Brevard County: LHP Jed Bradley at home vs. Clearwater (Phillies), 5:35 PM gametime

Sorry, no audio for this series...

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Wisconsin: RHP Mark Williams at home vs. Bowling Green (Rays), 6:15 PM pre-game, 6:35 gametime

Chris Mehring is back to do his customary fantastic work as the Voice of the Rattlers. Follow him on Twitter @CMehring; we'll link to Chris' infamous blog often -- Rattler Radio.

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; Wisconsin is one of only two (Great Lakes) Midwest League clubs that have all their home games available via MiLB.TV; Chris' call provides the audio. So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and 24 Stars' road games (one Helena series this summer, too).

Clearwater (Mets) 10 Brevard County 3

'Tees thrashed by Threshers, 10-3

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped the series opener to the Clearwater Threshers on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium by the score of 10-3.

Lefty Jed Bradley (2-2, 2.79) struggled as he allowed six runs - five earned - in five innings of work. He gave up six hits and walked two, while striking out five. It snaps a streak of four consecutive quality starts by the Manatees (10-12) pitching staff.

A two-run homer by Clearwater's Jim Murphy gave the Threshers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Manatees got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning, thanks to back-to-back RBI groundouts by Cody Hawn and Mike Walker.

Brevard County took its first and only lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Adam Weisenburger scored on a bunt attempt by Franklin Romero Jr. The bunt went to the first base side and the first baseman Murphy tried to tag Romero Jr. out and initially Romero Jr. was called safe. That prompted a visit to the umpires by Clearwater manager Chris Truby. The two umps then got together and ruled Romero Jr. out, which sent Manatees manager Joe Ayrault into a frenzy that led to him being ejected from the game.

Clearwater (10-10) took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third and then two more in the top of the fifth as Bradley's night ended after five innings with Brevard County trailing 6-3.

Thomas Keeling and Eric Arnett each threw a scoreless inning of relief after Bradley exited. Connor Whalen entered the game in the eighth and proceeded to allow four runs on five hits in his two innings of work.

Once again, the Manatees couldn't get their bats going as the struck out eight times and went 1-for12 with runners in scoring position. T.J. Mittelstaedt did go 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He currently leads Brevard County with a .286 batting average.

Brevard County and Clearwater will square off again on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. in the second game of this three-game set.

The Manatees will send Hiram Burgos (0-1, 1.27) to the mound. In his last start this past Tuesday against Clearwater, Burgos took a no-hitter into the ninth inning but ended up with the loss in a 1-0 game.

The Threshers will counter with southpaw Adam Morgan (0-1, 3.42). He threw seven shutout innings and struck out six against Brevard County this past Tuesday.

Box Score

When Eric Arnett owns the cleanest pitching line (1 IP 1 H 0 R 0 BB 2 K 1 WP) and backup catcher Adam Weisenburger (1-2 2 BB) accounts for one third of the Manatee base runners, you can go to bed knowing that Yovanni Gallardo the Brewers will eventually beat the Cardinals again, because this is baseball and anything can happen. Okay, that is a bit dramatic, but still.

Jed Bradley started and probably wants another chance at it. He gave up 2 runs in each of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings. 5 IP 6 H 6 R 5 ER 2 BB 5 K 1 HR 4:5 GO:FO. My box score diagnosis suggests Bradley did not keep the ball down. Wild Thomas Keeling (1 IP 0 H 0 R 1 BB 1 K 2:0 GO:FO), who is on an early season audition for a place in folk rock band Holle and Williams, pitched well.

T.J. Mittelstaedt (2-4 2B SB) had the only crooked number in the hit column for the 'Tees. T.J. has been sporting a thick (think Ryan Braun) OPS around .900 or north all season. Typically, only the cream-of-the-crop of hitting prospects make noise in Brevard County. Logan Schafer won a batting title. Taylor Green had a big year. Jon Lucroy hit 20 bombs. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris were decent and, of course, impatient. The hitting conditions are one reason everyone was pretty enthused when Khris Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard went off last season. My belated point is that if Mittelstaedt can keep raking, he should be taken seriously as a big league caliber bat.

Sounds Back On Winning Track With Shutout Of I-Cubs

04/28/2012 11:47 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Saturday evening at Principal Park in the middle game of a weather-shortened three-game series.

Three Sounds hurlers combined on the three-hit shutout, the club's second of the young season. Mike Fiers started and worked six frames, Juan Perez put up zeroes in the seventh and eighth innings, and Amaury Rivas closed out the win by notching his first career save with a scoreless ninth.

Iowa had runners on base in six of the nine innings but did not advance a runner past second all evening, finishing 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against Nashville pitching.

Nashville (5-17), which recorded a win for the first time since April 15th, broke up a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning against Iowa reliever Casey Coleman.

