Once again this season, Brevard does not have its own audio coverage. It appears two teams in the Manatees North Division (within which the majority of games are played) have audio, and all six teams in the South Division have audio (at least for their home games), so there will be opportunities to listen to approx. 70% or Brevard's games this season, just all from the opponent's perspective. There are no Florida State League games on MiLB.TV this year.

Wisconsin: RHP David Goforth at West Michigan (Tigers), 5:15 PM pre-game, 5:35 gametime

Chris Mehring is back to do his customary fantastic work as the Voice of the Rattlers. Follow him on Twitter @CMehring; we'll link to Chris' infamous blog often -- Rattler Radio.

MiLB.TV -- for subscribers; Wisconsin is one of only two (Great Lakes) Midwest League clubs that have all their home games available via MiLB.TV; Chris' call provides the audio. So for the $39.95 season-long package, fans in Brewer Nation can watch all Sounds games, all Timber Rattlers home games, and 24 Stars' road games (one Helena series this summer, too).

Surely the minor league announcers realize this, but their chances for listenership grow exponentially when the big league Brewers aren't playing opposite their calls. That's what allowed many of us to take in all of Tyler Thornburg's quest for perfection Monday night. I imagine that the starting pitchers, since they are such an integral part of half a game's play calls, also drive traffic.

Anyway, have at it this evening and enjoy -- here's hoping for great calls for Jeff, Alex, and Chris (and random Dunedin broadcaster :)).

Briggs -- for long-timers like you and I (RIP Andy Replogle)

I'm saddened by the passing of Andy Replogle, a member of my favorite all time Brewer team, the team that became known as Bambi's Bombers. He passed away way too soon.

Replogle was basically a career minor league type that manned the 5th starter position for most of that season as the result of an injury to Moose Haas and the offseason trade that sent Jim Slaton to the Tigers for Ben Oglivie. When he pitched you just hoped the offense did it's thing. Still despite allowing 177 hits in 149 innings, and striking out only 41 hitters, he not only managed a winning record (9-5), but an ERA under 4 and he threw 2 complete game shutouts.

Considering that success with very limited stuff, one wonders what the Crew might have done that year with a healthy Haas.

Sounds Lose To RedHawks In Twinbill Opener, 4-3

04/19/2012 7:18 PM ET

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds suffered their third consecutive loss on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, falling to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 4-3, in game one of a doubleheader.

The Sounds (4-10) trailed the entire way for the second straight game against the 'Hawks, falling to 1-5 against them this season.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead against Sounds starter Josh Butler in the top of the first inning. Brian Bixler (3-for-4) led off the contest with a line-drive double into the left field corner and later scored on Scott Moore's two-out single to center.

The RedHawks added to their advantage in the third. After Oklahoma City loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks sandwiched around a Bixler single, Moore drew a walk from Butler to force home pitcher Jordan Lyles and Justin Ruggiano lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it a 3-0 contest.

The Sounds got onto the board in the home half of the third, pulling within a run at 3-2 against Lyles. With one out, Edwin Maysonet singled and moved to third on a Brooks Conrad double. Taylor Green followed with an RBI groundout to plate Maysonet with the first Nashville run before Sean Halton ripped a run-scoring single to right to draw the Sounds within one.

Nashville right fielder Corey Patterson kept it a one-run deficit in the top of the fifth when he robbed a two-run homer from Ruggiano with a leaping catch at the right field wall.

Butler (0-3) took a loss in his third straight start to open the year. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in his five innings of work, walking four batters and striking out three.

The RedHawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth against left-hander Daniel Meadows when Brad Snyder blooped a one-out double down the right field line and scored when Landon Powell followed with a single.

The Sounds pulled back within a run at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Eric Farris doubled and scored on pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte's two-out RBI single to right, which chased Lyles from the contest.

Lyles (3-0) notched his third consecutive winning start for the RedHawks, holding the Sounds to three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames.

Xavier Cedeno worked around a pair of ninth-inning baserunners to nail down his first save of the year, striking out pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado looking to end the contest.

Farris went 2-for-3 for the Sounds to extend his hitting streak to six games, matching the longest effort by a Sounds player this season.

Box Score

Logan Schafer (2-4 2 K), Brooks Conrad (2-3 2B BB), Sean Halton (1-2 BB HBP) and Eric Farris (2-3 2B) all had solid games. Most of the damage came off of Astros top prospect Jordan Lyles. Not much else here beside the nugget about Erick Almonte above.

