Topps MLB Sticker Book

Paul77

Some of the conversation about baseball cards (and the fact that kids don't collect for the sake of collecting) got me thinking. My 5 year old has zero interest in collecting cards. None. I tried to get him into the hobby, not so he could collect valuable cards, but because I remember how awesome it felt to pull a Brewer card from a random, off the shelf pack as a kid. It was a huge thrill for me. But, it also taught me the names of players and all the teams. I was fascinated with the logos and studying the pictures.

Anyhow, my boy was not interested at all. If he didn't get a Brewer card, he didn't care at all. However, he is totally into the Topps MLB Sticker Book. He loves it. For me, it's fun watching him open packs of stickers and hoping for Brewer. He's also getting into all the teams and starting to know players names. It's a ton of fun. It's about as close as you can get to the "good old days" of collecting for the love of collecting. Not for profit, just for the thrill of completing your collection.

The best part is - it's cheap! Packs of stickers are $1 at Target. Anyhow, I just thought I'd share. We have some duplicate stickers. If anyone wants them, let me know and I'll send them out to you.

Awesome to hear that he likes the stickers!

Don't give up on the cards. Five is a little young. Some stuff that we bought for my daughter when she was young is just now being rediscovered. She turns 8 next month. After he gets better at reading and math, cards might have some appeal.

I noticed the stickers at Target last week and it looked like a fun thing for new collectors.

I had the Topps Sticker Books throughout the early 80"s and they were fun to do. I could never find that Duane Kuiper sticker.

Paul, I agree with Jim. Five is too young to get interested. I'm not saying he can't be interested, but its not unreasonable that he's not. Your boy likes the Brewers, so I would stay with that. Miller Park and Pick n Save have team sets of the 2012 team(PnS is cheaper). You could also find a card shop and choose current Brewers for him. While your at it pick up some plastic sheets and make it a father/son type thing.

I also started with sticker books as a 7 or 8 year old back in '87/'88. I remember getting the Dale Sveum and BJ Surhoff Brewer stickers. That was a vivid memory from my childhood, actually.