After Logan Schafer legged out a one-out double, Iowa intentionally walked Brooks Conrad to put two runs on base for Caleb Gindl, who hit a grounder to first. I-Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit Conrad with the throw to second as he attempted to turn a double play and the ball caromed into left field, allowing Schafer to score the night's first run. Sean Halton followed with an RBI double to left to bring home Conrad for a 2-0 advantage.

The Sounds missed a chance to add to the lead, however, as Taylor Green was intentionally walked to load the bases but Coleman struck out Martin Maldonado looking and induced an inning-ending groundout from Eric Farris to escape the jam with no further damage.

Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Corey Patterson led off with a triple off Coleman and scored on Hainley Statia's ensuing RBI single to center to extend the Sounds' lead to 3-0.

Conrad went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to extend Nashville's longest hitting streak of the season to seven games. He is batting .395 (15-for-38) in 12 games this season.

Both starting pitchers turned in outstanding efforts but took no-decisions in the contest.

Fiers continued his career dominance of the I-Cubs with six frames of scoreless, three-hit ball. In three starts against Iowa, the right-hander has posted a miniscule 0.82 ERA (2er/22.0ip).

Iowa starter Chris Rusin continued his strong start to the season by authoring his third quality start of the year, allowing only three hits and striking out four Sounds batters over six scoreless innings to drop his season ERA to 2.63 through five starts.

Perez (1-0) picked up the win with his two hitless innings of relief for the Sounds and Rivas worked around a one-out walk to put up a goose egg in the ninth and notch his first professional save in his 28th career relief outing.

The Sounds will attempt to secure their first winning series of the season when the teams complete the three-game set with a 1:05 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 7.50) makes his third start of the year for Nashville. Iowa will counter with right-hander Jay Jackson (1-2, 6.20).

Box Score

Mass Haas turns the tide for the Sounds

Fueled by trillions of Mass Haas' Twitter 1's and 0's, Michael Fiers pitched his best game of the season. 6 IP 3 H 0 R 1 BB 4 K 1 HBP 2:8 GO:FO 1 Pickoff on 72 pitches (48 strikes). "Rain down on me mana from heaven!", Fiers was quoted as saying after the final out.

*Heaven originates from an obscure rambler in Massachusetts (random guess).

Juan Sanchez ate up two innings while keeping the game scoreless and Amaury Rivas notched the save.

Other mana recipients included Brooks Conrad (2-3 2B 3B 2 BB), Sean Halton (1-3 2B 2 BB), Logan Schafer (1-4 2B) and Taylor Green (0-2 2 BB).

The game was scoreless until the top of the 8th.

Caleb Gindl, without the use of raining mana, gunned a runner at 1st base for sweet 1st inning DP.

Iowa Bottom of the 1st

Brett Jackson strikes out swinging.

Dave Sappelt singles on a line drive to left fielder Eric Farris.

Luis Valbuena flies into double play, right fielder Caleb Gindl to shortstop Edwin Maysonet to first baseman Sean Halton. Dave Sappelt doubled off 1st.

Final: Huntsville 2, @Mississippi 1 (10 innings)

Stars Capitalize On Braves Error

PEARL, Miss.- For the third game in a row, the Stars got a strong performance by their pitching staff to lead them to a victory, beating the Mississippi Braves by a score of 2-1 in ten innings on Saturday night.

While the two teams would only combine for ten hits total, the Stars got the offense started in the second inning with three hits. One of those being a RBI-single by shortstop Matt Cline to make the score 1-0.

After an RBI single by Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning, the pitching staffs from each team would take over.

For the Stars, starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn put together another strong start, going 5.0 innings while giving up just one run on three hits while striking out four batters. After Heckathorn exited before the sixth inning, the combination of RHP Bradley Blanks and RHP Jesus Sanchez held the Braves without a hit through the ninth inning.

In the top of the tenth inning, after Lee Haydel led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and then stole a base to get into scoring position, second basemen Scooter Gennett came up to the plate with two outs. On the ninth pitch of his at-bat with Mississippi RHP Billy Bullock, Gennett sent a groundball that would somehow find its way under the glove of Braves 1B Ian Gac and into right field, allowing Haydel to score the eventual game-winning run.

Stars RHP Robert Wooten shut down the door for the Stars in the bottom half of the inning, notching his fifth save of the season. Sanchez went on to earn the win in relief, improving to 2-0 on the season.

With the victory, the Stars have now won three straight and are a season-high two games over .500 at 13-11. The win also gives Huntsville its second series win of the season.

The finale of a five-game series between the two teams will begin on Sunday as Huntsville will send RHP Josh Stinson (3-1, 3.57 ERA) to the mound to square off against the Braves’ Gary Moran. First pitch is at 1:00 PM.

Huntsville box score

13-11, wheeeeeee! Does it ever feel to you like every game is either a one-run, extra-innings squeaker--which our team wins maybe 25% of the time--or a blowout loss?