Josh Butler started but was not effective. Same for next man up Dan Meadows. Amaury Rivas entered and pitched another scoreless inning in relief. That is 4 straight scoreless appearances and 6 for 7 overall for Amaury. He could likely be effective in a Marco Estrada kind of way, no?

Game Log

They had a chance at the end.

Nashville Bottom of the 7th

Edwin Maysonet flies out to center fielder Justin Ruggiano.

Brooks Conrad singles on a ground ball to center fielder Justin Ruggiano.

Taylor Green pops out to third baseman Scott Moore in foul territory.

Sean Halton walks. Brooks Conrad to 2nd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Martin Maldonado replaces Corey Patterson.

Martin Maldonado called out on strikes.

Dunedin (Jays) 5 Brevard County 4

Box Score

Fresh off a tremendous outing against Dunedin in his last start, Hiram Burgos was good again tonight. 5 2/3 IP 3 H 2 R 2 ER 1 BB 7 K 1 HBP 7:3 GO:FO. Wild Thomas Keeling was next. He walked his first man of the year and put up a crooked number (2 ER) in the runs column in just 2/3 of an inning. Greg Holle (1 2/3 IP 2 K 3:0 GO:FO) came in and bailed out Keeling from further damage in the 7th by stranding two of his runners.

Nine hitter Frankin Romero Jr. was the 9th inning hero with a 2-run 3B to tie it. Unfortunately, Dunedin walked off in the bottom half nicking up Casey Medlen in the process.

It was a group effort for the Manatee hitters. Daily mentions Nick Shaw (2-4 BB) and T.J. Mittelstaedt (1-2 3 BB) were very productive. Slumpers Cody Hawn (2-5 2B) and Michael Walker (1-3 BB) made some noise. Miguel Velazquez hit a 2B. And super slumper Scott Kreiger went off (2-3 2B BB).

Two Manatee runners were cut down at the plate not including Romero in the 9th and another clean sheet for the D.

Game Log

To get an idea of how favorable the FSL is to pitchers, check out this page.

Brevard has a middling OPS (.639) but is last in OBP (.295). Dunedin is the clear offensive force in the league. We will play them the next two nights and recently completed a 3 game series with them. I would guess our pitchers have fared the best so far seeing as how I cannot remember a bad start from an A+ pitcher.

Wisconsin holds on for third straight win

Macias drives in four to pace Rattlers bats

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored eight runs in the first two innings at West Michigan on Thursday night against the Whitecaps. Then, the Rattlers had to hang on for an 8-4 win at Fifth Third Ballpark. Brandon Macias drove in four runs to lead the early attack for Wisconsin.

The Timber Rattlers (8-6) picked up on Thursday night where they left off on Wednesday and scored five times in the first inning. The first five Wisconsin batters in the first inning reached base and all five would score.

Yadiel Rivera started the game with a double and Max Walla drew a walk. Chadwin Stang singled to knock in Rivera for a 1-0 lead. Then, Jason Rogers drew a walk to load the bases.

Macias sent a chopper down the third base line and got a fortunate carom off the bag for a two-run double and a 3-0 lead.

Greg Hopkins tacked on a run with an RBI grounder. Carlos George ended the first inning barrage with an RBI single.

The Rattlers got going again in the top of the second. Tyler Roberts singled and Walla walked to knock starting pitcher Tim Kelley out of the game. Reliever Warwick Saupold was welcomed to the game with an RBI single by Stang. Saupold walked Jason Rogers to load the bases again for Macias.

The Rattlers third baseman drove in two more runs with a single for an 8-0 advantage.

West Michigan (7-7) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning on a home run by Curt Casali. They added two runs in the fifth with a two-out, two-run double to cut Wisconsin's lead to 8-3.

David Goforth went five innings as the Wisconsin starting pitcher and allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Chad Pierce worked a scoreless sixth, but allowed a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Eugenio Suarez. The inning could have been a little more frightening for Pierce and the Rattlers. There was a runner at third with two outs and Aaron Westlake sent a sinking line drive to left field. John Dishon charged, dove, and made a terrific catch to end the inning and save a run.

