Sorry, no audio for this series...

Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Not to take anything away from the on going excitement over Downhill thunder, but how about Max Walla as another guy who made some big improvements last year, and on the plate discipline side has certainly continued so far this year, big bump in walk rate obviously. Just as interestingly though the K rate is down quite a bit as well even though he has had a batting average cold streak, and move out of Helena. His power was always there...

Clearwater (Phillies) 4 Brevard County 2

Box Score

Jimmy Nelson started for the Manatees and did not have his best game. Final line: 6 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 3 BB 4 K 1 HBP 9:3 GO:FO. The theme for his runs allowed were walks. Jimmy has displayed improved control thus far but this game was much like what we saw in 2011 from the big righty. Wild Thomas Keeling pitched next and breezed through his first inning before getting stuck in the 8th. Casey Medlen stranded a Keeling runner.

Second base 2-hitter T.J. Mittelstaedt had 2 more hits including a 2B. Reggie Keen was 1-3 with a BB out of the lead off spot. Shawn Zarraga hit a 2B. I really have to stretch sometimes for the BC offense. Tonight, Phillie pup Austin Wright was fantastic. The 6'4" southpaw former Mississippi Bulldog is off to a fantastic start to his career.

No errors for the 'Tees.

Game Log

Nothing like a free out to lead off a lost big inning.

Brevard County Top of the 5th

Shawn Zarraga bunt grounds out, catcher Cameron Rupp to first baseman Jim Murphy.

Scott Krieger singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Tripp.

Shea Vucinich walks. Scott Krieger to 2nd.

With Franklin Romero Jr. batting, Scott Krieger steals (2) 3rd base. Shea Vucinich steals (2) 2nd base.

Franklin Romero Jr. strikes out swinging.

Reggie Keen walks.

T. J. Mittelstaedt singles on a ground ball to right fielder Anthony Hewitt. Scott Krieger scores. Shea Vucinich scores. Reggie Keen to 3rd. T. Mittelstaedt to 2nd on the throw.

Cody Hawn grounds out to first baseman Jim Murphy.

Sounds' Losing Skid Hits Seven With 2-1 Loss In Omaha

04/22/2012 5:46 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

PAPILLION, Neb. - Starting pitcher Nate Adcock tossed eight innings of one-run ball as the division-rival Omaha Storm Chasers handed the Nashville Sounds a 2-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.

The loss was the Sounds' seventh in a row and the club's longest since dropping nine straight contests from May 2-10 last season. The Sounds' 4-14 start is the 2nd-worst in club history through 18 games of action.

Fourteen of the Sounds' 18 games have been decided by one or two runs (3-11 in those contests).

Nashville's lone run came in the opening frame as designated hitter Brooks Conrad (Audio) hit a deep homer to right field, his second of the season. The home run was Nashville's second long ball hit in the opening frame in consecutive days.

The Storm Chasers quickly knotted the game in the home half of the first as leadoff hitter Jarrod Dyson began the game with a stand-up triple. He scored two pitches later on a Johnny Giavotella sacrifice fly.

Nashville starter Seth McClung kept the Omaha offense in check until the bottom of the seventh inning when Terry Evans and Ryan Eigsti had consecutive base hits to remove him from the contest.

On the next play after reliever Victor Garate entered the game, Omaha executed a safety squeeze as Dyson laid down a perfectly placed bunt single that allowed Evans to score the go-ahead run.

McClung (0-2) pitched well but took the hard-luck loss while tossing Nashville's sixth quality start of the season. The veteran right-hander surrendered two runs on six hits while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.

Garate finished the game with 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts while allowing one of two inherited runners to score.

Brandon Sisk fanned one in a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.

The Sounds and Storm Chasers will play the third game of a four-game set at 6:35 pm CT at Werner Park on Monday evening. Sounds right-hander Mark Rogers (0-1, 6.00) will toe the rubber for the second time this season to face Omaha southpaw Ryan Verdugo (1-0, 5.11).

Box Score

Well, the Sounds were shut down by Nathan Adock. The only blemish for Adock was a Brooks Conrad solo shot. Logan Schafer and Sean Halton had hits. Edwin Maysonet had a hit and a walk.

Seth McClung started and was pretty good: 6 1/3 IP 6 H 2 R 2 ER 1 BB 5 K. Former Sound Wily Peralta's departure sure has weakened this Nashville staff. Luckily for Sounds fans, it is looking likely that he returns once Loe is back. He was pumping mid-90's today in the 9th. He absolutely handcuffed Tulowitzki to get out of a jam.

