BA takes a look at international signing success

TheCrew07

Tigers, Rangers Stand Out For Overseas Efforts

The article takes a look at how many players in BA's top 30 for each team were signed internationally and the team that originally signed the player gets the credit. So if team A signed a player and traded him to team B but that player is in the top 30 for team B then team A gets the credit. The Tigers have 16 players and the Rangers have 14, then there are a bunch of teams who have 11. The Brewers come in tied with the Athletics, Cards, and Orioles at 4 a piece.

The notable Brewers... Wily Peralta, Santo Manzanillo, Orlando Arcia.

Some of the team's have more in depth analysis attached but the Brewers didn't get any run though the Cards did, here's the part regarding the classies, and I'm not sure it's a very objective analysis.

Cardinals: Even though they appear toward the bottom of the list, what the Cardinals have done in the Dominican Republic in recent years is noteworthy. Other than the Yankees, the Cardinals are the only team with two Dominican signings in the Top 100. Righthander Carlos Martinez, who signed for $1.5 million in 2010, throws smoke with plus movement. The organization's faith in the bat of outfielder Oscar Taveras, who signed for $145,000 in 2008, looks prudent with Taveras excelling in Double-A at 19. The Cardinals struggled to find talent for many years in Latin America before the arrival of international director Moises Rodriguez, who was hired following the 2007 season, and Latin American supervisor Juan Mercado, who left the Cardinals after the 2011 season to join the Pirates

I think the Brewers are on the upswing in the International market. We sign the 3rd/4th tier guys with upside ad a few of them are showing progress. Maybe one day we will have ore payroll flexibility and we can splurge a little more.

Hopefully we won't need to because there will be an international draft.

What part makes you say this?

Well St Louis has had less success than we have with international signings overall, yet because they spent a ton of money on 2 players who are currently in the BA top 100 they deserve mention? They were in the bottom 8 with us, with exact same number of players total, just seems weird that they were the only team in the bottom talked about. The Brewers have recently refocused efforts in Latin America and are taking on a noteworthy new tact such as the academy which actually incorporates a school and such. Don't get me wrong, I think the Brewers overall record is pretty poor with Latin America and I certainly wouldn't expect them to be highlighted, but I don't see spending money as a new or discussion worthy approach to getting players from overseas. Isn't that just what all of the big market teams have been doing all along?

I don't know, it just struck me as arbitrary to highlight them because of the money spent on obvious talent. Unfortunately with most things in baseball it seems to come down to money, all they did was spend money and while they landed 2 really nice prospects, they aren't exceedingly active. The next lowest number of prospects for a team discussed was the Rockies who were tied with a bunch of teams at 7 prospects. Here's the bit about the Rockies, I think their success on a limited budget is noteworthy and deserving of discussion:

Rockies: The Rockies add quality pitching every year in Latin America under international director Rolando Fernandez, beating teams with great scouting and development rather than a bigger checkbook. The Rockies used Dominican righthander Aneury Rodriguez (2005) to trade for righthander Jason Hammel, while Dominican righthander Juan Nicasio (2006) is a flamethrower who pitched well last year until he suffered a freak neck injury after getting hit in the head with a line drive. Lefthander Edwar Cabrera led the minors in strikeouts last year and continues to befuddle hitters with his changeup. Dominican catcher WIlin Rosario's major league career has gotten off to an uneven start, but his raw power and arm strength make him one of the game's better catching prospects.

Yes.....exactly. They have a young flame thrower who is one of the games elite pitchers, and another top 100 pitching prospect.

There is nothing the least bit biased about talking about a team that may have signed the next Pedro and a top 100 prospect. And since this is about top LA signings and international signings on the top prospect lists, why wouldn't they get mentioned?

How interesting would the write up about the Brewers or most of the other teams be? In 2-3 years I think it could be VERY interesting and I expect to have as many as 10 prospects grace our top 10 in the near future, but as of now, it's Wily Peralta, and nobody else of consequence in the big picture. Some guys at the very-very low levels who haven't earned prospect status and a couple guys we like, but aren't exactly rocketing up the prospect boards.
