Interesting to hear from Bud that Steinbrenner tried to hire Uke away at one point. I'm sure there is many stories like that which we will never hear about.

It's up to 90 minutes now. It also includes the Doc Severinsen preliminaries that weren't televised. I didn't look for the highlights that were interrupted by commercials, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were also included.

Sort of tangential to the whole thing, and I know that in the context of Bob Uecker it's all part of the schtick, but I always sort of shake my head about anybody being made fun of, regardless of degree, on the basis of their performance in a multi-year MLB career. IT'S AN MLB CAREER!. And Ueck made it at a time when baseball was still king.

 

I think this phenomenon will only get worse as the gulf between people who have actually played a lot of baseball and those who simply watch baseball (or play on XBox/fantasy/etc) grows. That holds not only for baseball but for most sports. The fact of the matter is that the best young baseball player most people know, who might actually be a really good Legion player or even a local kid who gets to play a pretty good level of baseball at a WIAC school, has very slim odds of even denting a Class A roster. And that's true even if you live in a place like California, Florida or Texas.

 

Anyhow, some good laughs from the Ueck event. Glad he got his statue. The highlights of some of the older calls brought back some great memories. I remember exactly where I was when I listened to the end of the Detroit win that sent them on to the first quasi-playoff. Even though TV has become the dominant medium for following the team, it's those memories he created from the days where you simply COULDN'T watch the game anywhere but the ballpark that are the reason Ueck so fully deserves all the honors he's getting.
