

Garate was charged with two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings while giving Nashville its third blown save in five chances.

 

Jim Henderson (2-1) fanned two over pitched two scoreless frames for the victory. The right-hander has yet to allow a run this season, extending his scoreless streak to a 12.0 innings over six appearances, both team-highs.

 

Montgomery recorded his third straight quality start in a no-decision. The Royals' top prospect gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress (2-2) was charged with the loss with the run in the ninth.

 

The Sounds and Storm Chasers continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium. Sounds right-hander and Brewers top prospect Wily Peralta (0-2, 3.68) takes the mound against Omaha southpaw Will Smith (0-1, 3.76).