There was more drama in the bottom of the eighth inning for Pierce. A two out walk with a runner at third base put Whitecaps on the corners. In a steadily increasing rain shower, Pierce fell behind the next batter with three straight balls. At this point the grounds crew came out to spread drying compound on the mound. After the brief delay for mound repair, Pierce came back to strike out the batter looking, end the inning, and keep the tying run from coming to the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth, Seth Harvey allowed the first two batters of the inning to reach on a walk and a single. But, Harvey got the first out of the ninth on a strikeout. Then, Westlake lined a pitch to Hopkins, the Rattlers first baseman. Hopkins raced to first to double up the runner at first to end the game with an unassisted double play.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night with a first pitch set for 5:35pm CDT. Wisconsin has Andy Moye (0-0, 0.00) as the scheduled starting pitcher. West Michigan slates Wilsen Palacios (0-0, 3.38) to start the game. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:15pm.

HOME RUN:

WMI:

Curt Casali (2nd, 0 on in 3rd inning off David Goforth, 0 out)

WP: David Goforth (2-0)

LP: Tim Kelley (0-2)

TIME: 3:02

ATTN: 2,216

Wisconsin Box Score

Max Walla still doesn't have a hit in just his 3rd game, but he has a 5:2 BB:K ratio, last year in Helena he had 30BBs against 76Ks, I'd say that's a pretty encouraging early return. I hope his confidence remains high as the hits will start falling. Chadwin Stang recorded 3 hits on the evening while Brandon Macias and Carlos George each contributed 2. John Dishon hasn't hit much to start the season but he's played some pretty solid defense and managed to steal both 2nd and 3rd after his walk tonight. George made an out on the bases getting picked off in the 8th and the Rattlers played errorless baseball.

Wisconsin Play By Play

These long streaks in games of nothingness from the Rattler hitters concern me. After the 2nd inning the closest the T-Rats came to scoring a run was in the 6th when Dishon provided all the offense.

Wisconsin Top of the 6th

  • John Dishon walks.
Tyler Roberts called out on strikes. John Dishon steals (3) 2nd base.
With Yadiel Rivera batting, John Dishon steals (4) 3rd base.
    Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging.
Max Walla grounds out, shortstop Eugenio Suarez to first baseman Aaron Westlake.

Sounds Swept By RedHawks In Doubleheader On Thursday

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped both games of a doubleheader to the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. The Sounds dropped a 4-3 opener and lost, 4-2, in the nightcap.

The last time Nashville was swept in a doubleheader was July 7 at Oklahoma City. The four-game skid by the Sounds dropped the club to a 4-11 record, which is the worst start by the club during the PCL era. Eleven of Nashville's 15 games this season have been decided by one or two runs (3-8).

In the nightcap, Nashville took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Oklahoma City pitcher Sergio Perez, who allowed base hits and a walk to load the bases. Centerfielder Logan Schafer then looped a base hit to left field to score Corey Patterson.

Nashville starting pitcher Brian Baker struck out five of the first six batters he faced to open the game, but ran into trouble in the beginning of the third. On the second pitch of the frame from Baker, Oklahoma City second baseman Jimmy Paredes (2-for-3) belted his first homer of the season to right field to tie the game.

On the next pitch, former Sound Carlos Corporan followed with a double off the left field wall and later gave the RedHawks the 2-1 lead after scoring on a one-out single from outfielder J.B. Shuck.

Patterson knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with his first homer of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall onto Chestnut Street.

Perez left the contest after five pitches in the bottom of the third due to injury. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits in two innings of work. Fernando Abad (1-0) got the win with two scoreless frames to end the game.

Oklahoma City took the lead for good at 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Scott Moore tripled to right field and was followed by a one-out walk from Brad Snyder. With runners on second and third, Paredes hammered a hard grounder over the head of the Sounds' drawn-in infield to plate both runners.

Schafer accounted for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded on second base as Edwin Maysonet struck out to end the game.

Baker pitched well to throw his first quality start of the season, but took a no-decision. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings of work. His five strikeouts all came in the first and second innings.

Sounds reliever Victor Garate (0-2) gave up two runs on two hits and three walks in one inning for the loss.

Schafer singled twice and added a double with an RBI. Eric Farris went 0-for-1 with two walks to snap his six-game hitting streak.

The Sounds and RedHawks will play the finale of a four-game set at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night at Greer Stadium. Brewers #1 prospect and Sounds right-hander Wily Peralta (0-1, 2.12) takes the mound against Oklahoma City righty Henry Sosa (0-0, 3.00).