Anyway, Heckathorn walked just one and threw 52 of his 81 pitches for strikes while posting a 10/1 GO/FO. His improvement has flown under the radar with the years some other pitchers are having, but his strikeout and walk rates are both going in the right directions relative to his disastrous stint at Huntsville last year, and he continues to be a ground-ball machine.

Kentrail Davis had two hits, but also struck out three times. Khris Davis again did not start, but pinch hit and struck out.

Cline and Andy Gonzalez were both on twice.

Huntsville play-by-play

Hunter Morris indeed has 11 doubles in April, yet his line sits at a relatively pedestrian .298/.333/.447, dragged down by just one home run and four walks (against 18 strikeouts) in 99 plate appearances. His double today came on a fly ball; I'd be interested to know how many of the 11 were near-homers and how many were just gappers.

The recap doesn't make it clear, but Gennett's grounder was ruled an error; he went 0-5.

Hot Rods stop the Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Bowling Green Hot Rods broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning Saturday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Bowling Green went on to hand the Rattlers a 6-0 loss at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Hot Rods used three pitchers to hold the Rattlers scoreless on four hits.

Both teams had chances to score early. But each time pitching and defense held the opponents off the board.

Bowling Green (14-9) had runners at the corners with no outs in the first inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Mark Williams recorded a strikeout and got a double play to get out of the inning.

Wisconsin (12-11) had the same situation in the bottom of the second inning and Bowling Green starter Trevor Shull got the same result as his defense turned an inning ending double play.

In the fourth, the Rattlers had the bases loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks. But, Shull dodged the bullet. Greg Hopkins sent a fly ball to shallow center and Max Walla tagged from third to try to score. The throw from Drew Vettleson beat Walla to the plate and catcher Alejandro Segovia held on for the third out after Walla crashed into him in an attempt to jar the ball loose.

Williams had retired ten straight from the start of the fourth through the first out of the seventh inning. But, a throwing error on Yadiel Rivera allowed Todd Glaesmann to reach. Jeff Malm was next and he sent a sinking liner to right field. Walla made a diving try for the ball, but could not make the catch and the ball scooted to the wall for an RBI triple.

Tyler Cravy relieved Williams after the triple and allowed an RBI double to Taylor Motter and Bowling Green was up 2-0.

Hot Rods reliever Jake Partridge, who took over in the bottom of the fifth inning, allowed one hit and faced the minimum over four innings of scoreless relief for his third win of the season.

The Hot Rods added four runs in the top of the ninth. Cravy walked the first two batters and - after a bunt moved both runners up - walked a third intentionally to load the bases. Kevin Shackelford took over for Cravy and gave up an RBI single to Alejandro Segovia, a two run single to Jake Hager, and an RBI single to Tyler Goeddel and the Hot Rods extended their lead to 6-0.

Chadwin Stang had a leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth against Austin Hubbard, but he was left stranded.

Saturday's shutout loss was the first for the Rattlers in 2012. The last time Wisconsin did not score in a game was August 13, 2011, a stretch of 43 games.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. David Goforth (2-1, 6.27) is scheduled to start and Fond du Lac native Chad Pierce is set to come in relief for Wisconsin. Bowling Green will send Ryan Carpenter (3-1, 3.13) to the hill. Game time is 1:05pm.

Sunday is a Brewers Sunday courtesy of 107.5, The Fan with a special appearance by Milwaukee Brewers mascot Bernie Brewer. Timber Rattlers players will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys during the game. Time Warner Cable customers can receive up to four half-priced reserved bleacher tickets when showing their TWC bill at time of ticket purchase. There is catch on the field before the game and a player autograph session after the game.

If you can't make it to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday's game is also available on MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin box score

Check out Chris's Nine after 9 for details on the interesting double plays mentioned above, plus the Rivera and Walla fielding misadventures. He also points out that, when Williams made it into the 7th without allowing a run, Wisconsin starting pitchers had a 20.3 scoreless-innings streak over the last three games--two of which they ended up losing.

Williams has thrown surprisingly well for the Rattlers, given that he was basically an anonymous guy who pitched in only six games, all of them in relief, for Helena last year; he wasn't even the best Williams in on the H-Crew. Still waiting on Cravy to come around as a reliever.

The Rattlers had four hits, so...yeah. They did walk four times, three of them by Jason Rogers and the fourth by Yadiel Rivera--his third walk of the year. Well, better three than two, and he's hitting better than he did at Wisconsin last year, albeit still pretty poorly.

Something to keep an eye on:

Mississippi Bottom of the 1st

Todd Cunningham grounds out, second baseman Scooter Gennett to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Defensive Substitution: Anderson De La Rosa replaces catcher Jason Jaramillo, batting 7th, playing catcher.

Andrelton Simmons grounds out, third baseman Andy Gonzalez to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Philip Gosselin reaches on fielding error by third baseman Andy Gonzalez.

Ian Gac strikes out swinging.

So either Jaramillo injured himself running to first to back up the play, or the scorer realized that De La Rosa was in the game even though Jaramillo may have been announced as in the starting lineup.