Game Log

After this, it seemed like the Sounds O took a Jon Jones kick to the face.

Nashville Top of the 1st

Logan Schafer grounds out, shortstop Tony Abreu to first baseman Clint Robinson.

Brooks Conrad homers (2) on a fly ball to right field.

Caleb Gindl called out on strikes.

Sean Halton grounds out, third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff to first baseman Clint Robinson.

Yeah, he was definitely noticeably improved at Helena last season. I still have high hopes for him.

Final: South Bend (D-Backs) 2, Wisconsin 1 (10 Innings)

South Bend comes back to snap Rattlers win streak

Silver Hawks get one in ninth and one in tenth for 2-1 decision

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN - Drew Gagnon worked six scoreless innings and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got to within two outs of making a 1-0 lead hold up for a sixth straight victory. But, the South Bend Silver Hawks had other ideas on Sunday at Coveleski Stadium. South Bend tied the game in the ninth and won in the tenth on an Ender Inciarte RBI single. South Bend's 2-1 ten inning win ended Wisconsin's winning streak at five games.

Carlos George put Wisconsin (10-7) up 1-0 with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. Greg Hopkins singled with one out and took second on a wild pitch. George shot a single back through the middle to send Hopkins home with the run.

Gagnon made that one run stand through six innings. He allowed three hits and a walk and struck out two.

South Bend's main threats against Gagnon came in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, the first two batters reached on singles and a sacrifice bunt moved the tying and go ahead runs in scoring position. Gagnon got the final two outs on a shallow fly ball to right and a strikeout.

Inciarte started the South Bend sixth with a walk. He stole second and took third on a wild pitch with two outs. But, Gagnon preserved the lead by getting the final out on a lazy fly ball to center.

Wisconsin reliever Stephen Peterson entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and kept the game 1-0 through the eighth.

Peterson got the first out of the ninth inning, but Marc Bourgeois beat him to the first base bag on a grounder to first for an infield single. Bobby Stone was next and his tailor-made double play ball to third went through the legs of Brandon Macias to put runners on first and second with one out instead of ending the game. Peterson hit the next batter to load the bases.

South Bend (9-8) tied the game as Niko Gallego sent a slow grounder past the mound. Wisconsin got the force at second, but Gallego beat the throw to first to let Bourgeois score the tying run. Stone kept running on the play and thundered around third to try end the game there. Greg Hopkins alertly threw the ball home and catcher Rafael Neda held on after a big collision at the plate to prevent the winning run from scoring in the ninth.

Wisconsin's hitters went down quickly in the top of the tenth and South Bend's hitters ended the game quickly in the bottom of the tenth. Chris Ellison singled and stole second base with one out against Seth Lintz. Inciarte singled to left-center, Ellison beat the throw home, and the Silver Hawks celebrated the victory.

Game two of the series is Monday night at 6:05pm CDT. Mark Williams (0-1, 2.77) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. South Bend counters with John Pedrotty (0-0, 4.44). Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm.

WP: DJ Johnson (1-1)

LP: Seth Lintz (0-1)

TIME: 2:31

ATTN: 1,054

Wisconsin Box Score

Gah! Losing that way just stinks. Drew Gagnon had his lowest strike out total of the year but it's difficult to nitpick when he only gave up 4 total baserunners through his 6IP (errors aside). He still has one of the most impressive stat lines through out the entire organization. Seth Lintz... It's way too early in the season to give up on him but he needs to do something positive as he's not striking out anyone and he's been scored upon in 3 of his 5 appearances this year.

Wisconsin only had 5 hits as a team so Max Walla and Carlos George were the only Rattlers to put up multiple hit games, each going 2-4. There were no XBHs, George stole his 7th base of the season and Walla was caught stealing. The T-Rats didn't play good defense at all, George committed his 4th error (fielding), Gagnon his 1st (throw), and Brandon Macias his 3rd (fielding). Rafael Neda did gun 1 of the 3 runners who tried to steal a base in the game.

Wisconsin Play By Play

Not much happened here besides what Chris already discussed above, Gagnon's error came on a PO attempt.

South Bend Bottom of the 2nd

  • Matt Helm flies out to left fielder Ben McMahan.
Marc Bourgeois reaches on fielding error by second baseman Carlos George.
With Bobby Stone batting, Marc Bourgeois advances to 2nd on caught stealing error by Drew Gagnon.
Bobby Stone flies out to left fielder Ben McMahan.
Roidany Aguila grounds out, first baseman Gregory Hopkins to pitcher Drew Gagnon.