‘Tees fall in the ninth at Dunedin

Brevard rallies but falls short in series opener

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

The Brevard County Manatees opened a six-game road trip with a 5-4 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Thursday night. The ‘Tees tied the game in top of the ninth but the Blue Jays won it with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

Hiram Burgos gave Brevard County (8-5) a strong start as he allowed two earned runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked just one. The two runs that Burgos gave up were in the second on a two-out double by Kevin Ahrens.

The Manatees’ offense was stifled for just two hits in the first five innings by Dunedin (11-2) starter Asher Wojciechowski. Brevard County was able to get to Wojciechowski in the sixth as Nick Shaw led the inning off with a single and two batters later T.J. Mittelstaedt reached with a single of his own.

Cody Hawn would then drive in Shaw with an RBI single. The ‘Tees only put the one run on the board as the inning ended with Miguel Velazquez grounding into a double play.

With two outs in the seventh against Scott Gracey, Scott Krieger doubled to right and then Franklin Romero Jr. reached on a fielding error by Gracey which allowed Krieger to tie the game at 2-2. Romero Jr. would then steal second and would attempt to score on a single by Shaw, but he was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Dunedin took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh as they scored two runs off of Thomas Keeling on three singles and a walk. Greg Holle replaced Keeling and was able to get the last two outs of the inning, leaving two Blue Jays stranded.

Brevard County’s last chance came in the ninth as Mike Walker led the inning off with a walk. After a Shawn Zarraga fly out, Krieger walked to put two on with one out. Romero Jr. would then tie the game with a bases-clearing triple to center.

Shaw would follow Romero Jr. with a walk, but then Reggie Keen’s hard hit ball right to the third baseman Ahrens caught Romero Jr. in a rundown and he was retired. Mittelstaedt would then draw Brevard County’s sixth walk of the night but with the bases loaded Hawn flied out to short as the ‘Tees left the bases loaded in a 4-4 game.

Brevard County closer Casey Medlen relieved Holle and struck out the first two batters of the inning, but he would then give up a two-out walk to Ryan Schimpf. Ivan Contreras would pinch run for Schimpf and steal second. Then Jake Marisnick won the game for the Blue Jays as his single to center scored Contreras.

Shaw, Hawn and Krieger each had two hits, while Romero Jr. had two RBI.

Brevard County and Dunedin will face-off again on Friday night as the ‘Tees will send Austin Ross (0-0, 0.90) to hill. The Blue Jays will counter with Sam Dyson (1-0, 2.45).

No mention in the box score but from the Dunedin site:

Brevard County tied it at 2-2 in the seventh, but would see their rally end - along with their Manager's (Joe Ayrault) night - when Miguel Velazquez was thrown out at home plate by Michael Crouse on a very close play.

Stars Handle Smokies in Series Finale

HUNTSVILLE, Ala - On Thursday, the Huntsville Stars closed out their five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies with a 9-7 victory at Joe Davis Stadium.

The Stars got the scoring starting early off of Smokies starting pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee in the first inning. A Brock Kjeldgaard RBI groundout and an RBI single by Hunter Morris gave Huntsville a 2-0 lead.

Then in the second, the Stars tacked on three more runs on an RBI groundout by Josh Prince , an RBI single by Jeff Bianchi and a sacrifice fly by Scooter Gennett, making the score 5-0.

However, the Smokies would not go down without a fight. Tennessee’s third baseman Nate Sampson hit a solo shot to put the Smokies on the board. They would go on to score four more unanswered runs over the next four innings off of Stars starting pitcher R.J Seidel and reliever RHP Josh Stinson to tie the game up after six innings.

Luckily for the Stars, that tie would not last for long. Third baseman Andy Gonzalez came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning that gave the Stars the a 7-5 lead.

After the Smokies cut their deficit to one, it was Gennett who struck yet again, delivering a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Stars the lead for good.

On the pitching side, reliever Bradley Blanks was able to shut the door for the Stars in the ninth inning, earning his first save of the season. Stinson was also credited with the win, as he pitched 4.0 innings while in relief, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Offensively, Gennett led the way with his third 3-for-4 night at the plate in four games, knocking in three runs and scoring two in the process. He also swiped a base. The 21-year-old second basemen also increased his hitting streak to 11 games. Khris Davis, 0-for-2 on the night, ended his 12-game hitting streak.

For Huntsville, their victory on Thursday gave them their fourth win in five games to start off their 10-game homestand. The Stars will welcome the Jackson Generals to town starting Friday, as Huntsville RHP Brandon Williamson (0-0, 4.50 ERA) to the mound to square off against RHP Andrew Carraway (2-0, 2.00 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 p.m.