Dang, Huntsville nicked up Taijun Walker a little bit. Hunter Morris even went yard! Every 2-3 years I hear about a Dwight Gooden clone. Walker is the latest in a long line of "Docs". That isnt a shot at Walker by any means. He was a Suppy pick in 2010. We chose Dylan Covey about 20 spots before Walker went.

Final: Huntsville 3, Jackson (Mariners) 2

Stars "Scoot" Past Generals

Ninth-inning homerun gives Huntsville their second walkoff in three games.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- In walk-off fashion for the second time in three nights, the Huntsville Stars came away with a 3-2 victory against the Jackson Generals on Sunday afternoon.

Following a game Saturday night that featured 19 combined runs and 28 combined hits, the teams were only able to combine for five runs on 19 hits on Sunday.

Huntsville got the scoring started in the second inning as a solo homerun by first basemen Hunter Morris gave the Stars a 1-0 advantage. For the Huntsville-area native, it was his first homerun of the 2012 season.

After Jackson tacked on a run in both the top of fourth and fifth inning on RBI singles by second basemen Eric Campbell and first basemen Rich Poythress to make the score 2-1, the Stars tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single of their own from center fielder Josh Prince.

The score would remain that way until the bottom of ninth inning, where second basemen Scooter Gennett provided the drama. With one out, the 21-year-old launched a solo homerun off of Generals RHP Stephen Hensley to win the game for Huntsville. It was the Stars third walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth inning so far this season.

In terms of pitching, RHP Robert Wooten improved to 2-0 on the season with a scoreless ninth inning and RHP Jesus Sanchez silenced the Generals in his 2.0 innings of work.

On offense, left fielder Lee Haydel and shortstop Domnit Bolivar had two hits apiece for the Stars.

Game four of a five game series will take place on Monday as the Stars will send RHP Kyle Heckathorn (1-0, 3.57 ERA) to face off against RHP Brandon Maurer (0-0, 3.60 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Huntsville Box Score

Evan Anundsen started and went 4IP allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, 2 hit batters, and 1 walk against 3 strike outs. He wasn't terribly efficient throwing 85 pitches but only 49 for strikes and he was followed by R.J. Seidel who went 2IP allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run against 1 strike out. Jesus Sanchez allowed 1 walk in his 2 innings and Robert Wooten had a hit and strike out in his.

While the story of the night is certainly Scooter Gennett's walk off bomb, Lee Haydel is quietly having a good season when he gets opportunities. He hasn't excelled in a PH role, though he's come up with some key hits, but he's been very productive when he gets a chance to play in the field. In other happenings Khris Davis went 1 for 4 in his return. Haydel, Josh Prince, and Domnit Bolivar each recorded a stolen base, Bolivar committed his 3rd error of the season, and Anderson De La Rosa gunned the only General's runner who tried to steal a base. De La Rosa has also been productive in limited opportunities putting up a .385/.429/.813 line in his 13 ABs.

Huntsville Play By Play

Anundsen and the Stars limited the damage in the 4th, bases were loaded with 2 outs.

Jackson Top of the 4th

Denny Almonte walks. Eric Campbell to 2nd.

With Francisco Martinez batting, Chris Pettit caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Anderson De La Rosa to second baseman Scooter Gennett.

Huntsville wasted an opportunity to score more runs in the 5th.

Huntsville Bottom of the 5th

‘Tees drop fourth straight

Brevard loses series opener to Clearwater

By Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

The Brevard County Manatees dropped their fourth consecutive game as they fell in the series opener to the Clearwater Threshers 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field.

A quality start by Jimmy Nelson was not enough for the ‘Tees as they struck out 14 times against Threshers’ pitching, including 10 times against Austin Wright. Nelson allowed three earned runs in six innings of work and gave up six hits, while striking out four.

Down 1-0 after four innings, the Manatees took the lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a two-out two-run single by T.J. Mittelstaedt that drove home both Scott Krieger and Shea Vucinich. Mittelstaedt went 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

Clearwater scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back. One of the runs came on a bases-loaded walk to Albert Cartwright and then a Brandon Tripp sacrifice fly to center gave the Threshers a 4-2 lead.

The Threshers would score another run in the eighth on a Jim Murphy RBI single off of Thomas Keeling.

Offensively, the Manatees went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

Brevard County will look to snap their four-game skid on Monday night against the Threshers. Jed Bradley (2-1, 0.00) will take the hill for the Manatees as the lefty looks to hold on to his perfect earned run average. Clearwater will counter with righty Perci Garner (0-1, 2.70), who was a second round pick of the Phillies in 2010.

I really have to stretch sometimes for the BC offense.

The Manatees are hitting .224 as a team after 16 games, by far last in the 12-team Florida State League. Their collective .295 OBP is also last, .333 SLG 10th, .629 OPS last.

The only statistical standout among individual leaders is T.J. Mittelstaedt, the 24-year-old Long Beach St. product with a .947 OPS, good for 5th in the league.

The 10-8 Stars are part of a very-balanced ten-team Southern League, at least via the standings thus far.

Huntsville leads the league in AVG, OBP, and SLG -- not a bad trifecta.

Khris Davis, Scooter Gennett, and Hunter Morris are "only" 11th, 13th, and 14th in league OPS rankings, respectively, so the rest of the Stars' lineup has contributed as well to the overall team ranking.

Word of note, and we all love Scooter -- only two walks in 78 AB's thus far. He was under the 5% walk threshold in 2011 at Brevard. If he could even approach 10%...

Going to nitpick on the awesome Chris for one moment here --

Sunday was game #17 of the season. It was the fourth blown save of the year.

Got to rally behind my Maassachusetts native and undrafted free agent Stephen Peterson here. It was unfortunate that Brandon Macias' error prevented the game from wrapping up (particularly when he was the featured Post-Crescent Rattler of the day -- see our Rattlers thread).

So yes, technically, it was a blown save, and Chris certainly didn't mention Peterson specifically, it's just hard to lump in a "blown save" on an individual pitcher or even cumulatively the staff when the run is unearned.

That being said, I think Chris' point was despite being tied for first place in the division, four of the losses have been of the "very tough" variety.

That's all. Pin it on the offense Sunday ;).

Dyson again deals Omaha game-winner

By Rob White, Omaha.com

A familiar formula resulted in another Omaha Storm Chasers victory.

Jarrod Dyson’s squeeze-bunt single scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Nate Adcock turned in his fourth straight strong start Sunday as Omaha defeated Nashville 2-1 for its eighth straight home win before 4,535 at Werner Park.

Dyson has supplied a late game-winning RBI in three of Omaha’s last five home wins and started a winning ninth-inning rally in another game in that stretch.

But while his previous game-winning hits had come on a 16th-inning triple and Saturday’s single through a five-infielder defense, Sunday’s came on a bunt single — and on a play that wasn’t even called.

In a pitcher’s duel between Adcock and Nashville veteran Seth McClung, Omaha’s Terry Evans started the go-ahead rally with a single, then went to third on a single by Ryan Eigsti. Victor Garate relieved McClung, and then Evans scored with relative ease on Dyson’s bunt, sliding in safely ahead of the throw by first baseman Sean Halton.

“I told Terry to be ready because there was a chance Dice would bunt,” Omaha manager Mike Jirschele said. “He read it well, got a great jump and took off.”

Omaha entered the day leading the Pacific Coast League with 15 sacrifice bunts — no other team had more than nine — and Eigsti got one down Sunday. With a number of speedy players, the Chasers are a threat to bunt for hits as well.

“I get some grief about it, but bunting is a skill these guys are going to be asked to do when they get to the majors,” Jirschele said.

Omaha won its second straight game to start the homestand, improving to 9-1 at home for the season and 13-5 overall.

Adcock (3-1), who entered the day fifth in the PCL with a 1.47 ERA and fourth with an opponents’ batting average of .169, managed to improve his ERA to 1.37 while holding the Sounds to one run on five hits. He walked one, struck out four and pitched an Omaha season-high eight innings.

Nashville’s only run came on a homer by Brooks Conrad, the second batter of the game.

Adcock, who retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced, has held foes to a .174 average in 26 1⁄3 innings.

“He threw the ball well again today,” Jirschele said. “Stayed ahead of hitters, mixed his pitches and kept the ball down — after the second hitter of the game.”

Brandon Sisk pitched the ninth and picked up his first save.

Nashville, a PCL-worst 4-14, lost its seventh game in a row and dropped to 3-11 in games decided by two runs or less.

Evans, 30, coming off a down season in 2011, is hitting .440 (11 for 25) in eight games for Omaha since being promoted from Class AA Northwest Arkansas.

The left fielder had two hits Sunday and also made a diving catch on Caleb Gindl’s line drive to lead off the ninth inning, keeping the Sounds from getting a rally started.

“He’s come up here and really contributed,” Jirschele said. “He’s had some big hits for us, showed power and played a solid outfield. It’s nice to get a guy who’s had experience at this level, too. Those guys are a little more relaxed and know what to expect.”
